Opening · Chapter 1
When the armed intruder broke in, I was alone in my office. A madman with a knife charged at me, but I deleted the SOS message I was about to send to my boyfriend.
In my past life, I had begged Ethan Carter for help. He had rushed over and saved me, but his arm was severely injured in the process.
Because of that, he demanded that I perform a highrisk surgery on his "sister," Chloe Sterling.
The surgery was a technical success, but Chloe was devastated by the postop side effects and jumped off the hospital building. Ethan claimed he didn’t blame me.
As a doctor, he knew I had done my best. In fact, he treated me even better after that.
But on the day of Chloe’s funeral, one week after her death, he lured me to her grave and used a scalpel to slice the tendons in both of my wrists.
He pinned me to the dirt, grabbing my hair and slamming my face against her tombstone over and over again like a maniac. His voice was freezing cold: "It’s all your fault!
If you hadn’t botched the surgery, Chloe wouldn't have killed herself!
Since you're such a useless doctor, you don't need these hands anymore!" "Today, you will beg her for forgiveness on your knees until your head bleeds!" Under his brutal grip, I quickly lost consciousness and died in a pool of my own blood.
But when I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day of the hospital attack. "Where are the doctors?! Get out here!" "Quacks! All of you! You killed my father!
I want blood!" A man was screaming hysterically in the hallway, brandishing a pocket knife.
I had been so engrossed in organizing my patient files that I hadn't noticed the commotion outside. By the time I looked up, my eyes locked right onto his. My heart skipped a beat.
I instantly bolted toward the door to lock it. But I was too late. A hand shoved its way through the gap, and a glinting blade lunged right before my eyes.
I threw my entire weight against the door. My phone buzzed. On my screen, a text to Ethan was ready to be sent. "Ethan, there's a guy with a knife in my office!
Call security!" Remembering how he used his "rescue" to blackmail me in my past life, I gritted my teeth. I deleted the message, character by character.
The people outside had already scattered. I was on my own. Beads of sweat rolled down my forehead as I tightly gripped my phone and dialed 911.
The dispatcher urged me to stay calm and assured me that officers and hospital security were on their way. But the man outside heard the voice from my phone.
Infuriated, he slammed against the wooden door with savage force. The door burst open.
In that split second, I saw a flash of silver, and a splash of crimson splattered before my eyes.
A broad shoulder shielded me, and in the distance, the heavy footsteps of security guards echoed down the hall. "Summer, are you okay?" Ethan looked at me with sheer panic.
He grabbed my hands, inspecting them frantically, before letting out a massive sigh of relief. "Thank God your hands are fine." I snapped out of it and stared at him.
In my past life, when the attacker broke in, the trauma of my previous death combined with the immense pressure made me faint instantly.
Seeing me stare, Ethan pulled me into a tight embrace, his hot breath brushing against my ear. "Summer, when I heard someone was running around the clinic with a knife, I almost went crazy.
I ran all the way down from the upper floor. Why didn't you text me? I could have saved you sooner." His chest reeked of gardenias—Chloe's favorite perfume.
I wrinkled my nose and pushed him away. "Are my hands really that important? Important enough for you to risk your life?" He paused, his grip tightening on my shoulders.
He stared into my eyes with intense gravity. "Of course they are! You’re the star neurosurgeon here. Your hands are everything! They’re more important than my own life!
Summer, you must protect your hands at all costs!" The memory of him slicing my tendons flashed through my mind, and I swallowed the bitterness in my throat.
In my mind, I added: It’s not me you care about. It’s these hands. The hands that can cure Chloe. I pushed him aside and stood up.
But Ethan grabbed my wrist, frowning. "Summer, where are you going?
You need to rest." I lowered my gaze, fighting to keep my emotions under wraps. "I’m going to check on the person who actually saved me." "He got hurt protecting me.
I need to thank him and see if there’s anything I can do." A flash of annoyance and frustration crossed Ethan's face, but since my reason was perfectly valid, he had no choice but to let go.
