Opening · Chapter 1
At my daughter’s engagement dinner, I presented her with a luxury downtown penthouse as a wedding gift.
The moment I pulled out the keys and the deed, my son’s fiancée flipped the dining table. "You old geezer!
You cried broke and claimed you couldn't give us $100,000 for our wedding fund, but you turned around and bought a luxury penthouse for this outsider?” “ Put this place in my name right now, or the wedding is off!" I was stunned. "Didn't I just buy you and Cody a luxury condo last month as your wedding home?
This penthouse is for Chloe." Vanessa's voice instantly went up an octave: "She’s getting married and taking another man's last name!
Why should she get a dime of our family estate?" "Either you put this penthouse under my name, or you sell it right now!" I let out a cold laugh and spoke slowly: "The penthouse isn't for sale.
But as for you, Vanessa? We can certainly get rid of you." My daughter Chloe’s engagement dinner was incredibly lively, with everyone showering her with congratulations.
Holding my wine glass, I looked at the happy smile on my daughter’s face, and my heart felt warm.
She had been a sensible girl since childhood, never wanting to cause any trouble for the family. "Chloe, I have a special gift for you." I reached into the inner pocket of my suit, pulled out a set of keys and a deed, and placed them in front of her. "A luxury downtown penthouse.
Two thousand square feet. Just a small token of my love." The entire room went dead silent.
Chloe covered her mouth in shock. "Dad, this is way too expensive..." Just as I was about to say a few heartfelt words, a sharp shriek shattered the atmosphere. "You old geezer!
Have you lost your mind?" Cody's fiancée, Vanessa, jumped up from her chair and pointed a finger right at my nose. "You cried broke last month and said you didn't have $100,000 for our wedding fund, but you turned around and bought a luxury penthouse for this outsider?" I was stunned. "Didn't I just buy you and Cody a luxury condo last month as your wedding home?
This penthouse is for Chloe." Vanessa grew even more shameless. "Put this place in my name right now!
Why the hell should an outsider who’s marrying out get this?" "Vanessa, the way you're talking..." I started to explain.
But my wife, Brenda, stood up and snapped at me: "Arthur, have you gone senile? Our family assets belong to our son! A daughter is just an outsider eventually.
Don't you get that?" Chloe’s face turned deathly pale, and she swayed on her feet.
Zach quickly supported her, glaring at Vanessa with pure rage. "How dare you speak to her like that?" "Did I say something wrong?" Vanessa put her hands on her hips, her voice screeching louder. "This old man lied to us about being broke, but secretly bought a luxury penthouse for an outsider.
If that’s not deception, what is?" I looked at my son, Cody. He was shrinking back into his chair, head hung low, not daring to meet my eyes.
This was the son I had raised for over twenty years. He watched his fiancée insult me and humiliate his own sister, and he didn't have the guts to say a single word.
Brenda was still chiming in: "Exactly! Chloe is getting married anyway. Why does she need a penthouse?
This money should have been given to Cody for his wedding!" Chloe's voice trembled as she spoke. "Mom...
I don't want the penthouse anymore." "Good!" Vanessa pushed her luck even further. "Hand over the deed then. Let's go transfer the title right now!
Change it to my name!" The guests around us began whispering and pointing fingers.
I slowly stood up, putting the deed and the keys back into my pocket. "This penthouse belongs solely to Chloe." Vanessa froze for a second, then went completely ballistic. "You stubborn old bastard!
You dare cross me?
Believe it or not, I’ll walk out right now and take your unborn grandson with me!" I looked at her, a cold sneer forming on my lips. "Cody and Vanessa's wedding is officially called off starting today.
And I am taking back that condo." The room erupted into chaos.
Brenda’s face went white. "Arthur... what crazy nonsense are you talking about?" Ignoring her, I stared directly into Vanessa's eyes. "The baby in your stomach... is it really Cody's?" Vanessa’s expression stiffened instantly.
Cody finally looked up, staring at Vanessa. "Vanessa... you're pregnant?"
Opening · Chapter 2
At the hotel entrance, Brenda lunged at me like a madwoman. "Arthur! Have you lost your mind?
You made our family lose face in front of so many people!" Her hair was a disheveled mess, completely stripping her of her usual dignified act. "Mom, please stop..." Chloe tried to intervene, but Zach held her back.
Vanessa began wailing too, her voice as piercing as a dying pig. "This is all Chloe’s fault! That little bitch is just jealous that I'm marrying into the family.
She purposely manipulated Arthur to kick us out!" Cody finally spoke, but his words made me completely give up on him. "Dad, Vanessa is pregnant.
You can't treat her like this..." "Pregnant?" I sneered. "Are you sure it's even yours?" Cody’s face flushed red. "Dad!
