Opening · Chapter 1
Reborn. I swore to stay far away from Julian Vance, the man who had tortured me to death in my past life.
Instead, I chose to embrace Liam Hayes, my childhood sweetheart who had protected me for years. I thought this was my salvation. But Julian was reborn, too.
Conspiracies, manipulation, confinement...
He personally backed me into a corner. "In every lifetime, you can only be mine." And Liam, who once promised to always believe me, doubted me again when it mattered most.
On the day of Liam's wedding, my car plunged off the ocean bridge, bursting into a ball of fire before sinking into the deep sea. The news called it a heartbreaking accident.
Only I knew I was just trying to run away. Later, the whole city went wild. One death certificate.
Two men driven completely insane. "Julian!" I called out to the figure about to brush past me.
Today was my 21st birthday gala, which was also an unwritten "fiancéselection" ceremony among our elite circle. Julian stopped and slowly turned around.
I took a deep breath, reaching out to grab his sleeve. Just like everyone expected, I was going to choose this man whom I had chased all through my youth.
But just as my fingertips were about to touch his cuff, countless violent memories flashed into my mind— It was a luxurious but suffocating room with heavy curtains blocking out all sunlight.
I was curled up in a corner, my hands and feet bound by silver chains. My skin was deathly pale from longterm confinement, and my eyes were hollow and lifeless.
Julian's shadow loomed over me. He held me tightly, his grip painfully fierce. "Chloe Sterling.
You will never, ever get rid of me!" "Even if you die, you have to die in my arms!" The next second, the scene shifted abruptly. I seemed to really be dead.
In a rainy cemetery, Liam was soaking wet, kneeling before my tombstone. He gently laid down my favorite white roses. Then, he calmly raised a gun to his head.
Bang— The gunshot in my mind jolted me awake. I was actually reborn! And it was on the very day of my engagement gala! But my memories were incomplete.
Many events were fragmented, shrouded in a thick fog. Seeing me stay silent for so long, Julian smirked and asked, "Chloe, are you choosing me?" I froze.
A sharp sense of dread washed over me. I remembered that in my past life, Julian wouldn't even say two words to me at this time. Why was he suddenly...
Could it be... he was reborn too? Terrified, I yanked my hand back, the smile completely vanishing from my face. "Excuse me, please let me through." Julian’s smile froze.
His gaze instantly turned sharp and piercing. I was terrified of him. Suppressing the deep fear inside, I walked right past him toward the familiar figure standing in the corner.
Seeing me approach, Liam looked incredulous. "Chloe, what are you..." I took a deep breath. "Liam, will you marry me?" Liam stiffened, nearly dropping his champagne glass.
Wild joy flooded his eyes, and he answered without hesitation, "I—" Great. In this life, there was still time! I let out a long sigh of relief and reached for Liam’s hand.
But someone else grabbed my wrist first, his grip painfully tight. It was Julian.
He stared at me, his eyes scanning my terrified expression before a knowing smirk played on his lips. He leaned down, whispering in my ear, "I knew it.
You came back too." "Long time no see, my Chloe." Before I could react, Julian dragged me into his chest, looking up at Liam.
He spoke in a mocking, playful tone: "She threw herself into my bed last night, begging me to marry her because she’s carrying my child.
She said if I didn't want her, she’d quickly find you to take the fall." "Mr. Hayes, are you sure you want to be a stepfather?" Liam's hand froze midair.
Opening · Chapter 2
The whispers in the ballroom buzzed like flies, accompanied by countless judging stares.I pushed Julian away and was about to explain. But my father walked over, his face livid.Without a word, he raised his hand and slapped me hard across the face! The loud slap made my ears ring, and I stumbled to the floor."You disgrace! You've ruined the Sterling name! How did I raise such a shameless daughter? Forget choosing—you're marrying into the Vance family right now!"Holding my stinging cheek, I refused. "Father, I don't want to marry him!"My father leaned down, whispering with vicious calculation in his eyes, "Don't want to? You think I care who you marry? I care about your mother's stupid will!""As long as you remain unmarried, the core assets of the Sterling family are locked in a trust fund. I have to live like a dog on table scraps!""Do you know how I've survived these past fifteen years? I had to get the board’s approval just to buy Serena a necklace!"Serena was my stepsister. My father loved his mistress and her daughter dearly. After my mother died, he brought them both into our home. For fifteen years, my life had been a living hell.Seeing that I was still resisting, my father raised his hand to strike me again.Julian frowned slightly and silently stepped in front of me, shielding me."Sir, I will take responsibility for Chloe."Seeing he had got what he wanted, my father’s anger subsided. "Fine. Since Julian is willing to marry you, pick a date and get it over with."I still refused.I looked at Liam standing nearby, tears blurring my vision."Liam, do you believe me? I'm not pregnant. He's lying!""The one I want to marry is you! Will you marry me?"Liam looked at my swollen cheek and tearful eyes.He nodded heavily, trying to pull me behind him. "I believe you, Chloe. I'll marry—""Believe?"Julian's calm voice cut Liam off.He casually took out his phone and tapped the screen. An intimate audio recording began to