Opening · Chapter 1
Ever since we got married, Ethan Montgomery would always send me a single number before he cheated. The number represented how many months his new toy would last.
He loved novelty, but his interest usually capped out at three months. But this time, he hadn’t sent me a number in a whole year.
His new girl, Hailey Jenkins, had been so spoiled by him that she actually showed up at my villa to confront me. "Do you know what Ethan loves about me?" she sneered.
I kept my head down, gently petting my Persian cat, not even giving her a glance. "He loves how wild I am in bed," she bragged. "You're too stiff.
No man could ever love a boring woman like you." I remained completely unfazed by her provocation.
The next day, I hired a severely disabled, incontinent elderly woman and had her delivered straight to Ethan’s corporate office. "Your assistant, Hailey, told me you like them wild and messy," I said, walking into his conference room. "This lady hasn’t been able to control her bladder in years.
She’s practically pickled in her own waste. Do you like her, honey?" In the lobby, the whispers and muffled laughter of the employees echoed through the halls.
Ethan’s face turned an icy shade of blue. He barked an order to his security team. "Get her out of here! Now!" His men moved instantly, treating his word like a holy decree.
I stepped forward, blocking their path. "I'm paying her three thousand dollars a day.
Letting her leave now would be a massive waste of my money." Ethan pulled out his phone and tapped the screen twice. "I just sent thirty million to your account. You're Mrs.
Montgomery. You don't need to pinch pennies over this garbage." Gasps erupted from the crowd of onlookers. "God, when will I find a man that rich?
If my husband gave me thirty million, he could have ten mistresses and I’d personally nurse them through postpartum." I let out a cold laugh.
Every time I was slightly displeased, Ethan would throw money at the problem to sweep it under the rug. Honestly, I didn't mind.
After all, when I schemed to marry into his family, it was solely for his wealth and his decentlooking face.
I didn't care who he slept with, but having a bastard child was where I drew the line. I scanned the lobby but didn't see that smug face. "Where’s Hailey?
If she hadn't told me you'd changed your tastes, I wouldn’t have known. I really need to thank her in person." "Hailey called in sick today," someone in the crowd whispered.
I smiled sweetly. "Then I’ll come back tomorrow to thank her facetoface." Ethan frowned. He grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward his private office. This time, I didn't resist.
In the adult world, there was no need to burn every bridge completely.
Knowing when to step back and keeping up a gentle, cooperative facade was one of the reasons Ethan chose me as his wife in the first place.
He closed the door, his face dark. "Why are you pushing this?" "Because Hailey is pregnant." My voice trembled slightly as I spat those words out.
I stared daggers at Ethan, feeling an unexpected wave of bitterness rise in my chest. Ethan froze. Clearly, he hadn't known about this.
I couldn't help but sneer. "Your little songbird is quite clever.
She managed to trap you into getting her pregnant." Ethan unlocked his phone and tapped the screen again. "I'll make her get an abortion," he promised.
I pressed him, stepping closer. "How many days?" "A week." "Three days." "She’s young and sensitive.
She needs time to prepare mentally," Ethan said, a hint of tenderness slipping into his voice. In his mind, I was always the easy one to appease.
A wire transfer and a few sweet words were all it took, so he never had to worry about my feelings. Normally, I wouldn't push him this hard. But this time was different.
Hailey actually held weight in his heart. Feeling suffocated, I stepped closer to Ethan and reached out to adjust his lapel. A flashy pink brooch pinned to his chest caught my eye.
He never used to wear such tacky things. It seemed loving someone really could change a man’s entire style. A thought crossed my mind—maybe I should find someone to play with, too.
Just to burn off this toxic energy. "The longer you wait, the more the embryo develops, and the more it'll hurt her. I'm just looking out for Hailey's health.
If you can't handle it, honey, I'll gladly do it for you." "Don't you dare!" Ethan gripped my wrist tightly, his voice dripping with warning.
I had rarely seen him lose control like this. I wrenched my hand free, dropping my gentle act. "Then get it cleaned up within three days. It’s better for everyone.
