Opening · Chapter 1

My boyfriend, Ethan, was hired as a Beta by the Silver Creek Pack under very generous terms. I gave up everything to follow him here.

But three months had passed, and I was still not accepted into the pack. Ethan hadn't marked me, either. Yet, Ethan approved his cousin, Zara, to join the Silver Creek Pack.

Furious, I decided to leave right then and there. Ethan, usually so calm, looked at me with bloodshot eyes and begged me to stay: "You're my mate, Grace. I'll mark you soon.

Zara is just my cousin." My heart softened, and I put down my suitcase.

Until one day, when I tried to enter the Packhouse, the guard stopped me: "Ma'am, you are not a member of this pack.

Please leave!" No one knew that my fated mate was actually the Alpha of this very pack. He was about to finish his threemonth inspection tour and return to my side.

I got home, but after three tries, the fingerprint scanner on the smart lock still wouldn't open.

I called Ethan. "What's wrong?" He answered quickly. "Why won't the door open?" He went silent for two seconds, then said: "Oh, I reset the lock and only registered Zara's fingerprint.

I haven't had time to add yours yet. Why don't you find a hotel to stay in tonight?

I have to patrol the pack borders tonight and won't be back." He was actually telling me to sleep outside?

I wanted to argue, but in the end, I just replied: "Fine." What else was I supposed to say?

This was supposed to be our place, yet he registered Zara’s fingerprint—an outsider—and locked me out. I hung up the phone. I booked a room at a cheap motel in town.

Fifty bucks a night. When I swiped my card, my balance was almost down to zero. When we first arrived, Ethan gave me a secondary card.

But later, Zara started handling most of his shopping. His clothes, his watches, even his office supplies—she bought all of them.

Gradually, the access to the card was handed over to her. Ethan would just transfer a tiny bit of allowance to my account every month.

He said she was better at shopping, had good taste, and knew how to coordinate outfits. She claimed she was just helping out. I couldn't really say anything.

Until one night, when Ethan and I finally went on a rare date. Just as the mood was getting romantic, the doorbell rang. Ethan went to answer it.

Zara was standing outside, panting, and handed him a box of condoms. "Ethan!

You asked me to buy these for you!" She glanced at me with a natural smile. "You always say this brand is the most comfortable. Aren't I thoughtful?

Don't I deserve a reward?" Ethan took them, letting out an awkward grunt. She waved and walked away. The door closed.

He walked back to the dining table with the box of condoms and tossed them aside. I stared at the box, speechless. I never even knew which brand he preferred...

Because we wanted to have a baby, so we had never even considered using them. That dinner felt like torture.

In the end, he said there was some urgent pack business, grabbed his coat, and left. The moment the door shut, it suddenly hit me.

Her care for him had reached such an intimate level. That night, I dreamed about the year we first arrived. I was dragging two heavy suitcases out of the station.

Ethan was waiting for me at the exit. Back then, he was still the man whose eyes would turn red with guilt because I had given up everything to be with him.

He was the man who would carry my bags and let me lean on his shoulder when I was tired. But then Zara arrived.

Ethan said she was his cousin and that it wasn't easy for her to leave her old pack to find him, so he immediately applied for her dependency status.

He even got her a job as an administrator in the pack's warehouse. Meanwhile, I still hadn't received my pack registration.

I lived in the human town like an undocumented rogue, surviving on odd jobs. And now, he had even given her the access to our home... The next morning, I went to buy a bus ticket.

As I stood by the street waiting for the light to turn green, my phone buzzed.

It was a friend from my old pack. "Grace, about the thing you asked me to look into..." She paused, sounding hesitant. "I pulled some favors, but I could only find out so much.

I couldn't get the specific details of their internal pack records." "It's fine," I said. "Just tell me what you found." The other end of the line was quiet for a couple of seconds. "The Silver Creek Pack has very strict background checks for new members.

Zara was registered as a Beta’s mate to get in." I gripped my phone, unable to make a sound. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine," I said. "Thank you." I hung up. The light turned green.

The crowd surged past me, and another group stopped beside me. I stood frozen, staring at the building across the street. The bright sunlight made my eyes sting.

So, his true mate was her.

Opening · Chapter 2

Standing on the sidewalk, I suddenly laughed.

For the past three months, I had been so exhausted trying to prove my worth, desperate not to be just a dependent, that I had completely ignored the obvious details.

For instance, every weekend, Ethan would claim the pack had business and disappear for the entire day.

Whenever I asked, he would dismiss me with, "You wouldn't understand even if I told you." Or that time I went to drop off something at the Packhouse and saw two sets of toiletries in his quarters—one blue, one pink.

