Opening · Chapter 1
On the day my wife gave birth to the child of her imprisoned high school sweetheart, her entire family was on high alert.
They treated me like public enemy number one, terrified I would show up and ruin their perfect moment. But I never showed up, not even when she went into difficult labor.
When Chloe was finally wheeled out of the delivery room, her eyes instinctively searched the crowded hallway, looking for me. "Chloe, don’t worry," Eleanor, her mother, said, patting her own chest reassurringly. "We’ve made sure of it.
That loser Liam won’t be coming." "Yeah, I was so worried his bad vibes would ruin my nephew’s luck," Jordan, Chloe's brother, chimed in. Chloe nodded.
She turned her head to look at the newborn sleeping beside her, a triumphant smile spreading across her pale face. She never understood why I couldn't just accept this.
In her mind, she was just trying to make sure Tyler didn't have any regrets before he went to prison.
She had even convinced herself that if I treated the baby well, she would graciously allow me to stay in her life and help raise him. She had no idea that I was already packing.
I was leaving for the Interpol General Secretariat in Lyon, France, to lead a massive international joint task force. Once I stepped onto that plane, there was no turning back.
Chloe suffered a severe hemorrhage during delivery.
Yet, less than a week after being admitted to the hospital, Tyler’s mother, Brenda, was already nagging her to pack up and finish her postpartum recovery at home to save money.
Meanwhile, I had been locked in a highsecurity tactical briefing at headquarters for a month, working on a major transnational case. Today was my first day off.
I dragged my exhausted body back to our suburban home. The moment I stepped through the front door, the atmosphere turned freezing cold.
In the living room, Eleanor and Richard were huddled around Chloe and the baby, their faces filled with warmth and affection. Brenda was sitting right next to them.
The five of them looked like a perfect, happy family. I was the only outsider. "Oh, look at my sweet little angel! Yes, you are!
Call me Grandma, sweetheart!" Eleanor cooed, her eyes practically sparkling with joy.
When they finally noticed me standing in the entryway, the smiles froze on their faces, replaced by awkward tension. Chloe was pale and completely drained of color.
She gave me a cold, indifferent glance before looking back down to play with the baby. "Unbelievable. Of all the times to show up, he shows up now.
What a buzzkill," Richard sneered. He lit a cigarette, leaning back on the sofa, and eyed me up and down with pure disgust.
Looking at them, I could hardly believe these were the same people who had begged me to marry Chloe. Before our wedding, they had called me the perfect soninlaw.
Once, Chloe and I actually had something pure. I went to the police academy right out of high school, and she was studying education at the college next door.
That was where our lives aligned. We met, fell in love, and got married without any drama. I was always the quiet, stoic type.
Chloe, on the other hand, was like a vibrant, cheerful songbird. After my parents died in the line of duty, I rarely let myself feel strong emotions.
Chloe had been the single beam of light in my dark, quiet world. Our wedding was perfect.
Her parents used to boast about my respectable career as a federal agent, praising my stability. We were happy.
But when it came to intimacy, Chloe had always been incredibly reserved and resistant. Because I loved and respected her, I never pushed. We lived in a sexless marriage for years.
I never suspected a thing. I thought we were just deeply, spiritually connected. Besides, my job kept me in the field for long stretches.
I assumed our marriage was just built on a different kind of bond.
Then, I was selected for an elite, closedoff federal training program in preparation for a major international joint operation.
It required me to go completely off the grid for six months. Before I left, Chloe had tears in her eyes.
She held my hand tightly. "You have to come back to me safely," she sobbed. "I'll be waiting for you." I gently wiped her tears, my heart aching.
Eleanor had also wept, grabbing my sleeve and begging me to stay safe. At that moment, I had already decided that after this training, I would apply for a desk job.
I wanted to give up the dangerous field operations and just protect my family. During those six months of grueling training, not a single day went by without me thinking of Chloe.
Sometimes, I was so distracted it was dangerous. On the final day of training, I drove home as fast as the speed limit allowed, my heart racing with excitement.
But when I unlocked the front door, the scene before me made my blood run cold. In the dining room, Chloe was sitting at the table eating dinner with a strange man.
The man had his arm draped intimately over her shoulder. When they saw me, both of them froze.
Chloe frantically pushed his hand away, her face turning a ghostly white. "Who is he?" My voice was dead silent. I didn't even put down my duffel bag.
My eyes were locked onto the man. Chloe looked away, stammering, "This... this is Tyler. He’s just an old friend from college.
He’s... staying with us for a few days." The smiles on Eleanor and Richard's faces vanished instantly.
Richard frowned, looking at me with pure annoyance. "Why are you back so early?" Richard snapped. Eleanor muttered under her breath, "Useless cop.
Couldn't you have just stayed out in the field? What a buzzkill." Tyler stood up, giving me a smug, arrogant smirk. I didn't ask any more questions.
