Opening · Chapter 1
I froze, and I finally understood what was going on. Megan was the head of the household.
Without her help, how could that father and daughter have been added to our family registry?
I pointed at the last two pages of the registry and demanded, “Megan, what is this?” “Why are Derek Blake and Lily Blake on our family registry?” Megan looked completely blank.
She took the registry from my hand with a show of surprise and said, “Ththis registry has other people on it?
I had no idea!” “Why did you suddenly pull the registry out for no reason?” As soon as I heard that, my anger flared even more. “Megan, stop pretending!” “You’re the head of the household.
If you didn’t agree, how could these two have been added to our registry?” Seeing that she couldn’t bluff her way through it, guilt flashed across Megan’s face.
Then she pretended to remember something and smiled at me awkwardly. “Oh, now that you mention it, I remember.” “Not long ago, my coworker Derek was getting divorced from his wife, and even his child’s registration had to be moved out.
So I thought I’d let them temporarily use our family registry. We were always going to move them out later.” “Don’t be mad. It’s really nothing.” Looking at Megan’s grin.
I was so angry my fists clenched until they turned white. “Nothing?” “Today I went to enroll Noah. The staff said the enrollment slot had already been used.
Was it taken by this girl, Lily? We spent eight million on this house just for the school district.” “Now all that money is wasted, and Noah still has no school.
You call that nothing?” When Megan saw how terrible my expression was, she stopped smiling too. She pulled out a few brochures from somewhere and shoved them into my hands.
Trying to calm me down, she said, “Honey, don’t be angry yet. Anger is bad for your health.” “How could I not care about Noah’s school?
Look, I’ve already arranged everything.” As she spoke, Megan pointed at the brochures. “See, we don’t have to go to Westbridge Elementary.
I think this private elementary school is pretty good too.
The teachers, the environment, and the college placement rate are all great.” “Since the spot was already used by Lily, let’s just forget it. It’s only elementary school.
There’s no need to...” Before Megan even finished, I knew exactly what she was thinking.
I was so angry I grabbed the brochures and slapped them right in Megan’s face. “Forget it my ass.” “Westbridge Elementary is one of the top three elementary schools in the city.
So many parents fight tooth and nail just to get in. A school that good, and you want to hand it over to your coworker’s daughter instead of our son.
Does that sound reasonable to you?” After saying so much, I didn’t even want to keep arguing with Megan.
I simply laid down the final ultimatum: “Listen, Megan, I don’t care what your relationship with Derek is, whether you’re just coworkers or if there’s something shady going on.
That school spot belongs to my son, Noah!” “No matter what, you have to get that spot back for me.” I took a deep breath and didn’t leave her any room to save face: “If you can’t get it back, then we’re getting a divorce!”
Opening · Chapter 2
When I mentioned divorce, Megan finally realized how serious this was and answered halfheartedly, “Fine, fine! I’ll go find Derek right now.
Happy now?” “It’s just one elementary school spot.
Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it...” After saying that, Megan still left in a huff, clearly unwilling to back down.
Her impatient attitude made me want to grab her and keep arguing. But I forced myself to swallow it. Forget it. Right now, the most urgent thing wasn’t to get angry.
My son Noah still didn’t have a school. I couldn’t count on Megan completely with the way she was acting. If the spot really couldn’t be taken back, I needed a backup plan.
But after thinking it over, I realized this wasn’t something I could solve alone. I could only sigh helplessly and call my parents. “Hello, Dad, Mom.
I need to tell you something...” For three straight days, there was no movement at all on the school spot.
Every time I asked, Megan just brushed me off over the phone. “I’m working on it, I’m working on it.” “How easy do you think this is?
You think you can just move someone out and cancel it? Their child’s schooling is a big deal too. They need time to arrange a transfer, don’t they?
Why are you rushing?” Then, after only a couple more sentences, she was eager to hang up. “Forget it, I’m busy right now.
I’m working overtime tonight, so don’t wait for me for dinner.” She said she was working overtime, and she came home later and later each day. The first night it was eleven.
The second night it was close to midnight. By the third day, I was leaning on the sofa waiting until midnight, and all I got was a text: 【Project is behind schedule.
