Opening · Chapter 1

I had been on the donor registry for three long years, and my turn had finally come.

But just because his childhood best friend said she "wanted to see what a cornea looked like," my fiancé went behind my back and authorized the hospital to transfer them.

Of course, his precious childhood friend "accidentally" dropped the medical transport cooler.

The preservation fluid leaked, the vial shattered, and the corneas were completely ruined. Livid, I screamed at him for his sheer stupidity.

He just shrugged, utterly indifferent. "So what? The blind bat who needs the corneas is your mother anyway. Why should I care?" I laughed.

I forgot to mention one tiny detail: the blind person currently waiting in the operating room for that transplant... was his own mother, whom he had sworn to cherish and protect.

Three years ago, I registered on the organ donor list. After waiting over a thousand days, I finally got the call from the hospital. "Miss Vance, we have a matching pair of corneas.

We can schedule the transplant for next Monday." Thrilled, I immediately called my fiancé, Liam Miller, to share the amazing news. But every single call went straight to voicemail.

I assumed he was buried in work. But when I opened Snapchat, I saw Liam had posted two new stories. "Back to where our youth began." "Revisiting the fields of our childhood.

The scenery is the same, and so is the person by my side." The attached photos showed him and his childhood friend, Lily Brooks, posing closely together.

Clenching my jaw, I snapped him: "Too busy to pick up my calls because you're out on a date with her?" Thirty minutes later, Liam finally replied. "Chloe, stop being so petty.

Lily and I haven't seen each other in forever. We're just catching up. If you keep annoying me, I'm blocking you." I sent another text. "The hospital just called.

The corneas are ready." A minute later, his reply popped up. "Stop bothering me.

Lily and I are busy right now." This wasn't the first time Liam had started a fight with me over Lily. He had blocked me countless times before.

Once, it was because I accidentally chipped a mug Lily had gifted him.

Another time, it was simply because I pointed out that Lily's behavior was a bit too flirtatious for a "friend." "Throwing another tantrum?" my best friend, Avery Davis, asked, patting my shoulder. "Liam is a terrible boyfriend.

The fact that he's willing to lash out at you for another woman proves he doesn't love you. Chloe, stop humiliating yourself for him." I let out a weary sigh. "I know.

But my grandfather is breathing down my neck about marriage.

If I don't get engaged by the end of this month, I'll lose my entire inheritance." Right now, Liam was the only viable candidate I had.

We had been dating for three years, and we were just one step away from the altar. "You said you needed to go to the hospital, right? Get in. I'll drive you," Avery said.

Before I could open the passenger door, my phone rang. It was the head surgeon. "Miss Vance, is there a change of plans for the cornea transplant?

I'm calling to remind you that corneas are extremely delicate during transport. Even a minor bump can ruin them, making the surgery impossible." I froze. "Transport?

What do you mean?" "Your fiancé came to the clinic and checked them out himself. He had all the paperwork signed under your name." My blood ran cold.

So that was what Liam meant by being "busy." He had intercepted the corneas! Without a second thought, I spammed Liam's phone.

After more than a dozen calls, he finally picked up, sounding absolutely furious. "Chloe! Are you insane? Stop spamming me!

You're being incredibly annoying!" "Where are the corneas?!" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady. "They are incredibly fragile! Send me your location right now.

I'm coming to get them." "Oh, those?" Liam's tone instantly became relaxed, even smug. "Too late. Lily accidentally knocked the cooler over.

The vial shattered, and the glass actually scratched Lily's hand. If you have some free time, come over and clean up the mess.

I'm taking Lily to the clinic to get her hand bandaged." A wave of pure rage surged through me. How could he talk about something so crucial with such utter indifference? "Liam!

Do you have any idea who those corneas were for—" "Yeah, yeah. Your blind mother, right?" Liam cut me off. "You've already waited three years. What's another five or ten?

Besides..." He chuckled, his voice dripping with malice. "I always hated how overbearing mothersinlaw can be. It's actually great that she's blind.

At least she won't be able to stick her nose into my business anymore. I've gotta go. Bye." The call ended. My fists clenched so hard my knuckles turned white.

My chest heaved as I tried to process his sheer cruelty. But after a minute of breathing, a dark sense of amusement washed over me. Why was I even mad? This wasn't my problem.

When the truth came out, Liam would be the one labeled a monster. After all, the person lying in that hospital bed waiting for the transplant... was his own mother.

Opening · Chapter 2

To be fair, Liam wasn't entirely wrong. Three years ago, my mother did have severe vision issues, and the doctors had recommended a cornea transplant.

But there were two massive secrets he didn't know. First, my family was not "middleclass" as I had let him believe. We were incredibly wealthy.

Three years ago, my father had already used his connections to fly my mother firstclass to a top private hospital in Europe for her transplant.

Her vision had been perfectly restored long ago. Second, late last month, Liam's mother, Martha, had snuck onto a construction site to salvage cheap discarded materials.

