Opening · Chapter 1
Charlotte and I are sisters.
The difference is, she is the proud, legitimate heiress of the Sinclair family, while I am just the dirty little secret—the illegitimate daughter my father had with the housekeeper.
When the ultrawealthy Sterling family came looking for a merger marriage, they specifically asked for me. But Charlotte couldn't stand seeing me get something good.
She threw a tantrum, forced our mother to switch the brides, and stole my fiancé. Because of that, I was forced to marry Marcus Vance, a greasy car mechanic.
But nobody expected Marcus to strike it rich and build a techauto empire. Overnight, I became the envied wife of a billionaire CEO. Now, we have both been reborn.
The moment we opened our eyes in this life, Charlotte screamed that she wanted to marry the mechanic. I almost laughed out loud.
She has no idea what kind of monster Marcus is behind closed doors. I am more than happy to watch her step into hell, one single step at a time.
Ethan Sterling wanted to marry into the Sinclair family to secure a strategic alliance.
During dinner, Eleanor, our mother, brought it up. "The Sterlings want to form an alliance with us, and they specifically asked for Chloe.
But the Vance family also came by recently, demanding we fulfill your late father's promise.
I think it’s best if Charlotte marries into the Sterling family, and Chloe marries Marcus Vance." Eleanor spoke so casually, stripping away my future with a single sentence. "No, Mom!
I’ll marry Marcus!" Hearing this, Charlotte gasped first, glared at me like I was about to steal her treasure, and immediately shouted her answer.
She was terrified I would beat her to it. "If there are no objections, then I will negotiate with the Sterlings...
Wait, what did you just say?!" Eleanor stared at Charlotte, completely dumbfounded. She had already rehearsed a whole speech to guilttrip me into marrying the mechanic.
She never expected her own precious daughter to jump at the chance. The marriage with the Vance family was a debt of honor left by our late father.
Before he died, our father got into a horrific car accident. Marcus’s father happened to pass by and dragged him out of the burning car.
Though my father passed away shortly after anyway, he left a written promise in his will: one of his daughters would marry into the Vance family to help them rise in society. "Charlotte, stop fooling around!" Eleanor hissed. "Marcus Vance is just a grease monkey in a dirty repair shop!
How could he possibly be worthy of a Sinclair? The Vances are peasants. Sending our illegitimate daughter to them is already generous enough.
You are my perfect heiress, how can you marry him?!" "Mom, you’ve always spoiled me and ignored Chloe," Charlotte said, pretending to sound angelic. "I’ve always felt guilty about it.
Besides, the Sterlings specifically asked for Chloe. If we force a switch, the Sterlings might get angry and ruin the business deal. Let Chloe have the billionaire.
I’ll gladly marry Marcus!" Eleanor flatout refused at first. But Charlotte went on a hunger strike. She refused to eat a single bite until Eleanor gave in.
She was dead set on marrying Marcus. Meanwhile, the Sterlings were pushing for a wedding date.
Left with no choice, Eleanor finally agreed. "My poor baby," Eleanor said, squeezing Charlotte’s hand with tears in her eyes. "You’re going to suffer so much marrying that mechanic." "Don't worry, Mom," Charlotte smiled, her eyes gleaming with greed. "Marcus is going to achieve great things.
I know it." Then, she turned her head and looked at me. "Congratulations, Chloe. You’re going to be Mrs. Sterling.
I’m happy for you." I looked at her smug face and realized: she had been reborn, too.
In our past life, she had eagerly followed Eleanor’s lead, pushing the "charity marriage" with the mechanic onto me.
Now, she was grinning, thinking she had stolen my golden ticket to wealth and fame. She had no idea she was diving headfirst into a filthy, abusive hellhole.
Opening · Chapter 2
Though Charlotte and I are both Sinclairs, Charlotte was treated like a princess. I, on the other hand, was just a mistake my father made after drinking too much with the maid.
Charlotte never missed a chance to mock my status, and my father had viewed me as a stain on his reputation.
He only brought me into the house to keep the tabloids from calling him heartless.
In our past life, Charlotte was jealous of the Sterlings' wealth, but she looked down on Marcus for being a mechanic. Greed won, and she happily married Ethan Sterling.
Later, Marcus started his own autotech company. He grew it into a Fortune 500 giant, even threatening to overshadow the Sterlings.
As Marcus's wife, I became the most envied woman in high society. Everyone kissed my feet. But in reality, I lived every day walking on eggshells, terrified for my life.
Right when Marcus's company was about to go public, his products were flagged for a major safety violation.
In a state of pure panic, a corrupt business partner gave him an idea—and Marcus turned his eyes to me. I am beautiful.
