Opening · Chapter 1
On our third wedding anniversary, I opened the birthday gift my husband, Julian Vance, gave me. It was a photo album. When I opened it, my heart stopped.
Every single page was filled with explicit photos of him and a younger woman.
When I slammed the album onto his desk and demanded an explanation, Julian just shrugged, completely unfazed. "I sent it to the wrong person.
This was meant for Chloe." He leaned back in his leather chair, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "But since you've found out, I guess there's no point in hiding it anymore." I didn't cry.
I didn't scream. I just looked at him and said, "I want a divorce. And I'm taking Leo with me." He let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Are you trying to threaten me with my own son?
Don't worry, Clara. I won't fight you for custody. Chloe is much younger than you.
We'll have our own children soon enough." He stood up, walking past me without a hint of remorse. "But remember this—if you take Leo and walk out that door, don't expect to get a single penny of my money." When the news broke, my friends all thought I was out of my mind.
I had been married to a billionaire for three years, and now I was leaving with absolutely nothing. But what they didn't know was that Julian had a severe case of asthenozoospermia.
If I hadn't been one of the top reproductive endocrinologists in the country, he would never have had a child in the first place.
He had ten mistresses before and during our marriage. Not a single one of them had ever gotten pregnant. And this pretty little Chloe Miller was not going to be the exception.
Even if we divorced, the sole heir to the multibilliondollar Vance empire would only ever be my son, Leo. Twenty minutes later, the master bedroom door clicked open.
A young girl stepped out, wearing nothing but one of Julian's white buttondown shirts. It was Chloe Miller.
She was Julian's newest toy, a college student sponsored by the Vance Family Foundation.
When she saw me sitting in the living room, she froze for a second, but then quickly lifted her chin defiantly. She posed as if she were already the mistress of this penthouse.
I gave her a polite nod. "Take the back elevator. There are reporters near the lobby." She bit her lip, glared at me, and hurried away.
Julian walked out next, a bath towel loosely tied around his waist. He glanced at Leo sleeping in my arms, then at me.
A playful, arrogant smirk crept onto his face. "Well, you're acting very mature today." I didn't answer. I gently carried Leo back to his crib and tucked him in.
When I walked back out, Julian was lighting a cigarette. "Clara, if you'd always been this compliant, we wouldn't be here," he said, blowing a cloud of smoke that blurred his handsome face.
Suddenly, my mind drifted back to a night four years ago.
He had stood under my apartment building in the pouring rain, soaking wet, holding a bag of takeout from the latenight diner I loved. "Dr.
Bennett," he had smiled, his eyes shining with a sincerity I had never seen again. "I've been chasing you for three months.
Won't you give me a chance?" Julian's harsh voice snapped me back to reality. "You haven't forgotten why we got married, right?" He walked over, his fingers pinching my chin, forcing me to look up. "That night I drank too much and forgot protection.
You got lucky. Pregnant on the first try." He sneered. "The Vance family cares about bloodlines.
Otherwise, with your background—a common doctor—how could you have ever married into old money?" "I know," I said, tilting my head to escape his grip. His eyes went cold.
He pulled his hand back and took another drag of his cigarette. "Good. Keep being a good Mrs. Vance, take care of our son, and I won't treat you badly.
But Clara, don't expect me to be loyal to only one woman." "Understood," I whispered, keeping my eyes down.
Satisfied, he turned to leave. "Oh, by the way, for my father's birthday gala tomorrow, wear that champagne gown." The door shut. I stood in the silence for a long time.
When my legs started to feel numb, I slowly walked back to Leo's crib. Leo rolled over, his little lips pouting as if he were having a sweet dream.
There were so many things Julian didn't know. For instance, I was the doctor who personally handled his premarital health screening.
I had the highest security clearance in the hospital. His semen analysis report had clearly stated: Severe asthenozoospermia.
The probability of natural conception is virtually zero. I had quietly deleted that page.
Back then, I loved him so much that I couldn't bear to let his pride be crushed by his own physical defect.
It was only later, when I consulted my former medical mentor, that I realized I possessed an extremely rare hyperfertile physiology. I was literally one in a million.
Without me, Julian Vance would have been biologically destined to be childless for the rest of his life. During my pregnancy, I gained twenty pounds.
That was when Julian stopped coming home. The first time I smelled foreign perfume on his collar, I confronted him.
He had shoved me away impatiently. "Clara, can you stop being so hysterical?" Then came the lipstick marks, the long hairs on his car seat, and eventually, he started bringing women straight to our home.
I used to cry and scream. Until six months ago, when I caught him in our guest bed with another woman.
Julian had slowly pulled on his pants, grabbed my jaw, and said, "Clara, know your place. You're only in this house because your uterus was useful.
Other than that, you are nothing." In that exact moment, something inside me shattered completely. Since then, I stopped crying. I stopped fighting.
I even started leaving the house whenever he brought someone home. It wasn't because I accepted my fate. It was because I finally understood the rules of the game.
I bent down and gently kissed Leo's forehead. "Don't worry, sweetheart," I whispered, my voice as soft as a sigh. "Everything in the Vance family will belong to us sooner or later."
