Opening · Chapter 1
In the third year of our marriage, I found a Snapchat group on my husband's phone called "The Happy Family." There were only three people in it: him, my best friend, and his mother.
I wasn't in it. The latest message was from my motherinlaw, Beatrice: "Just hang in there a bit longer.
Once she has the baby and the house title is officially transferred to your name, we'll have Maya move in." "We can let them live together first." I froze in the bathroom, the toilet brush slipping from my hand and clattering onto the floor.
Before I could even process it, my threeyearold son, Leo, ran over and tugged at my jeans. "Mommy, stop cleaning." He pointed toward his dad's phone screen and said in his sweet, childish voice, "Daddy said this house belongs to Auntie Maya now.
You and I have to move into a tiny apartment." I knelt down, looking at his serious little face. "Who told you that, sweetie?" "Daddy and Grandma.
They thought I was asleep." Leo leaned closer to me, whispering like he was sharing the biggest secret in the world. "Mommy, I also heard Daddy say that once the new baby is born, he's going to make you leave." "But Mommy, you don't have a baby in your tummy." The blood in my veins ran icecold.
No, I didn't have a baby in my tummy. But my best friend, Maya Miller, had just announced her pregnancy last month.
That night, I bathed Leo and put him to bed just like any other day. My husband, Ethan Carter, was working late again. I was used to it.
Over our three years of marriage, he had climbed from a regular sales representative to a regional director.
Meanwhile, to take care of our son, I had quit my decent job and become a stayathome mom. My motherinlaw, Beatrice, had moved in last month to "help" with the baby.
But ever since she arrived, the atmosphere in the house had completely shifted. Before, Ethan would occasionally help with the dishes.
Now, the moment he walked through the door, he would just crash on the couch. "My mom said I work hard at the office.
You shouldn't make me do chores." Before, he used to give me his paycheck card. Now, he only transferred a fixed monthly allowance for groceries. "My mom said we need to save money.
It shouldn't all be in your hands." I hadn't thought much of it at the time. After all, he was Leo's father, and the monthly allowance was enough to cover our expenses.
And with his mother around, my workload had indeed gotten a bit lighter. But I never expected that this peace would come with such a devastating price.
That afternoon, Beatrice took Leo downstairs to the playground and told me to change the sheets in the master bedroom.
While I was looking for fresh sheets in the closet, I accidentally knocked over a manila folder. A piece of paper slipped out.
I picked it up and realized it was a home purchase agreement. The buyer's name was Ethan Carter. The purchase date was three months ago—on my birthday.
That day, he had told me his company was hosting a teambuilding retreat and that he would be out of town for two days. I had believed him.
The contract was for a threebedroom apartment in the most expensive neighborhood in the city. The down payment was $80,000. I had always managed our family savings.
Three months ago, a large chunk of money had indeed gone missing from our joint account.
Ethan told me he had lent it to his brother for a temporary business emergency and that it would be paid back in two months. And I had believed him again.
My hands began to shake violently as I held the contract. Not because of the $80,000. But because on the very last page of the contract, there was another signature.
Cobuyer: Maya Miller. Maya Miller. My college classmate. My best friend. We had known each other for ten years.
She came over to our place for dinner all the time, and my son called her Auntie Maya.
She posted photos of Leo on her Instagram with captions like "My favorite little man." Last month, she told me she was pregnant, claiming the father was a jerk who had abandoned her.
I had comforted her and even transferred her $500 to help her out. I slumped against the closet, my mind buzzing with a deafening ring. No.
If she was just pregnant with some random guy's baby, why would she buy a house with Ethan? Why was her name on the contract?
Taking a deep breath, I put the contract back into the folder and slid it exactly where it had been.
Then, I pulled out my phone and sent Maya a Snapchat message. "Maya, how are you doing?
Is the morning sickness any better?" She replied almost instantly. "Much better, but it's a bit scary living alone." "Why don't you come stay with me for a few days?
I can keep you company," I typed, my fingers steady. "Really? That would be amazing! I'll come over tomorrow!" I locked my screen and stared up at the chandelier.
Ethan had replaced it last year, saying he wanted to make me happy. Now, as I looked at it, it felt like an eye.
An eye that had seen the ugly truth long ago but had chosen to remain silent.
Opening · Chapter 2
The next day, Maya arrived. She wore a loose floral dress, her baby bump barely showing.
When Beatrice opened the door, the smile on her face looked completely foreign to me. "Maya, sweetie! Come in, come in!
I made some chicken soup for you." She had never shown that kind of warmth to me. Not once. I stood by the kitchen door, watching Beatrice place the soup on the table.
Maya sat on the couch, and Leo was leaning against her knee. "Auntie Maya, when is the baby sister coming out?" Maya frowned slightly. "It's a baby brother! Soon, sweetie.
And then he can play with you, okay?" "Okay!" Ethan got home around seven in the evening.
