Opening · Chapter 1
My husband had a ruptured brain aneurysm, but his parents thought he was just putting on a show.
They were secretly plotting to have him fake his death, scam me out of all my money, and then run off with his pregnant mistress.
But before they could even launch their little scheme, his condition took a sudden, fatal turn. He was in critical danger.
Yet, his parents genuinely believed he was just starting the "fake death" plan ahead of schedule. They violently blocked me when I tried to call 911. "You worthless jinx!
You do nothing but wish death on my son! He just fainted!" "Get the hell out of here! We’re staying right here to watch him.
Nobody is calling anyone!" I looked down at my husband, who was convulsing in agony on the floor. I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud. Fine.
Let’s see who touches a phone first. Looking at Ethan’s symptoms, a wave of panic washed over me—or rather, a thrill.
His neck was stiff as a board, his entire body was shaking violently, and his eyes had rolled back. He was slipping into a coma.
These were the textbook signs of a ruptured brain aneurysm. My inlaws noticed it too and rushed over.
But their small, greedy eyes kept darting toward me, sparkling with a poorly concealed, triumphant glee. I knew exactly what they were thinking.
They thought the "fake death" plan had been moved up. Three days ago, I had intercepted Ethan’s medical report. A 20millimeter brain aneurysm.
Extremely high risk of rupture, highly complex to treat, and overall lifethreatening.
I had walked home with a heavy heart, desperately trying to figure out how to break this devastating news to him. Instead, I ended up overhearing their little family meeting.
The front door wasn’t fully latched, and through the crack, my fatherinlaw, Arthur’s, sneering voice drifted out: "What is there to plan?
That stupid woman Chloe won’t suspect a thing. Just transfer all the assets, dump her, and run off to start a new life with Luna.
Simple as that." "I wish it were that easy, Dad," Ethan’s voice replied, sounding frustrated. "But Chloe controls the finances. If we divorce, she gets half by law.
Luna is pregnant now, and I need every penny of Chloe’s money for my kid!
Why should that bitch get to keep half of what’s ours?" Ethan sounded disappointed, but his tone quickly turned excited again: "Don't worry, Mom, Dad. I’ve got it all figured out.
Luna is a nurse, right? She’s going to forge a terminal diagnosis for me.
I’ll tell Chloe I need expensive, experimental treatments and drain our joint accounts dry." My inlaws practically cheered at the idea. But that wasn't all.
Once the money was safely moved, Ethan planned to "die" and leave a forged will, letting his parents battle me for the house.
Then, while I was drowning in grief, they would use a proxy to trick me into buying a massive life insurance policy, squeezing the very last drop of value out of me.
In the end, I would be left completely bankrupt, while they lived like royalty on my dime.
Once the plotting wrapped up, my motherinlaw, Martha’s, shrill voice rang out: "It’s past dinner time. Why isn't Chloe back yet to cook for you?
Is this how she takes care of my son?" Ethan snorted in disgust. "That brainless pig doesn't know the first thing about keeping me happy. She can't hold a candle to Luna.
Let’s go grab takeout, Mom. Ignore her." I quickly stepped back into the shadows of the hallway, my blood running cold. This level of sheer malice...
Was this really the man I had loved for ten years, the one I had built a life with since college? A burning fury surged straight to my head.
I slowly tore Ethan’s real medical report into tiny, microscopic shreds. Fine. You want to fake your death? Then let’s make it a reality.
Opening · Chapter 2
When I walked through the door that evening, my inlaws immediately started throwing passiveaggressive digs at me. "You can’t even give my son a child, and you can’t even bother to come home early to take care of your husband.
Where were you raised?" Martha sneered. Arthur chimed in, "Because of your useless womb, our family has been the laughingstock of our conservative hometown for years.
You’re a complete waste of space." I secretly found it hilarious. Back when we got married, they were terrified I’d look down on them for being dirt poor.
They used to practically kiss the ground I walked on. Now that they had a pregnant mistress lined up, they suddenly grew a backbone? Ethan quickly cut them off.
He gave his parents a warning look, then turned to me with a plastic, loving smile. "Chloe, babe, my parents missed me and wanted to stay over for a few days.
