Opening · Chapter 1
My bestie stole my online boyfriend, who was supposedly a rich heir.
They even posted my picture on the game forum, mocking me for being ugly, poor, and short, saying I didn't deserve to play the game.
At the game's offline fan meet, she and her boyfriend stood on the stage, enjoying everyone's praise.
Wearing a brandname knockoff, she linked her arm with his and swaggered over to gloat in my face.
I spun around, sat down in the board director's exclusive chair, and sneered at her stupidity. "Haven't you realized yet?
The guy next to you is actually a professional parasite who fishes for rich girls in games." Right now, the game forum was absolutely blowing up. The reason?
My "rich heir" online boyfriend and I had just broken up. He had hooked up with my bestie, Hailey, and immediately went public with their relationship right after dumping me.
To make matters worse, they teamed up to post a picture on the forum, claiming it was me, and dragged me for being ugly, poor, and short.
They said a loser like me didn't deserve to play the game. I clicked on the photo. It was a completely random girl I had never seen before.
Hailey had just grabbed a random picture from the internet and insisted it was me.
It was enough to get a mob of mindless internet trolls to cyberbully me. "Honestly, I'm shocked Dusty put up with such an ugly girl for so long.
I would've dumped her way sooner." "Even if Luna is ugly, she’s still the number one player on the server leaderboards. Maybe Dusty just admired her skills at first?
Still, exposing a girl's photo like this is a bit low, isn't it?" "Come on, Dusty is a rich heir. He has class.
Luna must have done something terrible to cross his line for him to snap like this." Luna was my ingame username.
Well, they got one thing right, though it was actually the exact opposite. Dusty's real name was Dustin. It was me who tolerated his skills, not the other way around.
It all started three months ago. I joined a random dungeon raid, and Dustin happened to be in the party. During the fight, I realized our synergy and coordination were toptier.
But that was it. I didn't have any romantic thoughts. To my surprise, after the raid, he sent me a private message.
He asked to partner up so we could take the number one spot on the server's Couple Leaderboard. That was the only reason I agreed to link our accounts as an ingame couple.
Outside of the game, we barely spoke. Soon after, I successfully claimed the number one spot on both the Individual Leaderboard and the Couple Leaderboard.
Dustin was right behind me at number two. To stay at number one, you had to either grind dungeons endlessly or spend insane amounts of money on microtransactions.
I didn't just pay for my own account; I paid for Dustin's, too. Thinking back, Dustin only started getting really affectionate after I began buying him stuff.
Between the gifts I willingly bought and the things he subtly hinted for, I had spent at least a hundred and fifty thousand dollars on his account.
I had told him multiple times that we were just an ingame couple and nothing more. But Dustin ignored me.
He acted like my actual boyfriend, sending me "good morning" and "good night" texts every single day.
Later, I found out that whenever I went offline, Dustin would equip the limitededition skins I bought him to flirt with other girls in the game.
Because he was handsome in his profile pictures, he was pretty popular on the forum.
Combined with the rare skins that only top spenders could afford, everyone assumed he was a wealthy playboy.
During that time, I was busy preparing for my college entrance exams, so I didn't pay much attention. But that didn't mean I didn't care. Dustin completely ignored my boundary.
He never once mentioned to his fans that I was the one who bought him those skins. I only tolerated him because his gaming skills were decent.
But nobody expected things to escalate to this point. Now, he was finally showing his true colors.
Opening · Chapter 2
I quickly typed out a reply on the forum: "The girl in the photo isn't me." As soon as I hit send, someone replied. "Wasn't it your bestie, Harper, who leaked the photo?
Stop struggling. It's okay to be ugly." Harper was Hailey's username. She was my socalled bestie. I had always wondered how she and Dustin ended up together.
But Dustin was a professional manipulator. Could Hailey have been scammed by him? Thinking of this, I suddenly snapped out of it. Why was I worrying about her getting scammed?
Tomorrow was my exam. She chose to announce her relationship with Dustin and direct an online mob at me the night before my exams.
Her goal was obvious: she wanted to mess with my head so I would fail my exams. How vicious. But she underestimated my mental strength.
After some thought, I decided to send Hailey a Snapchat message anyway. "Stay away from Dustin." Hailey replied almost instantly: "Chloe, are you mad at me for taking Dustin?
But we are truly in love. Just let us go and wish us the best." Classic green tea behavior.
I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "Then I hope the two of you stay locked together forever." When I tried to reply again, a red exclamation mark popped up. She had blocked me.
Whatever. You can't wake someone who's pretending to be asleep. I turned off my phone, closed my eyes, and got ready for my exams tomorrow.
Opening · Chapter 3
The next morning, before my alarm could even go off, I was woken up by a barrage of notification sounds.
