Opening · Chapter 1

For a company outing, as the sales manager, I took a few people from my department to entertain an important client.

That included Tina Brooks, who had only been with us for two months. She was sweettalking and sharp, and she was one of the new hires the department was focusing on training.

After a few rounds of drinks, that client, Lewis, kept eyeing Tina like a creep and insisted she do a couple’s toast with him.

Tina’s face went pale, and her hand shook so badly she could barely hold her glass, while her pleading eyes kept darting toward me. I didn’t think too much at the time. Mr.

Lewis was a major client, and we couldn’t ruin his mood, but Tina was obviously at her limit.

As the person in charge of the department, protecting my team and keeping the drinking under control was part of my job. If I didn’t step up then, who would?

I stood up, smiled, took Tina’s glass, and said to Mr. Lewis: “Mr. Lewis, she’s new and really doesn’t know how to drink yet. I’ll take this one for her.

Please don’t take it the wrong way.” Mr. Lewis burst out laughing, patted my shoulder, and said, “Manager Miller, you’re pretty straightforward!

But if you’re playing the knightinshiningarmor card, one drink isn’t enough. Three drinks would show real sincerity!” He was clearly cornering me.

To keep the client happy and to put this whole thing behind us, I said nothing and picked up the glass. I tipped my head back and gulped down two more drinks. Mr.

Lewis laughed and patted my shoulder, saying I knew how to play ball, and that settled it.

I finally relaxed and subconsciously looked over at Tina to make sure she really was safe, then went back to my seat.

I kept chatting with an older coworker next to me, and after that I didn’t have any more contact with her.

I thought it was just another perfectly ordinary business dinner, a small favor done with one hand. But the next morning, the department SnapChat group exploded.

Tina posted in the group: “Everyone, I drank too much last night, and my head was all over the place.” “I feel like someone touched me when I wasn’t fully aware.” “I don’t want to make this a big deal, and I don’t want to call anyone out by name, since we still have to work together.” “I just hope you know better now and don’t let this happen again.” “Otherwise, I’ll have to go through the company’s official process.” Those words were like a bomb, instantly blowing up the whole department.

At dinner last night, it was just the few of us men, and the client had already left. The rest of us were all on the same team. And the only one who had drunk for Tina was me.

Almost everyone’s eyes naturally landed on me. Someone immediately jumped in in the group. “Oh my god, Tina, are you okay?

Who would be so bold?” “That’s a complete workplace predator! Tina, don’t be scared, we all support you!” Tina replied with a crying emoji: “I’m fine.

I just feel really wronged and scared. I just wanted to remind that person.” I was looking at project files at the time.

When I saw those messages, I immediately sent her a private message, but she didn’t reply. I called her, and she hung up. I realized I couldn’t argue in the group.

That would only make me look worse. I forced down my anger and got through the whole morning.

At lunch, I saw her go into the break room alone, so I followed her, called her into a meeting room, and asked her with barely suppressed anger: “Tina, say it clearly.

Who are you talking about in the group?

What exactly did I do to you last night?” The moment she walked into the meeting room, tears started falling nonstop, like she had suffered some huge injustice. “Jason, I didn’t name you.” She sniffled.

Her voice was soft, but every word felt like a stab. “Why did you drink for me?” “Didn’t you just want to get me indebted to you so you could ask me for something later?” “Who doesn’t understand the dirty little thoughts middleaged men like you have?” “You kept staring at me after you drank.

I was scared!” I was shaking with rage and pointed at her. “I stared at you?

Tina, do you even have a conscience?” “I was only keeping an eye on things so the client wouldn’t keep pushing you to drink!” “Did I lay a hand on you?

Did I even touch a single hair on your head?” “You didn’t touch me, but your eyes looked like you wanted to eat me alive!” Her crying got louder. “Do you think that because you drank for me, I should be grateful to you and let you do whatever you want?” “Jason, please, I’m begging you, leave me alone.