You don't mind, right?" I knew exactly why they were here—to play their parts in Ethan's little scam. My inlaws stared at me, their small eyes glinting with excitement.
But I was even more excited than they were. Holding back a smirk, I welcomed them in. "Of course not.
With Mom and Dad here to look after you, Ethan, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief." They completely missed my double meaning and simply gave me a cold, dismissive grunt.
Throughout the evening, I played the doting, gullible wife.
Over dinner, I casually brought up a "friend" of mine. "It’s so scary," I sighed dramatically. "A guy at my gym just died of a sudden brain aneurysm.
He was so young, and he had absolutely no symptoms. But once it ruptures, it’s over.
By the time the ambulance got him to the ER, he was already brain dead." I looked at them with mock concern. "You guys really need to take care of yourselves.
We should all get regular checkups." Ethan and his parents exchanged a quick, knowing look, their minds clearly spinning.
A little later, I made an excuse to run to the grocery store. Sitting in my car in the parking lot, I opened the hidden security camera app on my phone.
I had installed tiny cameras around the living room the day before. Sure enough, the three of them were huddled together, whispering gleefully.
Ethan was on the phone, practically glowing with pride. "Luna, babe, forge a brain aneurysm diagnosis for me. I’ll pretend to be admitted to your clinic for treatment.
We’ll drain the old hag’s bank accounts together, and then we’re golden. We’ll be living the high life soon." His phone was on speaker.
Luna’s sweet, dripping voice giggled over the line, promising to get it done. I smirked and closed Snapchat. Enjoy your dream life while you can, sweetie.
You won't live long enough to spend a dime. When I got back, Ethan was waiting for me, holding a tablet with the forged medical report. Tears were welling in his eyes. "Chloe...
I’m sick. The treatment is going to cost a fortune. Maybe I should just give up. I don't want to ruin your future.
Keep the money and live your life." I fought the urge to gag. "Ethan, don't say crazy things like that. I’m taking a sick day tomorrow.
I’m going with you to the hospital to get a full examination." Ethan nodded tearfully, the greed in his eyes practically overflowing.
But what he didn't realize was that he wouldn't make it to the hospital. The very next morning, his real illness struck.
Opening · Chapter 3
Right after breakfast, Ethan suddenly groaned and grabbed his head, collapsing onto his knees. His face contorted in sheer, unadulterated agony.
Then, with a heavy thud, he fell flat on the floor, unconscious. Within seconds, he began to vomit and convulse violently.
These were the classic, undeniable signs of a massive aneurysm rupture.
His family had a history of cardiovascular disease, which was why I used to force him to get detailed annual checkups.
But Ethan, arrogant and lazy, never took his health seriously, thinking he was young and invincible. Who knew karma would strike this quickly? I stepped forward to check on him.
I thought I hated him to his core, but staring at him hovering on the edge of life and death, I felt a brief, instinctive hesitation. This was a human life, after all.
But as I gripped my phone, debating whether to dial 911, my inlaws reacted.
They violently shoved me aside, snatched my phone, and slammed it onto the hardwood floor, shattering the screen. "You worthless jinx! My son doesn't need your damn ambulance!
He’s just dizzy!" Martha shrieked. "Get the hell out of the way! Don't bring your bad luck near my son!" Arthur roared.
I slowly stood up, brushing myself off, a calm wash of realization settling over me. They actually thought Ethan was executing the "fake death" plan early.
They were just playing their parts, trying to keep me from getting medical help so they could claim he "died" at home.
I looked at Ethan, who was shivering and choking on his own vomit. I let out a slow, quiet sigh. Well, Ethan, my love. It’s not that I didn’t try to save you.
Your parents just wouldn't let me. Seeing me stare at Ethan, my inlaws thought I was still trying to interfere.
They grabbed two empty wine bottles from the counter, standing like rabid dogs in front of Ethan’s twitching body. "Get out! My son is young and healthy.
He just needs to rest!" "Stop acting smart!
He doesn't need your help!" I took a step back, positioning myself perfectly so the hidden camera could record their faces and actions in high definition.
If we’re going to put on a show, let’s make it an Oscarworthy performance.
I frantically picked up my broken phone, pulled up the forged diagnosis report Ethan had shown me yesterday, and began to sob hysterically. "Mom! Dad!