Otherwise, I don't mind having a life on my hands." Ethan stared at me, shocked by the wild, untamable defiance that had replaced my usual submissive demeanor.
He had almost forgotten that years ago, Scarlett Vance was the wildest, most dazzling red rose of Manhattan's elite.
But after her mother and brother passed away, her father left the entire family estate to his illegitimate son, leaving her with absolutely nothing.
That was when her personality changed completely. Seeing this side of me again seemed to spark a strange novelty in him. Ethan finally nodded, agreeing to my terms.
He had rules for his flings. The girls could have their little tantrums, but they had to fall in line when it came to major decisions. Hailey had crossed the line.
She needed to be dealt with. I turned around and walked out of the building.
Opening · Chapter 2
The driver looked at me through the rearview mirror. "Where to, ma'am?" "SsGo." The driver looked taken aback.
I remained expressionless. "Ethan’s credit card statements show he visits that club frequently. I know exactly what kind of place it is.
Just drive." When we arrived at SsGo, the daytime crowd was sparse.
A handsome young host immediately walked up to greet me. "What can I do for you, beautiful?" "I’m looking for a man." He blinked, then quickly flashed a charming, sycophantic smile. "What about me?
Do I fit the bill?" I looked past him and spotted a figure wiping down a table in the corner. Even with his head down, his side profile looked incredibly clean and innocent.
I pointed directly at him. The host pouted. "Oh, him? He’s just a college student working parttime. He doesn't know how to please a woman.
Play with me instead, I promise I'll take good care of you." "I want him." I already had a dirty man at home.
When I played outside, I wanted something spotless. "Ashton!" the host called out. "The lady wants you." Ashton Pierce walked over, hiding the cleaning rag behind his back.
He gave me a shy, polite nod. "Ma'am." He stood there stiffly, like a kid sent to the principal's office—pure, awkward, and completely out of his depth. "Go bring me a bottle of wine.
The most expensive one you have. Put it on my card so you get the commission." I slid my black Amex card across the table. Ashton stared at it in shock.
The host nudged him, whispering, "What are you waiting for? She’s giving you a golden opportunity. Take it!" Ashton took the card and hurried over to the bar.
I casually flipped through a book left on the table. How to Win a Man's Heart. Before Ashton could return, my phone began vibrating like crazy. It was Ethan.
He had obviously just received the Amex purchase alert. I declined the call and shut the phone off completely. Immediately after, the driver’s phone started ringing.
He nervously answered, putting it on speaker. Ethan’s cold, commanding voice echoed through the car. "Bring her home.
Now." For some reason, a wave of sheer satisfaction washed over me. "Are you this angry because you're worried I'll cheat?" I asked into the speaker. "Do you suddenly care about loyalty, Ethan?" Ethan fell dead silent.
I looked down at the book. It said a woman must know how to act—turn a drop of affection into a flood of devotion, play victim, play the fool.
Feeling playful, I decided to test out the book's advice. "I wasn't going to do anything bad," I said, my voice dropping into a soft, vulnerable whimper. "But this is your favorite place.
I just wanted to learn what you like so you might love me a little more." Ethan’s tone softened instantly. "Just come home." I continued my act, mixing a grain of truth with a mountain of lies. "No matter how good those other women are, you won't forget about me, right?" On the other end of the line, Ethan’s throat tightened.
He was driving so fast he didn't even notice the red light he just blew through.
Fortunately, he was driving a blackedout Maybach with a custom singledigit plate that cops wouldn't dare pull over.
He had a clear path. "Here's your wine, ma'am." Ashton’s youthful voice cut through the call like a bomb, causing Ethan to lose his composure. "You have zero tolerance for alcohol!
Don't you dare drink that!" I picked up the glass and took a long sip of the rich liquid. My low tolerance was just another lie I told Ethan so he wouldn't think I was too wild.
If I actually wanted to, I could drink any man under the table.
Ethan heard the sound of me swallowing. "Did you just drink it?" "Yes." Because the book said a slight buzz is the perfect catalyst for intimacy.
While I didn't care about his affection, I did need a child.