Even though my mother was a housekeeper, I inherited a face that could turn heads anywhere. Suddenly, Marcus started dragging me to every business party.
Big galas, small private gatherings—he insisted I accompany him. And all these gatherings had one thing in common: the presence of Mr.
Harrison, a disgustingly fat, greasy old billionaire. Finally, at a private club afterparty, Marcus leaned close and whispered in my ear, "Chloe, just help me out this once. If Mr.
Harrison backs us, we’ll be set for life. You’ll have all the luxury you want." I nodded, pretending to agree. Seconds later, Marcus excused himself to go to the restroom.
He never came back that night. From that day on, Mr. Harrison treated me with weird respect and poured millions into Marcus’s company.
The IPO went flawlessly, and Marcus's status skyrocketed. Marcus became so powerful that clients constantly tried to send beautiful women to his bed.
But Marcus always turned them down. He built a massive reputation in the city as a "devoted, loyal husband." Everyone talked about our perfect marriage.
And every time Charlotte heard about it, she would stare at me with pure, venomous hatred, as if she wanted to tear me apart. I could only laugh bitterly inside.
Marcus didn't love me. He was only keeping me close to make sure I kept his darkest secret.
A secret that, if exposed, would ruin us both, destroy our reputation, and land us in a place worse than death.
Opening · Chapter 3
Because Marcus was eager, his wedding with Charlotte was set first. My wedding with Ethan was scheduled for a few months later.
Charlotte was happily picking out custom designer gowns and diamond rings until Marcus showed up at our house, bluntly stating his family was too poor to afford a proper wedding.
Charlotte lost her mind. She threw a tantrum and smashed her custom jewelry and perfume bottles all over the floor. In the end, Eleanor couldn't stand seeing her daughter cry.
She stepped in and offered to pay for the entire wedding out of the Sinclair pocket. Marcus didn't have to spend a dime, which finally calmed Charlotte down.
In my past life, Marcus had used the exact same excuse. But back then, Eleanor had pretended to be deaf. She told us a married couple should stand on their own feet.
Marcus had simply told me to "suck it up" and promised he would make it up to me when we were rich. On my wedding day in that past life, there was no ceremony, no white dress.
I just packed my bags and took an Uber to Marcus’s rundown apartment while high society laughed at me.
But in this life, I was marrying Ethan Sterling, the sole heir of the Sterling empire. The Sterling family spared no expense.
The wedding was grand, lavish, and became the social event of the year. Though Eleanor had paid for Charlotte’s wedding, it was nothing compared to the scale of mine.
Charlotte’s face was practically twisted with rage when she arrived. Even standing on the stage, I could feel her venomous glare cutting through the crowd.
But then she probably reminded herself of the "billionaire future" she stole, and managed to force a smile.
When we toasted, she leaned in and whispered: "I heard the Sterling heir has a weak heart and might not live long.
You better get ready to be a young widow, Chloe." In my past life, Ethan Sterling had indeed vanished during a business trip.
The Sterlings spent millions searching for him but found nothing. Eventually, he was declared dead. During the search, the Sterling company was hit with a massive scandal.
They were accused of distributing laced pharmaceuticals and bribing government officials. The Sterling empire crumbled into bankruptcy.
Charlotte, desperate to find a new sugar daddy, jumped into bed with a young heir named Leo Bennett. But during a wild party, Ethan’s grandmother caught them redhanded.
The shock nearly killed the old lady. With her last breath, the grandmother kicked Charlotte out of the house, turning her into the biggest laughingstock of the city.
I kept my smile polite and replied softly, "You should worry about yourself, Charlotte. I hope you and Marcus stay happy together.
Forever." Seeing that I wasn't bothered at all, her elegant mask cracked. She clenched her jaw and hissed, "Oh, we will." Seeing Charlotte lose her temper made me feel a bit better.
As Ethan and I continued to greet the guests, I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine. Even with dozens of people between us, the intensity of that gaze didn't fade.
I looked over and saw Marcus sitting at his table. He seemed busy chatting up some corporate executives and wasn't looking my way.
But I was absolutely sure—that snakelike, toxic glare had belonged to him.
Opening · Chapter 4
Our wedding started at noon and didn't end until late at night. For a family like the Sterlings, a wedding wasn't just a ceremony; it was a massive networking event. As the new Mrs.
Sterling, I couldn't show any weakness, so I barely ate a thing all day. Ethan had to stay behind to handle some latenight VIPs, so I went back to his private estate alone to rest.
My stomach was growling. I changed into comfy loungewear and went downstairs to the kitchen, but the pantry was mostly empty.
