Opening · Chapter 1
I had been spoiled rotten since I was a child.
This time, because it was my traditional painting teacher’s birthday, I decided to go to the countryside to sketch from life.
But I never expected that one sketching trip would end up sending me away...
Lena had fair, delicate skin, and there were almost no visible pores on her face, giving her a gentle and virtuous air.
The first time I saw the place, I was pleasantly surprised by the scenery.
But I did not expect my foot to slip, and my whole body fell into a muddy ditch.
I thought Lena would at least pull me up, but instead, she turned and walked away.
“Hey, you could at least help me up!”
Lena lifted my suitcase with one hand and said steadily, “The ditch isn’t deep, so just stand up and step out.”
I could only struggle to get up by myself, and after I climbed onto the bank, all I could see was Lena’s back.
I stomped my foot in anger and followed her.
“You’ll be living with me for the next few days.”
“Who wants to live with you?”
I looked at Lena’s face and muttered under my breath.
Lena’s face had sharp, defined features, and she looked rather heroic.
She was half a head taller than most girls, nearly five foot eleven, with a wellproportioned figure.
She was fair and delicate, and she did not look like someone from a mountain village at all.
She looked at me and said coldly, “Since Mr. Miller entrusted you to me, I won’t leave you alone.”
“And you’d better behave.”
The Mr. Miller she mentioned was our family’s butler, and I had asked him to help contact someone for this sketching trip.
Mr. Miller had handled everything for me.
But I did not understand, because even if the scenery was beautiful for sketching, the people should at least be warm and easy to get along with!
Lena did not look like someone easy to mess with, and if I annoyed her one day, I would definitely be the one at a disadvantage with no familiar people around me.
I fumbled through my bag and took out my phone, wanting to call Mr. Miller and ask him to come pick me up.
The moment I took out my phone, it was snatched away.
I reached out my hand and said irritably, “Give it back. I’m not staying in this awful place. I want to go home.”
“Don’t even think about it. That’s impossible.”
“Since I took your money, helping you is what I should do.”
“You...”
“Then I don’t need you to refund the money. I just want to go home now.”
“No.”
“Why?” I asked in confusion.
“I’m a person who keeps my word. I usually do what I say, and I never go back on it.”
“Or is Miss Ivy scared and too afraid to stay with me?”
Lena smiled so gently and charmingly on the surface, but the words she said were truly sharptongued.
Her provocation worked very well, and by the time I came back to my senses, I was already walking after her.
I still kept talking nonstop on the road:
“Where are we going?”
She fell silent and stopped speaking, so I could only walk obediently behind her.
Opening · Chapter 2
My expression grew darker and darker as I looked at the small brick house in front of me.
I could tolerate everything before this, since I had come here to sketch, but when I saw this house, I really could not hold it in anymore.
I asked in a low voice, “What is this place?”
Lena glanced at me. “Can’t you tell?”
“I’m saying, Lena, are you out of your mind?”
“You’re not making me live here, are you?”
“This place is all dirt. How can anyone live here? Are you kidding me?”
I kept shouting.
Lena frowned slightly, ignored my yelling, and walked straight inside.
I stubbornly refused to go in and paced around at the doorway.
After pacing for a while, I grew angrier the more I thought about it, so I turned and left, but I had only just walked out the gate.
“The mountains are full of wolves, and they only come out at night.”
“And tenderskinned girls like you are exactly their type.”
“If you walk out on foot, you’ll run right into them.”
“And you’ll be their dinner.”
Lena’s faint voice drifted out from behind me.
My body froze.
I gritted my teeth, turned around, and went into the room.
This woman was not gentle at all!
The room that came into view was different from what I had imagined.
The room had been cleaned very thoroughly.
I thought dust would be flying everywhere inside, but I did not expect it to be exceptionally clean.
Bright sunlight shone through the glass and fell on Lena.
She suddenly did not seem so annoying.
“I cleaned it three times before you came, so there won’t be much dirt. You can stay here without worry.”
