Opening · Chapter 1
Seven years into my marriage with billionaire Julian Thorne, I was still not pregnant.
Every month, I calculated my ovulation period down to the minute, strictly scheduling our sex life.
I regularly took folic acid, prenatal vitamins, and expensive fertility supplements. I even endured multiple painful hormone injections to stimulate ovulation.
But all my efforts were in vain.
Finally, Julian's mother, Victoria, showed up at my house with a curvy, voluptuous woman in tow. "Since you can't carry a child, stop dragging my son down.
Starting today, Chloe here will do your job and give him an heir." That night, listening to Julian and Chloe groaning and panting in the guest room next door, I finally broke.
I couldn't take it anymore. I demanded a divorce.
When my father, Richard Vance, found out about the divorce, he flew into a raging fury. "How did I raise such a useless, unprofitable daughter?!" "Just because you're barren doesn't mean you can stop your husband from having kids with another woman!
How can you be so selfish?" Soon after, my father sold me off to a notorious mafia boss to secure his next business deal. I thought my life was completely over.
I had no idea this was just the beginning of my true happiness. That man, rumor had it, was old, ugly, and a coldblooded monster who ruled the city's underground.
But during our very first meeting, when I saw his face, I froze. Although he was thirteen years older than me, he was incredibly handsome.
He possessed the kind of calm, quiet charm that only came with maturity.
Wearing a crisp black shirt, he leaned against the bedroom doorway, glanced at me, and tossed a black card onto the nightstand. "This is my secondary card.
I'll transfer money into it every month. Just make sure you keep track of every expense." "I have a son and a daughter.
They both go to a private academy." "Just treat them as your own." He paused, as if it pained him to say the next words, but he forced them out anyway. "After all, you can't have your own." "Consider them your retirement plan." With that, he turned and left without looking back.
I gripped the black card tightly as tears welled up in my eyes again. "You can't have your own." I had been hearing those soulcrushing words for seven long years.
I never expected that after finally escaping the fiery hell of the Thorne family, I would still be humiliated for the exact same reason.
That night, he didn't return until two in the morning. He didn't waste any time. He took a quick shower and got straight into bed. It was a night of silent, intense passion.
I bit down on the pillow, enduring it until dawn. When I woke up the next morning, he was already gone. Looking at the faint bruises on my body, I broke down and sobbed again.
I had just slipped into my robe when Martha, the nanny, came in holding the hands of two children. She introduced them warmly, saying they were Mr. Sterling's twins.
The two children looked at me timidly, trying their best to hide behind Martha. I looked back at them with a blank, indifferent expression.
After all, during those seven years with the Thornes, every time a guest brought their kids over, Victoria would drag me into the living room. "You useless thing.
Touch the baby's feet, maybe some of that fertility will rub off on you. How long have you been married?
You can't even produce a single egg." "A backyard hen is more useful than you." Every single time, her words cut through my heart like a serrated knife.
What made it worse was the highsociety wives surrounding her, laughing and whispering. I felt like I was stripped naked and paraded for their amusement.
And the absolute worst part was after the guests left. Victoria would have the maids drag me to her room.
They would pin me down and forcefeed me experimental fertility liquids and disgusting herbal concoctions. I threw up every single time.
My lips were cut and bruised from the maids forcing my mouth open.
But when I dragged my exhausted body back to our bedroom, Julian would only look at me with sheer disgust. "Did you pick a fight with my mother again?
Can't you just swallow your pride and obey her?" "She's only doing this for your own good.
She just wants us to have a baby." So, countless times in the dead of night, I would wake up in a cold sweat, crying silently in the dark.
Why did a woman's entire worth have to be tied to childbearing? For a long time, I hated the very concept of children.
Seeing my cold attitude, Martha said a few more polite words about the twins and led them out. I didn't bother to stop them.
Instead, I locked myself in the bedroom every day, either reading books or scrolling through Snapchat and TikTok. Dominic, my new husband, never interfered with my life.
He left before dawn and only came back after I was already in bed. He performed his marital duties every night like clockwork, then went to sleep.
