Opening · Chapter 1
After I was released from prison, Julian Vance used every toxic method in the book to force me to remarry him.
He threatened me, begged me, locked me up, and even dragged his favored stepsister, Chloe Miller, to kneel before me. "Elena, Leo is already dead.
Are you going to hate Chloe and me for the rest of your life over a dead child?" "We are doing everything we can to make it up to you!" I couldn't stand his disgusting words for another second.
I slapped Julian hard across the face. "Make it up to me? How dare you even say those words!
If you hadn't stolen Leo's lifesaving experimental medicine for Lily, he would still be alive!" "And is your idea of 'making it up to me' perjuring yourself to throw me into prison for three consecutive years?" Julian looked away guiltily, but he still tried to defend himself. "But I did it because I love you." "You were too hysterical back then.
I was terrified you would hurt Chloe and Lily in a fit of rage." I suddenly burst out laughing. Love?
So his version of love was murdering my son, framing me for prison, and then forcing me to remarry him. Since you, Julian Vance, can commit such atrocities in the name of love.
Then so can I. "Fine. I agree to remarry you." "No way!" The moment the words left my mouth, Chloe, who had been kneeling on the floor, snapped her head up and shrieked in protest.
But when she noticed Julian’s sharp gaze landing on her, Chloe quickly softened her tone, trying to cover her tracks. "I...
I'm just worried Lily won't be able to handle this sudden change." "Julian, if you remarry Elena, doesn't that make Lily look like an illegitimate child? She is still so young.
I don't care about a title for myself, but my heart breaks for Lily..." As Chloe spoke, tears streamed down her face in perfect, pathetic synchronization.
As expected, Julian’s heart instantly melted with pity.
Just as he was about to waver, I spoke up, cutting off his thoughts. "That's an easy fix." "From now on, Lily can call me Mom." "That way, Julian and I will have a child together again, won't we?" Julian froze, completely caught off guard by my suggestion.
But as the words sank in, his eyes lit up with sudden hope. "Yes! That’s brilliant!" "Elena, we lost Leo, but we still have Lily.
And after all, you are technically her aunt!" Chloe was utterly dumbfounded. She had assumed that with my stubborn, unyielding pride, I would never agree to remarry Julian.
That was the only reason she had fakeknelt with him in the first place—to show off her submissiveness. She never expected I would accept Lily so easily.
Her tears flowed even faster now, panic bleeding into her voice. "No! Absolutely not!" "Julian, Lily is my baby.
How can I let my daughter call another woman her mother?" I smiled gently.
I stepped forward, reached out, and wiped the tears from Chloe's cheeks. "Because, Chloe, your actions killed my child," I whispered softly. "As compensation, having your daughter call me Mom seems incredibly fair, don't you think?" Turning my head, I offered my hand to Julian, who was still kneeling. "Julian, do you agree?" "If you do, we’ll sign the marriage papers today.
I will forgive you, and I will forgive Chloe. We can be a happy family again." Julian’s eyes flooded with pure, ecstatic joy. He grabbed my hand and scrambled to his feet. "Yes!
Of course I agree!" "Let's go. We're going to the courthouse right now!" He spoke incredibly fast, terrified I would change my mind.
He practically dragged me into his car and sped off toward the city hall. Through the rearview mirror, I quietly glanced at Chloe sitting in the backseat.
Her face was twisted with silent, murderous rage. Of course she was furious. Three years ago, she had successfully used Leo's death to force Julian to divorce me.
She never dreamed I would walk back into his life this easily.
With venom dripping from her eyes, Chloe pulled out her phone, tapped out two quick messages, and then suddenly screamed from the back seat. "Julian!
Oh my god, this is bad!" "The doctor just texted! Lily's condition has taken a turn for the worse. We need to get to the private hospital immediately!"
Opening · Chapter 2
"What?!" Julian slammed on the brakes. Without asking for my opinion, he spun the steering wheel and sped toward the hospital.
Our private family doctor was already waiting anxiously at the entrance. Seeing our car pull up, he jogged over to meet us. "Mr.
Vance, Lily's vitals are dropping rapidly." "Our local experts have very little research on this specific rare disease, and we don't have a... Wait, Dr.
Vance?" The doctor looked at me, pretending to be utterly shocked and thrilled. He gasped and rushed closer. "Yes! I remember now! Dr.