But as my eyes swept over Chloe, I noticed her hand was instinctively resting on her stomach. Her belly was slightly rounded. She was clearly showing.
My heart sank into a dark, bottomless abyss. A sickening realization washed over me. That night, Chloe brought a glass of warm milk to my study.
She forced a sweet smile. "You've been training so hard, Liam. You must be exhausted.
Drink some milk and get some sleep." I took the glass, but I didn't miss the flicker of anxiety in her eyes.
I set the glass aside, pretending to take a few sips when she wasn't looking. Sure enough, around midnight, Chloe slipped out of bed and crept out of the room.
I followed her silently in the shadows. She walked into the guest room down the hall.
Through the cracked door, I heard Tyler's muffled voice. "Babe, what took you so long?" Rage flared in my chest.
I drew closer, only to hear Chloe’s playful, breathless giggle. "Gentle... be careful of the baby." It felt like a sledgehammer to my chest. The truth was laid bare.
All this time, she had refused to let me touch her. Yet the moment I was gone, she had crawled into another man's bed and gotten pregnant.
Opening · Chapter 2
I forced myself to swallow the burning rage, deciding to bide my time and observe them.
Over the next few weeks, they became completely shameless, treating me like a ghost in my own home.
During the day, Tyler would sit right next to Chloe, their fingers intertwined, exchanging loving glances.
One night, while the entire family was gathered at the dinner table, Tyler actually picked up a piece of steak with his fork and fed it directly to Chloe.
Chloe didn't even hesitate. She ate it, giggling as she used a napkin to gently wipe a bit of sauce from the corner of Tyler's mouth.
Richard, Eleanor, and Tyler's mother acted as if this was completely normal.
Whenever I tried to bring it up, my inlaws would shut me down, claiming they were "just close friends" and blaming me for never being home.
They claimed Tyler had been the one stepping up to take care of the household while I was away. They called me ungrateful.
Out of sheer guilt for my constant absence, I had tolerated it. But this time, the sheer disrespect snapped something inside me. I slammed my fork onto the table. "Chloe!
What the hell is this?" "Are 'friends' supposed to act like this? Do 'friends' sleep in the same bed?" "You're pregnant, Chloe!
I've stayed quiet for months, and you’re still trying to play me for a fool?" Realizing the jig was up, Richard slammed his fist on the table and stood up, pointing a finger at my face. "Lower your voice!
Look at yourself—all you do is obsess over your pathetic little job. How much do you even make?" "Can you give Chloe the life she deserves? Tyler can give her everything.
Can you?" Eleanor chimed in, "Exactly! You're a nobody. After all these years, Chloe hasn't gotten a single luxury from you." "Tyler is ten times the man you are.
He knows how to treat a woman, and he actually makes real money." My hands shook with rage as I glared at them. "Are you all seriously standing there telling me these lies?" "Do you not see how much I've sacrificed for this family?
And now you're teaming up with an interloper to lecture me?" "Sacrificed?
You call that a sacrifice?" Richard laughed coldly. "Tyler makes more in a single business deal than you make in a year." "You don't even compare to him.
Chloe marrying you was the biggest mistake of her life!" Richard's words were like poisoned daggers piercing my heart.
I let out a cold, bitter laugh, turning my gaze to Eleanor. "So you're all perfectly fine with raising this bastard child?" "Your daughter cheated on me, and you're standing here defending her?" Eleanor’s face darkened instantly. "Don't you dare call my grandchild that!" "This child is Chloe’s flesh and blood.
He is family, and we are keeping him, no matter what." Chloe stood up, opening her mouth to speak, but she was cut off by a loud, sudden knock on the front door.
Seconds later, a squad of local police officers burst into the house. They weren't federal agents, so I didn't recognize them.
They flashed their badges, tackled Tyler to the ground, and cuffed him. As Tyler was dragged toward the door, his smugness evaporated into pure terror.
He thrashed and screamed, "Why are you arresting me?!" "It was you! You set me up, you bastard!" Chloe panicked, screaming at me, "Did you do this?!" "How could you be so cruel?
If anything happens to him, I will never forgive you!" Richard and Eleanor went ballistic.
Richard lunged at me, his finger practically poking my eye. "You psychotic piece of garbage!
You actually used your badge to lock up Tyler!" "If he goes down, we will destroy you!" Eleanor wailed, "You heartless monster! How could you do something so wicked?
Call your friends and get Tyler released right now, or Chloe and the baby are finished!" The lead officer stepped in, his voice cold and stern. "Tyler Brooks is under arrest for international wire fraud and running offshore cryptocurrency scams.
We have solid evidence." Hearing this, Chloe froze, a look of utter disbelief washing over her face. But Richard and Eleanor refused to back down.
Richard screamed at the officers, "You have the wrong guy! Tyler is a good boy. He would never do that! Someone framed him!" Eleanor nodded frantically. "Yes!
