Opening · Chapter 1

On the day Ethan Vance lost his memory in a car accident, we had just picked out a name for our baby.

He threw away every single memory of me, along with the photos of the nursery, straight into the trash.

The only person he remembered was Chloe, his exwife whom he once claimed to hate.

No matter how much I and our friends tried to explain, he believed I was the homewrecker who ruined their relationship.

But despite how much Ethan despised me, I refused to sign the divorce papers. Because the doctor said there was still a chance he could recover his memory.

That was until Ethan brought Chloe right into our home and had sex with her on our living room sofa, right in front of my eyes. Only then did I realize it was time to let go.

I walked home from the law firm. The moment I pushed the door open, the sound of Ethan and Chloe giggling drifted from inside. I looked around. The place was a total disaster.

Clothes were scattered everywhere, and the carpet was filthy... On the living room TV, the news was playing a rerun of today's drama at my law firm.

Seeing me back, the smile on Ethan's face faded. "You actually have the nerve to show your face here," he sneered. Chloe giggled and kissed the corner of his mouth. "Come on, Ethan.

You guys were together for seven years. Let her keep some dignity." Then, she looked up, arched an eyebrow at me, and gave a smug smile. "Ethan missed me so much, so I came over.

You don't mind, do you?" Rainwater dripped from my hair onto the floor. An overwhelming exhaustion washed over me.

Without looking at the two halfnaked people on the sofa, I turned and walked toward the bedroom.

But when I pushed the door open, I froze. "Oh, I forgot to tell you." "This house is under my mother's estate. It has nothing to do with you.

I threw all your stuff out." "They're probably sitting in the trash bins down the street by now." Ethan smirked, leaning against the wall, watching me.

It seemed seeing me humiliated was the only thing that made him happy. A sharp pain pierced my heart.

My soaked shirt made me shiver. "You bought today's trending search on SnapChat, didn't you?" "We were already divorced.

Why did you have to ruin my career too?" At my accusation, Ethan kicked over the cardboard box in my hands. All my files and documents scattered across the floor.

That was seven years of my hard work. "You've been clinging to me for three years. Isn't that enough?

Even if I did have a past with you, I've lost my memory." "The fact that I forgot you proves you mean absolutely nothing to me!" His words ripped open my wounds yet again.

Three years ago, he suddenly lost his memory, forgetting everything about me.

Just the day before the accident, he had excitedly dragged me to decorate the nursery, wondering if we were having a boy or a girl. But then he forgot.

He only remembered Chloe. "You only forgot! You have no idea what Chloe did to you back then..." Frustration and anger drove me to the brink of madness. Ethan’s face turned icy.

He grabbed my wrist tightly. And shoved me out the door. The heavy rain drenched me instantly. "I don't care what Chloe did.

I only know I love her, and that's enough." I opened my mouth, but all the anger and questions suddenly felt pointless. Irritated, Ethan avoided my gaze.

He reached down and yanked the wedding band off his finger. The edge of the diamond ring cut his skin, leaving a scratch. He threw the ring at my feet.

Before slamming the door in my face, he spat out: "Don't come begging me to get back together. It's pathetic." I stood there for a long time.

Finally, I knelt down and picked up the ring. Ethan had designed it himself before we got married. He had worn it for seven years and never once taken it off.

By the trash can down the street lay our shattered wedding photos and the scarf he had handknitted for me. And every single album of our memories. Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

I saw the caller ID and picked up. His mother's excited voice came through the line. "Clara! I just got Ethan's medical report.

The doctor says his memory block is softening!" "With continued treatment, there’s an eighty percent chance he’ll remember everything!" My knuckles turned white as I gripped the phone.

The word "okay" died in my throat. Finally, I spoke softly. "Eleanor... don't bother. If he forgot, let him forget."

Opening · Chapter 2

The next day, I went to the Vance family estate.

I laid the eight sets of signed divorce decrees on the table in front of Eleanor. "Eleanor, Ethan and I are divorced again." Eleanor looked at me with deep pity and let out a long sigh. "Ethan has failed you.

You two were so happy before." "But this time is different.

I've contacted several specialists, and they all say the chances of recovery are high." She slid a doctor's business card toward me, her eyes filled with hope. "I'm getting old, Clara.