Elena Vance, you were the leading researcher on this exact pathology!" He immediately turned to Julian, his voice filled with urgency. "Mr. Vance, now that Dr.
Vance is out of prison, she is the most qualified person to take over Lily’s treatment!" "Since young master Leo passed away from the exact same illness, Dr.
Vance must have perfected the cure by now." I sneered inwardly. Same old, cheap trick. Chloe was trying to use a sick child to trap me again.
She wanted to play the victim, paint me as the villain, and dump all the blame on me if things went south.
While I was analyzing the situation, Chloe threw herself onto the floor before me once again. She sobbed hysterically, grabbing at my coat. "Elena, I beg you. Please." "Save Lily.
I know I made mistakes in the past. I’ll be your slave, I'll do whatever you want to make it up to you! You can torture me, you can ruin me, I don't care! But the child is innocent!
Even if you hate me, please, think of Julian." "Lily is his blood, too. I beg you!" Chloe's performance was toptier.
Predictably, Julian chimed in. "Elena, even the doctor says so." "Let the past be the past.
From now on, you will be in charge of Lily's treatment..." "SLAP!" A resounding slap echoed through the hallway, stunning everyone into absolute silence.
But that slap didn't land on Chloe's face. Nor did it land on Julian's. It landed squarely on the smug doctor's face.
I screamed at him, my voice trembling with manic fury. "Who gave you permission to speak Leo's name?!" "You useless, incompetent hack!
You couldn't save Leo back then, and you still can't save Lily now?!" With a backhand, I slapped him again. The force of the blow knocked the doctor flat onto the floor.
He was completely dazed. His eyes darted instinctively toward Chloe. This was completely offscript.
The plan Chloe had texted him was simple: shift the medical responsibility to Elena, trigger Julian's guilt, and force Elena to comply. Why was this woman physically assaulting him?
But I didn't stop. Slaps, punches, and finally, I threw myself on top of him, wrapping my fingers tightly around his neck. "You worthless fraud!
You're all in this together!" "You killed my Leo, and now you want to destroy me too!" The doctor’s eyes rolled back as I choked the air out of him.
Terrified of dying, he squealed like a pig. "Mrs. Vance! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" "It was Chloe! Chloe made me do it!
She told me to lie about Lily's condition worsening so we could force you to be the primary doctor!
I'm just a doctor, I had to do what she said!" "I have the text messages on my phone to prove it! Please, let me go!" I slowly released my grip.
I fished the phone out of his pocket, grabbed him by the hair, and forced his face against the screen to unlock it.
Sure enough, the text message was right there. [Tell Julian that Lily is dying. Force him to make that bitch the primary doctor.
We'll handle the rest later.] I thrust the glowing screen right in front of Julian’s face. Chloe’s face turned paperwhite in an instant.
She wrapped her arms around Julian's legs, weeping hysterically. "Julian, no! That's not what it looks like! Let me explain!" "I was just so desperate for Lily.
Think about it, Elena was able to develop the targeted trial drug for Leo years ago. If she treats Lily, the chances of survival are so much higher.
You have to believe me, I only did this for our daughter!" Julian’s expression became incredibly complex, but his eyes locked onto the word "bitch" on the screen.
He remained silent for a long time. Just as he sighed, preparing to pull Chloe up from the floor, Another pair of hands beat him to it. It was me.
I bent down and gently pulled Chloe to her feet. My eyes curved into a sweet, beautiful smile. "Of course I believe you, Chloe." "After all, you trust me so much.
You convinced Julian to steal my son's lifesaving medicine for your daughter, essentially murdering my boy.
And yet, you are still willing to hand your daughter over to me—a mother who has every reason to want blood." "Are you truly not afraid that I will take this chance to torture her, mutilate her, or... kill her?"
Opening · Chapter 3
Chloe froze completely, her breath hitching in her throat. She stopped crying, staring at me with wide, terrified eyes as if she were looking at a literal demon.
I reached out and gently stroked her hair, my touch soft and warm.
Then, I whispered with a twisted grin, "Just kidding." "With me around, Lily won't die that easily." I turned back to Julian, offering him a radiant smile. "Julian, I'll be Lily's primary doctor." "Don't worry.
I will do absolutely everything in my power to keep her alive." Seeing that I was not only willing to forgive him but also save Chloe's child, Julian was ecstatic.