But I had never let myself think too deeply about it. There was also the time I ran into Zara at the local supermarket.

She was tossing items into her cart, and when she saw me, she greeted me warmly. "Grace! You're shopping too?" I nodded.

She glanced at my cart and smiled. "Ethan doesn't like that brand of oatmeal. Next time, let me buy it for him." I froze on the spot.

How did she know what brand of oatmeal Ethan liked? She giggled. "He’s eaten this brand since he was a kid. He’s used to it." Since childhood. Right. They grew up together.

She knew his tastes, she knew his favorite brands, she knew his habits. And I knew nothing. I thought as long as I loved him, I could learn these things slowly.

But someone else had already spent twenty years learning everything I was supposed to know. Another time, I met Zara downstairs after finishing my shift.

She was coming down from our apartment, carrying a trash bag.

Seeing me, she shook the bag and smiled. "Ethan said the kitchen trash needs to be thrown out regularly, or it starts to smell.

I was passing by, so I grabbed it for him." I stared at the trash bag in her hand. That was our kitchen trash. She was even doing that for me. I didn't say a word.

When I got upstairs, I stood at the door for a long time. My hand shook so badly that I couldn't even turn the key in the lock.

Then there was the time Zara walked up to me with a shopping bag. "Grace, I bought Ethan a pair of slippers.

His old ones were worn out, so I grabbed these while I was out." She pulled them out of the bag to show me. They were a pair of dark gray house slippers. I recognized the style.

The slippers Ethan was currently wearing were the ones I bought him three months ago. He had said they were comfortable and wore them constantly. Now, he was replacing them.

With the ones she bought. "You shouldn't have," I said. "Oh, it's no trouble," she laughed. "Just a minor thing." A minor thing. Everything was just a minor thing to her.

Picking up oatmeal, taking out the trash, buying slippers. Stealing his life away from me, one minor thing at a time. ... Shaking off my thoughts, I kept walking.

After crossing two blocks and turning three corners, I arrived at the bus terminal.

As I stood in line, I remembered how long the line had been when I first arrived three months ago. Because I was about to see the man I loved, I hadn't felt tired at all.

I had been so hopelessly naive. When Ethan picked me up, he spun me around in his arms. Until a girl waved at him. "Ethan!

What a coincidence, Grace and I were on the same bus!" It was Zara Hayes. Ethan smiled and took her luggage, explaining to me: "I forgot to tell you, Zara came along this time too.

It's not easy for a young girl to move here by herself." Zara smiled sweetly. "Grace, I hope we can get along." My smile stiffened slightly, but I nodded politely.

On the way, I watched them chat quietly. When she spoke, Ethan would turn his head to listen intently. When she pointed at the clouds, he would look in the direction of her finger.

The attention that was supposed to belong solely to me was quietly shared with her. My chest tightened. But I tried to be happy for him.

After all, having someone he grew up with around would give him some support in the Pack. During the first couple of months, I tried to pass the Silver Creek Pack's assessment.

But after failing to secure a spot several times, I was left with no choice. Since awakening my wolf at eighteen, I had always been one of the top warriors in my old pack.

I had never experienced failure like this. Eventually, having no other option, I brought it up to Ethan. That night after dinner, I sat down next to him.

Hesitantly, I said, "Um... could you... maybe help me out?" "As a Beta's mate, the application process to join the pack should be a bit easier..." I couldn't finish the sentence.

In my entire life, I had never asked anyone for a favor or a shortcut.

Even though this was something I rightfully deserved. "Yeah," he murmured, keeping his head down as he went through his paperwork. "If you want, I'll ask around later." I felt a slight wave of relief.

But that "later" turned into a monthlong wait.

Meanwhile, as far as I knew, Zara had been accepted into the pack long ago, even though her combat skills were practically nonexistent.

The answer had been right in front of my eyes all along. I just didn't want to see it... The line moved forward. It was my turn.

The ticket agent looked at me, waiting for my ID. "Travel between the pack territory and the human town is strictly regulated by the Silver Creek Pack.

You don't have a Silver Creek transit pass, so you can't board any transport." I stood at the window, silent.

Opening · Chapter 3

Three months ago, when I arrived, Ethan had arranged a temporary entry permit for me using his Beta status. "So what do I do now?" "You need someone from the Pack to sponsor you and vouch for your identity before you can buy a ticket.

Next." I stepped aside to let the next person pass. The crowd surged forward, quickly blocking the window. I stood there, completely lost.

So, I couldn't even leave this place without Ethan's permission. Leaving the terminal, I found the transit authorization office run by the Silver Creek Pack.