Even though we had been married for six months, I didn't even know his full name. The only difference was that as the months passed, the nights became less painful.
Sometimes, I even found myself instinctively responding to his touch.
Opening · Chapter 2
But in the sixth month of our marriage, my period was suddenly two weeks late. If this were the past, I would have gone absolutely crazy with hope and excitement.
But now, I just remained calm, acting as if nothing had happened. After all, during my seven years with Julian. My period had been late multiple times.
Each time, I thought I was finally pregnant and joyfully rushed to tell Julian. But every time he called a private doctor to examine me.
The doctor would just adjust his glasses and sigh. "Mrs. Thorne, you are not pregnant.
This is just a hormonal imbalance and stressinduced cycle delay." Every time the doctor left, Julian would lecture me with cold eyes. "Stop making a fool of yourself.
It's embarrassing." His mother was even worse. The next morning at breakfast, she would throw a cup of hot coffee right into my face. "You pathetic, barren embarrassment!
You knew you couldn't get pregnant, yet you called a doctor over just to get our hopes up!" "Do you have any idea that the Thorne family has become the laughingstock of the entire city because of you?" Thinking back to those memories, my chest tightened with a familiar, suffocating pain.
So this time, I didn't call any doctors. I ate my breakfast in silence and sat by the window, reading and scrolling through my phone.
But to my surprise, around noon, Martha rushed into my room, completely panicked. "Ma'am, Leo's school driver just called.
Leo got into a fight and split another kid's lip open!" I lazily raised an eyebrow. "Then go to the office and find your boss, Mr.
Sterling." Martha's face turned pale with anxiety. "I can't, Ma'am! Mr. Sterling flew out of the country this morning for a massive business deal. He won't be back for a week.
He told me to tell you not to wait up for him." I felt a bit confused. Did I ever wait up for him? Still, I put my phone away and followed Martha out the door.
As we arrived at the elite private academy, a dull ache bloomed in my chest. This was the most prestigious prep school in the city.
I was the daughter of the Vance family, and Julian was the sole heir of the Thorne family. We had practically grown up here.
We had rescued a stray kitten from the school fountain together here. When the teachers made me stand in the hallway as punishment, Julian would always stand right there with me.
When we were teenagers, he had sworn that when he grew up, he would give me the grandest wedding of the century. He kept that promise.
But after the wedding, simply because I couldn't get pregnant. The man who once had nothing but me in his eyes began to treat me like trash.
Tears threatened to spill over, but I forced them back as Martha urged me to hurry inside. Walking down the familiar corridors toward the administration building.
I suddenly spotted a familiar figure standing in the lobby. It was Julian. I hadn't seen him in six months, and he looked as sharp and handsome as ever.
There was no trace of misery or regret on his face from losing me. Instead, he looked completely triumphant. Unlike me, who had spent the last six months crying almost every day.
I was so haggard that I didn't even dare to look in the mirror. Just as I froze in my tracks.
A woman dressed in headtotoe Chanel and wearing Christian Louboutin red bottoms walked into the lobby, escorted by an assistant. I recognized her instantly.
She was Clara, the former headmaster's pampered granddaughter. When we were kids, Julian and I used to play with her.
The moment she saw Julian, she threw herself into his arms. "Julian, I missed you so much!" Julian's stern expression instantly melted into a warm, gentle smile.
He caught her expertly and ruffled her hair. "Careful now. You're a grown woman, stop running around like a clumsy kid." The intimate scene felt like a physical blow to my chest.
The school administrator guiding me whispered with a knowing smirk. "That's Clara. She's the daughter of our board of directors. She and Mr.
Thorne are getting married next month." "They are deeply in love, so they tend to be quite affectionate." I gripped my phone so hard my knuckles turned white. Married? So soon.
But of course. Julian probably couldn't wait to shake me off. Even when he signed the divorce papers and his eyes looked slightly red.
Knowing him as well as I did, I could easily see the immense relief hidden deep within his eyes. I forced myself to look away.