As I rounded the corner of the hallway, I glanced back and saw him angrily punching the desk.
I pressed my lips together. Ethan, how are you going to trick me into taking Chloe as my patient this time? I stood outside the recovery room and knocked. "Come in," a cold, smooth voice called out.
I walked inside. When I saw the man lying on the bed, I froze in shock. "Julian? What are you doing here?"
Opening · Chapter 2
"Long time no see, Summer Vance." Julian Wright looked at me, his dark eyes brimming with warmth. "Have you made up your mind?
Are you going to join our research team?" I frowned, looking at him disapprovingly. "Julian, did you fly all this way just for an answer? I replied to your email.
You should know my decision. Why did you come here... and risk your life to save me?" Julian smiled gently, touching the bandaged wound on his arm. "I know.
But I wanted to try one last time.
If this trial succeeds, it will revolutionize neurosurgery and save countless lives." "Summer, you told me before that you were getting married and didn't want to relocate abroad.
What if I move the entire lab here? Will you join us then?" My heart thudded.
I suddenly remembered that the day before I declined Julian's offer in my past life, Ethan had proposed to me.
That was the only reason I had turned down the opportunity of a lifetime. Recalling the misery of my past life, my fingers trembled.
I looked at the man in front of me and made up my mind. "Okay. I’m in." Lost in thought about Julian's research project, I unconsciously wandered back toward Ethan’s office. "Ethan!
I don't want her operating on me!" The sharp voice instantly snatched my attention. In my past life, her voice had been a recurring nightmare that haunted me to my grave.
I stopped in my tracks. Inside the office, Ethan was patiently coaxing Chloe. "Chloe, Summer is the only neurosurgeon in the state who can pull off this surgery. Just be good.
I’ll take you to see her tomorrow, and I promise she’ll agree." Chloe threw a tantrum, her voice dripping with petulance. "How could she possibly treat me with care?
I’m your exwife!" Ethan continued to soothe her. "She won't know who you really are to me. She'll think you're just my younger sister.
She'll do everything she can to save you." Exwife?! I gasped, covering my mouth in shock. She wasn't his sister—she was his exwife!
Ethan had been lying to me from the very beginning! From inside the room, Chloe’s quiet whimpers drifted out. "Ethan, I hate it when you get close to her.
The way you look at her is different. Do you... do you not love me anymore? Have you fallen for her?" "Are you still mad that I moved abroad and divorced you? I’m so sorry.
I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have chosen my career over you. Ethan, let's get remarried." Ethan let out a soft chuckle. "Don't overthink things.
Everything I'm doing is for you." "Stop throwing tantrums, get the surgery, and I'll promise you anything." Before long, the sound of heavy, breathless kissing echoed through the door.
My nose flared, and hot tears spilled over without warning. It was all a lie.
Ethan had put on a threeyear show just for his exwife, while I had loved him blindly inside a cage made of deception.
In my past life, even at the moment of my death, I had convinced myself that he was just a grieving brother who had lost his mind.
Returning to this life, my only goal was to avoid operating on Chloe. Ethan, if you always intended to get back with your exwife, why on earth did you propose to me? The next day, as expected, Ethan brought Chloe to my office.
Chloe sat in a wheelchair, a thick blanket draped over her legs. In reality, she had been admitted a week ago.
But because her tumor was highly complex and she stubbornmindedly demanded a "flawless" recovery with zero side effects, the department had been debating the surgical plan for days.
Seeing me glance at her legs, Chloe’s lips quivered. She looked up at Ethan, tears welling in her eyes as she pulled weakly at his sleeve. "Ethan... does Dr.
Vance look down on me because I'm crippled?" Hearing this, Ethan’s face darkened instantly. He shot me a glare as sharp as a dagger. "Summer! How can you treat a patient like this?
Where are your professional ethics and compassion? Apologize to Chloe right now!" The sudden accusation pierced my heart.