Sleeping at the office.】 I wasn’t stupid. I could tell Megan was just avoiding this.
Finally, on Friday night, I waited in the living room for Megan to come home late. “You’re back?” As she changed her shoes, Megan glanced at me and answered, “Yeah, I’m back.” “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to shower and sleep.
Overtime is killing me.” I stood up and blocked her path. “What about the schooldistrict spot?” “It’s been a week. Why is there still no progress?
A lot of public elementary schools stop accepting students next month.” Megan helplessly curled her lips and walked around me, continuing inside. “You’re bringing this up again.
Can you let me breathe for a second? I’m working overtime every day for this family, aren’t I?” “You ask me two or three times a day.
Aren’t you tired?” “Derek also needs to find a school for his daughter. That takes time to contact people, pull strings, and handle the paperwork. Can’t you wait a little longer?
Can’t you show some understanding for other people’s difficulties?” I let out a cold laugh. I had already expected Megan to react like this.
Crossing my arms, I said slowly, “Of course I understand.” “I also know you’re coworkers, so it would be hard for you to bring it up.” When Megan heard that, she stopped walking.
She turned around in surprise and looked at me. “Honey, I knew you weren’t unreasonable!” “Ah, honestly, Noah going to private school is just as good...” But before Megan could finish, I cut her off.
I kept going, “So I found a school for his daughter.” “You can’t bring yourself to ask, so I’ll go to your company on Monday and tell him myself.
If he doesn’t agree, I’ll also mention it to your group’s leadership.
I’ll ask whether ruining someone else’s family counts as moral corruption.” “Didn’t you say your company is laying people off right now?” The smile on Megan’s face vanished instantly.
She glared at me viciously and shouted, “Evan Carter, what do you mean by that?” “You’re threatening me!” Then, as if remembering something, she lowered her voice and warned me, “Noah is home right now.
I don’t want to fight with you.” “I said I’d handle this, and I will handle it. Don’t go to my company on Monday, do you hear me?
Don’t push this into a point where it can’t be fixed!” I shook my head in amusement. I knew exactly what Megan was thinking.
She just wanted to drag this out until public elementary schools stopped accepting students, so the spot couldn’t be taken back anymore.
Then I’d have no choice but to drop the issue and let Noah go to private school. I lifted my hand and pointed toward Noah’s room, signaling to her. “Don’t worry.
I sent Noah to my mom’s place.” “He won’t be coming back to stay here for now.” “My son matters more to me than he does to you.” As I spoke, I handed her the documents on the coffee table. “Also, I’m moving back in here for the time being.
This is the divorce agreement. I’ve already signed it.” “I already gave you a week. Since you can’t get the spot back, forget it. I don’t feel like arguing with you anymore.
We’ll just see each other in court.” “I’ve formally sued you and Derek.”
Opening · Chapter 3
Megan looked stunned. When she saw the divorce agreement in my hand, she didn’t even dare take it. I didn’t care.
I shoved it into her hand and dragged the suitcase in the corner with me as I left.
The next morning, the court summons was delivered to Megan and Derek. 【Regarding the defendants’ fraudulent household registration transfer, malicious seizure of enrollment eligibility, and the plaintiff’s major property loss and infringement of the child’s right to education caused thereby.】 I also informed Megan’s parents about it.
I’m not some lump of dough that Megan can knead however she wants. Megan dared to take Noah’s school spot today. Tomorrow, who knew what worse thing she’d do?
If it really came to divorce, that kind of woman would be a relief to be rid of. But I never expected that once I hardened my attitude, they would soften instead.
That afternoon, Megan contacted me and said she had invited Derek out. The two of them had already figured out how to handle this.
That afternoon, as soon as I sat down, Derek hurried over warmly. “Evan, you’re here.” “I already ordered your coffee. Sit down. I’m really sorry about all this.
We caused such a huge mess for your family. I really do feel awful about it.” I had met Derek twice before and had no impression of him. This time, I took a good look at him.
Slickedback hair, powdered face, the kind of guy who clearly tried hard to appeal to women. I raised a hand to cut off his small talk and went straight to the point. “Mr.