I picked up my phone and saw that Hailey had posted screenshots of our chat on the forum. "Chloe, I will never give Dustin up to you." The comments were filled with mockery.
I frowned. How did Hailey leak my real name?
Just then, Dusty replied under her post, passionately expressing his love and loyalty. "Babe, I will never let a scheming woman like her steal me away.
My love for you runs too deep. She doesn't stand a chance." One comment caught my eye: "I can't believe I'm witnessing true love in a video game. I'm crying tears of envy.
Harper is so lucky to have a rich guy like Dusty be so loyal to her." I slowly typed a question mark in my mind and reported the post without hesitation. "Guys, stop laughing at Luna.
Dusty is rich and handsome. Anyone would fall for him." So they all misunderstood my message. But is Dustin really handsome?
Every single photo he posted on the forum was heavily airbrushed. Not a single blemish was left. What a scheming man.
During our "relationship," Dustin often sent me his heavily edited photos. But one day, he accidentally sent me a picture of himself lying in bed with a condom in his mouth.
In the photo, he was shirtless, covered in thick chest hair, and unshaven. He looked like a complete creep. Disgusting and eyesearing.
I was shocked for a second and instinctively took a screenshot. He unsent the photo almost immediately.
I didn't know what possessed him to take such a photo, but I was sure he had sent it to me by mistake. Since he loved posting on the forum so much, I figured I’d join the fun.
I created a new thread and used that accidental photo as the cover image.
The title was: "Your handsome, rich prince actually likes to pose with condoms in his mouth?" I even kindly pixelated his nipples.
Even though it was early morning, there were plenty of drama lovers online. Not long after the post went live, the views skyrocketed.
Dustin’s forum status showed he was "Online." I bet he was looking at it right then. I couldn't help but chuckle. Ruining lives with class—it was my specialty.
I quickly got into the right mindset, packed my things, and headed to the exam center. Soon, the morning exam was over.
As soon as I walked out of the school gates, a reporter stopped me.
He asked curiously, "Excuse me, which university are you planning to attend?" Before I could speak, someone nearby yelled, "Do you even need to ask?
Chloe is the top student in our school! Her grades are incredible. She’s definitely going to NYU!" The crowd went wild.
Several people gathered around to watch, quickly blocking the pathway. My desk mate, Riley, who was standing beside me, helped clear the air: "Actually...
Chloe has already been accepted to NYU through Early Decision." The crowd began whispering and gossiping. "If she’s already accepted, why is she even taking the exams?" I said calmly, "Just for formalities." The crowd was stunned again.
The reporters who were squeezed out of the inner circle quickly recorded this moment. I guess I flexed a bit too hard there.
Opening · Chapter 4
When I got home, the first thing I did was open the game forum. As expected, my post was pinned at number one, and the traffic was still surging.
But Dustin was still desperately trying to save face. He quickly posted a clarification, vehemently denying that the person in the photo was him.
To make it worse, he attached nine heavily edited selfies. His fans commented: "I believe him!
This must be an AIgenerated deepfake!" "I can't believe Luna would go as far as framing Dusty. She must be acting out of spite because she got dumped." Excuse me?
Acting out of spite? There was never any love, only pure disgust. So, I posted a few more threads.
I uploaded my purchase history of the limitededition skins I bought for Dustin, along with various other ingame transactions. It totaled over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
I did this to prove I wasn't poor. I thought this would put an end to the drama. But I underestimated these people. "These screenshots are obviously Photoshopped!
Stop spreading rumors, or Dusty's lawyers will send you a ceaseanddesist letter." "Harper said your family is dirt poor, and your parents are just school janitors.
Where would you get the money to buy limitededition skins? Joke of the century." "Even if you had the money, you probably stole it from your parents' hardearned cash.
Little girl, I suggest you delete your account." My proof didn't work. Instead, the attacks turned into classist insults. It seemed like no matter what I said, nobody believed me.
They blindly believed my "bestie," Hailey. In reality, Hailey wasn't my real best friend. We were in the same class in middle school.
She chatted with me a few times and immediately started calling herself my best friend. She was just like Dustin in that regard.
Not only that, but she would constantly find excuses to slip into the Maybach that picked me up after school to come to my house.
Sometimes, she would even camp outside my front door without warning. Eventually, because we commuted together a few times, everyone assumed Hailey and I were best friends.
This dynamic continued until high school. She didn't go to the same school as me; she attended a nearby private vocational school instead.
I thought we were finally done, but she still showed up at my house uninvited all the time.
I didn't care much about the term "best friend." To me, it was no different from a regular acquaintance, so I just let her call herself whatever she wanted.
Only now did I realize how powerful the "bestie" label was. As long as a "bestie" said it, people took it as absolute truth.
