Opening · Chapter 1
On the night of my father's 70th birthday gala, my wife Chloe's lover, Tyler, crashed the party.
He projected their sex tape onto the massive screen and grabbed the microphone to mock me in front of everyone: "Ethan Miller, do yourself a favor and divorce Chloe." "She told me sleeping with me is way better than with you.
I'm the one she actually loves." My dad's heart gave out right there. He was rushed straight to the ICU. The last shred of dignity in my marriage was ripped away.
I became the laughingstock of the entire city. The next day, I invited Tyler out and treated him to a live show. In a hotel room, Chloe was sleeping with over a dozen men.
I scoffed and sneered at him: "Looks like she's having a better time with them than with you.
Guess you need to work harder, bud." "Ethan Miller, you're a sick psycho!" Tyler punched me square in the face, roaring at me to let Chloe go.
The two bodyguards behind me stepped forward instantly. One pinned Tyler down. The other handed me a tissue.
I wiped the blood off my face, raised my fist, and slammed it right into the bridge of his nose. A loud crack echoed. His nose was broken. Tyler screamed in agony. "Ethan!
How dare you do this to me?!" Before he could finish, my walkietalkie buzzed. "Mr. Miller, she's passing out." I looked up at the monitor. Chloe had indeed fainted.
I checked my watch and let out a soft tut. "That was quick. Give her an injection." The needle pierced Chloe's skin, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Soon, the familiar, heavy breathing filled the room from the speakers again. Tyler's face went pale. "Ethan, you're insane! This is a crime!" "Mr.
Vance, I'm just helping my wife satisfy her physical needs," I replied with a calm smile, though my eyes were dead cold. Tyler shivered, finally realizing how terrifying I could be.
He broke down. "But you can't do this to her! Ethan, no matter what she did, Chloe is still your wife!
If you keep doing this, you're going to kill her!" The groans from the screen continued, but they were now mixed with Chloe's painful cries for mercy.
Seeing that I remained unmoved, Tyler's tone softened. "Ethan, it was my fault. I shouldn't have crashed your marriage.
I shouldn't have humiliated you at your dad's party and ruined your reputation. But Chloe has nothing to do with this. If you want revenge, take it out on me!
Please, let her go!" I looked at Tyler and shook my head. "Mr. Vance, you really do love my wife, don't you?" "But don't worry, I know who to blame. She's the one who cheated.
I won't drag you into this." Two hours later, the voice on the walkietalkie told me that even the drugs weren't keeping her up anymore.
I called it off and led Tyler to the room next door. The moment the door opened, Tyler rushed in. He held Chloe, sobbing loudly. "Chloe, are you okay?
Oh my god, what did he do to you?" Chloe didn't even have the strength to answer. Her eyes were glazed over, and she lay on the floor like a heap of trash. I walked over. "Mr.
Vance, I'm still right here.
Isn't it a bit inappropriate to be so intimate with my wife?" Chloe finally looked up, her gaze filled with murderous hatred. "Ethan Miller, you're a monster." "Let's get a divorce." Chloe had had plenty of lovers before.
Quite a few had dared to flaunt it in my face. And every single time they did, I made sure Chloe paid the price tenfold.
But this was the very first time she asked for a divorce. "No way." I looked Tyler up and down. "Chloe, don't forget. I gave you a chance five years ago.
You refused to divorce me back then, and you even gave my dad a heart attack. Now you want out so you can ride off into the sunset with someone else? Ha, keep dreaming!"
Opening · Chapter 2
It seemed Tyler really was different to Chloe. Before, no matter how I punished her, she would bear it in silence.
But this time, she actually went to the police precinct to file a report against me.
Tyler brought a video clip, claiming I had kidnapped Chloe and drugged her to be assaulted, demanding the cops arrest me.
He gestured wildly and dramatically. "Officer, he's a lawyer! He knows the law and broke it anyway! It's terrifying that a man like him is allowed to practice law.
Lock him up already!" The detective turned to me and asked if it was true. I shook my head. "No, it's all a slanderous lie. He's sleeping with my wife and wanted to force a divorce.
When I refused, they set me up." The detective's look toward Tyler immediately turned into disgust. Tyler panicked. "We have the video! How is that a lie?