The first thing he did when he walked in wasn't to look at me, nor was it to look at our son. He looked straight at Maya.
He paused while kicking off his shoes, his lips parting into an involuntary smile. I had seen that look before, three years ago.
That was the exact way he used to look at me when he was pursuing me. "Maya's here?" he asked, keeping his voice deliberately casual. "Yeah, Chloe invited me to stay for a few days," Maya replied, looking up with a sweet smile.
Their eyes locked for a split second. It was brief. But I saw it. Beatrice walked out of the kitchen with a dish.
Seeing me standing still, she frowned. "Chloe, what are you standing there for? Go serve the food." "Maya is a guest.
You can't expect our guest to do the work." I glanced at Beatrice, took a deep breath, and walked into the kitchen.
As I was plating the food, I heard laughter coming from the living room. My son was crying out, "Daddy, hold me!" but he got no response.
Instead, Maya said with a mix of pride and mock shyness, "Careful, don't bump into my tummy." Ethan’s voice was low and teasing. "I know, I'll be careful from now on." Finding it boring in the living room, Leo ran into the kitchen four or five times.
I ended up putting most of the BBQ ribs onto a plate and letting him eat them right there in the kitchen. I left only a small bowl of ribs to bring to the dining table.
It was a decent dinner, but Beatrice's eyes widened when she saw the small portion of ribs. She tapped her fork against the table aggressively. "I bought three pounds of ribs!
How is there only this much on the table?" I didn't look at her as I set down the dishes. "Too much food would just go to waste." Giving it to them would be a waste.
Beatrice was about to snap, but Maya cut in quickly. "She's right, Beatrice. There are only five of us. Cooking too much is just wasteful." After she spoke, she winked at me.
As if we were still the best friends we used to be. My skin crawled, and a wave of goosebumps broke out over my arms. Beatrice kept quiet, but she still glared at me.
I set the last of the plates down. Beatrice sat next to Maya, putting food onto her plate.
Ethan sat across from Maya, eating while staring at his phone, though his eyes kept drifting toward her.
I sat in the corner, peeling shrimp for my son. "Mommy, you eat too," Leo said, placing a rib into my bowl. "Thanks, sweetie.
Mommy will eat." I stared at the rib in my bowl, suddenly feeling a wave of nausea. Because the three people sitting across from me were putting on such a pathetic show.
Their acting was so terrible; it felt like they weren't even trying to hide it from me anymore. They were just waiting for me to lose my mind and confront them.
After dinner, Ethan did something highly unusual. He turned to me and said, "Chloe, why don't you go chat with Maya? I'll do the dishes." Beatrice immediately chimed in. "Yes, yes!
Go sit with Maya. Your husband and I will clean up." Their sudden kindness made me feel even more disgusted. In all our years of marriage, when had Ethan ever washed a single dish?
Beatrice had always firmly believed that men belonged outside the kitchen. Even when I was recovering from childbirth, she would make me wash the dishes myself. I didn't argue.
I threw my apron aside and walked over to Maya. I wanted to see what my dear "best friend" had planned next. I joined Maya on the balcony.
She leaned back in the lounge chair, rubbing her stomach with a satisfied smile. "Chloe, what am I going to do?
Being pregnant and unmarried... my baby won't have a father." "He will," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "Really?
You think so?" She turned to look at me, her eyes lighting up. "Yes. You've already chosen one." She froze.
I looked straight into her eyes, pronouncing every single word clearly. "The house you and Ethan bought... when are you planning to move in?"
Opening · Chapter 3
Her smile vanished instantly. The sliding glass door to the balcony was pulled open from the inside.
Ethan walked out holding a fruit platter, a smile plastered on his face. "What are you guys talking about?
Have some fruit." But when he noticed Maya's pale face, his smile faltered.
He looked at me, his eyes instantly turning cold. "Chloe, what did you say to her?" I stood up and faced him. "Nothing much.
I just asked her when the two of you are planning to move into your new house." The fruit platter in Ethan's hand wobbled, and a few grapes rolled onto the floor.
His face drained of color, turning from pale to a dark, angry red. "Did you go through my things?" "If I hadn't, how long were you planning on keeping this from me?" "Keeping what from you?" Beatrice rushed out of the kitchen, her apron still tied around her waist. "My son supports this entire family!
He supports you!
Who gave you the right to go through his things?" She pointed a finger directly at my face, her voice screeching like nails on a chalkboard. "Let me tell you something, Chloe Davis!
Everything in this house belongs to my son!
He can give it to whoever he wants!" "If you don't like it, pack your bags and leave!" Leo ran out of his room, throwing his little arms around my leg. "Grandma, don't yell at Mommy..." "Go back to your room!" Beatrice grabbed Leo, shoved him back into his bedroom, and locked the door from the outside. "Mom, why did you lock the door?" Ethan frowned. "Let him hear what kind of mother he has!