I’m just a new intern who just graduated. I don’t want to lose my job.” She twisted the truth, dodged the real issue, and turned my kindness into a complete premeditated scheme.

Before I could even argue back, the meeting room door was pushed open, and the department director, Mr. Walker, stood there with a dark face.

Behind him, a few coworkers were peeking in, their faces full of gossip and contempt. It was obvious they had all heard Tina’s tearful accusation. Mr.

Walker looked at the crying Tina, then at me with an extremely disappointed expression, and coldly said, “Jason, come to my office.” At that moment, I knew I had fallen into a carefully planned trap.

And this was only the beginning of the nightmare.

Opening · Chapter 2

In Mr. Walker’s office, the atmosphere was suffocating.

He didn’t give me any chance to explain and just threw a file in front of me. “Jason, the company is kicking off Project Phoenix.

I don’t need to tell you how important this project is.” “Originally, you were the first choice to lead it.” Mr.

Walker crossed his fingers and looked at me sharply. “But now, look at the mess you’ve made!” “What matters most to the company? Its reputation! You’re stuck in a scandal right now.

How are you supposed to win people over? How are you supposed to lead a team?” My heart sank.

Project Phoenix was something I had fought for after countless allnighters and half a year of leading the team through a brutal push.

It was my biggest performance target for the year. “Mr. Walker, this is slander! Tina and I are completely innocent. I can swear to God!” I argued anxiously. Mr.

Walker gave a cold laugh. “Now the whole department is saying you harassed a new female coworker while drunk.” “Jason, rumors are dangerous.

Until this is fully investigated, you’re stepping away from the project.” “I’ll hand it off to someone else for now.

Cool off first and handle your personal mess.” My heart went icecold. This was the classic move to smooth things over.

For the sake of company stability, he would rather sacrifice me. As for the truth, he didn’t care at all. “Mr. Walker—” “That’s enough.

Get out.” He waved his hand and picked up his teacup, clearly unwilling to say more.

I walked out of the director’s office like a man who had lost his soul, and what greeted me were all kinds of looks from my coworkers.

Some were sympathetic, some were contemptuous, some were gloating, and more than a few were deliberately avoiding me.

The coworkers who usually acted like buddies with me now looked at me like I was bad luck and all lowered their heads to pretend they were busy.

It felt like the whole world was against me. As for Tina, she was being surrounded by a few female coworkers right then. They were comforting her while shooting hateful looks at me.

Tina, meanwhile, acted weak and frightened at just the right moments. Every time my gaze drifted over, she would shrink behind someone else in fear. She was too good at this.

By using her position as a vulnerable woman, she easily won everyone’s sympathy and nailed me to the shame board.

After work, I dragged my exhausted body home, hoping to get some comfort from my wife, Sarah.

But the moment I opened the door, I saw her cold face. “You still know how to come back?” She was sitting on the sofa with a pillow in her arms. “What’s wrong, babe?” I walked over and tried to hug her.

She shoved her phone screen in front of me.

It was a post from an anonymous workplace forum, with the title: “Let’s expose that married, greasy sales manager at my company who publicly harassed the new girl.

Gross!” The post used vague aliases and highly inflammatory language to vividly describe “that night’s story.” It said how I had “used the excuse of covering for her drinks to put my hands all over the girl,” and how I had “used lewd looks to hint at more,” and it even made up the lie that I had “kept harassing her by message afterward.” There were over a hundred comments below it. “This kind of guy should be castrated!” “Poor girl.

And poor his wife, married to a piece of trash.” “Don’t say that. Maybe his wife is already used to it.

Birds of a feather.” Every comment was like a knife stabbing hard into my heart. “Babe, this isn’t true! Tina set me up!” I grabbed her hand and tried to explain. “Set you up?

She’s just a young girl who just joined the company.