Blake, since you know you caused trouble, tell me your solution.” “I don’t have time to waste with you.” Derek saw how cold I was and could only let out two awkward laughs before explaining. “Evan, the schoolspot thing was all my fault.” “At the time, I was only thinking about getting away from my cheating wife, so I begged Megan to let me register under your family’s registry.
Then, with Lily starting elementary school, I rushed to enroll her.” “I didn’t know it would take Noah’s spot.
I’m really sorry about that.” I listened and immediately shot back, “Wow, you were really in a hurry.” “There are so many elementary schools in the city, but you just had to grab Westbridge Elementary’s spot.
Was that house in that school district yours? Then you just take it?” “Cut the crap.
Fix this fast.” Derek’s face turned red and white from my words, and he was so embarrassed he could barely keep smiling. Megan, standing nearby, seemed ready to jump in for him.
But Derek stopped her with a look. Then he took a bank card from his bag and handed it to me, forcing out a pleading smile. “Yes, yes, Evan.
This definitely needs to be fixed.” “But I also looked into the public elementary schools still accepting students right now. Either they’re too far away or they’re too bad.
You know I’m a single dad. I really don’t have much money, and it wasn’t easy for me to raise Lily.” “I’ll pay thirty thousand dollars to buy the spot.
Just... just take pity on me...” As he spoke, Derek lowered his head and his eyes turned red.
When Megan saw how pitiful Derek looked, she finally couldn’t hold back and tried to persuade me. “Evan, Derek really is in a tough spot.
Thirty thousand may not be much, but it’s his sincerity. The spot was already used by Lily anyway.
How about just letting it go?” “I’ll pay for Noah to go to the best private school, okay?” To be honest, if I didn’t care about my image, I really wanted to throw the coffee in my hand right into the faces of these two bastards.
Thirty thousand? I suddenly laughed out loud.
I reached out, took the bank card, and tossed it straight into the trash beside the booth. “Thirty thousand dollars to buy a spot at Westbridge Elementary.
Derek, do you take me for an idiot?” “I already had my lawyer get a professional valuation from a broker.
Since the spot was used, the market value of that house drops by ten percent, and that doesn’t even include the extra tuition and fees Noah would have to pay for private school.” “Derek, even a million wouldn’t cover it.
You might as well keep that thirty thousand for a lawyer.” When Derek heard how serious I was making it sound, he pretended to start crying. Megan also panicked.
She slammed the table and shouted at me, “Evan, what the hell do you mean by this?” “Let me tell you, this house isn’t yours alone!
I helped with the down payment and paid the monthly mortgage too. If I want to give the spot to Derek, I can.
There’s no room for discussion!” “If you want the thirty thousand, take it. If not, you get nothing!” After saying that, Megan dragged the crying Derek out with her.
As she left, she didn’t forget to throw one last line at me: “Either way, that spot isn’t coming back.” “Whether you sue or divorce me, I don’t care. Do whatever you want.
Let’s see what kind of stunt you can pull!”
Opening · Chapter 4
I shook my head, only finding Megan’s words ridiculous. Stunt? I could pull off plenty of stunts. I went straight to a law firm.
Just after I finished discussing things with the lawyer, a call came in from Megan’s parents. “Evan, we’ve figured everything out.” “This was indeed Megan’s fault.
She felt sorry for that father and daughter and wanted to help. She never expected that man would directly take Noah’s school spot. We’ve already lectured her about it.
Megan told us you still want to go to court, and even get a divorce.” “Evan, for Noah’s sake, you can’t get divorced!” I raised an eyebrow.
I had guessed that Megan couldn’t handle this on her own and also couldn’t swallow her pride.
So she could only pull Megan’s parents in to smooth things over. “I’m getting divorced for Noah.” “As his mother, she can even give away his school spot.
Does she deserve to be called his mother? She can hand the spot to someone else today, and who knows what she’ll do tomorrow. I gave her a chance.
It was her own choice not to ask Derek to give the spot back.” “Today she even brought Derek along and talked about buying the spot for thirty thousand dollars.
That house cost eight million in the first place, and our two families each paid half.