There was only half a pack of dry pasta and some basic ingredients. Though I was neglected in the Sinclair house, they never actually starved me just to keep up appearances.
Only a few times, when Eleanor "accidentally" forgot to bring me to galas and "accidentally" forgot to leave food, did I try to cook. The results had been disastrous.
Looking at the dry pasta, I sighed, pulled out my phone, and searched for a basic tutorial.
When Ethan walked through the front door, the house was dark except for the warm light spilling from the kitchen.
He walked over, looking curious. "Boil the water, throw in the pasta, then add a pinch of salt..." I was staring intently at my phone, trying to follow the steps.
I was so focused on not ruining my only meal that I didn't hear him approach. "Are you cooking pasta? Can I have a bowl too?" The sudden male voice startled me.
My hand shook, and a drop of water hit the hot oil nearby, causing it to splatter.
Before I could react, Ethan grabbed my waist and pulled me flush against his chest, shielding me from the hot grease.
Inhaling the faint scent of expensive cologne and alcohol on him, I froze. My body went completely stiff.
I forgot all about the food until the smell of burning garlic filled the air. "Oh no!" I gently pushed him away, only to find my precious dinner was completely charred. "Well, looks like I missed my chance," Ethan joked, leaning against the counter with a smirk. "It's my fault.
I forgot you hadn't eaten all day.
To make it up to you, let me cook." "But we don't have any more pa—" "Hmm?" Ethan reached into the top cabinet and pulled out a fresh, unopened pack of organic pasta.
I felt my face turn bright red. A wave of sheer embarrassment washed over me. "It's okay. It’s your first day here.
It’s normal not to know where things are," Ethan said softly, trying to soothe my embarrassment, though the amusement in his eyes didn't fade.
He looked like a perfect, caring gentleman, but somehow, that made me feel even more embarrassed! A moment later, he couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle. I knew it!
My gut was right! He was totally laughing at me! Pouting, I grabbed my phone, turned around, and sat at the dining table, pretending to ignore him.
Ethan watched my annoyed expression, the smile on his face growing wider. Soon, the kitchen filled with the delicious aroma of boiling sauce. I couldn't help but peek over my phone.
It was ironic. I, the neglected daughter of a housekeeper, couldn't cook to save my life.
Yet Ethan Sterling, the pampered heir to a multibilliondollar empire, was incredibly skilled and efficient in the kitchen.
Maybe it was the warmth of the kitchen, or maybe I was just exhausted from the long day, but as I watched his back, my eyelids grew heavy, and I drifted off to sleep.
I don't know how much time passed before I felt a gentle tap on my forehead. I opened my eyes to see Ethan placing two steaming bowls of pasta on the table.
I rubbed my forehead, glaring at him. "You..." "Sorry," he said, not looking sorry at all. "You looked so cute sleeping, I couldn't resist waking you up like that." His words blocked any complaint I had.
He was smiling so warmly, but why did I feel like he had a hidden, mischievous streak?
Deciding to ignore his teasing, I picked up my fork and dug into the pasta. "I actually thought I’d be marrying Charlotte," he suddenly said, breaking the silence.
I kept my face neutral, but my heart skipped a beat. Could he be reborn too? "Charlotte wanted to do something nice for me for once, so she let me marry you.
Besides, aren't I the one the Sterlings wanted?" I replied innocently. Until I was sure, I couldn't risk revealing anything. Ethan looked at me deeply, his dark eyes unreadable.
He didn't push further, only murmuring, "Yes. You are the only one I wanted to marry." His voice was so quiet I barely caught it. He didn't say anything else, and I didn't ask.
We finished our meal in comfortable silence. Ethan finished first. He put down his fork and just sat there, quietly watching me eat. I couldn't describe his gaze at the time.
Was it scrutiny? Or was he studying me? It was only much later that I realized it was the look of a man who had finally regained his most precious, longlost treasure.
I finished my pasta, trying to act calm. "I’ll clean up," I offered. "You should go rest." "No need. Leave them. Mrs.
Hudson will clean them when she comes in tomorrow morning." "I was waiting for you." I looked up, meeting his intense gaze.
His dark eyes made it impossible to read his thoughts, yet he seemed to see right through me. He walked over, lifted me effortlessly into his arms, and carried me upstairs.
I gasped, startled by the sudden movement.
Surrounded by his scent, I felt a little breathless. "What are you doing?" I asked as he laid me gently onto the kingsized bed in his master bedroom.
He let out a low, husky laugh, clearly amused by my act of playing dumb. "It's our wedding night, Chloe." Before I could say another word, his lips met mine, stealing my breath away.
It was a long, breathless night of passion.