How can you say something so horrible?" "Why can't I?" I looked at this "son" I had raised for over two decades, feeling nothing but disgust. "You're a spineless coward who doesn't even dare to speak up when your fiancée insults your sister.
You honestly think you're man enough to handle her?" More and more bystanders gathered around, and some even started recording on their phones.
Realizing things were getting out of hand, Brenda tried to play the victim. "Arthur, let's just go home and talk, okay?
There are too many people watching here..." "Go home?" I looked at her. "You still think that's your home?" With that, I took Chloe and Zach by the arms and walked away. "Arthur!
Get back here!" Brenda screamed behind us. But I never looked back. Not long after we got home, a loud, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door. "Open up! Arthur!
Open this door right now!" Brenda and Cody had returned, and they had brought Vanessa with them. "Dad, please don't be angry.
Let's just talk things through," Chloe looked at me worriedly. "It's fine. I'm prepared," I patted Chloe's shoulder and pulled out my phone.
The banging on the door grew louder, accompanied by Vanessa's screeching: "You old bastard! You think hiding inside will save you?
This house belongs to us too!" I dialed 911 directly. "Yes, operator? There are people trying to break into my house and destroying my property...
Yes, the address is..." Ten minutes later, the police arrived. "Who called?" "I did," I opened the door. "Officers, these three people are causing a disturbance at my door and attempting to force their way inside." Seeing the police, Brenda immediately changed her tune. "Officers, I'm his wife!
He's gone crazy and kicked his own wife and son out of the house!" "Is that so?" The officer turned to me. "Sir, what's going on here?" I pulled out the deed to the house. "Officers, this house is registered under my parents' names, inherited by me alone.
I have the sole legal right to decide who enters." Brenda’s face drained of color. "Arthur, you..." "Furthermore," I continued, "our marriage is effectively over.
I am currently preparing for a divorce." Cody panicked. "Dad, stop joking around..." "Who's joking?" I glared at him coldly. "The moment you stood by and let someone insult your sister, I knew exactly what kind of trash you were." After understanding the situation, the officers issued a stern warning to Brenda and the others. "This gentleman is correct.
Forcing your way in is trespassing.
If you have marital or property disputes, resolve them through the proper legal channels." "But..." Vanessa wanted to protest. "No buts," the officer said sharply. "If you keep causing a disturbance, we will arrest you." While the police were still there, I called a locksmith company. "Sir, please change the locks on this door right now." "Dad!" Cody was completely frantic now. "What are you doing?" "Changing the locks," I said calmly. "Starting today, only Chloe and Zach are welcome in this house." The locksmith worked fast.
Within fifteen minutes, the new locks were installed. Brenda and Cody stood outside the door, staring blankly as I took the new keys.
Vanessa was still screeching in the background, "Just you wait! I won't let you get away with this!" I didn't even give her a glance before shutting the door.
Opening · Chapter 3
The moment the door slammed shut, Chloe finally broke down. "Dad, this is all because of me..." She covered her face, tears slipping through her fingers. "If only I hadn't gotten engaged, if only I hadn't asked for that penthouse..." "Chloe," I interrupted her gently.
In twenty years, this was the first time I had seen my daughter cry for my sake.
In the past, no matter how much injustice she suffered, she would always lock herself in her room and cry in secret.
I pulled her down to sit on the sofa. "This has nothing to do with you." Zach quietly poured us two glasses of warm water.
When Chloe was eighteen, she got accepted into a prestigious university. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep all night.
The next morning, I went to the bank to withdraw money for her tuition. But Brenda blocked me. "Ten thousand dollars for tuition?" She curled her lip. "Why waste money on college?
Girls don't need to study. She should just find someone to marry early." "But Chloe has such amazing grades..." "So what? Cody just had an off day during his SATs.
He'll definitely get into a better college next year," Brenda said righteously. "This ten grand is going toward a down payment for a car for Cody, so he doesn't lose face in front of his classmates." In the end, Cody drove around showing off a brandnew car, while Chloe had to work parttime jobs just to pay her own tuition.
When Chloe was twenty, she caught a severe fever in the dead of winter.
I had just returned from a business trip to find her face flushed crimson, shivering violently in bed. "Brenda, how long has Chloe been like this?" "Girls are just dramatic," Brenda didn't even look up; she was busy cooking Cody's favorite meal. "She just needs to drink some warm water." I immediately carried Chloe in my arms and rushed her to the hospital.
The doctor said if we had arrived thirty minutes later, the high fever could have caused permanent brain damage.
When Chloe was twentytwo, Cody ran up a tenthousanddollar debt from illegal gambling.
