Opening · Chapter 1

I kept a low profile and never bragged about my wealth, so my college classmates all thought I was just an average girl from a normal family.

For three years, nobody knew that I was actually the only daughter of the city's most famous real estate tycoon.

My roommate had always boasted about being a rich, highsociety heiress.

But when she took us to her family's "luxury villa," I realized it was actually the estate my dad had casually gifted me for my eighteenth birthday. And the guy I liked?

To secure a good job after graduation, he rejected my confession and chose my fakeheiress roommate instead. Little did he know, the CEO of his dream company is my older brother.

Oh well. Since they brought this on themselves, I can’t wait to watch them beg for my mercy. There was only one month left of junior year.

Senior year would be all about offcampus internships, meaning we wouldn't be around campus much. So, I decided it was time to officially confess my feelings to Tyler.

I liked Tyler. It was an open secret among my friends and his. Of course, Tyler himself knew it too. Tyler was golden, handsome, and an absolute beast on the basketball court.

I had been captivated by him the moment I saw him playing, and I immediately started pursuing him. I chased him for a whole year.

During that year, we watched movies and grabbed dinner together all the time. Whenever I had free time, I’d go find him.

We acted almost like a real couple, minus the holding hands and hugging. But I actually enjoyed that sweet, ambiguous phase. We were basically one step away from making it official.

With senior year internships right around the corner, if I didn't lock things down now, who knew what might change? I bought him a gift he had wanted for ages but couldn’t afford.

Then, I invited my roommates and his friends to a VIP private lounge at the trendiest club downtown.

I booked the biggest lounge and ordered a massive spread of gourmet food and drinks. "Chloe, did you rob a bank?

This private lounge must have cost a fortune!" My roommate, Gaby, was stunned by my generosity.

When she saw the expensive wine on the table, she gave me a huge thumbsup. "I respect the hustle.

You really don’t hold back when it comes to the guy you want!" "Of course." Why would I be cheap when it came to the person I loved? Soon, everyone else arrived.

Once the group was complete, I told everyone to help themselves and have fun. After about an hour of partying, I decided it was time.

I picked up the microphone and cleared my throat to get everyone’s attention. "Thanks for coming tonight, guys.

I actually have something important to say." I turned, looking at Tyler with all the tenderness in my heart. "As of today, Tyler and I have known each other for exactly one year.

Tyler, I want to tell you that I love you. Will you be my boyfriend?" The moment the words left my mouth, the room erupted into cheers and catcalls. "Say yes!

Say yes!" "Make it official!" I stood there with a bright smile, waiting for Tyler’s answer. But Tyler didn’t speak right away.

I noticed his eyes darting hesitantly, his gaze shifting to someone behind me. Before I could figure out who he was looking at, his voice broke the silence: "I'm sorry, Chloe.

But we're just not compatible."

Opening · Chapter 2

The smile froze on my face. The cheering in the room died down instantly. My expression went cold. I took a few steps closer to him. "What did you say? Not compatible?

In what way?" Tyler avoided my eyes, stammering without giving a straight answer. "Chloe, why are you making a scene and putting him on the spot?" At that moment, my other roommate, Hailey, suddenly stepped up. "Tyler never said he liked you.

You’ve been the one throwing yourself at him this whole year. He said you're not compatible just to spare your feelings.

Did you really want him to humiliate you by saying he doesn't like you at all?" "Hailey, this is between Tyler and me.

Who gave you the right to speak?" My relationship with Hailey had always been rocky. Even though we shared an apartment, we barely spoke.

Hailey loved to brag about being a rich girl with a wealthy family. Everything she wore and used was highend luxury.

Others couldn't tell, but I knew her socalled designer bags and clothes were all highquality replicas from DHgate. None of them were real. "You—" Hailey’s face flushed with anger.

She wanted to snap back, but Gaby quickly pulled her away.

I let out a cold laugh and turned my attention back to Tyler. "Tyler, you owe me an explanation today." I wasn’t some pushover.

I wasn't going to let him reject me without a clear reason after a year of leading me on.

Seeing that I wouldn’t back down, Tyler finally grimaced and said, "Chloe, I never liked you. You were the one who kept clinging to me.