Since I was divorced from Julian, we were nothing but strangers. Who he married had absolutely nothing to do with me anymore.
But even though I told myself that, my heart still stung like it was being pricked by a thousand needles. Fortunately, the administrator soon led me to the principal's office.
As soon as I walked in, I saw my sixyearold stepson, Leo. His face was bruised, and there was dried blood at the corner of his mouth.
Next to him stood another boy, looking smug and arrogant. I recognized that kid, too. It was Hunter, the son of Julian's toxic, gossiploving sister, Beatrice.
Every time Beatrice came to visit the Thorne estate, she would stir up trouble. Victoria would have me kneel in the courtyard as punishment while Beatrice watched and laughed.
It was actually because of one of those humiliating incidents that I finally decided to get a divorce. The moment I walked in, the teacher, Mr.
Collins, came out holding a heavy plastic folder.
He glared at Leo and barked, "Get over here and tell me why you started this fight!" Leo's eyes were bloodshot. "He insulted me first!" "He said my new stepmother is a barren woman who couldn't even keep her exhusband, and that my dad is just a garbage collector who picked up another man's trash!" "I couldn't take it, so I—" Mr.
Collins cut him off harshly. "Enough with your lies!" "Physical violence is never tolerated.
If I don't discipline you today, you'll grow up to be a menace to society." "Put your hands on the desk.
You're getting detention, and I'm calling the board." Leo bit his lip until it almost bled. "No! He started it—" Before he could finish, Mr.
Collins grabbed Leo's arm aggressively, shoving him toward the desk. I had no emotional connection to this boy, Leo. I had only come here today to fulfill my duty as a stepmother.
But at this exact moment, this biased teacher was crossing the line. I marched forward and slammed my bag onto the desk. "Hey!
Are you seriously putting hands on my son without even hearing the full story? Do you think he doesn't have parents to back him up?"
Opening · Chapter 3
Everyone in the room snapped their heads toward me. The first to react was Leo. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and threw his arms around my legs. "Mom!
Hunter hit me!" My legs trembled slightly. This was the first time a child had ever hugged me.
It was also the first time I realized how small and incredibly soft a child's hands could be. I didn't push him away. Instead, I glared coldly at Mr.
Collins. "You claim my son is lying, yet you didn't even bother to investigate before laying your hands on him. What kind of educator are you?" Mr.
Collins gritted his teeth, his face turning red with anger. "What does an ignorant woman like you know about discipline?" Before I could reply, Hunter chimed in from the side, sneering. "Mr.
Collins, she's not even a real woman.
She's just the barren trash my uncle threw out of the Thorne family!" "She was married to my uncle for seven years and couldn't even produce a single heir.
She's just a useless beggar." I clenched my fists. See? This was the Thorne family. Even a spoiled sixyearold kid felt entitled to humiliate me with such vile words.
I didn't deign to reply to Hunter.
Instead, I knelt down, looked into Leo's eyes, and whispered, "Can you beat him in a fight?" Leo blinked in surprise, then nodded slowly. "Then go back over there and beat the crap out of him." "If you start losing, I'll have Martha help you." A spark of pure joy lit up Leo's eyes.
I gave him a gentle pat on the back. "Go." Leo shot forward like a bullet, slamming straight into Hunter. I had seen Leo practicing Taekwondo in the backyard before.
Even at six years old, he could easily break a onecentimeterthick wooden board. I had found it strange that a tough kid like him would let a pampered brat like Hunter bully him.
But getting hit didn't matter. As long as he hit back twice as hard.
Sure enough, within seconds, Leo had Hunter pinned to the floor, pounding him until the kid wailed like a dying animal. Mr.
Collins panicked and lunged forward in a rage. "You little brat! How dare you lay a hand on a Thorne!
I'll teach you a lesson—" He raised his arm, about to forcefully yank Leo off Hunter. I turned to Martha and barked, "What are you standing there for?
Pull that teacher away and give him a piece of your mind!" Martha looked at me in terror. "But...