I just want you two to have a good life together." "He's actually been remembering a lot of things lately..." Before she could finish, I cut her off. "But he has never remembered a single thing about me." I lowered my head, avoiding her pitying gaze.

Silence fell over the room until she spoke again. "If you leave, and Ethan finally remembers you only to find you gone... he'll go crazy." For the past three years, every time we divorced, Eleanor would say this.

And because of this sentence, my heart would soften again and again. We would remarry, over and over. Before I could reply, there was a sound at the front door. Ethan walked in.

The moment he saw me, his forehead creased in irritation. "Clara? Are you here to complain to my mother again?" "I already kicked you out, yet you're still hovering like a ghost.

Can you literally not survive without me?" Eleanor’s chest heaved with rage. She stood up abruptly.

She raised her hand and slapped Ethan hard across the face. "Have you lost your mind?

How much more are you going to push Clara?" "Without her, you would have died years ago!" I sat on the sofa, squeezing my hands into fists. My mind drifted back to seven years ago.

His marriage with Chloe had been a living hell. He gave her all his love, but she was already sleeping with other men.

Betrayed, Ethan became the laughingstock of high society overnight. When he went to confront her, Chloe stole ten million dollars from his account and vanished without a trace.

After that, Ethan fell into a deep depression. He was about to jump off a bridge and end his life. I was the one who pulled him back. "So what?

She just wants money anyway," Ethan said, still stubbornly staring at his mother. "I don't care what Chloe did in the past. I love her.

I can't love anyone else." "And I won't regret it." It felt as if all the strength was instantly drained from Eleanor. She turned to look at me, her eyes full of apology.

Ethan rubbed his temples and finally tilted his head back, looking dismissive. "Clara, if you want to remarry, fine. We'll just end up divorcing again anyway.

You'll be the one embarrassed, not me." "Since you can't live without me, let's go to the courthouse right now." "This would be your eighth time, right?" I curled my lips into a bitter smile.

I couldn't connect this man with the Ethan in my memories anymore. "I came today to make things clear with Eleanor." "You're free, Ethan." Ethan froze.

His hand hanging by his side twitched slightly. He stared at me in disbelief, but quickly recovered his arrogant smirk. "Playing hard to get? Too bad it doesn't work on me." "Fine.

You said it. Don't come crawling back to me." He practically spat the words through gritted teeth.

Ignoring his mother's protests, he threw his car keys on the table and stormed out. Eleanor felt dizzy with anger, shouting at his retreating back: "You will regret this!"

Opening · Chapter 3

Whether Ethan would regret it or not didn't matter to me anymore. Once I gave up on his treatment, my tensed nerves finally relaxed.

After leaving the Vance estate, I planned to ask Ethan to return my passport and ID cards. Over the past few years, he had kept all my personal documents.

But just as I reached the street corner, a sudden, sharp pain hit my forehead. Warm, thick blood began to gush from the wound. Dizziness washed over me.

Before I could realize what was happening, a crowd surrounded me, grabbing and kicking me. "It's her! She's the homewrecker!" "Mr. Vance and Chloe belong together!

She's just a desperate side chick!" "Ugh, she's a disgrace to the legal community!

She handles other people's divorces but can't even manage her own messy life!" The commotion immediately drew onlookers.

Instead of helping, they pulled out their phones and started filming me. Due to the heavy blood loss, I had no strength to fight back.

Seeing that I couldn't resist, the crowd slowly dispersed, looking bored.

One of them spat on the ground near me. "We'll beat you up every time we see you!" Through my blurry vision, I saw Ethan in the distance.

He was holding hands with Chloe, smiling happily. They looked perfect together. When our eyes met, Ethan stiffened.

He instinctively took a step toward me. "What... what happened to you?" The blood wouldn't stop flowing, staining my clothes bright red. Ethan’s mind went blank.

He seemed panicked, his hands shaking as he pulled out his phone to call 911. But Chloe grabbed his arm. "Leave her alone, Ethan.

What if she staged this just to get your sympathy?" "It looks scary, but she'll be fine." "Didn't you promise to take me shopping for my birthday gift?" Chloe pulled him away.

After a moment of hesitation, Ethan turned off his phone. He didn't look back at me. I leaned against the wall, gasping for air as the blood kept pouring.

In the end, I had to dial 911 myself. Before the ambulance could arrive, I blacked out completely. When I woke up, a week had passed.