play, loud and clear for Liam to hear."Julian, don't..."A female voice that sounded exactly like mine played, accompanied by the rustle of clothes."Now you're saying no? You're the one who gave me your room key..."A deep, chuckling male voice replied. It was clearly Julian. The recording cut off there.Julian pocketed his phone."Mr. Hayes... do you still believe her?"Liam violently真实地 shuddered. He looked at me, his eyes filled with struggle and shock, which quickly turned into humiliated disappointment. He didn't say another word.Slowly, he pulled back the hand that had tried to protect me.Avoiding my gaze, Liam muttered, "I only believe evidence, Chloe."He turned and quickly walked out of the ballroom.I instinctively wanted to chase him, but Julian stopped me again."Still chasing him?""If he really loved you, how could he believe that recording was real? Anyone listening closely can tell that wasn't your voice."I slapped his hand away and glared up at him. "And what about you? If you claim to love me, why use such cheap tricks? You ruined my reputation in public! Forced me to marry you—is this what you call love?"Julian looked at my red eyes and sighed. He reached out, trying to touch my bruised cheek."Who in our circle is truly clean? Power, greed, dirty secrets... who is better than whom?""Chloe, you're the only clean one."I flinched away from his hand in disgust."Don't drag everyone down to your level!"I ignored him, grabbed my gown, and ran out.I had to explain everything to Liam myself!Julian didn't stop me. He just watched my retreating figure with unreadable, deep eyes. His assistant silently approached and whispered, "Mr. Vance, we've cleared it up. The list of shareholders for the 'underground organ market' is confirmed. Except for you and the Hayes family, every major player in our circle has their hands dirty."Julian didn't look surprised. His eyes only darkened. "What is the Hayes family doing?""Old Mr. Hayes is gravely ill and has lost control. But the side branches of the Hayes family have been in close contact with Arthur Sterling lately. They seem to be aligning."Julian frowned. "What about Liam?"The assistant paused before answering cautiously, "He hasn't taken a clear stance. But the Hayes family has been declining over the years. According to our sources, his attitude is very ambiguous lately. He might get involved to save his family."Julian remained silent for a long moment. He looked toward the hallway where I had disappeared, and ordered coldly, "Keep a close eye on her. Bring her back to me before she crashes and burns.""I won't let Chloe be driven to death again in this lifetime."
Opening · Chapter 3
I ran out of the ballroom and caught Liam standing with my stepsister, Serena, at the corner of the corridor.
Serena was holding his arm, her voice dripping with sympathy. "Liam, don't be sad.
My sister has never been a loyal person." "When the Hayes family was powerful, she followed you around like a lost puppy.
Then when the Vance family rose, she chased Julian for three years. Choosing you today?
She doesn't mean it." "You're just a backup option to her." I walked up, and my eyes locked with Liam's. He didn't deny Serena's words.
He just looked at me coldly. "Chloe, I finally get it now." "I used to follow you around like a dog, doing everything for you, and you never cared.
Asking me to marry you on stage today... did it give you a great sense of accomplishment?" "No! Liam, I never—" I tried to explain, but he cut me off harshly. "Shut up!
Watching me, the guy you once threw away, still hopelessly devoted to you... was it fun? What do you think my feelings are?
Trash you can play with and throw away whenever you want?" Serena’s voice softened, full of sweet temptation. "Liam, my sister doesn't deserve you. Marry me instead!
My father's new project needs a partner. An alliance will bring the Hayes family back to the top." My heart clenched. Something felt incredibly wrong.
But I couldn't remember any exact details about this project from my past life. I could only grab Liam's arm desperately. "Liam, that project is extremely risky!
No legal project can have profit margins that high!" "Chloe!" Serena snapped, glaring at me. Then she turned to Liam with a pitiful look. "See? She just hates to see you succeed!
She's secured her spot with the Vance family, so she's terrified you'll surpass them and make her look bad!" Liam sneered, completely ignoring my warning.
He took a step back and linked his arm with Serena's. "Illegal? High risk?
In your eyes, Chloe, am I always going to be a loser who needs your 'guidance' and 'pity'?" "No, Liam, please believe me just this once!" I was practically begging, but Liam was done listening.
His eyes were icecold. "Chloe, remember today.
Every bit of humiliation and trampled trust you put me through..." "One day, I will pay you back a thousand times over!" With that, Liam walked away with Serena.
Since that day, Liam became a completely different person—ruthless and aggressive. But with this partnership, the Hayes family began to thrive.
My father and Serena teamed up with Liam to completely kick me out of the Sterling Group. They even intentionally set Liam and Serena's wedding date right before mine and Julian's.
I tried to warn him several times. But each time, I was coldly blocked by Liam’s bodyguards. Whenever I saw him from afar at business events, his eyes held nothing but cold hatred.
I didn't want to attend the charity auction that night, but I received an anonymous invitation. I knew it was Serena's doing. But for Liam's sake, I still went.
Sure enough, the moment I entered the venue, Serena waved at me with a sweet smile. "Chloe, you're here!