“Also, I’d like to explain something to you. This is a brick house too, not some mud house. Where would you even find mud houses nowadays?”
I curled my lips. Fine, I said it wrong, so I would correct it next time.
When she saw me standing there in a daze, she tilted her head slightly, sighed, and asked, “What do you want for lunch?”
I was just about to answer when she immediately continued, “Why am I even asking you? Whatever you want to eat, we don’t have it here.”
I rolled my eyes at her. What kind of person was she?
“Is fish okay?”
“Your family is this poor, and you still have fish?”
She glanced at me, curved her lips, and did not answer.
“Let’s go.”
“Where are we going now? You’re not going to sell me off, are you?”
“Mm, I’m going to sell you to one of the old bachelors here.”
“Huh?”
I opened my mouth in shock.
“Close your mouth. Relax, I won’t sell you. After all, I’ve already taken your money.”
“You’re drooling. Open your mouth less in the future.”
I quickly touched my mouth with my hand and realized she had tricked me.
“Is it fun to lie to me?”
She nodded.
I followed her slowly from behind and made gestures at her back.
She went to get a fish basket and walked ahead.
The air here was very good, and it smelled like a green meadow.
We walked all the way to the foot of the mountain, and a crystalclear river came into view.
I said in delight, “Why didn’t you tell me we were coming here earlier? I would have brought my easel.”
“It’s not like you won’t have another chance to come.”
I curled my lips at her and stopped talking.
“Wait on the bank.”
As she spoke, she began rolling up her pant legs, preparing to go into the water.
I was a little confused. “Why do I have to wait on the bank? I want to go in too.”
I also reached down and copied her by trying to roll up my pant legs, but unfortunately, it was my first time doing it, and no matter what, I could not roll them up properly.
Lena sighed, squatted down, and helped me roll up my pant legs.
Her hands brushed against my legs, and they were very soft.
A wave of heat rushed up to my cheeks.
After she finished rolling them up, she held my hand and took me into the water while saying, “The water here isn’t too deep, but you still need to be careful.”
“Just stay behind me.”
I nodded.
Soon, Lena caught one fish, and I said, “I’ll catch the next one.”
“Can you?”
She glanced at me and nodded.
“Come here.”
I quickly walked to her side, and her voice was a little hoarse, the unique kind of voice people had after being in the sun. “Slow down. Don’t fall.”
The moment she finished speaking, my foot slipped, and I fell straight into the river with a splash.
Lena reacted quickly and pulled me up, but I still inevitably choked on several mouthfuls of water.
I collapsed onto the bank and started coughing violently.
My heart was panicking, and my legs felt a little weak.
I heard a “tsk” by my ear.
Lena crouched down in front of me. “Get on.”
I froze for a moment. “You can’t carry me. I weigh over a hundred pounds, and you look even thinner than me...”
“Stop talking nonsense.”
I paused, then climbed onto her back.
Lena supported me with one hand and carried the fish basket with the other, yet she still walked very steadily.
Lena was silent the whole way, while I chattered nonstop the entire time.
When my questions annoyed her, Lena gave a perfunctory “Mm.”
We made it home safely, and Lena took out a blanket. “Wrap yourself up. I’ll boil water for you.”
“I can just use warm water...”
Before I could finish speaking, I sneezed.
Lena’s face darkened, and she turned, left the room, and went to the kitchen.
After a while, she carried a bucket of hot water to the bathroom and casually knocked on the glass.
The blanket was too warm, and I was still drowsy.
Lena lowered her voice. “Go take a bath.”
“A bath?” My heart skipped. “Together?”
“By yourself!!!”

Editor note
Why it stands out
Lena snatched my phone the second I pulled it out, then threatened me with wolves. “Tender-skinned girls like you are exactly their type.” She’s not gentle at all—just cold, sharp-tongued, and half a head taller than me. I came to sketch in the countryside, but now I’m trapped in a brick house with a woman who calls me spoiled and dares me to leave. Every time she smiles, I know she’s lying. And the worst part? I’m starting to like it.