Living off my son, and she dares to snoop through his files!" I ignored Beatrice and kept my eyes fixed on Ethan. "That house.
The $80,000 down payment was our entire life savings." "I saved that money penny by penny, pinching pennies since the day I got pregnant." "You used it to buy a house and put her name on it.
Did you even think about me?" Ethan's expression was incredibly ugly. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Chloe, I can explain." "Explain what?" Maya suddenly stood up.
The panicked look on her face was gone, replaced by a cold, arrogant smirk. "Chloe, do you really think you're some kind of prize?" She crossed her arms and sneered. "Ethan stopped loving you a long time ago.
Didn't you know?" "You stopped taking care of yourself the moment you got pregnant.
You gained thirty pounds after giving birth and never even lost it." "What can you do besides babysit? Have you made a single dime for this family?" "This house belongs to Ethan.
He can let whoever he wants live here. It's none of your business!" I watched her lips move, feeling completely detached.
Was this really the same Maya who had cried at my wedding, promising she'd be the first to defend me if I ever felt mistreated?
Was this the same Maya who had stayed up all night in the hospital hallway when I suffered a severe postpartum hemorrhage?
As she spat those words at me, there wasn't a single shred of guilt in her eyes.
It was as if she were the rightful wife and I was the intruder. "Do you hear her?" Beatrice raised her chin triumphantly. "Maya is younger, prettier, and smarter than you." "And she's pregnant with a baby boy.
What did you give us? A clingy little brat who only knows how to cry!" My threeyearold son was locked in his room, sobbing hysterically. "Mommy...
Mommy..." Hearing his cries felt like someone was squeezing my heart. "Open the door," I said, staring at Ethan. "He's just a baby.
Don't scare him." "Scare him?" Before Ethan could speak, Beatrice exploded again. "Your kid cries a little and you can't handle it?
Maya is standing here pregnant, and you're stressing her out. Why don't you care about that?" "Mom, shut up for a second," Ethan finally spoke.
He shot his mother a warning look, then turned to me. "Chloe, go to your room. Calm down." Calm down. He wanted me to calm down.
He had stolen all our savings to buy a house for his mistress. The mistress was standing in my home, screaming in my face. He had locked our crying son in a bedroom.
And he wanted me to calm down?!
Opening · Chapter 4
I didn't move. "You're not going to your room?" Ethan's face darkened completely. "Fine. Then figure it out yourself." He turned and took Maya's hand. "Come on, Maya.
I'll take you to the guest room to rest." Maya leaned gently against his shoulder.
As she passed by me, she leaned in. "Chloe, if you have any decency left, just pack your things and walk away." "That new house is technically Ethan's asset.
You won't get a dime of it." "And the court will never give you custody of Leo because you don't have a job or an income." She whispered in my ear, her voice as light as a feather. "If you sign the divorce papers quietly, Ethan might give you $5,000." "If you don't, we'll see you in court.
And you won't even get a penny." I looked at her face and finally smiled. "Maya, how long have you two been sleeping together?" She blinked, startled. "Since you were three months pregnant," Ethan answered for her.
His voice was dead calm, as if he were talking about the weather. "You had a horrible temper back then. You cried over every little thing.
I couldn't stand it." "Maya happened to come over to check on you, and we just started talking." "Happened to." "Started talking." While I was pregnant, he was sleeping with my best friend.
While I was bleeding out on the operating table, they were "talking." While I was staying up night after night with a newborn, they were "talking." Three years.
I had been married to him for three years.
And he had been cheating on me for two and a half of them. "Chloe, it's not like I didn't give you a chance," Ethan sighed, his tone dripping with condescension. "After I got with Maya, I actually tried to make things work with you." "But look at you.
In three years, what have you accomplished besides raising a kid?" "You don't make money, you don't dress up, and you have no social life." "When I took you to company dinners, you didn't even know how to network.
You embarrassed me." "Maya is different. She can actually help my career.
We can talk about projects, investments, and business." "What do you have to offer compared to her?" Listening to his words, I didn't cry. I just found it incredibly hilarious.
Why didn't I make money? Because he had said, "Honey, you don't need to work. I'll take care of you." Why didn't I dress up? Because he had said, "You're married now.
Who are you trying to impress? Save the money." Why didn't I socialize? Because every time I came back from a dinner, he would snap at me, "Why were you smiling at those guys?
Are you into them or something?" He had personally molded me into a woman who only knew how to take care of a child.
And then he used that exact reason to despise me. "Fine," I said. Ethan blinked. "What?" "I said fine. I'll divorce you." "But I have conditions." Ethan's eyes lit up.
He thought I was finally "playing nice." "What conditions?" "I don't want the house. I don't want the savings.
But I'm taking Leo." "Also, I want to see the original contract for that new apartment." Ethan's face fell. "Why do you need the contract?" "To confirm something." "Confirm what?" I looked into his eyes, speaking slowly and deliberately. "To confirm whether any of my marital assets were used for that down payment."
