Opening · Chapter 1

At our wedding reception, we were playing a game of "Undercover".

In this round, the secret words were "The Bride" and "The Best Friend." When it was my husband Asher's turn to describe his word, he said: "We slept in the same bed last night." The crowd erupted in cheers.

I blushed and lowered my head, thinking he was showing off our love.

But when the cards were revealed at the end, his card actually read: "The Best Friend." Before I could process it, he smiled and looked at his female bestie, Chloe. "Why didn't you describe your card properly, Chloe?" "That hickey on your neck..." I stiffly raised the card in my hand. "Asher, my card is the one that says 'The Bride.'" Asher just shrugged carelessly. "Come on, it's just friends helping each other satisfy some physical needs.

It doesn't mean anything." Chloe leaned in close to my ear, a provocative smirk on her lips. "He told me I'm much better in bed than you are." The cheering in the room instantly died.

I suppressed my trembling voice. "Asher, say that again." Asher immediately shielded Chloe behind his back.

He frowned, looking at me with nothing but impatience. "We're all adults here.

It's just a game." "Elena, you're not seriously getting jealous over this, are you?" "Everyone is out here having a good time, and you just have to ruin the mood and throw a tantrum." He turned to the crowd and laughed it off. "I was just doing that for the drama, you guys get it, right?" I stared at his collar.

There was a blatant lipstick stain on it. The exact same shade of temptress red that Chloe was wearing.

I looked up, meeting Asher's eyes. "For the drama?" "What do you think our marriage is?" "What do you think the vows we just took in front of all these guests were?" Asher snorted. "Marriage is just a legal obligation." "Chloe and I share a soul connection.

How can you even compare the two?" I looked coldly at Chloe. "Chloe, let me remind you." "Asher is a married man." "Your lack of boundaries and this fake 'bestie' act is crossing the line.

You won't be able to handle the consequences." Hearing this, Chloe's eyes welled with tears. She took a halfstep back, tugging at Asher's shirt. "Asher, I'm sorry.

This is all my fault." "I made Elena mad. I should just leave." "Please don't fight because of me." She made a move to walk away. Asher grabbed her wrist tightly.

He turned around and shoved me back hard. "Elena, why are you so incredibly narrowminded?" "Chloe did your duty as a wife for you.

You can't even tolerate a man's basic physical needs, so what right do you have to call yourself Mrs.

Sterling?" "This dinner is over." With that, he took Chloe's hand and stormed out of the private dining room. The reception ended in a disaster.

The guests avoided my gaze, lowering their heads as they quickly rushed out. I stared in the direction they had vanished.

My palm was cut by a piece of broken glass, but I didn't even feel the pain. When I returned to our new house, I thought I had walked into the wrong place.

The throw pillows that used to be neatly arranged on the sofa were scattered all over the floor. A bright pink suitcase was parked right in the middle of the living room.

Asher had just walked out of the master bedroom wearing a bathrobe.

Seeing me walk in, he broke the news to me casually. "There's been a string of burglaries near Chloe's apartment lately." "She's too scared to stay in a hotel alone." "She'll be staying with us for a while." I pointed at the door. "This is my legal marital home." "Take your things, take your girl." "And get the hell out." Asher's face turned completely cold. "She's in trouble, and I'm just helping her out.

What's wrong with that?" "Do you have a single shred of compassion?" Just then, Chloe poked her head out of the bathroom, wearing nothing but a skimpy towel. "Asher, the water is a bit cold." Asher's expression softened instantly. "Don't catch a cold, babe.

Go back inside." He wrapped his arm around her waist and walked into the master bedroom. And slammed the door right in my face.

Opening · Chapter 2

Soon, Chloe's shameless laughter echoed from the master bedroom. Along with the squeaking of the bed. A sharp, throbbing pain shot through the back of my head.

This was a chronic symptom left behind by years of highintensity research work. A few years ago, there was an explosion at the military lab.

To protect the core research data, I was thrown by the blast wave. My brain suffered severe trauma.

Now, whenever my emotions fluctuated violently, the neurological pain would flare up. The pain was so intense it caused fullbody spasms, making it hard to even stand.

I forced myself to endure the agony and staggered toward the living room medicine cabinet. But when I opened my prescription bottle, it was completely empty.