Ma'am..." I cut her off coldly. "If you don't act right now, you can pack your bags and leave tonight." Driven to a corner, Martha rolled up her sleeves, charged at Mr.
Collins, and grabbed him by his hair, dragging him to the floor. "How dare you touch our young master!" She sat right on top of Mr.
Collins and delivered three ringing slaps across his face. The office descended into absolute chaos. Hunter was crying bloody murder on the floor under Leo's fists. Mr.
Collins was screaming for help under Martha's slaps. I stood there, watching the glorious mess unfold. A cold, mocking smirk played on my lips.
A barren woman who couldn't keep her husband? Fine. I'll show you exactly what this "barren" woman is capable of.
As I was enjoying the view, a freezing voice cut through the air from behind me. "Stop this!
What on earth is going on here?" Hearing Julian's voice, I gripped my phone even tighter. But I didn't turn around. I simply said to Martha and Leo, "Keep going.
If anything happens, I'll take full responsibility." Julian finally recognized my voice. He marched over in utter disbelief and grabbed my wrist. "Alina?
What are you doing here?" His grip was painfully tight. Without hesitation, I swung my free hand and slapped him hard across the face.
I quickly took two steps back and glared at him. "Julian Thorne, don't touch me. We are divorced.
Keep your hands to yourself." Julian was completely stunned by the slap, staring at me as if I had grown a second head.
But the next second, his nephew Hunter's desperate cries filled the room. "Uncle Julian! Save me!" Julian glared at me with pure hatred before rushing over to Hunter.
He grabbed Leo by his collar and yanked him up. But Leo was smart. The moment his feet touched the ground, he wriggled free, ran over, and hid behind my back.
Martha quickly scrambled up and stood beside me as well.
Looking at Hunter's bruised and swollen face, Julian turned to me, his brow furrowed in deep anger. "Alina, you know Hunter has a weak constitution!
How could you let this happen?" "How did you become so vicious?" "You don't behave like a lady from a prestigious family anymore!" Those words.
They instantly dragged me back to my seven years of marriage.
Whenever I complained to him about Beatrice coming over to stir up trouble, or about his mother forcing me to kneel because I wasn't pregnant, Julian would look at me with that exact same expression of disgust. "Alina, look at yourself.
You've become so bitter and toxic, always complaining.
Where is the poised lady I married?" Then, he would throw his phone onto the couch and lock himself in his study, completely ignoring me.
Back then, I would always cry myself to sleep. But now, I only felt a cold amusement. "Whether your nephew is weak or not is none of my business." "Let me make this clear, Julian.
If your nephew ever touches my stepson again, I'll make sure my stepson beats him to a pulp." "And you better teach that brat of yours to shut his mouth.
If I hear him spreading lies about me again, I won't hesitate to have my brother Ethan pay a visit to your headquarters and ask if the Thorne family is run by a bunch of gossiping losers." I expected Julian to explode in rage.
After all, during our seven years of marriage, I had never dared to talk back to him because of my guilt over not having a child.
But to my surprise, his eyes filled with a sudden, intense pain. "You... you got married? You're married again?" I blinked, slightly surprised.
I didn't expect Julian to be completely clueless about my remarriage. But then again, it made sense.
By the time we divorced, he was probably so sick of me that he never wanted to hear my name again. I smirked coldly. "Why?
You can move on, but I can't?" With that, I gently pulled Leo from behind me. "Go get your sister. We're leaving this school." Then, I turned to Mr.
Collins, who was clutching his bleeding face. "Congratulations.
After today, no school in this city will ever hire you again." "I'll have my brother send a memo to every board of directors. You are blacklisted." Mr.
Collins forgot all about his pain, his face turning pale. "I... I..." I looked at him with sheer disdain. "Let this be a lesson.
It's not just the Thorne family's kids who are precious.
The Sterling family's kids are just as untouchable." Finally, I looked at Julian, who stood frozen in place, looking like he had seen a ghost. "Julian, from now on, walk the other way when you see me.