I even have a witness!" He made a quick call, and one of the men from that room walked in.
The man admitted he acted on my orders, did those unspeakable things to Chloe, and even produced the syringe. Tyler grinned triumphantly. "We have the witness and the evidence.
Ethan Miller, what do you have to say now?" I said nothing. Instead, I simply pulled out my own evidence. Chloe's Snapchat chat logs planning the hookup with those men.
Surveillance footage of Chloe opening the door for them herself. And the drugs, which were purchased using Chloe's own Amazon account.
Even the hotel room was registered under her name—she booked it regularly.
The evidence proved that Chloe had simply organized a wild gangbang herself, took it too far, and then tried to frame me. Tyler's face turned bright red with rage. "This is forged!
Chloe would never do this!" "Why wouldn't she?" I clutched my chest, playing the heartbroken husband. "Mr. Vance, you really don't know my wife at all. She loves wild parties.
Sigh, you're still young. You should really leave this toxic woman before she ruins you too." My mock advice sounded like pure sarcasm to Tyler.
He screamed hysterically that I had forged the evidence and begged the police to investigate further.
However, no matter how much they investigated, they couldn't find a single shred of proof linking me to the scene.
In the end, the witness even changed his story, presenting a bank transfer record proving Tyler had paid him a hefty sum to give false testimony.
Tyler was so angry his face drained of color. "You liar! You were the one riding her the hardest that day!" He lunged forward to attack the witness.
I stepped in and blocked him. "Mr. Vance, the man was kind enough to testify for you, and now you're assaulting him?
Where are your manners?" Seeing how close I was with the witness, Tyler finally realized. "You're in this together!" No matter how much he threw a fit, the police eventually dismissed the case due to lack of credible evidence.
They told Tyler to come back when he had actual proof and kicked us all out of the precinct.
Right after I sent the witness away, Tyler stomped over and slapped me hard across the face. "Ethan Miller, Chloe stopped loving you a long time ago!
You're still clinging to her like a pathetic leech. Have you no shame?" I'm a man who believes in an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
Before his hand could even drop, I grabbed his hair and slapped him twice, hard. "Am I the shameless one, or is it the sidepiece who projected his own sex tape at an old man's birthday party?" Hearing this, Tyler let out a twisted smirk. "Chloe was right.
Your dad really is your biggest weakness." My heart tightened. "Tyler, I've always believed that cheating is on my wife, which is why I've only ever punished Chloe, not you.
But if you dare touch my father, I will destroy both of you." "Oh?
And how exactly are you going to do that?" Tyler wore a smug, victorious grin. "Ethan, aren't you curious why Chloe isn't here today?" My heart skipped a beat.
Just as I was about to grab his hair again to beat the truth out of him, my phone rang. I answered it, and my entire body went numb.
Opening · Chapter 3
My father had been kicked out of the hospital. By the time I rushed over, he was lying on a gurney in the hallway.
The caregiver, Maria, told me that a woman claiming to be my wife had come to transfer him to another facility.
But the moment the discharge papers were signed, she abandoned my dad in the hallway and vanished. Maria had tried calling me multiple times, but the calls wouldn't go through.
She wanted to talk to the doctors to readmit him, but they insisted that only immediate family members could handle the paperwork. There was no doubt about it. Chloe did this.
Right now, my dad's face was turning purple. I didn't have time to confront Chloe. I ran straight to the doctor's office to get him admitted.
But when I walked in, the doctor shook his head and told me my dad's condition was too severe for them to handle. I lost my temper. "What do you mean too severe?
Last night you told me he was stabilizing and ready for surgery! How can you not take him now?!" The doctor shrunk back, terrified. "Mr. Miller, please calm down.
A patient's condition can fluctuate.
He was fine last night, but it's completely normal for it to take a turn for the worse today." I demanded, "If he was in such a critical state, why did you let someone discharge him in the first place?!" The doctor shrugged. "Your wife insisted on the discharge.
We have to respect the family's decision." After a few exchanges, it was clear as day. Even an idiot could see someone powerful had pulled strings.
Otherwise, no doctor would dare do something so reckless.
I stormed out of the office and called Chloe, demanding to know why she did it. "To teach you a lesson, of course," Chloe said bluntly. "Ethan, Mia was right.