Asher happened to open the bedroom door and walk out.

I pointed at the empty bottle and asked him. "Where is my medication?" Asher glanced at the bottle and sneered impatiently. "Chloe had terrible cramps earlier." "I saw your bottle said it was for pain relief, so I gave her the rest of the pills." That was a highly regulated, custommade military nerve blocker.

He actually gave my lifesaving medicine to Chloe just for her menstrual cramps.

My vision went black, and I had to grip the edge of the table to keep from collapsing. "Asher, that is my lifesaving medication." "Do you even know what the chemical compounds in that drug are?

How dare you just feed it to her!" Asher let out a cold laugh. "Elena, do you really think you're terminally ill?" "You look perfectly fine normally.

Stop acting." "You're just jealous that Chloe matters more to me, so you're throwing a tantrum and faking an illness." He grabbed a glass and brushed past me, heading straight for the water dispenser.

Chloe walked out of the bedroom, draped in Asher's jacket. She was twirling the empty medicine bottle in her hand.

She walked up to me and spoke in a mocking, sarcastic tone. "Your medicine works wonders." "My cramps are completely gone." As she spoke, she deliberately tossed the empty bottle into the trash can.

Asher walked back over with his water. "If the medicine is gone, just go buy more." "It's not a big deal.

Stop starting fights just to get attention." The pain hit me in waves, worse than before. My legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the floor. Asher held two glasses of water.

He looked down at me as I shivered on the floor.

He coldly stepped over my body. "Alright, Chloe says she's hungry." "We're going out for a latenight bite." "If you find the floor so comfortable, you can sleep there all night." He led Chloe out, slamming the front door behind them.

Their giggles faded down the hallway. I curled up on the cold floor. I bit the back of my hand hard to keep myself from screaming.

Memories of the past flooded my mind uncontrollably. Five years ago, I had a severe case of acute gastroenteritis. When Asher found out.

He drove through a raging blizzard for over ten hours to get to me. When his car broke down halfway, he ran over ten miles on foot.

When he finally burst through the door, he held me so tightly. "Elena, as long as I'm here, I will never let you suffer or feel pain again." Back then.

Even a slight frown from me would make him panic. It wasn't until dawn that I finally managed to drag myself up. Looking at my pale, ghostlike reflection in the mirror.

I knew it was time to wake up.

Opening · Chapter 3

The next afternoon. I put on a baseball cap and a face mask and went to Asher's company.

The startup capital for this company had been funded by my own national research prize money. Now, I was not only going to take my money back. I was going to sever all ties.

Just as I walked into the building's underground parking garage. An executive elevator door opened. I kept my head down, stepped inside, and stood in the far corner.

Chloe entered, clinging to Asher's arm. The two of them were laughing and flirting. They didn't even notice me in the corner, fully disguised.

Suddenly, the elevator shuddered violently. The overhead lights went out, and the elevator ground to a halt midway. In the pitchblack darkness, Asher didn't panic.

Chloe shrieked and threw herself into his arms. He pulled her tight, his voice low and husky. "Don't worry, baby.

I've got you." Chloe whimpered in a fake, delicate voice. "Asher, the elevator is broken. Are we going to die here?" Asher chuckled. "If we die, at least we die together.

It's romantic." "Plus, no one can disturb us here." Then came the rustle of clothes.

Asher's breathing grew heavy. "Chloe, do you know something?" "In all the time I've been with Elena, I've never used a condom." "Sex with her is so dry and boring." "But with you, I finally feel like a real man." "Now I have to go through two boxes a week." Standing in the corner, a cold shiver ran up my spine.

Chloe let out a soft moan, playing hard to get. "Oh, stop it... there's someone else here." Asher snorted disdainfully. "Who cares about some stranger?" "When you're with the one you love, you do what you want." "I can't wait another second." With that, the disgusting sound of wet kissing echoed in the darkness.

They were kissing passionately. I clutched the divorce papers in my bag. My stomach churned with intense nausea. After about five minutes, the elevator lights flickered back on.

The shouts of the maintenance crew came from above. The elevator doors were pried open with a crowbar. Asher and Chloe scrambled to adjust their messy clothes.