She accidentally fell into a pit of quicklime, which completely blinded her.

When she was rushed to the ER, the hospital had called me first. "Chloe, please don't tell Liam," Martha had begged me over the phone. "He's already working so hard at his job.

I don't want to stress him out." I knew it was wrong to keep this from her own son, so I had tried to tell him that very night.

But during those weeks, Liam was out partying with Lily day and night. He would stumble home past 3 AM and sleep like a log until noon.

There was literally no window of time to talk to him.

When the hospital notified me that a matching pair of corneas had finally become available under my registration, I figured I would just wait until the surgery date was locked in before breaking the news to Liam.

Who could have predicted he would pull a stunt like this? Oh, the irony. "Chloe, didn't you say the corneas would be ready soon?

I asked the nurse today, and she said there are no corneas available for me!" Looking at the blind old woman sitting in her hospital bed, I sighed and spoke in a calm, flat voice. "Martha, they were ready.

But Liam insisted on taking them out of the hospital to show Lily. Lily dropped them and broke the vial. They're ruined.

You'll just have to go back to the bottom of the waiting list." I expected Martha to gasp and curse her son for his foolishness.

Instead, she shrieked my name, whipping her head wildly toward the direction of my voice. "How could you be so selfish?! This is all your fault!

If you weren't so petty and jealous, Liam wouldn't have had to take the corneas out to appease Lily! You ruined my eyes! You're a murderer!" "Did I stutter?" I asked, my voice cold.

I had planned to be reasonable, but Martha's delusional logic proved she wasn't worth my breath. I turned on my heel to leave.

Remembering how she had recently been boasting about getting me a "bridal jewelry set" for our engagement, I threw over my shoulder, "By the way, Martha, I'm calling off the wedding.

You don't need to waste your time trying to find a cheap hundreddollar cubic zirconia ring anymore." As I closed the hospital door, I heard things shattering inside the room.

A barrage of screeching insults followed me down the hallway. "Who do you think you are, you ungrateful bitch?! My son is a senior manager at a major firm!

You should be begging to marry into our family! I never wanted you anyway!" "If it weren't for your master's degree, you wouldn't even be fit to wash Lily's feet!"

Opening · Chapter 3

By the time Liam and Lily returned from their little trip, I had already packed my bags and moved out of our shared apartment.

Liam called me, screaming before I could even say hello. "Chloe, have you lost your damn mind?!

We're literally getting married soon, and you're pulling this 'running away from home' drama? Get back here and make dinner.

Lily and I just drove for hours, and we're starving." "You want me to come back and cook for you and your mistress?" "Why do you have to be so toxic?!" Liam yelled. "So we broke a pair of corneas.

Big deal! Lily literally bought you a Starbucks drink to apologize. Can you grow up for once?" Before I could reply, he barked, "I just texted my mom to come over for dinner too.

On your way back, stop by the market and get some of those fresh crabs she likes." Now, that caught my attention. "You asked your mother to come over by herself?

Do you even know what happened to her eyes—" But Liam hung up on me before I could finish.

Sitting across from me, Avery rolled her eyes so hard they almost got stuck. "I cannot believe you wasted three years of your life on that absolute trash fire.

I'm going to have a stroke, Chloe!" She took a sip of her coffee and looked at me seriously. "But really, now that you've dumped him, what are you going to do about your grandfather?

Didn't he say if you don't get married this year, he's handing the entire family estate over to your cousin?" I smiled, patting Avery's shoulder. "Don't worry.

I've already taken care of it. There's a long line of men begging to marry me.

Liam isn't the only option." While Avery and I were enjoying our coffee, my phone buzzed continuously with Snapchats from Liam. "Where the hell are you? Lily is starving.

Is this how you treat guests?" "Stop by the bakery on West Street on your way back and get Lily a slice of her favorite mango millecrepe cake.

She only eats that one." "Chloe, are you dead? Get your ass back here now!" I stared at the screen, calmly clicked the topright corner, and blocked his number.

Half an hour later, an unknown number called. I picked up. "Chloe! You are a monster!" It was Lily's voice, shaking with anger and choked with tears. "You knew Martha was blind!

Why didn't you tell us?!

Do you have any idea she just got hit by a car?!" Listening to her sobbing, I asked dryly, "Was I the one driving the car?" Lily gasped, completely stunned. "Since I had nothing to do with it, calling me to point fingers is utterly pointless." I hung up.

I spent the next few days pampering myself, staying at a luxury hotel before finally driving to my newly purchased condo.

But as soon as I pulled up to the gated community entrance, my way was blocked.

A crowd of people dressed in black had gathered, some kneeling and wailing loudly, drawing a massive crowd of onlookers.

At the front of the crowd, holding a massive, framed funeral portrait, was Liam. "Chloe Vance!" he screamed, his eyes bloodshot. "You heartless witch! You murdered my mother!

Give me back her life!"