He agreed instantly without a second thought. In contrast, Chloe, who had been playing the submissive victim, started screaming in sheer terror.
She grabbed my clothes, shaking me violently. "No! Keep away from Lily!" "You're insane! You're going to murder her!
You want revenge!" I stumbled backward under her aggressive shoving. Thankfully, Julian caught me.
He shoved Chloe away, barking at her in fury. "What is wrong with you?!" "I haven't even settled the score with you about those text messages!
Now that Elena has graciously agreed to save Lily, why are you throwing a tantrum?!" Chloe pointed a trembling finger at me, her eyes filled with dread.
But all Julian saw was me, leaning weakly against his chest, tears pooling in my eyes. I looked so fragile, so broken.
It was the exact same helpless, innocent act Chloe had used against me for years. Chloe was on the verge of a complete mental breakdown.
She clenched her fists so hard her nails drew blood, forcing herself to calm down. She looked at me and forced out an apology. "I'm sorry, Elena. I was just... too emotional.
I didn't mean what I said." "Please don't take it to heart." My smile remained bright, but my eyes were dead and freezing cold. "It's fine, Chloe.
I just got out of prison, so it's completely normal for you to be this excited to see me." "I'm incredibly excited too.
We have plenty of time ahead of us." With that, I gently detangled myself from Julian’s embrace. I pushed open the door to the VIP ward to check on Lily.
The little girl looked just as terrified of me as her mother was.
But with Julian standing right there, she could only lie still and let me perform a series of physical examinations.
I flipped through her latest lab reports and spoke in a calm, professional tone. "Lily's condition is indeed severe. She needs immediate surgery.
Any further delay will be fatal." "Let's schedule it for the day after tomorrow. I will perform the operation myself.
Once it's done, she will be fully cured." Hearing this, Julian pulled me into a joyful embrace, pressing his lips against my cheek. "Elena, thank you! Thank you so much!
I knew you wouldn't let Lily die!" Only Chloe glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred from the corner of the room.
But because Julian was watching, she had to force a fake, painful smile. In that exact moment, a realization washed over me. Ah. Being the bad guy... Actually felt incredibly good.
Later that evening, after I finished showering in Julian’s luxury mansion, Chloe blocked my path at the top of the stairs.
She grabbed my wrist with a iron grip, her voice a venomous hiss. "Tell me the truth. You're going to kill Lily on that operating table, aren't you?" "You pathetic loser.
Did the prison guards I paid not teach you how to behave over the last three years? The moment you get out, you immediately try to seduce Julian again.
Go tell him the surgery is canceled, or else... I will make your life a living hell!" I looked down at my wrist, watching a red bruise slowly form under her grip.
I let out a low, dark laugh. "What are you so terrified of, Chloe?" "Every surgery carries a risk of mortality.
If Lily dies on the table, it's just her bad luck for having a mother like you." "Besides, Julian is waiting for me in the master bedroom right now.
Don't worry, he won't grieve for Lily for too long. We will have another baby very soon." My blatant provocation pushed Chloe over the edge.
She bared her teeth, her voice shaking with rage. "You will regret this!" "I am throwing you out of this house tonight!" With a sudden burst of strength, Chloe dragged me toward the edge of the staircase.
She released her grip and threw her own body backward, screaming at the top of her lungs. "Ah—!"
Opening · Chapter 4
But her scream cut off after only two seconds. Because I had reacted instantly, grabbing her wrist with a ironclad grip, keeping her suspended. "You idiot.
You used this exact same trick five years ago." "Did you honestly think I wouldn't be prepared?" Five years ago, she had intentionally slipped on the garden steps and claimed I pushed her.
Julian had defended her blindly, launching into a massive fight with me. We almost didn't make it to our first wedding. Chloe froze. I tilted my head, flashing her a wicked smile.
Then, I raised my free hand and slapped her across the face with everything I had, sending her sprawling onto the floor.
She stared up at me in utter disbelief. "You..." Right at that moment, Julian’s hurried footsteps echoed from the upper hallway.
Chloe scrambled up, clutching her red, swollen cheek. Tears flooded her eyes as she ran toward him.
She threw herself into Julian's arms, weeping pitifully. "Julian, I was just asking her about Lily's condition because I was so worried. But she slapped me without saying a word!