Asher turned to look at the corner. And finally recognized that the fully disguised person was me. He froze for a second, then exploded in anger. "Elena!

Are you insane?" "You actually stalked me all the way to my office!" Chloe looked at me smugly. "Hiding under a mask... what are you, a peeping Tom?" "Oh, Asher, I'm so embarrassed." Asher stroked her face. "Let her watch.

Maybe she'll finally learn how to be a real woman." I stared coldly at his face and pulled the documents from my bag. "Asher, since you two love cheap thrills so much." "I'll grant your wish." "Sign the papers." I turned my gaze to Chloe. "Chloe, this is my final warning to you." "Until he signs these papers, he is still married." "You are nothing but a cheap mistress hiding in the shadows." "Don't think the garbage you stole is a treasure.

Only rats feed in dumpsters." I pointed at Asher. "By five o'clock this afternoon." "Have all my personal belongings packed and sent to the security office." "If a single item is missing, you'll regret it." With that, I stepped right out of the elevator.

Leaving them standing there. Asher was stunned for a moment. "Elena, who do you think you are?" "A divorce? Fine! Let's do it!

I'm glad to get rid of you." "I've been sick of your boring ass for a long time anyway!"

Opening · Chapter 4

At 4:00 PM. I checked the time and opened the door to the house. I only wanted to retrieve the urn containing the ashes of my late father, a decorated war hero.

My father had made the ultimate sacrifice at the border years ago, and his body was never fully recovered.

His comrades could only gather the bloodstained soil and a few bone fragments from the blast site. That urn was my only connection to him in this world.

The moment I stepped inside, a pungent, foul animal odor hit my nose. Chloe had somehow brought a Ragdoll cat into the house. It was tearing across our leather sofa.

Asher's pleasing laughter echoed from the study. "Do you like it, Chloe? Is this okay?" My heart sank as I rushed into the study.

The urn with the military star emblem that used to sit on the altar was gone. On the floor sat a pink litter box.

The Ragdoll cat had just jumped inside, scratching the sand to relieve itself. The graywhite "sand" used to cover its waste was actually my father's ashes. Asher stood nearby.

He was holding the shattered base of the ceramic urn. My mind went completely blank, my vision blurring. "Asher... what did you do?" Asher turned and saw me.

Without a care, he kicked the broken base of the urn aside.

It hit the wall and shattered completely. "What are you screaming for?" "Chloe's cat had diarrhea, and we didn't have any litter." "I saw this old jar in the study filled with some gray dust.

I didn't know what kind of garbage it was." "So I used it to help out." Chloe walked in, pinching her nose. She was spraying perfume in the air.

She looked at the ashes on the floor with utter disgust. "Asher, why does this dust smell so musty and cheap?" "It stinks.

Even my cat barely wants to step in it." "Is this some kind of toxic waste?" Tears streamed down my face. I violently flipped the pink litter box over.

I fell to my knees, desperately gathering the ashes mixed with cat waste.

Asher walked over and grabbed me by the collar, hauling me up. "Are you losing your mind?" "It's just a pile of worthless dust, and you're making a mess of my house!" "Chloe's cat is terrified because of you.

Can you even afford to compensate her?" Chloe stepped directly onto the scattered ashes. Under her shoes, the ashes were ground into fine powder, sinking deep into the floorboards.

Seeing my father's heroic soul subjected to such unspeakable humiliation. Every ounce of my strength was drained. I wrenched myself free from Asher's grip.

I pulled a secure military communicator from my inner pocket. Asher didn't even see it clearly.

He just mocked me from the side. "What, are you going to throw that brick at me?" I ignored him.

I pressed a highlevel emergency code. "General, my medical leave is over." "Also, I am reporting an assault on a military family." "And the desecration of a fallen hero's remains."

Why it stands out

“We slept in the same bed last night.” That’s what Asher said at our wedding reception—but his card read “The Best Friend,” not “The Bride.” He gave my life-saving nerve blocker to his mistress for cramps. Then he moved her into our marital home. I sent him to a supermax.

Back at their new home, Elena finds Chloe's suitcase in the living room and Asher casually announces Chloe will stay with them due to burglaries near her apartment. Elena orders them out, but Asher slams the bedroom door in her face, and she hears Chloe's laughter and the bed squeaking.