I thought about giving it a try, but I realized we come from different worlds. We really aren't compatible." "Different worlds?" I laughed out of pure anger. "You don't like me?

Tyler, I chased you for a year. Why didn't you say you didn't like me a year ago? Why didn't you say so when you accepted all my expensive gifts?

Why didn't you say we weren't compatible when I got you frontrow tickets to your favorite band? Or when I paid for your entire class to celebrate your birthday?

Saying we're 'not compatible' now is just pathetic." My chest heaved with rage. I felt completely played. Over the past year, he had accepted every single gift I gave him.

He spent my money without a single hint of guilt. I had naturally assumed we were practically together, just waiting for a formal title.

I never expected he was just leading me on and treating me like a fool.

Opening · Chapter 3

Tyler’s face turned from red to pale under my words.

Since both of our friend groups were watching, my bluntness clearly bruised his fragile ego. "Chloe, I never asked you to buy me gifts or spend money on me.

I even warned you before—if your family isn't doing well, stop trying to flex and live beyond your means just to look rich.

You just wouldn't listen," Tyler said, suddenly putting on a selfrighteous act, trying to lecture me. My family wasn't doing well? Ah, right.

Every time I bought him a gift or treated him to dinner, to make my feelings seem more sincere, I would tell him that I had saved up for a long time.

Sometimes I even lied and said I took a parttime job just to buy him things. And yet, none of that had touched him.

Instead, I ended up looking like a desperate fool. "Right, Tyler. You didn't ask.

I was just stupid!" I pulled a beautifully wrapped gift box from my purse and held it up. "You said you loved this watch, and I went through hell to get it for your birthday.

And this is how you treat me? Fine. I don’t need to waste it on you anyway." I looked around the room and spotted a guy sitting quietly in the corner.

I knew he was Tyler's roommate. I vaguely remembered him, though I forgot his name—he was the famous, quiet straightA student in their major.

I walked over, tossed the box into his lap, and tilted my chin. "It’s yours." With that, I turned around and walked out of the lounge.

Whatever happened in that room after I left was no longer my business.

Being rejected was one thing, but realizing Tyler had been playing hardtoget just to keep me on his hook made me sick.

He had probably been laughing at how gullible I was behind my back. And I actually spent so much money on a guy like that?

Even though that money was pocket change to me, spending even a single penny on a piece of trash was a waste! You want to play games with me, Tyler? Fine. You'll regret this.

Opening · Chapter 4

After my fallout with Tyler, Hailey became even more insufferable in our apartment, constantly throwing passiveaggressive digs at me.

Two days later, Gaby told me that Hailey and Tyler had officially announced their relationship on Instagram. I had blocked Tyler on Snapchat right after that night.

Gaby showed me Hailey’s post. It was a photo of them standing in front of the campus library, holding books and leaning in close. They looked like the perfect college couple.

So it wasn't that he wasn't ready; he just already had another target. I hadn't even noticed they were fooling around behind my back!

No wonder Hailey was always picking fights with me. That evening, Hailey walked into the apartment holding a massive bouquet of roses.

She deliberately placed them on my desk, putting on a fake, apologetic smile. "Oh, Chloe, this bouquet is just too big for my desk. Mind if I leave it on yours while I tidy up?

You don't mind, right?" "Actually, I do." I grabbed the bouquet and threw it straight onto the floor. "Don't put your trash on my desk. Did I give you permission?" "Chloe!

You're going too far!" Hailey shrieked, quickly picking up the flowers and carefully blowing the dust off the petals. I glanced at them.

The roses weren't even fresh; some were already wilting. "Did you pick those up from a dumpster? Wow, you really love picking up trash, don't you? First the flowers, now Tyler.

You should just rename yourself 'The Recycling Bin'." "Chloe, shut up! Who are you calling trash?" Hailey slammed the flowers down and lunged at me.

I had mentioned before in the apartment that I had a black belt in Taekwondo. I slowly slid into a professional stance and raised an eyebrow at her, giving her a mocking look.

Seeing my posture, Hailey instantly lost her courage. She took two steps back and muttered defensively, "I know you're just jealous. I'm not going to sink to your level." Me?

Jealous of her? That was easily the funniest joke of the year.