Why would she set up a sales manager like you for no reason?” Sarah’s eyes were red as she slammed her phone onto the coffee table, her voice trembling. “Jason, is what this says true?” “No!

Babe, this is a setup!” I hurried to defend myself. “A setup?

Then why would she set up someone else?” Her tears finally fell. “Do you know how I felt when my best friend forwarded me this post?

I felt like the sky had collapsed on me.” “I didn’t do it!” I felt completely speechless, and a wave of helplessness washed over me.

I tried to reach for her hand, but she yanked away. She turned around, went into the bedroom, and came back with a folder, then threw it in front of me.

It was a printed divorce agreement. She looked at me with nothing but disappointment and resolve in her eyes. “I’ve thought about it all afternoon.

We should separate.” After saying that, she turned and went into the bedroom, slamming the door hard behind her. That night, I sat alone in the guest room until dawn.

The city outside was lit up, but my world was pitchblack. I realized Tina’s attack was allout.

She was destroying my career at the company, destroying my reputation online, and now she was starting to destroy my family. This woman was terrifyingly scheming.

I couldn’t just sit here and wait to die. Private communication was useless now. I needed evidence. I needed ironclad proof that would shut everyone up for good.

I forced myself to calm down and replayed that night in my mind. The drinking, the client, the private room—wait. There were cameras in the private room!

I went to that restaurant all the time, and I was on decent terms with Mr. Grant. He would definitely have a backup of the footage.

At dawn, I picked up my phone and called the manager of the restaurant where we had that client dinner.

We had dealt with each other a few times and were on decent terms. “Hey, Grant, this is Jason.

I need to ask you for a favor—” I briefly explained the situation, and there was a few seconds of silence on the other end. Mr.

Grant sighed. “Jason, normally we can’t just give out security footage to outsiders.” “But for your situation, I’ll trust you once.

I’m not in the store this afternoon, so you’ll need to come pick it up yourself. I’ll leave instructions at the front desk.”

Opening · Chapter 3

The call with Mr. Grant from the restaurant went pretty smoothly.

I asked him, using the excuse that the company needed to verify entertainment expenses, to make a copy of the full security footage from the private room where we had eaten that day.

Mr. Grant agreed readily and said someone could deliver it in the afternoon. Right after I hung up, my motherinlaw’s number called in. “Jason! You shameless piece of trash!

How are you still alive and looking people in the eye?” Her voice shot at me like a machine gun. “Our Sarah must have used up every ounce of bad luck in her life to end up marrying you!” “What if you fool around outside and bring some filthy disease home?

How are you going to answer to us?” I was totally confused. “Mom, what are you talking about? I didn’t—” “You still dare to argue!

Sarah already told me!” “You harassed a young girl at work, and the post is already online!” “You’ve made our whole family look disgusting!” “I’m telling you, I already took my daughter back to my house.

A piece of trash like you doesn’t deserve to see her again!” “If you still have even a little conscience, hurry up and divorce her.

Don’t keep dragging her down!” “Mom, all of that is fake. Someone set me up!” “I’m telling you, don’t come looking for Sarah these next few days, and don’t call her either.

If you do, I’ll have my son break your legs!” She hung up on me hard. I held the phone, my hands and feet going cold.

Tina hadn’t just ruined my career and driven a wedge between me and my wife. Now she had turned the fire on my entire family. I immediately called Sarah. No one answered.

I sent a SnapChat message. I was blocked. I always thought that even if the whole world misunderstood me, Sarah would still stand by me. But reality slapped me hard in the face.

Five years of marriage, and in front of rumors with no solid proof, it was fragile beyond belief. I rushed out of the house and drove straight to my motherinlaw’s place.

I had to explain everything to Sarah in person! But I didn’t even make it through the gate of her neighborhood. Security stopped me right away and said, “Mr. Miller, Mrs.

Carter told us not to let you in.” I stood at the entrance, looking at that familiar building, and felt like the whole world had abandoned me.