Otherwise, I'll hit you every single time." "And if you ever lay a finger on me again, I'll make sure you lose that hand." Without giving him another glance, I turned and walked out.
After seven years of marriage, he was finally nothing but a stranger to me.
Opening · Chapter 4
When we got home, I immediately took Leo to my room to tend to his scrapes. Leo clenched his fists, his face flushed red, but he didn't utter a single cry of pain.
His sister, Lily, leaned her head on her hands, watching me with curious, bright eyes. I had always disliked children. But for some reason, I didn't mind these two at all.
After applying the ointment to Leo's scratches, I instructed Martha to take them to their rooms to eat.
But Leo suddenly hugged me tight. "Mom, can we eat in your room?" Before I could answer. Lily mirrored her brother, grabbing my other arm. "Please, Mom!
Let us eat here with you!" My body went stiff for a second. Seeing this, Martha quickly intervened, her eyes softening. "Ma'am, please let them stay.
Ever since the day you married Mr. Sterling, the children have wanted to eat with you." "They're twins, you see.
Their biological mother passed away from complications right after they were born." "Mr. Sterling had to play both roles, but he's a busy businessman.
He doesn't know the first thing about raising kids." "In the past, when the young master and mistress were bullied at school, Mr.
Sterling would just drag them home and scold them for getting into trouble." "This is the first time anyone has ever stood up for them." Tears glistened in Martha's eyes.
I squeezed my phone slightly. "Alright. You two can eat here with me." But once I opened that door, there was no going back.
Over the next few days, the twins didn't just eat with me—they ended up sleeping in my bed too.
Since they were suspended from school, they spent their days dragging me outside to fly kites or take them to the park. In a blink of an eye, a week passed.
One night, as I was fast asleep with a twin tucked under each of my arms. I heard the faint sound of the bedroom door opening.
I blinked my eyes open sleepily and saw Dominic standing in the doorway. He had just returned from his business trip and was still in his suit.
Seeing the two kids sprawled across the bed, he froze for a few seconds. Then, he quietly closed the door and stepped back out.
A few minutes later, he returned, having changed into his sweatpants and a tshirt. He stood by the bedside, looking down at me. "They're sleeping here.
Where am I supposed to sleep?" His voice was a low whisper, careful not to wake the kids. This was the first time I had looked at him so closely.
The moonlight filtered through the window, illuminating his sharp features. He looked nothing like the crude, vulgar mobster of the rumors.
His dark eyes were deep and carried an emotion I couldn't quite read.
I glanced at the sleeping twins. "Why don't you sleep in their room tonight?" He remained silent for a few seconds. "Alright." With that, he turned and left.
A moment later, I heard the faint click of a laptop opening in the study next door. He was working. I rolled over, a strange, warm feeling blooming in my chest.
When I woke up the next morning, Leo and Lily were already gone. I assumed Dominic had left for work as usual. But just as I sat up and threw on my robe.
There was a soft knock on the door. "Can I come in?" Dominic pushed the door open, holding a warm glass of milk.
He set it on the nightstand. "Martha took the kids to the amusement park." "Did you sleep well last night?" I nodded.
He sat on the edge of the bed and stayed silent for a moment. "Alina, I want to talk to you about something." I looked at him. "Go ahead." "The deal I went abroad for... it went through." "My business is going to expand significantly." "I'm not telling you this to brag." "I just want you to know that even though people call me a ruthless street thug, every single penny I have was earned honestly." "I started working when I was a teenager, fighting my way up from the streets to get to where I am today." "I don't have a fancy Ivy League degree, but I'm not a fool." His voice was calm and steady.
There was no anger, no selfpity. He was simply stating facts. Then, he paused and said, "My name is Dominic Sterling." I stared at him, slightly stunned.
This was the first time in our six months of marriage that he had formally introduced himself to me. "I know." He nodded and stood up. "And one more thing." "What is it?" "About the kids... don't take what I said before to heart." "I didn't marry you because you can't have children." "I married you because... never mind." He turned and walked out.
I stood there, staring at the warm glass of milk, unable to move for a long time.
