Opening · Chapter 1
"I’m not going to be your mistress.
If you want to get married, tell your wife to be the mistress instead." This was the last text message I saw on Marcus Vance’s phone before I died.
Only then did I finally understand why my reputation had dragged from "medical genius" to "the whore who slept her way to the top." All because Marcus wanted to marry the daughter of the hospital's Vice President.
He tricked me onto the examination table and opened my cervix with a cold metal speculum.
Then, he turned to the medical students watching the demonstration and said: "Only patients with an incredibly promiscuous lifestyle would have a cervix looking this damaged." The examination room instantly filled with snickers and the sound of pens scratching on notepads.
From that day on, my reputation as a loose woman spread like wildfire throughout the hospital.
The coveted Attending position—which I had earned after pulling grueling night shifts for a whole year—was handed directly to Amber Sterling.
The two of them stole my research papers and became the golden couple of the medical world.
They sued me for plagiarism, forcing me to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. No hospital would ever hire me again.
Ultimately, I died of severe depression in a trashy, rented studio apartment. No one even came to claim my body. When I opened my eyes again.
I was crying on my knees on my parents' porch, banging on the door. "Dad, Mom, I was so wrong. Please, please forgive me." Today was my fifth wedding anniversary with Marcus.
But I was lying on the cold examination table, listening to his diagnosis. "Only someone with an incredibly promiscuous lifestyle would leave a wound like this." Marcus said it coldly as he quickly pulled the speculum out of me.
He had no expression. It was as if he was just declaring a simple fact: I was a whore. The medical students watching the demo looked down at me with pure disgust.
The sound of whispering and laughing rang in my ears. Amber stood extremely close to Marcus, wearing a brilliant smile. "I actually saw Chloe staying at Dr.
Pendelton's house late into the night a couple of days ago." Amber’s comment sealed my fate in everyone's eyes. I ignored the discomfort in my lower body and watched them coldly.
In my past life. Marcus had sweettalked me all night, convincing me to get a routine gynecological exam. It was all a trap.
He wanted to use this public exam to ruin my reputation, clearing the path for Amber. He didn't want Amber to be called a homewrecker when she stepped out with him.
Marcus threw my clothes back onto my body like they were trash. Then, Amber wrapped her arm around his, and they walked out of the room.
The whispers from the students didn't stop. "Poor Dr. Vance. Having such a disgusting, cheating wife." "If I were him, I’d divorce her instantly and marry Amber.
At least she has class." "Exactly. Dr. Vance is a genius surgeon and a research star. He deserves way better." I dressed myself and walked out of the clinic.
When I checked the schedule for the month, it was filled with night shifts again.
Ever since Marcus promoted to Deputy Chief of Surgery, he had used his power to give Amber a free pass. He dumped every single night shift onto me.
Meanwhile, Amber only worked halfdays and spent her afternoons drinking tea and shopping. I was so busy I didn't even have time to eat.
Marcus walked into the breakroom and set a lunchbox down in front of Amber. He cooed at her like she was a child. "I made this myself.
Taste it." The lunchbox was filled with beautifully prepared steak and veggies. The other nurses gasped in envy. "That looks way better than the cafeteria food.
I'm so jealous!" I stood in the corner, chewing on a cold, soggy turkey wrap. Looking at Marcus, I realized how pathetic my past devotion had been.
Marcus was a surgeon, and like all surgeons, he treated his hands like gold. At home, I never let him touch a single chore.
I cooked every meal for him, making sure he always had a warm lunch. Those hands had never cooked a single meal for me. Yet, for Amber, he spent hours preparing gourmet dishes.
Before I could even finish my wrap, I was called to Marcus's office.
Marcus looked at me, his eyes filled with impatience. "The Attending position has been given to Amber." I swallowed the bitterness in my throat. "On what grounds?
I worked night shifts for six months straight just for this promotion. Amber did nothing. Why does she get it?" Marcus sneered. "I’ve shielded you too much from reality.
On what grounds? On the grounds that her father is the Vice President of this hospital.
You studied hard for ten years, Chloe, but you just didn't get lucky with your birth." Tears pricked my eyes.
Marcus looked down on me now because I didn't have a powerful medical family. But who funded his eight years of medical school? It was me.
I took the small allowance my parents gave me and split it in half for him. By the end of every month, my pockets were completely empty.
I didn't dare tell my parents, so I took on parttime jobs. I went to class by day, handed out flyers by night, and wrote my thesis in the early hours of the morning.
I would rather drink tap water and eat plain bread than see Marcus suffer. We walked through hell handinhand for eight years. And in return, I got a divorce agreement.
Seeing my red eyes, Marcus softened slightly. "We've been married for five years, Chloe. Let's just go our separate ways and chase our own futures." I let out a cold laugh.
Now that he had climbed onto the Vice President's daughter, he was acting like a saint in front of me.
I signed my name on the divorce papers without hesitation. "I’ll give you the divorce. But what's mine is mine.
I will not hand my promotion to anyone else." Marcus chuckled, as if he had heard a joke. "You've really gone stupid from reading too many books." This was exactly how it went in my past life.
I walked out of the hospital with the divorce papers, and then the rumors started, my research was stolen, and my career was destroyed... But this time, I would not be so pathetic.
I called an Uber and went straight to the house I hadn't visited in years. I rang the doorbell and fell to my knees. "Dad, Mom... I’m so sorry."
Opening · Chapter 2
My parents looked at me kneeling at the door, tears of anger and grief streaming down their faces. Years ago, to marry Marcus, I had practically cut ties with them.
My dad had been so angry. He locked me in my room, forbidding me from seeing him. But nothing could change my mind.