When I got back to the company, waiting for me was an even heavier blow. Mr.

Walker called me into his office again, and his face looked worse than yesterday. “Jason, take a look for yourself!” He pushed a tablet in front of me.

On the screen was the anonymous forum post, and the original poster had updated it again. “Latest update!

That bastard not only shows no remorse, he also threatened the victim and said he’d make her unable to work in the industry!” “The poor girl was so scared she didn’t even dare come to work today.

She’s crying at home.” “Even the bastard’s wife found out. She’s already fighting with him and wants a divorce. Serves him right!” There was also a candid photo attached below it.

In the photo, I was standing at the meeting room door, face dark, pointing at something.

Even though you couldn’t see Tina, the text made the photo into ironclad proof that I had threatened her. And Tina had indeed taken a sick day today.

Every step she took was calculated to perfection.

First she acted weak, then pretended to be sick, completely locking in her “victim” identity, while painting me as the “attacker” in the most vivid way possible. “Jason, I’ll ask you one last time.

What exactly happened?” Mr. Walker’s voice had no patience left in it, only cold accusation. “She set me up! Mr.

Walker, all of this was planned by her!” I pointed at the photo. “This photo is taken out of context!” “At the time, she was in the meeting room slandering me.

I got angry and argued back. I never threatened her!” Mr.

Walker shook his head, his face full of disappointment. “At this point, you’re still making excuses.” “Jason, the company has invested in you for so many years.

You’ve really disappointed me.” “Starting today, Project Phoenix is completely under Tina’s control.” “Turn over the rest of your current work too.

The company has decided to suspend you for reflection.” Suspended for reflection! Those four words completely stunned me. How was that any different from being fired?

In the workplace, once that label was put on you, your career was basically over. No matter where I went after this, this socalled black mark would follow me. “Mr.

Walker, you can’t do this! This isn’t fair!” I stood up in anger. “Fair?” Mr. Walker looked at me coldly. “The company’s reputation is the biggest fairness there is.

If you don’t accept it, you can go through legal channels.” “But let me remind you, the company legal department isn’t soft.

Now get out!” I don’t know how I made it out of that office. The whole afternoon, I was busy handing over my work.

Those coworkers who used to greet me with smiles now looked at me like I was trash. I packed up my personal things and left the place I had fought for nearly ten years.

When I walked out of the company building holding a cardboard box, my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was a message from the person Mr. Grant sent from the restaurant: “Mr.

Miller, the item has been left at your building’s front desk. It’s a black USB drive.” My spirits lifted. This was my only hope right now.

I quickly walked to the front desk and signed for the envelope containing the USB drive. I clutched it tightly in my hand.

This little piece of metal was my only shot at turning everything around. But when I got home, I found two people standing at the door: the landlord and his broadshouldered son.

When the landlord saw me, he said impatiently, “Jason, hurry up and pack your stuff and move out. I’m not renting this place to you anymore.” I froze. “Why?

The lease still has six months left, and I’ve paid my rent on time.” “Why?” The landlord snorted. “Your wife’s mother called me.

She said you’re a sleazy guy with bad character,” “and told me to get you out fast so you wouldn’t dirty up my place!” “I don’t care about the mess between you and your wife, but I’m not letting you ruin my property’s reputation!” “This is the penalty.

Take the money and move out today!” He shoved a stack of cash into my arms, and his son stepped forward, staring at me with threatening eyes. Career, family, home.

In just three days, I had lost everything. I had been forced completely to the edge of a cliff, with a bottomless abyss behind me.

Opening · Chapter 4

I had been kicked out of the home I’d lived in for five years. The landlord and his son stood over me like supervisors, watching me pack everything up.

I took my clothes and a few necessities. When I dragged two suitcases and held a cardboard box while standing by the side of the road, night had already fallen.

The city’s neon lights were flashing, but not one of them was shining for me. I had become homeless.