What the hell is thirty thousand supposed to be?” I heard the sharp intake of breath on the other end. Looks like Megan hadn’t told them about this ridiculous mess.
I kept fanning the flames casually. “I asked the lawyer about it.
She’s the atfault party, so if we divorce, the child will definitely be with me.” “You don’t need to call anymore, and you don’t need to see Noah anymore either.” After saying that, I hung up directly.
As expected, half an hour later, Megan called me like a madwoman. I didn’t pick up once. Megan still wouldn’t give up, so she started sending me texts like crazy: 【Are you sick?
Why are you telling my parents this?】 【Why won’t you let them see Noah? Do you have to make this such a mess?】 【Answer the phone, Evan. I’m begging you.
Let’s talk this out properly. Do it for Noah.】 …… I didn’t reply to a single one. What was she doing all that time? I gave her a full week.
She brushed me off every day then, and now she knows how to panic? Megan even went to my parents’ house.
Luckily, I had already guessed she might do that, so I had my parents take Noah back to our hometown for a while in advance. Megan couldn’t find anyone.
She could only keep harassing me, throwing out threats one minute and softening her tone the next. But she never mentioned compensation. It was the same old trick.
She was thinking that once elementary school admissions closed, she could come back and sweettalk me.
By then, she wouldn’t have to pay a thing, and she’d be the one getting the good deal. And because of Noah, I probably wouldn’t really divorce her anyway.
There was no way I was letting that happen.
The day after the lawyer told me the documents were ready, a fiftypluspage report was sent straight to the party discipline and inspection email at their company.
I also made a trip to the household registration office. I reported Derek’s father and daughter for illegally registering their residence.
I could tolerate anything, but I absolutely could not tolerate anyone messing with my son!
On the other side, during the lunch break, Megan and Derek saw that no one was in the break room, so they started whispering. “Megan, looking at how hard Evan is pushing back, this won’t go wrong, right?” Megan squeezed his hand and soothed him. “Don’t worry.
Westbridge Elementary stops accepting students today. Once the system shuts down at five, Lily’s enrollment will be a done deal.
What could possibly go wrong?” “Since I said I had a way back then, how could I fail to handle something this small?” “As for the one at home... once everything settles, whether he accepts it or not, he’ll have to accept it.
Worst case, I’ll spend a little more, send Noah to private school, and buy him a new computer to make it up to him.
Then it’ll all blow over.” Hearing that, Derek smiled with a flattering, admiring look. That greatly satisfied Megan’s vanity.
As the two of them kept talking, their faces moved closer and closer together. Just then, a coworker I didn’t know walked in. Knock, knock, knock.
As if to remind them, he knocked twice on the open door of the break room.
The two of them immediately sprang apart, creating distance between themselves, and started fiddling with the cups in their hands to cover it up, pretending they weren’t familiar with each other.
The coworker rolled his eyes in disgust. Then he looked at Megan and said, “You’re Megan from IT, right?” “Come with me to the twelfth floor.
Party discipline and inspection wants to see you.” Megan froze for a second, then followed him upstairs, completely confused. “Huh?
Oh, okay...” Derek, who was left behind, was also a little puzzled. Just as he was about to head back to his desk, his phone rang. “Hello, am I speaking to Mr.
Blake, father of student Lily Blake?” Derek’s heart tightened. “Yes.
Who is this?” The voice on the other end said seriously: “I’m the admissions director at Westbridge Elementary.” “After verification, there is a major question mark over your daughter’s enrollment eligibility.
Her household registration documents are suspected to be false.
So after discussion by the school administration at Westbridge Elementary.” “Lily Blake’s newstudent enrollment eligibility at our school is hereby temporarily denied!”

Why it stands out
Megan handed over the eight-million-dollar school district spot to her coworker’s daughter, Lily, and shrugged it off like it was nothing. I slapped the brochures in her face. That’s when I found Derek and Lily already on our family registry. She claimed it was temporary, and i didn’t buy it. Now she’s dodging my calls, sleeping at the office, and I’m stuck with a son who has no school. This isn’t about a spot anymore—it’s about trust. Or the lack of it.