A flash of hidden sorrow crossed my eyes as I stared at Ethan in utter disbelief. The patients waiting in the hallway peered through the open door, whispering.
Ethan stiffened slightly, his lips parting as if he wanted to backtrack. A bitter smile crept onto my face.
Under the watchful eyes of the onlookers, I turned to Chloe. "I apologize, Ms. Sterling. I didn't mean to offend you.
I was merely analyzing your clinical presentation." Chloe let out a dismissive huff. Ethan pushed her wheelchair closer to my desk.
He sat beside me, secretly grabbing my hand and rubbing it coaxingly.
He whispered, "Summer, I didn't mean to snap at you." "Chloe has been pampered her whole life, and she's extremely sensitive right now.
Please don't take it personally." I ignored him, pulling my hand back and sitting up straight. "Ms. Sterling, I believe my colleagues have already briefed you on your condition.
With our current technology, the bestcase scenario is removing the tumor to help you walk again, but there is a high probability of a permanent limp." Chloe’s face twisted in rage.
She grabbed the pen holder from my desk and hurled it straight at my face. "Enough! I only want to hear how you're going to cure me completely!" "Some 'star neurosurgeon' you are!
You're a fraud!" With that, she burst into tears and wheeled herself out of the room. The pen holder had sliced my forehead, and a warm trickle of blood began to seep down my face.
Yet, Ethan only gave me a cold, lingering look before rushing out to chase after her.
The waiting patients watched the entire scene unfold and began whispering loudly. "Wow, that doctor just made a patient cry." "And she calls herself a specialist?
The patient called her a fraud and she didn't even deny it. What a joke! I'm getting a refund on my appointment." "I knew she was too young to be reliable.
Didn't you hear the male doctor? He said she has no ethics!
Let's get out of here." I lowered my head, blinking back the burning tears, and silently cleaned up the mess on the floor.
Opening · Chapter 3
That evening, I was packing up my desk when Ethan walked into my office.
He stood there with his arms crossed, staring at me in silence. "You shouldn't have said those things to her." His voice broke the suffocating quiet of the room.
I set down the medical charts and met his gaze, completely unfazed. "I only gave her my professional medical opinion. Currently, tumor removal is the only viable option.
No one can guarantee she won't have a limp." "Even if I perform the surgery myself, the outcome remains the same." Ethan’s expression morphed into pure rage in an instant.
He lunged forward, grabbing me by the throat, and snarled, "Summer Vance, shut up!" "You have the steadiest hands in the city! You are the best surgeon!
You can cure her!" The air was violently squeezed from my lungs. As suffocation set in, his twisted, monstrous face blurred before me.
The terrifying memories of my past life rushed back like a tidal wave. I clawed at his hands, tears streaming down my face.
As if burned by the heat of my tears, Ethan suddenly let go, stumbling back in panic. "Summer... I didn't mean to. I...
I just got too anxious hearing you say that." Seeing the sheer terror in my eyes, Ethan’s gaze flickered guiltily. He quickly looked away, unable to meet my eyes.
I gasped for air, my voice sounding like a broken accordion as I forced the words out: "Ethan... Chloe is the most important person in the world to you, isn't she?
You'd die for her, wouldn't you?" Ethan looked back at me.
He was about to put on his usual apologetic mask to soothe me after a fight, but when his eyes landed on the dark red handprints on my neck, his mouth opened and closed.
Ultimately, he couldn't bring himself to tell the lie. Instead, he muttered coldly, "I don't want to fight with you. As a doctor, saving lives is your duty.
You should reflect on why you aren't putting in 100% effort to save Chloe." After he slammed the door, the office fell into a dead silence.
In that moment, I realized Ethan really would have killed me. Chloe was his absolute trigger.
A man who was usually so rational and collected completely lost his mind the second she was involved. I slumped onto the floor, staring at the ceiling.