The person in charge was Mrs. Thompson. I knew her. She was a regular at the bar where I worked. Last time she got drunk, I was the one who walked her home.

It was during that walk that I got the chance to enter the Packhouse and saw Ethan's other home. When I walked into the office, Mrs.

Thompson was sitting behind her desk, scrolling through TikTok. "Mrs. Thompson, I wanted to ask, what documents do I need to leave this place?" Mrs.

Thompson looked up, her face lighting up in recognition. "Oh, I know you! If I remember correctly, your mate is the Pack's Beta.

As a Beta's mate, you should have the proper documents. Why don't you ask him?" Then, leaning in, Mrs. Thompson lowered her voice, asking in a gossipy tone, "Mrs.

Miller, if you don't mind me asking... are you and Beta Ethan really mates?

I mean, he hasn't marked that weak shewolf either... but that Zara girl joined the pack under the status of a Beta's dependent." I kept quiet.

Even though my wolf was absolutely howling with rage. "And..." Mrs.

Thompson whispered, "I heard you actually passed the pack assessment, but Beta Ethan held back your results..." I paused. "I see. Thank you, Mrs.

Thompson." I stood on the street corner for a long time. In the end, I realized there was only one solution— I needed Ethan to authorize my departure. Simple.

He just needed to say the word. But how could I ask?

Should I say, "Since your mate is someone else, can you let me leave now?" If so, wouldn't we have to settle the score for the past three months as well?

I went back to that socalled "home." Ethan wasn't back yet, and the door was still locked. I didn't wait. I broke the lock.

After packing up my things, I headed back to the Packhouse. Mrs. Thompson had convinced the guards to let me in.

I walked straight to Ethan's office, only to hear voices coming from inside. "Ethan, can I really join the pack's patrol team?" It was Zara's voice, laced with a whiny, flirtatious tone. "But my rank is too low, right?

This job is much better suited for Grace. She still doesn't even have official pack status."

Opening · Chapter 4

I stood at the door, frozen. The pack patrol? Ethan had never mentioned this to me. I had been here for three months, and I couldn't even enter the Packhouse without permission.

Yet Ethan was giving a spot on the elite patrol team to his weak cousin. "Don't worry, I've already cleared it with the Alpha." Ethan's voice was gentle. "As for Grace—she has me to take care of her.

She doesn't need any of that." Standing outside, I felt like laughing. So in his eyes, I didn't need any of it. The door opened.

Zara walked out and froze when she saw me. "Grace?" She quickly flashed a smile. "Are you here for Ethan? He's busy right now.

Why don't you wait a bit?" I took a step forward. "Move." She blocked the doorway. "Grace, seriously, you can't go in.

Ethan is handling pack business—" I reached out to push past her.

She immediately took a step back and threw herself backward into the office. "Ah!" Ethan jumped up from his chair and rushed over in a few strides. He glared at me.

It was a freezing, accusing look. Then he bent down to help her up. "Are you hurt?" Zara clung to him as she stood up, biting her lip and shaking her head. "No, no, I'm fine.

I just lost my balance. Don't blame Grace..." Ethan looked at me, his voice sharp with anger. "Zara was just trying to help.

Why did you push her?" I looked at him, then at the tearyeyed Zara in his arms. I didn't bother to argue.

Instead, I went straight to the point. "I need you to talk to the transit office about my pack status." He frowned. "What status?" I explained the situation.

Before I could even finish, his temper flared. "You ran all the way here and pushed Zara just for this?

Grace, when did you become so unreasonable?" "Either you go clear it," I looked him dead in the eye, "or I will go directly to the Alpha right now and ask how the pack handles the status of a Beta's mate!" His face paled.

The next second, his grip tightened around my wrist.

He yanked me close. "Grace, that's enough!" He lowered his voice, his tone turning icy. "Don't forget who allowed you to stay here in the first place.

Without me, you wouldn't even have a roof over your head, let alone go anywhere else." "Stop making a scene.

Go home." I stared at him for two seconds, and suddenly, a laugh escaped my lips.

When he begged me to come here, he said, I'll take care of you. Now he said, I allowed you to stay. "If you do it now, we can still end this with some dignity." My voice was entirely calm.

His eyes darkened, and he let go of my wrist. "Guards!" he called out. Two wolves in uniform stepped inside. He glanced at me. "Escort her out.

She's not feeling well." The guards stepped forward. One grabbed my arm, while the other blocked my path. Before I could speak, a hand quickly covered my mouth.

I was dragged out of the room. As they pulled me past him, he leaned in and whispered in my ear, "We'll talk about this tonight, okay? Stop throwing a tantrum!" Ha... Talk tonight?

There's nothing left to talk about.