I've been too nice to you, which is why you think you can walk all over me.
You did such horrible things to me; why shouldn't I get even?" I snapped. "If you want revenge, take it out on me! Why target my dad?
Chloe, have you forgotten who took you in when you were literally begging on the streets?!" I couldn't believe Chloe would actually hurt my father.
When she was ten, her family kicked her out. She almost froze to death on the streets in the dead of winter. It was my dad who brought her home and fed her.
At the mention of the past, Chloe seemed to waver.
She muttered, "Fine, then…" "Chloe, are we really just going to let this slide?" Tyler's voice cut in. "Don't forget our actual goal here." Chloe went silent for a few seconds before her voice turned cold again. "Ethan, if you want your dad back in a hospital bed, come sign the divorce papers." "No way!" I roared. "Chloe, five years ago, you put my dad in the hospital.
You promised him then that the only way this marriage ends is if one of us dies!
If I divorce you now, even if my dad wakes up, the shock will kill him!" "What does that have to do with me?" Chloe's words felt like a bucket of ice water poured over my head. "Either you sign, or your dad dies." She hung up.
When I tried calling back, her phone was switched off. I had no time to waste on her. I immediately began trying to transfer my dad to other hospitals.
But after several major hospitals in the city rejected him one after another, my assistant sent me a background check on Tyler.
That was when I finally understood what Chloe meant by "letting him die." Tyler's father was Harrison Vance, the CEO of the country's largest pharmaceutical conglomerate.
They partnered with almost every hospital in the city. Without a doubt, Tyler had blacklisted my father.
My years of experience as a lawyer told me that in front of massive corporate power, ordinary citizens like us were nothing but dust.
Even if they broke the law and we found evidence, they could easily find someone else to take the fall.
Just as despair was swallowing me whole, Maria's panicked voice screamed. "Mr. Miller! Come quick! Your dad stopped breathing!"
Opening · Chapter 4
I rushed to my father's side. Finding no pulse, I jumped onto the gurney and began performing CPR. Maria ran to get a doctor.
Perhaps the doctors still had a shred of conscience left. Or perhaps they realized that having a patient die right at their doorstep would cause a massive PR nightmare.
Two doctors quickly ran over and managed to resuscitate my dad.
After they stabilized him, one of the doctors pulled me aside and whispered that even though he was brought back, if he wasn't admitted immediately, he wouldn't survive another eight hours.
I knew exactly what I had to do. I left my dad with Maria and went to find Chloe. She was with Tyler. She was sitting on his lap, feeding him grapes.
I slammed the divorce papers onto the coffee table in front of her. "Chloe, I'll sign." Chloe glanced at me, suddenly looking tense as she stood up. "Ethan… have you been crying?" I spat at her, "Cut the act.
Isn't this exactly what you wanted?" Chloe frowned but said nothing. She picked up the pen and signed her name. Once she was done, she looked at me. "Ethan, we can still be friends.
Once your dad… once your dad is discharged, I can still put on a show with you if you need to keep him happy." "Save it.
I'd rather die than be friends with a piece of trash like you." I leaned down, signed the papers, and threw them in her face. "We are done.
Now get my dad into a hospital!" Chloe turned to Tyler. "Tyler, call the hospital." To my shock, Tyler just smirked. "Who said divorcing him meant I'd let his dad get treated?" I froze. "You just promised me…" "She promised you, not me." Tyler stood up and tapped my cheek mockingly. "Ethan Miller, aren't you supposed to be this big, badass lawyer?
How come you can't even handle a simple thing like this?" I stared at Tyler with pure hatred. "What do you want to let my father go?" Tyler chuckled. "Simple.
Strip naked, go out onto the street, kneel, and beg. Shout out loud that you are a shameless piece of trash who seduces married women.
Do that a hundred times, and I'll let your dad have a bed." The air in the room froze. Chloe looked like she wanted to say something, but Tyler silenced her with a single glare.
I took a deep breath. "Fine." The smirk on Tyler's face widened. "Wow, Ethan.
You really are a dutiful son." While he was basking in his triumph, I suddenly grabbed the fruit knife from the coffee table, lunged forward, and grabbed Chloe.
The cold blade was instantly pressed against her carotid artery. Tyler panicked instantly. "Ethan, you're crazy!"