The doctor said if I had arrived any later, I would have died from blood loss. Eleanor rushed to the hospital when she heard the news.

She paid for all my medical expenses. "Clara, those people went too far.

I've already handled the legal side of it." "But Ethan..." "He just forgot that you have a blood clotting disorder." Eleanor tried to defend him, but looking at my pale face, the words died in her throat.

I gave her a faint smile. "Eleanor, we are divorced.

And I won't stay in New York City anymore." "I'm never coming back." Hearing me call her "Eleanor" instead of "Mom," her eyes welled with tears.

Finally, she nodded. "Whatever you want to do, Clara. I'll help you."

Opening · Chapter 4

Over the next month, I tried to contact Ethan. After all, he still had my documents. But he was so busy planning Chloe's birthday party that he couldn't care less about me.

It wasn't until the day before Chloe's birthday that he finally showed up. He seemed to have completely forgotten what happened a week ago. "Tomorrow is Chloe's birthday.

She loves excitement and wants you to join us for a track race." I paused. Chloe used to be a professional race car driver before she retired.

Inviting me was obviously her way of showing off. "I'm not going," I said calmly. Ethan seemed prepared.

He pulled my passport and ID out of his pocket and waved them in front of me. "Weren't you looking for these?

Behave, and I'll give them back to you." "Otherwise..." My expression darkened. I knew Ethan would keep his word. So, I agreed.

The crowd Chloe invited were mostly wealthy, spoiled heirs. The moment they saw me, they looked at me like a zoo animal.

They laughed and mocked me openly. "Ethan, why is your ex still clinging to you?

She actually followed you here." Before Ethan could speak, Chloe wrapped her arm around his, smiling sweetly. "I invited Clara! The more, the merrier. Plus, she knows how to drive.

I thought we could all have a friendly race." Their cruel whispers filled my ears. "She's just a disbarred lawyer.

Racing her is beneath us." "Can't believe the 'eighttime divorcee' is actually real." I sighed inwardly. Thinking of my passport, I closed my eyes. "How do you want to do this?

Just say it." Chloe smirked and slid into the driver's seat of her sports car. "Simple.

First to cross the finish line wins." "But hey, if anything happens and someone loses their life... they can only blame their own bad luck." She whispered the last sentence.

My heart skipped a beat, and I instinctively gripped the steering wheel. The race started smoothly. But halfway through a sharp turn, Chloe's car suddenly skidded.

My brakes failed to react in time, and I crashed straight into her. My car flipped over. Screams and cries for help erupted around us.

My legs were pinned under the dashboard, and shattered glass sliced deep into my thigh. I couldn't tell if an artery had been severed. Blood was gushing out rapidly.

The track's emergency medical team quickly pulled us out and rushed us to the hospital.

The doctors had just barely managed to stop my bleeding when Ethan stormed into my room, his eyes bloodshot.

He slapped me hard across the face, grabbing my collar violently. "Clara! You did that on purpose, didn't you?! Chloe is still in the emergency room!

If anything happens to her, I will make you pay!" But she was the one who swerved into me. My vision was blurry.

I saw a doctor walk out of the operating room. "The patient is hemorrhaging. We need a blood transfusion immediately, but our blood bank is running low..." "Take hers!

Use her blood! Please, you have to save my wife!" Ethan grabbed my arm roughly. The sheer force reopened my wounds, and blood began to seep through the bandages.

My doctor tried to stop him. "She can't! She has a severe blood clotting disorder!

She almost severed her artery and we just stopped the bleeding." "If you draw her blood now, she could die!" But Ethan was deaf to any warnings.

He screamed frantically: "I don't care! Draw it! What does her life have to do with me?

I only need Chloe to live!" I looked up at Ethan's back. "Clara, I only want you to live." In my dazed state, I seemed to hear Ethan's voice from the past.

Because of my clotting disorder, Ethan used to treat me like a fragile porcelain doll. Once, we were caught in a landslide while hiking.

He had held me tight and told me the exact same thing. As long as I lived, nothing else mattered. But now, a frenzied Ethan ignored the doctors and forced them to draw my blood.

Bag after bag of my blood was rushed into the operating room. Ethan threw my passport and documents onto my bed. I forced myself to stay conscious.

Ignoring the nurse's pleas for me to stay, I took my passport and walked out of the hospital. This time, Ethan and I were completely settled.