Opening · Chapter 2
My inlaws' 70th Birthday Gala took over the entire rooftop penthouse of the most expensive hotel in Boston. I wore the champagne gown Julian had demanded.
But the spot next to him—the spot that belonged to his wife—was occupied by Chloe. She walked in wearing the exact white designer gown I had liked but refrained from buying.
All eyes in the ballroom immediately locked onto her. "Julian, sorry I'm late," she purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
Julian leaned down and kissed her cheek. "You're just in time. The star of the night always arrives last." My inlaws frowned slightly but said nothing.
Several of Julian's cousins and uncles exchanged smirks, their eyes filled with mockery and amusement.
I was seated at the very end of the long banquet table, next to some distant relatives who barely knew my name. Halfway through the dinner, Chloe walked over to me, holding a glass.
Her voice was loud enough for the entire table to hear. "Mrs. Vance, could you get me some warm water? I'm not feeling very well." The entire table fell silent.
Julian was cutting his steak, his head never once lifting.
I set my wine glass down. "The waiters are right behind you, Miss Miller." Her smile stiffened for a fraction of a second before she recovered. "But I really want you to get it for me." I replied calmly, "If you want it that badly, you can ask your boyfriend to get it for you." A few suppressed giggles erupted from the nearby seats.
Chloe's eyes immediately welled up with tears. "Julian..." she whimpered, looking toward the head of the table. Julian finally stood up.
His eyes locked onto me, cold and threatening. "Clara, it's just a cup of water.
Why are you being so petty?" Looking into his lifeless, arrogant eyes, I stood up, poured a glass of warm water, and slid it across the table. Chloe didn't catch it.
It spilled slightly, and her tears started streaming down. "Julian, I just wanted to be close to her..." Julian's face darkened completely. "Apologize to her, Clara." The entire ballroom went dead silent.
My motherinlaw turned her head away. My fatherinlaw sighed in disappointment. I stood there, surrounded by stares of pity, mockery, and sheer contempt.
I remembered last year's gala, in this very room, when Julian had held my hand and proudly announced to everyone, "This is my wife, Clara." Back then, there was pride in his eyes.
Even if it was just a little. "I'm sorry," I said, my voice steady. "I shouldn't have told you to call the waiter." The banquet ended in disaster.
Late that night, Julian stumbled into our penthouse, smelling of scotch. He slammed a folder onto the table. He lit a cigarette. "Chloe wants a real home.
She's a young girl, and she's had a hard life. Sign the papers." I looked at the divorce agreement. I remembered the night he proposed to me.
He had filled my apartment courtyard with red roses, his hands shaking as he held the ring. "Clara, marry me.
I'll make you the happiest woman in the world." Once, his eyes held true sincerity. Even if it was only for a moment. "I want full custody of Leo," I said.
Julian laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "You can't afford him." I stood up, looking straight into his eyes. "Then I'll see you in court." Julian's smile vanished.
He stared at me, his eyes flickering with a mixture of anger and disbelief, before finally settling into a sneer. "Fine. If you want to humiliate yourself, go ahead.
You can't beat me, Clara. You're just a doctor. How are you going to fight the Vance family's legal team?" The door slammed shut.
Outside, the rain began to pour, drumming aggressively against the glass. In the courtyard below, the roses Julian had planted himself were being torn apart by the storm.
I walked back to Leo's room and kissed his cheek. "Sweetheart," I whispered. "Mommy is not going to lose." From the hallway, I heard the sound of glass shattering in Julian's study.
The war had officially begun.
Opening · Chapter 3
The news that I was suing Julian Vance for sole custody of our son spread through Boston's high society overnight. "She's not asking for a single cent of his billions?
Is she insane?" "It's a psychological play. Women like her always play hard to get." Even my best friend, Serena, rushed over from New York to yell at me. "Clara!
Has your brain melted? Julian is the one who cheated!
You should be taking him for every penny he has!" She grabbed my shoulders, her eyes red with worry. "Do you know how expensive a custody battle is?
Do you know how much it costs to raise a child in this city?!" Looking into her worried eyes, a wave of warmth rushed through me.
At least someone in this world truly cared about me. I gently pat her hand. "Serena, I have a plan.
Trust me." On the day of the first court hearing, Julian's highpowered legal team submitted a mountain of evidence.
They argued that as a surgeon, my irregular hours meant I couldn't provide a stable environment for Leo.
They showed that I only owned a small premarital apartment and had less than a hundred thousand dollars in savings, while Julian's net worth was in the billions.
They even dug up my medical records from college, showing that I had seen a therapist for three months due to academic stress. The judge looked at me with deep pity.
Julian sat at the defense table in a bespoke suit, looking completely relaxed. His occasional glances toward me were filled with pure disdain.
During the recess, I bumped into Julian and Chloe in the hallway. Chloe gave me a sugary, venomous smile. "Dr. Bennett, I heard you're still fighting for Leo? Why bother?
A single mom's life is so hard." "Miss Miller, you aren't even married into the family yet.