I got a room at a nearby hotel and, after dumping my luggage there, threw myself hard onto the bed.

I stared at the light on the ceiling, my mind blank, while at the same time it felt like countless voices were screaming in my head. Had I really done something wrong?

If I hadn’t stepped in back then, would none of this have happened? I don’t know how long passed before my phone rang. It was an old coworker, Leo.

He was an old hand at the company, well connected, and a pretty decent guy. “Hey, Jason, you okay?” His voice carried a hint of sympathy. “I’m not dead yet.” My voice was hoarse. “Man, this whole thing got out of hand.

Everyone at the company is talking about it now.” Leo sighed. “This afternoon, Mr.

Walker officially announced that Project Phoenix would be fully handed over to Tina.” “That little girl even pretended in the meeting that even though Jason was stepping away for now,” “she would definitely carry on Jason’s spirit and do the project well.” “I almost threw up listening to it.” “She must be loving this right now.” My voice turned cold. “Loving it is an understatement!” Leo lowered his voice. “She’s basically a saint at the company now.

Everyone has to cater to her. A bunch of female coworkers are around her all day, checking on her and fussing over her.” “Mr.

Walker is treating her differently too and gave her a ton of special privileges.” “I heard they’re even planning to hold her up as a model of brave resistance against workplace harassment.

She’s definitely getting an award at the end of the year.” “Jason, listen to me. Just swallow this,” Leo advised. “You can’t beat her.

For a guy to keep fighting a young girl over something like this, no matter who wins, your reputation is done.” “Take one step back and the storm passes.

Once things cool down, go ask Mr. Walker for help.

Maybe you can still come back.” “Swallow it?” I sat up on the bed, a fire lighting in my eyes. “Leo, if a dog bites you, do you just swallow it, or do you kill the dog?” There was a pause on the other end. “—What the hell are you planning to do?

Don’t do anything stupid!” “Don’t worry, I’m not using my fists.

I’m using my brain.” I said each word slowly. “Leo, do me a favor.” “Tomorrow at ten in the morning, send a message in the department group saying I have the full video from that dinner.” “Say we’re holding a clarification meeting and that Mr.

Walker and all the coworkers must attend.” “The video? You really have a video?” Leo’s voice changed. “I do.” “Holy shit! Jason, that’s awesome! Fine, I’m in.

Damn it, I’ve long hated that little girl anyway!” After hanging up, I took the black USB drive out of my pocket and plugged it into my laptop.

The video file opened quickly, and a clear image appeared on the screen. The private room had a wideangle camera, which covered almost the entire room.

I fastforwarded to the night it happened, and the footage of Mr. Lewis forcing Tina to drink was crystal clear.

Then it showed me standing up, taking the glass, and downing three drinks.

After that, I clearly and without hesitation went back to my own seat, which was a full three people away from hers.

After that, I kept talking with the coworker next to me and never once turned my head back toward Tina. And in the video, after I drank for her, Tina showed no fear or panic at all.

Instead, she exchanged a glance with the female coworker beside her, flashed a smug look, and then lowered her head to play on her phone. My whole body stiffened.

I could barely believe my eyes. I hit pause and rewound it to watch again. No mistake.

That really was a smile, a smile full of contempt and triumph after everything had gone according to plan. Seeing that, my blood almost froze. That wasn’t the face of a victim.

That was the face of someone whose scheme had succeeded! So from the very beginning, this was a setup!

She deliberately played weak to pull me in, then used that to make a huge scene. Her goal was to steal my Project Phoenix!

I clipped out the key parts of the video and saved the complete original file with the timestamp in another folder. The evidence was airtight, with no room to fight back.

After finishing all that, I leaned back in my chair and let out a long breath of stale air. I sent Sarah one last message.

I knew she had blocked me, but she would see this message sooner or later. “Sarah, tomorrow at ten in the morning, I’ll prove I’m innocent.”