She still hates me and Lily!" "You can't let her do the surgery! She is going to kill our daughter on purpose!" Julian looked at Chloe's swollen face, his eyebrows furrowing deeply.
He mumbled a few comforting words, kept his arm around Chloe, and walked toward me with a furious expression.
But the moment they stepped around the corner and saw me, Both of them froze in absolute shock. I was collapsed on the floor, looking completely manic.
I was violently slapping my own face, over and over, hard enough that blood was trickling from the corner of my mouth. But I didn't stop.
The moment I saw them approach, I scrambled backward on my hands and knees. I bowed my head repeatedly, hitting my forehead against the floor, screaming in terror. "I'm sorry!
I'm sorry, Chloe!" "I didn't mean to! I was just so scared!" "If I don't hurt you, they will hurt me! I'm sorry, Chloe! Please forgive me!
Please!" As I screamed, I raised my hand and whipped myself across the face again. Julian was horrified by my selfharming behavior.
He immediately realized something was deeply wrong with my mental state. He rushed forward, grabbing my wrists to stop me. "Elena!
What are you talking about?!" "No one is going to hurt you! What is wrong?!" I thrashed violently in his grip, my eyes wide with sheer panic. "Don't beat me!
I'll be good!" "I'll go back to my cell! Just please, don't use the tasers on me!
Please!" In my frantic struggle, my silk robe slipped off my shoulders, exposing a large area of my back. Covering my skin were thick, jagged, horrific scars.
Julian sucked in a sharp breath.
A terrifying realization dawned on him. "Elena... did they... did they abuse you in prison?" Hearing the word "prison," I shrieked and covered my ears, violently denying it. "No!
No! Don't say it out loud!" "I'm fine! I didn't get beaten! If I talk, they'll lock me in the dark room again! Shh!
Don't say anything!" Then, as if remembering something, I crawled back toward Chloe, grabbing the hem of her pants, begging through my tears. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to slap you!
You can slap me back! Please, just slap me back!" Chloe staggered under my frantic pulling. She had absolutely no idea what kind of game I was playing.
She turned to Julian, her voice desperate. "Julian, she was perfectly fine a second ago!" "Don't let her fool you! She's acting!
She's doing this on purpose to—" "Enough!" Julian roared, his face dark with rage. "Can't you see how terrified she is?!
Look at the scars on her body!" "I will investigate every single thing that happened to her in that prison.
Right now, I am taking Elena to see a psychiatrist." Without another word, Julian scooped me up in his arms and rushed out of the mansion.
Resting my head against his shoulder, I looked over his back and flashed Chloe a triumphant, mocking smirk.
An hour later, the psychiatrist diagnosed me with severe PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) triggered by severe prison abuse. It was a temporary psychotic break.
He prescribed some sedatives and advised that I needed rest and a sense of absolute security. Julian’s heart was bleeding with guilt.
He held me close, whispering endless promises, swearing he would take me to the courthouse to remarry the moment I felt better. He promised no one would ever hurt me again.
Outside the consultation room, Julian was screaming at his assistants over the phone, demanding a full investigation into my prison records. Inside the room, only Dr.
Adrian Carter and I remained. My eyes were completely clear and calm.
I held out my hand. "Do you have it?" Adrian handed me a small medicine bottle, his expression filled with worry. "Elena, if you want revenge, I can think of a thousand safer ways to help you.
You don't need to put yourself through this torture of remarrying him." I gripped the bottle tightly, my voice strained with unspeakable pain. "No.
If I use anyone else's hands, I won't be able to look Leo in the eye when I die.
I have to do this myself." "In this state, a spouse is the primary legal guardian." "Once this drug takes effect and Julian’s brain turns to mush, I will have legal control over everything he owns.
I will feed him a taste of his own medicine." Adrian didn't push further. He simply handed me another document from his desk. "Everything is set.
I made sure Chloe 'accidentally' discovered this file." "What is your plan?" I smiled, visualizing the beautiful chaos to come. "Chloe is convinced I am going to murder Lily during the surgery.
She will try everything to stop it.
Since she can't stop the surgery itself, she will do exactly what this leaked file suggests—she will convince Julian to secretly swap my 10% concentration drug for the 5% one." "But what if... the 5% concentration is actually the one that causes fatal complications?" I paused, my smile widening into something dark and hollow. "That means... the two of them will physically murder their own daughter with their own hands." "I can't wait to see their faces."