Once I had one, I could get Ethan sterilized and secure my future once and for all. "Keep an eye on her," Ethan snapped at the driver before hanging up.
Ashton handed my black card back with both hands, his fingers warm. I took the card and leaned back on the sofa, waiting for Ethan to arrive.
Maybe it was the alcohol, but Ashton looked exceptionally pleasing to the eye.
I casually asked, "Are you a virgin?" Ashton’s eyes widened in sheer shock, his cheeks flushing a deep crimson as he gave a frantic nod. "Yyes." Right then, the VIP room door was violently kicked open.
I immediately lay down on the sofa, pretending to be utterly drunk.
Opening · Chapter 3
Ethan’s rushed footsteps approached, and then his strong arms scooped me up. "I told you not to drink, yet you did it anyway.
Is this how the wife of Ethan Montgomery should behave?" His voice carried a hint of frustration, but mostly worry. Using the fake drunk act, I mumbled my demand. "I want a baby.
I can give you one. You don't need Hailey's." His footsteps halted.
To keep the Montgomery patriarchs happy, Ethan would occasionally return to the villa to check off his husbandly duties.
But because of my own toxic family background, I had never wanted to bring a child into this world. Until now. "We'll talk about that after I handle Hailey," he whispered.
I didn't answer. I pretended to fall fast asleep. Ethan carried me back to the villa, tucked me into bed, and left immediately. I didn't waste any time.
I took the thirty million Ethan had given me and began shorting my father's company. Under my quiet manipulation over the years, his business was already on the brink of collapse.
But I didn't just want it to struggle—I wanted them bankrupt. I wanted them to lose everything, just like I did.
The stock charts on my laptop screen flickered, mirroring the chaos in my mind. Three days later, Ethan returned.
Without a single word, he dragged me into the bedroom, leaning down to whisper in my ear, "Let's make a baby." He didn't mention what happened to Hailey, and I didn't ask.
I simply wrapped my arms around his neck. "Okay." Ethan was incredibly gentle tonight, as if I were a piece of delicate porcelain that would shatter at any moment.
But this time, I was highly active, tangling my legs with his. Hailey was right—no man liked a boring, passive woman.
Surprised and thrilled by my sudden passion, Ethan let go of his usual restraint, turning wild and dominant.
After hours of breathless, relentless intimacy, I was completely exhausted. Ethan carried me to the bathroom to wash me off.
His long, elegant fingers gently traced my brows and the bridge of my nose. The bathroom was dead silent, save for the sound of our synchronized breathing.
I didn't even have the energy to open my eyes, letting him carry me back to the bed. But I knew Ethan too well. Something was off.
The reason was obvious—Hailey's baby was still alive. He hadn't kept his promise to me. He didn't bring it up, and I didn't ask.
It was the final piece of dignity keeping this marriage intact.
Every day, I would send Ethan a Snapchat message. "Are you coming home tonight?" And his reply was always instant: "Yes." They say physical intimacy breeds affection, and it seemed to be true.
Ethan, who used to despise the smell of grease and cooking, actually started making dinner for me.
He even spent hours cuddling on the couch watching mindless reality TV with me—wasting time that was usually worth millions. "I want to start working at the firm," I said one night. "Work is too exhausting," Ethan replied, stroking my hair. "Why not just stay home and be my pampered queen?
Isn't it nice to have everyone serve you?" He was rejecting me. I didn't argue. Instead, I snuggled closer into his chest. "You work so hard for this family, honey.
I got you a gift." Under his watchful eyes, I went to the closet and changed into a set of provocative lace lingerie. Ethan’s eyes darkened instantly, flashing with a primal hunger.
He stood up, grabbed a plush blanket, and wrapped it securely around me. "You don't need to do this, Scarlett." I looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "I thought you liked it.
I just wanted to make you happy." Ethan knew I still hadn't let go of Hailey's words. A wave of guilt and tenderness washed over him.
Looking at my seemingly pure, untainted face, he gently cupped my cheek and carried me back to the bed. "I love you just the way you are.
I'll arrange a position for you at the firm tomorrow.