I saved a special seat for you." Just as I sat down, trying to find a chance to warn Liam again, the host on stage raised his voice. "Our next item is very unique!
It's not a physical object, but an 'opportunity'!" "Generously donated by Mr. Hayes and Miss Serena Sterling—a dance with Miss Chloe Sterling!" The crowd erupted into whispers!
My blood ran cold. I looked over in disbelief. Liam was calmly playing with his glass, while Serena leaned against him, giggling.
They were... auctioning me off like a piece of meat! "Starting bid, one dollar!" The host's words pushed the humiliation to the extreme, drawing laughter and jeers from the crowd. "Ten dollars!" "A hundred!" "I'll give three hundred to dance with her!" My face went pale, my nails digging into my palms.
Suddenly, a deep, familiar voice silenced the noise. "Five million." I turned around. It was Julian.
Opening · Chapter 4
He was leaning against a pillar in the corner of the hall. The clamor stopped instantly. Serena’s face paled, and she tugged at Liam's sleeve. Liam’s expression darkened. "Mr.
Vance is in a generous mood. Too bad the lady doesn't seem very appreciative." His spiteful gaze landed on me. "Chloe, someone is willing to pay so much for you.
Why aren't you smiling?" I stared at Liam, unable to believe he could humiliate me like this. Julian chuckled softly and wrapped an arm around my shoulder. "Mr.
Hayes, you misunderstand. I didn't buy this dance to actually dance.
I just wanted some peace and quiet, so stray dogs wouldn't bother my fiancée." He walked up, pulled me by my waist, and announced to the crowd: "Had enough fun?" "Let's go home, babe." With that, he pulled me out of the auction hall.
In the car, Julian grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. "Do you have any idea what Liam and your father are doing? Their shady business is a oneway ticket to prison!
Right now, everyone is watching you, wanting to use you as a scapegoat!
You need to stay as far away from the Sterling family as possible." "Otherwise, you'll be the next one taking the fall!" A familiar headache hit me, but I didn't even know where the pain came from.
Faced with his interrogation, I could only cry silently. "Julian, I give up." That night, I ran a high fever. I felt trapped in the long memories of my past life.
I couldn't remember what shady business Julian was talking about, nor could I recall what happened after our marriage, why I was locked up, or even how I died.
I couldn't remember any of it. In my daze, a warm hand rested on my forehead, and someone fed me water and medicine. I struggled to open my eyes.
Under the dim light, Julian sat by the bed, his expression complex. "Julian... what really happened in our past life?" Julian was silent for a moment.
Then he gently kissed my forehead. "Rest, Chloe. I'll tell you everything later." "Don't be afraid.
I'm here." I didn't know if I could trust him, but I wasn't going to sit around and wait for doom. I turned my head away. After he left, my phone buzzed under the pillow.
It was a short text message: `[RUN]` The day I recovered was the day of Liam and Serena’s wedding. The wedding venue was grand and luxurious.
Wearing his tuxedo, Liam kept looking anxiously at the guest seats. Serena noticed his distraction. Using the excuse of touching up her makeup, she quickly went to the bridal suite.
The moment the door closed, she dialed a number, her voice vicious and angry. "He still can't forget that bitch!" "Julian Vance is attending the wedding today.
Do it now, and make sure it's clean!" Meanwhile, when I woke up again, I was inside an unfamiliar car. The car was driving on a massive bridge over the ocean.
At the highest point, the driver looked back at me and unbuckled his seatbelt.
His voice was emotionless. "Miss Sterling, it's time." With that, he pushed the door open and jumped out. The car instantly lost control and crashed violently into the guardrail!
In a split second, the car flipped, exploded, and plunged straight into the deep ocean. After a few loud splashes, only ripples and burning oil remained on the dark water.
It was a horrific crash. At the same time, in the wedding hall. Julian walked straight up to Liam, blocking his path. "Liam, stop.
You know that project is dirty." The polite smile on Liam's face froze. "Mr.
Vance, mind your own business." Julian’s eyes darkened, and he sneered, "If you die, she'll be devastated. Otherwise, do you think you're worth my time?
Serena has bad intentions pulling you into this.
Don't let the Hayes family's legacy die in your hands." "If you want to die, go do it somewhere far away from her!" Liam seemed completely triggered, his voice rising. "Julian, stop acting so righteous!
You didn't even let her attend my wedding. You locked her up with your dirty tricks, depriving her of even the freedom to breathe!" "You're a madman.
You'll drive Chloe to her grave sooner or later!" Julian’s face twisted in rage.
He grabbed Liam’s collar, the veins on his forehead bulging. "I hid her because there are countless greedy fools out there like you who want to tear her apart!" Liam violently shoved his hands away, his voice hoarse. "I would never hurt Chloe.
I love her!" Right then— The giant screen in the ballroom suddenly cut to a breaking news broadcast: `[Breaking News: A horrific car accident occurred at the coastal bridge this afternoon.
A vehicle lost control, crashed through the railing, and plunged into the ocean.
The occupant is suspected to have died on impact.]` `[The victim has been identified as Chloe Sterling, the eldest daughter of the Sterling Group.]`