When the debt collectors came knocking, Brenda was terrified. "Chloe, didn't you save up some money from your parttime jobs?" Brenda grabbed Chloe's hand, begging. "Save your brother!
He's still young, they'll break his legs..." Brenda clearly had money in her own accounts, but she refused to touch it.
In the end, Chloe’s hardearned savings from two years of work were all handed over to Cody.
But what broke my heart the most was two years ago, during the toughest phase of my business. My company was on the verge of bankruptcy, and I was too stressed to eat.
Brenda did nothing but demand money for cosmetics, expensive clothes, and allowance for Cody to blow at clubs.
Only Chloe showed up at my office every single day to bring me homecooked meals. "Dad, I know you'll get through this." During those darkest days, my daughter's words were the only thing that kept me going.
My phone suddenly buzzed. It was Brenda. I declined the call. Immediately after, a dozen consecutive calls flooded in. Annoyed, I turned off the phone.
Chloe looked at me with concern. "Dad, about Mom..." "She is not your mother," my voice was as cold as ice. "Starting today, she is nothing to us." A text message popped up on my screen.
It was from Cody. "Why is there no money in my card? I need cash." No "Dad," no "please," just a demanding, entitled tone. Looking at the screen, I laughed.
The phone rang again. "Mr. Miller? This is Mr. Sterling, the lawyer.
I have reviewed the asset division details for your divorce case." The lawyer's voice was highly professional. "Based on the evidence of financial misconduct and deception you provided, she won't be able to get much.
In fact, we can ensure she leaves with absolutely nothing." "Thank you, Mr. Sterling." "You're welcome.
If you're ready, we can file the lawsuit tomorrow." Hanging up, I let out a long breath.
Chloe looked at me, her eyes filled with both worry and admiration. "Dad, all these years, you..." "It was worth it," I held my daughter's hand. "For you, everything was worth it." Outside, Brenda's hysterical screams echoed through the hallway. "Arthur!
You heartless bastard! You're leaving your own wife and son on the streets!" "You'll regret this!
You'll regret this!" I walked to the window, looking down at the three miserable figures on the street below. Regret? My only regret was not doing this sooner.
Opening · Chapter 4
I received a call from Chloe while I was in the middle of a board meeting at my office. "Dad..." Chloe’s voice was laced with tears. "Mom and Cody came to my office." I immediately stood up. "What happened?" "They're downstairs screaming that I'm a thief, saying I stole the family assets.
All my colleagues are watching... Dad, what do I do?" "Stay where you are.
I'm on my way." As I rushed to the lobby of Chloe’s office building, I could hear Brenda screeching from a distance. "Chloe! You ungrateful bitch!
You stole your brother's penthouse! Have you no shame?" Chloe stood near the entrance, her face pale as her colleagues whispered and pointed around her.
Zach shielded her, his face dark with anger. The onlookers whispered intensely. Chloe's tears kept falling.
As I walked over, Brenda spotted me and lunged like a wild animal. "Arthur! You monster!
You left us homeless, and now you're spoiling this girl, giving her a luxury penthouse!" She raised her hand to slap Chloe.
I grabbed her wrist tightly. "Stop right there." "Let go of me!
I'm going to rip this bitch to pieces!" Right at that moment, Vanessa suddenly grabbed her stomach, let out a sharp scream, and collapsed to the floor. "Ah—it hurts!" Cody rushed to her side. "Vanessa!
What's wrong?" Vanessa’s face was pale as she clutched her stomach. "My baby... she pushed me! Chloe pushed me!" The crowd immediately erupted.
But many people had clearly seen that Chloe hadn't even touched her. Yet, Cody immediately pointed the finger without hesitation. "Chloe!
How could you try to kill my baby?" Chloe shook with fear. "I didn't... I didn't even touch her..." "Liar!" Brenda wailed to the heavens. "Attempted murder!
My grandson is gone!" At that moment, one of Chloe's colleagues stepped forward with a phone. "Mr.
Miller, I recorded the whole thing." I took the phone. "Come on, everyone, let's look at the truth." On the screen, the entire incident was captured crystal clear.
Vanessa had thrown herself to the ground.
Chloe hadn't been within two feet of her. "And I have something else to show you all." I pulled a private investigation report out of my briefcase. "Miss Vanessa Blake, you were seen cuddling with another man at a nightclub just last night.
Is that how a pregnant woman behaves?" Vanessa’s face instantly lost all color. "This... this is a frameup!" "A frameup?" I sneered. "Then let's go to the hospital and verify it.
I’ve already called an ambulance." The ambulance arrived shortly after.
After a quick examination, the paramedic looked at Vanessa with confusion. "Ma'am, you aren't pregnant at all." Brenda and Cody froze on the spot like statues.