But once you get pregnant, you have to stop working." I wrapped my arms around his neck, planting a soft kiss on his lips while hiding a triumphant smirk.
I had successfully infiltrated his company. Now, I could finally execute the final blow to ruin my father's business.
Opening · Chapter 4
Everyone in the corporate office said the project I proposed was a suicide mission—it would hurt our competitors, but it would also cost us a fortune.
Yet, Ethan, behaving like a completely lovesick fool, signed off on it without a single second of hesitation.
To the outside world, that document represented Ethan’s overwhelming love for me.
But to me, it was the key that allowed me to audit all of Ethan's personal and business transactions. I stared at the financial records on my screen.
Millions of dollars were constantly being wired to an offshore account in the US. Hailey’s face flashed in my mind.
Through the glass wall of my office, Ethan watched me space out, a fond smile gracing his lips.
Even though his wife didn't really do much actual work, just having her sit there like a beautiful, precious doll made his day.
Lately, my body had been feeling heavier and more fatigued. I decided to visit the clinic. The moment I held the positive pregnancy test in my hand, I didn't hesitate for a second.
I booked a oneway flight to the US. I sent Ethan a quick text: "Going to visit an old friend for a week.
Don't miss me too much." Ethan replied instantly: "I'll go with you." He had become so accustomed to having me around that he couldn't stand being away from me for even a day. "No way.
It's a girls' trip. No boys allowed." Reading my reply, Ethan felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down his spine.
He immediately ordered his secretary to find out where I was flying.
But he didn't know I had already bribed his secretary. "I’m planning a massive surprise for Ethan," I had told her. "If he asks where I went, just tell him I flew to Miami.
Nothing else." "She went to Miami," the secretary reported. Hearing this, Ethan let out a sigh of relief. Thank God it wasn't the US mainland where Hailey was staying.
He texted me back: "Stay safe. I love you." I boarded the plane to New York. Touching my flat stomach, I whispered, "Don't worry, sweetie.
Mommy is going to clear all the obstacles for you." I spent millions of dollars hiring a team of local mercenaries to break into the private estate in New York and force Hailey into an abortion.
The entire scene was streamed live to my laptop. On the screen, Hailey was pinned to the floor, her abdomen being struck repeatedly. "Stop!
Please stop!" she screamed, sobbing hysterically. "Save my baby! Someone help me!" Blood began pooling beneath her, staining the white rug. Her face turned as pale as a corpse.
Once my men retreated, she crawled to her phone and dialed a number. Her screams were bloodcurdling. "Ethan! The baby is gone! It's all gone... there’s so much blood!
Someone broke in and killed our baby!" "It was Scarlett! It had to be her! You have to kill her, Ethan! If you don't kill her, I don't want to live anymore!" The call disconnected.
My secondary phone buzzed. It was an automated notification. Then, Ethan’s call came through. "Did you do this?!" he roared.
The evidence was undeniable, and I had no intention of lying. "Yes." "Why?!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking. "I kept her hidden abroad! She was never going to bother you!
We were finally happy, Scarlett! Why did you have to destroy it? Do you have any idea how much my parents and grandparents were waiting for this child?
You’ve gone too far!" "And what about you? Why did you lie to me?" I yelled back, my own tears finally spilling over. "You promised me you'd handle it, but you kept her pregnant.
Do you love her that much? Were you that desperate to keep your little love child?" From my laptop screen, Hailey’s pathetic wailing continued to echo.
Hearing it, Ethan lost all rationality. "Are you still at the estate?! Get the hell out of there!
Don't you dare touch her again!" A sudden, dark spite flared up inside me. "And if I refuse?" "Then I will make you pay for her life with yours," Ethan said, his voice deadly serious.
All the sweetness of the past few weeks vanished like a mirage. He had only been playing nice to keep me calm so Hailey could safely deliver his child. He had never loved me.
He married me to have a respectable, quiet wife to show off to his family while he ran wild outside. But I was a human being.
I was done being humiliated. "One life isn't enough," I whispered into the phone. "I should pay you back with two." "I’ll pay you back right now."