Ethan told me yesterday he has a brain aneurysm! His brain is bleeding right now! He’s in critical condition!
We have to call 911 right now!" Hearing the word "hospital," my inlaws panicked. Arthur raised his bottle threateningly. "Shut up! What aneurysm?
You do nothing but curse my son!" "We’re staying right here! Nobody is calling anyone!" Martha yelled. I wept, shoving the broken phone toward them. "Mom, why won't you believe me?
Look at his report! He’s really sick! I’m not making this up!" "If we don't call an ambulance, what do we do? We can't carry him by ourselves!
How are we going to get him to a hospital?" As I put on the performance of a lifetime—the desperate, grieving wife—my sharp eyes caught something. Ethan’s eyelids fluttered.
He was regaining a tiny sliver of consciousness. His mouth opened and closed, desperately trying to make a sound. But his parents were too busy screaming at me to notice him.
Realizing his voice was too weak, Ethan’s trembling hand slowly reached toward the edge of the coffee table, trying to knock over a cup to get their attention.
A cold sweat broke out on my neck. Oh, no, you don't. If they realize you’re actually dying, they’ll call 911, and my peaceful future is ruined.
In a split second, I lunged forward, grabbing Martha’s arm. "Mom, give me a phone! We can't wait!
No matter what you say, I’m calling for help!" Martha, startled by my sudden movement, instinctively shoved me away with all her might.
I staggered backward, lost my balance, and landed my entire weight—butt first—straight onto Ethan’s face.
Opening · Chapter 4
A muffled, agonizing groan escaped from beneath my rear end. By the time I scrambled off him, Ethan’s eyes were tightly shut. He had passed out again.
I shook him frantically, wailing at the top of my lungs. "Ethan! Please don't leave me! Open your eyes!
What am I going to do without you?!" Martha gnashed her teeth, shoving me away again. "Stop speaking death into existence! My son is fine!
Even if you die, he’ll still be breathing!" I snapped, shoving Martha back. "Why are you stopping me from taking him to the ER?! He’s been unconscious for so long!
Are you both blind?!" "I don't care what you say! I’m going to find the neighbors!
We are getting him to a hospital!" With that, I ran out of the apartment, crying and banging on every door in the hallway. But luck was entirely on my side today. To my left, Mr.
Sterling had already left to drop his grandson off at school. Not home. To my right, Liam had left for his corporate job an hour ago. Not home. Mrs.
Higgins upstairs was home, but she was a frail elderly lady who could barely carry her own groceries, let alone a grown man.
Jake, the young guy downstairs, was home and immediately agreed to help.
But the moment he stepped up to our door, my inlaws blocked the entrance like two gargoyles, screaming profanities at him. "My son is perfectly fine!
We don't need some random guy sticking his nose in our business!" Arthur barked. "Are you looking for trouble?
Or are you just my daughterinlaw’s secret little boy toy?!" Martha shrieked. Stunned and thoroughly disgusted by their trashy behavior, Jake slammed his door shut.
I had to start all over again. As I went doortodoor, crying and begging, my inlaws followed me, screaming and sabotaging every attempt.
By the time I finally convinced a couple of brave neighbors to ignore my crazy inlaws and help, more than thirty minutes had passed. Ethan’s condition had deteriorated drastically.
He was lying in a puddle of his own vomit, his body stiffening in an unnatural, rigid posture. The neighbors grimaced at the sight.
I quickly grabbed my car keys, urging them to help me carry him down to my SUV. During the descent, I made sure to be the most panicked, trembling, and terrified wife in the world.
My hands were "shaking" so hard, my grip was incredibly "slippery." We accidentally dropped Ethan’s head onto the concrete stairs four or five times.
By the time we got him to the trunk, his face was swollen like a purple balloon. Arthur’s face contorted with rage.
He pointed a finger at me, hissing under his breath, "You clumsy bitch, are you trying to kill my son?!
When he wakes up, he’s divorcing you!" Once we got Ethan into the back, Arthur pushed me aside and slid into the driver’s seat.
His small eyes gleamed with a sinister spark. "I’ll drive. I know a private clinic nearby. It’s much closer!" I knew exactly what "private clinic" he was talking about.
It was Luna's place. But when we arrived, I almost couldn't believe my luck.
