Opening · Chapter 1
Claire was my wife, and she had all the right looks and curves. She rose through the company fast after joining, and three years ago she went overseas on business.
She said, “Three years for a million bucks.
By the time I come back, we’ll be living a good life.” Today was the day she returned to the country, so I took the day off to pick her up.
When I got to the airport, I saw her figure from a distance. We hadn’t seen each other in three years, and my wife had filled out a little, but that was actually perfect.
I waved at her, and then I saw a woman in her fifties beside her, holding a child.
When I walked closer, my wife took the child into her arms, and I froze, then thought she must just be helping out—what a kind, beautiful woman. “Babe!” I couldn’t help shouting.
My wife slowly came over, and when she saw me, she handed the child to the older woman beside her. “Take him to the car first and wait for me.” The child started crying for her, and the older woman coaxed him, “Don’t cry, don’t cry.
Mommy will be here in a bit!” At that, I froze. Mommy? I looked at Claire. “What did she just say?
Mommy?” Claire said in a low voice, “Ethan, let’s talk.” She walked off to the side, and I hurried after her without thinking.
Only when I got close did I notice a milky scent on her, and her body shape looked a lot like a mother’s too. “Claire, what’s going on with that kid?” “Don’t tell me you went abroad for three years and had a baby!” Claire’s face was cold. “You saw it yourself.
I don’t want to hide it from you. The child is mine, but I’ll give you an explanation.” “You go back first. After I’m done with work, I’ll contact you.
That’s it!” Without giving me a chance to say anything, she turned and left. I was stunned, and it took me a long time to process it before I rushed after her.
But then I saw Ryan holding her in his arms as they got into the Mercedes parked at the entrance. Ryan! My heart sank.
Three years ago, Ryan had also gone abroad on business, and before he left, I even sent a bunch of expensive gifts over, asking him to look after Claire.
So that was how he’d been looking after her—right into bed! I clenched my fists and drove straight back to the company.
Since she was bringing a child with her, Claire was definitely going home first, and I didn’t care which home that was, because it wasn’t mine!
With red eyes, I stormed back to the office and overheard a few people gossiping in the break room. “Claire gets promoted as soon as she comes back this time.
Gotta say, pretty women really do move up faster!” “It’s all because having a kid gives her leverage.
She had Ryan’s son, and since he can’t give her the name of a proper wife, he has to give her some kind of explanation!” “Ethan’s the real one taking this well.
He’s eating soft food without even feeling embarrassed, treating his wife like a surrogate!” Hearing them made me feel like I’d fallen into an ice cave.
They all knew Claire had gone abroad with Ryan, and they’d been hiding it from me!
I had become a damn fool, kept in the dark while still joking around with them about missing my wife.
I had once told Claire I wanted to fly out and see her, but she used the excuse that it wouldn’t be convenient, that a round trip would take over a week, waste time and money, and it wasn’t necessary.
She lectured me sincerely, “Ethan, I’m doing all this for our little family. Can’t you just bear with it?” Bear with it?
I did bear with it for three years and never went looking for her, but this was what I got in return.
Thinking about it, I coughed lightly, and the few people inside turned around and saw me, their faces instantly awkward. “Ethan, yyou’re here for coffee too?” “Yeah, and to listen to you gossip by the way.” I replied with a fake smile, and one of them mustered the nerve to say, “Ethan, honestly, this isn’t that big a deal.
Other people don’t even get a chance like this!” “Not like you. You’ve still been earning your salary all these years, while your wife makes big money outside.
When she comes back, she might even be a director!” “How does it feel? Got any tips to share?”
Opening · Chapter 2
He looked at me with bad intentions. I knew he’d long been unhappy being in my team, and every day he did nothing but slack off.
But he was good at kissing up, and when Team Two wanted him, I had planned to transfer him over by the end of the month. Now that I thought about it, I didn’t need him anymore.
He should leave as soon as possible. But before he left, I was going to give him a lesson. I smiled and looked at the man who’d spoken. “You’re a grown man, but you’re this nosy.
You really do have the potential to be a busybody.” “Tell you what, I actually do have a shortcut. Want to take it?” I hooked a finger at him, and he leaned closer.
I held back my anger and said in a low voice by his ear, “You can also take off your own pants and sell yourself.” “What did you say?” I spread my hands. “Didn’t you ask me to teach you my experience?
Why can’t you take a compliment?” “Ethan, you’re really getting bold now. You’ve been eating off your wife and still acting righteous.
Sure, the kid isn’t yours, but the wife is still yours! Once Ryan gets sent to headquarters, you can have your wife give birth to another one.
You won’t lose out!” The people around burst into laughter, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I rushed over and punched him, then pinned him to the floor and beat him!
That skinny frame of his was no match for my fists. He kept begging and screaming, and at first the coworkers around us were still watching the joke.
But later, when they saw I was really going after him like I meant to kill him, they all rushed in and pulled us apart. I shook my fist. “So who exactly is eating soft food?
You little loser!” “Ethan, I’m calling the cops!” “Go ahead!” At that moment, Ryan arrived. “What the hell is going on? What cops?” “Mr. Grant, Ethan hit me.