Someone must have set him up! You can't just lock up an innocent man!" I pulled out my federal credentials.
The lead officer saw the gold badge and my agency's acronym on my tactical bag. He immediately straightened up and saluted me.
After a quick exchange, I learned that Tyler had been under investigation for months. He had defrauded victims of millions of dollars. The case was airtight.
I tried to calm Chloe and her parents down. But Chloe threw herself at me, scratching and hitting my chest like a wild animal. "You're lying! Tyler is a good man!
You're just jealous of him, so you framed him!" "If you don't get him out, I will hate you for the rest of my life!" Richard was shaking with fury. "Don't play the hero here, Liam.
You just can't stand to see Chloe happy." "If you don't pull some strings to get Tyler out, I will go to your headquarters and protest.
I'll get you fired!" Eleanor joined in, "That's right! You ungrateful bastard, Chloe was blind to marry you.
If you don't fix this, we'll make your life a living hell!" Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
It was an urgent dispatch from headquarters, ordering me to report for an emergency deployment briefing. I walked out, leaving their screams behind.
Looking back at Chloe as she held the baby in the present day, I remained completely silent.
Opening · Chapter 3
Chloe didn't even look up at me. She gave me a look of pure disgust. "In a few days, you're going to my high school reunion with me. You’ll act as my bodyguard.
Look at you—you're burnt to a crisp from your training. You look like a charcoal briquette.
It's embarrassing to be seen with you." Getting sunburned and calloused was just part of federal training. I looked at Chloe, unable to believe how shameless she could be.
But to make her see reality, and to put a clean end to this dead marriage, I simply nodded in silence. On the day of the reunion, Chloe dressed up in expensive designer clothes.
Holding the baby, she looked at me with deep irritation. "Keep up. Don't embarrass me," she snapped. "Remember, once we're inside, you're just my security detail.
Keep your mouth shut." "You should be grateful I’m even letting you tag along." I said nothing, keeping my face completely blank.
But inside, a storm was brewing as I followed her into the highend venue. The moment we walked through the doors, her former classmates turned to look at her.
Seeing her holding a beautiful baby and dressed in luxury, their eyes filled with curiosity and envy. A woman walked up to us first. "Chloe! Oh my god, it's been years!
Look at you, you look amazing! And the baby is so cute. Where's the dad?" Chloe smirked, her face glowing with vanity.
She lowered her voice just enough so the surrounding crowd could hear. "Oh, his dad is really busy with his business, so he couldn't make it." "But you all know him—it's Tyler Brooks.
He’s in finance. He’s quite successful." The crowd gasped, immediately showering her with compliments. "Wow, Chloe! You really hit the jackpot!" "Seriously, you married into wealth!
Don't forget about us little people!" Chloe soaked up the attention, her head held high, looking down on her old peers with subtle contempt. "Well, you guys just need to work harder," Chloe said, her voice dripping with condescension. "Some of us just get lucky.
But honestly, some people are just destined to stay at the bottom, no matter how hard they try." Just as she reached the peak of her arrogance, phone alerts started chiming all around the room.
Confused, her classmates pulled out their phones. Slowly, the color drained from their faces, and their expressions turned deeply uncomfortable. Chloe noticed the shift.
She frowned. "What's going on?" No one answered. They just stared at her with a mix of disgust and pity. I smiled to myself. I knew exactly what was happening.
I had anonymously leaked the evidence of her affair to their alumni Snapchat group.
The photos, the hotel checkins, the explicit text messages—everything was laid bare on their screens. Finally, one classmate couldn't hold back. "Chloe... what is this?
Are these photos real?" Chloe’s face turned paperwhite. Her lips trembled, and her eyes darted around the room in terror. She shrieked, "This is a setup! It's fake!
It’s all fake!" But the whispers only grew louder. "I can't believe she’s like this..." "She acts so sweet, but she’s just a cheap cheater..." "Disgusting.
And she was just bragging about her rich husband..." I looked at Chloe and spoke in a calm, clear voice. "I think everyone here would love to know who the real father of that baby is, and who your legal husband actually is.
But I won't waste my breath. Good luck, Chloe." With that, I pulled the divorce papers from my jacket and slammed them onto the table in front of her.
Chloe’s eyes turned bloodshot with rage.
Like a rabid animal, she lunged at me, screaming, "You ruined my life, you bastard!" Richard and Eleanor, who had been waiting nearby in the lobby, heard the commotion and rushed into the room.
Richard swung a fist at me, while Eleanor clawed at my face, screaming profanities. "You ungrateful piece of trash! How dare you humiliate Chloe!
We'll kill you!" But before their hands could touch me, the heavy double doors of the venue were kicked open with a loud bang.
My tactical team and my junior agents poured into the room. "I’d love to see who has the balls to touch Agent Vance!" Zack roared, leading the charge.