After I went on a threeday hunger strike, my parents finally broke. They gave me an ultimatum: Marcus or them.
I cried until I almost fainted, bowed to them, and walked out of their lives to marry Marcus. Marcus had never met my parents.
After I got married, I secretly went back to check on them a few times. My dad had retired early out of pure anger, and my mom developed a heart condition from the stress.
In my past life, when the news of my death reached them... My mother had a heart attack and passed away. My father was mocked by all our relatives. "Having a daughter is useless.
She abandons her family for a man, leaving her parents to die alone." My father became a complete recluse, shutting himself away in depression until he died.
Remembering how my decisions had ruined my family, I sobbed uncontrollably. I apologized sincerely.
My mom hit my shoulder in anger, but her heart softened, and she pulled me into the house. My dad sighed. "It's good that you're home.
Just don't ever see him again." I nodded. "We’re divorced.
But Marcus still has things that belong to me." Following Marcus's orders, I went back to the hospital to hand over my duties.
Since I didn't get the promotion, I was going to resign soon. I received a text from Marcus: Go take care of the patient in Bed 3.
Amber isn't familiar with her case yet. I walked past Marcus's office. The door was slightly ajar, and Amber's giggles drifted out. "I haven't written a single word of my thesis.
Didn't you say Chloe has great research skills?" "Just take her draft and use it.
Don't let it go to waste." "With her background, she won't ever catch up to me, even if she works for another ten years." Marcus replied, "True.
She should feel honored to contribute to our careers." "Her files are all on her home computer.
I'll copy them tonight." Amber yawned. "I didn't sleep well last night, and it's all your fault.
I want to go home and take a nap." Marcus’s voice was filled with tenderness. "Go on. I'll have Chloe cover your shift.
Let's make sure she's put to good use." Listening to their conversation, my blood ran cold. This was the man I had loved for fifteen years.
To him, I was nothing but a tool to be exploited. Amber walked out of the office and saw me changing an IV bag.
She smirked and leaned in close. "Chloe, do you know where Marcus was the night you had your miscarriage?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "He was in my bed." "You were crying and bleeding all over the floor, but Marcus was screaming my name in my bed." When I was three months pregnant, I had severe abdominal pain in the middle of the night.
I called Marcus. He had answered with annoyance. "You're a doctor, Chloe.
Why are you calling me over a little stomach ache?" "I think something is wrong with the baby..." Marcus snapped, "You're just pregnant, not carrying royal blood.
Stop being so needy." He hung up. I called him dozens of times, but he never picked up again. I had to call an Uber to take myself to the ER.
Before I even reached the hospital, my pants were soaked in blood. By the time I was admitted, the baby was already gone. I cried alone in that cold hospital bed, shivering.
And his phone had remained unreachable. I let out a cold laugh. So that was the truth. "Marcus, get out here!" I yelled.
Hearing me shout right outside his office, Amber's face paled. "Are you crazy? What are you doing?" "I don't give a damn about what you two do in bed. But my Attending position?
I’m taking it back."
Opening · Chapter 3
Amber laughed even louder now. "Just an Attending position?
You begged for it with six months of night shifts, but I got it just by asking." "Did you honestly think Marcus would stand up for you?" Marcus stepped out of the office, and Amber’s face instantly changed into a victim's mask. "Marcus, your exwife... she's jealous of my promotion.
She says I don't deserve it." Marcus looked at me with deep disappointment. "You used to be reasonable, Chloe.
Now you're acting like a hysterical Karen." "If you're so jealous, go complain to Vice President Sterling." "If you can convince him, the position is yours." "Otherwise, screaming here won't change a thing." Vice President Sterling—Amber's father.
Those two were snakes of the same nest. Seeing a crowd gathering, Amber's little sidekick, Lily, stepped up to support her.
This gave Amber even more confidence. "Chloe, I've been very patient with you.
We all know you slept your way through grad school to get those papers published." "For the sake of our old school days, I didn't report you.
And now you have the nerve to fight for this promotion?" "With your lack of ethics, you should have your medical license revoked." The medical students, who had all received favors from Amber, quickly joined in. "She's just a fraud who traded sex for papers.
She only knows how to work in bed." "And she calls herself a research genius?
Pathetic." "If she keeps causing a scene, let's just report her to the board." Amber looked at me triumphantly. She believed that whatever she wanted, she could get.
It had been that way her entire life.
I cleared my throat, completely ignoring her accusations. "Amber, the only thesis that was slept for was yours—right in Marcus's bed." Before I could finish, Marcus’s hand slapped hard across my face.
My head snapped to the side, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. "Watch your mouth! Do you have any proof?" Marcus barked. "How dare you slander Amber!" Proof?
Did they have any proof when they were trashtalking me? The onlookers became even more aggressive. "Amber, let me call the cops.
Let's get Chloe arrested." "She’s literally making up lies in public. This is harassment!" I stood there, waiting for them to call the police. But Amber stopped them. "Forget it.
If we call the police, Chloe's career will be totally over.
With a criminal record, no one will ever hire her." Her words made everyone forget about the police and instead praise her for being "magnanimous." Marcus stood protectively in front of Amber, glaring at me.
It was clear that if I said another word, he would slap me again. Human nature is truly unpredictable.
I had fallen for Marcus because, back in college, when everyone accused me of stealing a roommate's watch, Marcus had stood in front of me to protect me.
Now, he was standing in the exact same protective stance—but for Amber. And he was the one accusing me. Amber patted my cheek mockingly. "Remember this, Chloe.
I got this position fair and square." Fair and square? With the thesis I spent three years researching?
Did they really think I would just sit back and let them trample me again in this life? I smiled lightly. "Fair and square? You mean by using my research paper?"