Ethan had set his sights on me. No matter what, he would force me to perform Chloe’s surgery. But if I did, I would only end up dead, just like in my past life.
The only way out was to disappear. To go somewhere he could never find me. The next morning, as soon as I arrived at the hospital, Dr.
Miller excitedly announced that Chloe had finally consented to the surgery. My hand froze on my mouse. I had to speed up my departure. "Great.
I’ll leave next week," I muttered to myself. Just then, Ethan walked in.
His sharp eyes scanned my phone screen before he asked suspiciously, "Where are you going next week?" I locked my phone and acted natural. "Isn't our engagement party next week?
I was booking a flight for my mom." Ethan froze for a second, then gave a faint, dismissive nod. "Don't bother.
The engagement party is canceled." I looked up, stunned. "Why?" Ethan explained that Chloe’s condition for agreeing to the surgery was that he had to get engaged to her.
He had agreed to use our prebooked venue and party setup. To "save time." Even though I was already completely disillusioned, a wave of profound humiliation washed over me.
What did I ever do to deserve this kind of degradation? Was it because I made the mistake of loving him, or because my surgical skills were too good?
My voice trembled with anger. "Ethan, you told me she was your sister! How can you get engaged to her?
Have you been lying to me this whole time?" Ethan pressed his lips into a thin line, his eyes darkening.
He turned the tables and snapped at me coldly: "Summer, I see you still haven't reflected on your attitude! Where is your compassion?
As a doctor, is our relationship status the only thing you care about?" "Chloe is terrified of this surgery. This is her only wish before going under the knife.
Can't you just accommodate her for once?" "It's not like I'm actually marrying her!" Seeing that I remained unmoved, his tone softened slightly, likely remembering that he still needed my hands for the operation. "Summer, I'm sorry I didn't tell you the truth from the start.
I just didn't expect you to be so insecure about our relationship. I watched Chloe grow up. To me, she really is just like a sister." "You love me more than anything.
You can treat her like a sister too, right?" A bitter smile played on my lips. During our relationship, I had told Ethan "I love you" countless times.
Now, those words had become the very weapon he used to manipulate me. Unwilling to waste any more energy, I feigned indifference and nodded. "You're right.
The patient comes first." Ethan’s tense shoulders relaxed, and a relieved smile spread across his face. "I knew you were the reasonable one." He pulled me into his arms, kissing my forehead gently. "Don't worry.
Once Chloe is cured, I won't let her bother us ever again." On the day of the engagement party, Chloe wore my custommade dress and shared a passionate kiss with Ethan under a romantic, snowcapped mountain backdrop.
Meanwhile, I was already at the airport.
Watching the video clip a colleague had sent me, I typed out a final text, sent it, and immediately blocked Ethan on every platform. "Ethan, I hope you both get exactly what you deserve." "Goodbye forever." Back at the venue, Ethan was frantically searching the crowd for Summer, but she was nowhere to be found.
He grabbed Dr. Miller by the shoulder. "Dr. Miller, have you seen Summer?" Dr. Miller glanced down at his Snapchat chat with Summer, then looked up skeptically. "Dr.
Carter, it's your engagement party. Why are you looking for Dr. Vance?" Ethan’s mouth opened, but no words came out.
He and Summer had kept their relationship a secret at work, so no one in the hospital knew he had proposed to her.
Today's party was originally supposed to be the day they went public. Dr. Miller shook his head in disbelief. "You don't know? Dr. Vance resigned.
She should be on a flight out of the city by now." Ethan’s entire body went rigid. His breathing turned ragged as he grabbed Dr. Miller's collar. "What did you say?
Summer resigned?!" Dr. Miller, thoroughly annoyed and confused, shoved Ethan away and shoved his phone screen into Ethan's face. "Look for yourself!
She posted her farewell message in the Snapchat group today." Ethan's mind went completely blank. His eyes turned bloodshot, and he roared frantically: "How dare she!
How could she leave?! Who is going to operate on Chloe?!"