Look at what he did to me!” Ryan stared at me. “Ethan, what is wrong with you? This is the company, not a marketplace!” “You assaulted a coworker.
Your performance this month is getting docked!” At that, Ben sneered, “Ethan, I won’t make a bigger issue out of this.
Pay me fifty grand and we’re done.” “Fine, then let’s call the police. You’ve got a filthy mouth, and I recorded everything just now.
If I put this out there later, nobody gets to come out clean!” Ben immediately looked like he was about to explode, but Ryan stopped him. “That’s enough! Everyone, disperse.
Adults need to take responsibility for their own actions.
Ben, come with me!” Ben followed him off, furious, and I coldly glanced around before saying, “If anyone dares to keep running their mouth behind my back, this is what happens!” “Ethan, aren’t you afraid of getting fired?” “Yeah, why are you being so arrogant?” I didn’t care. “What’s there to be afraid of?
Worst case, I just find another job. I’m not scared. Are you? Can you guarantee you’ll find work in this kind of market?” At once, they all shut up. I wasn’t bragging.
I had the skills to back it up. Honestly, if Claire hadn’t insisted on coming to this company, I would never have come here.
For five years, my performance in the company had been obvious to everyone, and Claire knew exactly how she’d gotten her position as deputy manager.
But after a while, she really seemed to think it was all thanks to her own ability. No rush. I wanted to see exactly what they were thinking.
By the time Ben came out, half an hour had passed. The HR manager was right beside him, watching him pack up and leave, and that surprised me a little. “Everyone listen up.
From now on, anyone who insults people or starts trouble in the company without reason will be fired immediately!” “Ben is the example!” As soon as he finished speaking, everyone looked at me, and my heart sank.
They had done that on purpose! When Ben passed me, he snorted coldly. “Ethan, you damn sellout. Trading your wife for glory—I look down on you!”
Opening · Chapter 3
I sneered and said nothing, just watched him leave, then turned to Ryan’s office. This bastard was clearly setting me up to take the fall.
I immediately headed for his office, but the HR manager stopped me. “Hold on. Mr. Grant is in a video meeting.
You can’t go in.” I looked at him. “I just beat Ben and walked away clean. So tell me, if I beat you up right now, will Ryan fix you or fire me?” The HR manager froze at once.
He didn’t dare stop me, and I was about to go in when Ryan came out. Seeing me standing at the door, he looked a little unhappy. “What do you need?” “Mr.
Grant, you sure do have a bad memory. Didn’t you say you’d give me an explanation?” “Or are you planning to talk to me here?” Ryan thought for a moment. “Let’s talk outside.
Come with me.” He motioned for me to follow. I watched Ryan’s brows tighten, then I stepped after him.
Once we got to the underground parking garage and got into the car, Ryan handed me an envelope. I squeezed it.
It was about ten thousand dollars. “What’s this supposed to mean?” “Ethan, take the money, keep doing your job properly, and don’t make a scene about this.” “Keep doing my job properly?
You screwed my wife and still want me to keep working like nothing happened!” I grabbed his collar. “Tell me clearly—when did this start?” Ryan’s face turned dark. “I don’t need to go into the details.
Besides this, there’s also a bank card. Three million total. A million a year, and you’re not exactly losing out.” “I’m giving you three days, Ethan. That’s all I’m offering.
Delay a day, and it goes down by a million!” I was furious and about to say more, but he pressed me down. “Think carefully before you speak to me.” “After all, I’m the one calling the shots in this company now.
If you don’t agree, fine. If this gets out later, crushing you will be no trouble at all!” He was threatening me! I snorted coldly and slapped him hard!
Then I dragged him right out and started beating him! Ryan was seven or eight years older than me and half a head taller, but he was all show and no substance.
He was no match for me at all! Soon I had him pinned against the hood of the car. He roared in rage, “Ethan, you damn well dare to hit me?
I’ll kill you!” I drove my knee up, and his face went instantly pale from the pain.
I grabbed his throat and roared, “Ryan, you damn well dared to touch my wife!” The next second, I was flipped over by a huge force, and security arrived, pressing me down onto the ground.
Ryan got back up when he had the chance, furious and panicked. “Call the police! Call them now!” “Don’t call the police!” It was Claire. She came over from the emergency exit.
Only then did I realize she’d been there the whole time! “Let him go. I need to talk to him.” Ryan waved a hand and got back into the car.
The security guards let me go, but they stood not far away, ready to rush in at any moment. My eyes were red as I looked at her. “You told me you were forced into this.
As long as you say the word, I’ll get justice for you!” Claire was impatient. “Stop being stupid.
Ethan, let’s just split up peacefully!” I looked at her, and suddenly a nameless rage surged up in me. “Claire, we’ve only been married for four years!
You cheated for three of them!” “You think you deserve me!” Claire was perfectly calm, though. “Should I say you’re stupid, or naive?
When has the company ever assigned overseas business to a newbie like me?” The company had a rule that overseas assignments were only for men.
When Claire was chosen back then, I really had been shocked. But Claire said she was capable enough. Even if it went against the rule, they’d make an exception for her.
Now she was actually using that to mock my innocence. She glanced at her phone, and the screen showed a photo of their family of three.
How ironic! “Ethan, you can’t give me what I want. Let’s get divorced!”