Isn't it a bit early to worry about my son?" I bypassed her and looked straight at Julian. "I want Leo." He sneered. "You can't afford him!
His annual preschool tuition is more than your yearly salary!" "That is my problem." He stared at me for a long time before letting out a cold laugh. "We'll see about that in court." Before the second hearing, my lawyer's face was incredibly grim. "Clara, they found a malpractice claim from three years ago." I froze. "That patient arrived in the ER already braindead.
I did everything by the book. The medical board cleared me of all liability." My lawyer sighed. "The Vance family has unlimited resources.
They paid off the patient's disgruntled family to testify in court that you are incompetent and irresponsible." My hands began to tremble.
Not out of fear, but out of absolute disgust. Julian really wanted to destroy me. He didn't just want to win; he wanted to ruin my entire life.
During the final hearing, I stood up before the judge. "Your Honor, I waive all claims to the marital assets. I am not asking for any spousal support or child support.
I only want sole custody of my son." The courtroom gasped. Julian's eyes widened in shock. Chloe's smug smile vanished, replaced by utter confusion.
She probably couldn't comprehend why anyone would willingly walk away from the Vance fortune.
The judge, seeing my determination and Julian's obvious moral shortcomings, ultimately granted me sole physical custody, giving Julian only basic visitation rights.
As we walked out of the courthouse, Chloe tried to mock me one last time. "Dr. Bennett, have fun working extra shifts.
Call us if you need food stamps." Julian said nothing, just staring at me with a complicated expression. Serena drove us away in her beatup SUV.
In the back seat, Leo was happily playing with his toy car. "Mommy, where are we going?" "We're going home, baby," I smiled, kissing his head.
In the rearview mirror, Julian's black RollsRoyce grew smaller and smaller until it disappeared.
Serena wiped a tear from her cheek as she drove. "Clara, you really left with nothing? You didn't even pack your designer bags...
Just one of those purses could pay your rent for a year..." I looked down at my small suitcase containing only a few clothes and my medical license. "This is more than enough," I said softly.
I looked out the window. "Serena, sometimes you have to let go of everything to get what you truly want." Serena sniffed. "I just hope you don't regret this." I wouldn't.
Because what I took with me was the only biological heir to the entire Vance empire.
Opening · Chapter 4
Two years can change a lot of things. Leo and I settled into a cozy twobedroom apartment. Every morning, I dropped him off at preschool before heading to the hospital.
In the evenings, I cooked, played with him, and tucked him into bed. Life was busy, but peaceful. Julian and Chloe got married three months after our divorce.
The wedding was a massive social media event. Instagram was flooded with pictures of Chloe in a milliondollar custom gown and Julian holding her waist with a gentle smile.
A smile I hadn't seen in years. After the wedding, Chloe was desperate to get pregnant. She knew that only a baby could secure her position as the true Mrs.
Vance and completely erase me, the "exwife." She posted daily updates of her prenatal vitamins on Snapchat with captions like: Waiting for our little miracle!
I just smiled and swiped past them. A year passed, and Chloe's belly remained completely flat. The Vance family began to grow anxious.
My former motherinlaw was dropping hints constantly, and Julian even stopped drinking and smoking to prepare for conception. Another year passed. Still nothing.
Chloe started visiting the most expensive private fertility clinics in the city. Every single test showed she was perfectly healthy. And yet, she couldn't get pregnant.
Julian's impatience was reaching a boiling point. He was the only son of his generation.
But what drove the family truly crazy was that none of Julian's secret mistresses on the side were getting pregnant either.
Whispers and rumors began to spread through the elite circles of Boston like wildfire. At first, Julian dismissed the rumors.
He had physically witnessed Leo's birth and ordered a DNA test immediately after, which confirmed 100% paternity. How could he possibly have a fertility issue?
But at a family dinner, his uncles and cousins looked at him with increasingly mocking eyes.
That night, old Arthur Vance called Julian into his study. "Julian, the Vance family cannot rely on just one child. Go get yourself checked.
Silence those gossiping bastards once and for all." I was making breakfast for Leo when my phone rang. "Dr.
Bennett, we have a highprofile client in the executive health suite who specifically requested you. It's Julian Vance." I turned off the stove. "Understood.
I'll be there in thirty minutes." When I arrived at the clinic, Julian was already waiting in my office.
He sat rigidly in the chair opposite mine, trying desperately to maintain his usual arrogant posture. "I need a complete male fertility panel.
The most detailed one you have," he said, his voice unusually raspy. I nodded, opening my laptop. "Do you want to rush the results?" "Yes. Rush it." The tests took the entire day.
I personally supervised every single procedure. When the lab tech handed over the samples, she whispered to me, "Dr. Bennett, isn't this your..." "My exhusband," I replied calmly.
Three days later, the report was ready. When I walked back into my office with the sealed envelope, Julian was already sitting there.
He had dark circles under his eyes. "What are the results?" he asked directly, though his fingers were twitching nervously on his knees. I didn't answer immediately.
I simply placed the manila folder on the desk and slid it over to him. "See for yourself."
