Opening · Chapter 1
Seven years. We had been together for seven years, and yet, my girlfriend’s Instagram had never featured a single trace of me.
Whenever I brought it up, she would always brush it off, saying she rarely posted on social media anyway, and told me not to be so sensitive.
An uncomfortable, lingering anxiety always hovered in my chest, but I chose to trust her. I stopped asking.
Until that night, when her phone lit up right next to me, and an Instagram notification popped onto the screen, catching my eye.
Late at night, after she fell fast asleep, I picked up her phone and unlocked it. The moment I clicked into her profile, the blood in my veins completely froze.
She had posted hundreds of updates. And in every single one of those hundreds of photos, the same man was smiling back.
Dinners, road trips, birthday parties—he was there for all of it. The latest post had been uploaded just today.
The caption read: "Happy 3rd wedding anniversary." In the comments, someone teased: "Three years of marriage and still this sweet?" And she had personally replied: "I'll be sweet with him for the rest of my life." I stared at the screen for a long, long time.
Then, I placed the phone back on the nightstand. I didn't sleep a wink that night. When the sun came up, she woke up and leaned in to kiss me, just like she did every morning.
I turned my head away, dodging her lips. "Chloe, let's break up." Her lips brushed against my hair. She froze for a second, then chuckled. "What's wrong, babe?
Didn't sleep well last night?" I didn't say a word. She reached out to caress my cheek, but I dodged her again. Her hand hovered awkwardly in the air before she slowly drew it back.
She sat up, propping herself up on the mattress, and squinted at me. "Are you mad?" Her voice was soft, carrying that familiar, gentle warmth that I loved. "Is it because I came home late last night?
The company had an emergency meeting. I really couldn't get out of it." I remained silent. She leaned in closer, studying my face, and suddenly laughed. "Oh, I get it.
Did you watch some stupid TikTok videos about relationships again?" She reached out and ruffled my hair, treating me like a sulky child. "Come on, stop overthinking.
I'll leave work early today and take you to that steakhouse you’ve been dying to try, okay?" Her tone was so natural, so full of love.
For seven years, she had always been like this. When I was angry, she would soothe me. When I was sad, she would make me laugh. Whenever I wanted something, she never said no.
That was why I had never doubted her.
That was why I had believed every single one of her excuses. "Chloe," I finally spoke, my voice so raspy it didn't even sound like mine. "Yeah, babe?" "You and him... when did you two meet?" The smile on her face stiffened, inch by inch. "What do you mean, 'him'?" Her voice was tight, but she forced another laugh. "Who are you talking about?" She was still acting.
I looked at her face—a face I had adored for seven years—and suddenly felt like I was looking at a complete stranger. "Your Instagram," I said. "Hundreds of posts.
You blocked me from seeing all of them." Her face went utterly pale. "That guy.
The one you call 'hubby.' The one you wished a happy third wedding anniversary." Her lips trembled, but no sound came out. "It’s been seven years, Chloe." My voice began to shake. "I never once checked your phone because you said relationships need trust.
You told me you didn't like posting on Instagram, and I believed you. You told me you'd introduce me to your parents when you were ready, and I believed you.
You said you wanted us to enjoy our twenties before getting married, and I believed that too." Hot tears finally spilled over my lashes, rolling down my cheeks. "I believed everything you said.
And this is how you treat me?" She reached out to hug me, but I shoved her away. Panic flashed in her eyes, and she stumbled over her words. "Liam, listen to me!
It's not what you think. That was arranged by my family. My parents blackmailed me.
They said my dad’s failing heart couldn't take the stress, and they threatened to completely disown and cut me off.
I had no choice..." I stared at her as if she were a ghost. "You had no choice?" I repeated her words, tasting the bitterness. "So they forced you to marry him?
They forced you to have dinner with him, travel with him, and celebrate his birthdays?
Did they also force you to post hundreds of pictures on Instagram just to show off how much you love him?"
Opening · Chapter 2
Her face flushed from white to red, then back to a sickly pale. "You could have chosen not to introduce me to your parents." "But why did you have to lie to me for seven consecutive years?" "Liam—" "You told me you didn't have a habit of sharing your life online." I cut her off. "So what are those hundreds of posts about?" She opened her mouth, but she had no answer.
I grabbed her phone from the nightstand, unlocked it, opened Instagram, and shoved the screen right in front of her face. "Were these also posted because your parents threatened to disown you?" Her fingers twitched, wanting to grab the phone, but I pulled it back. "Chloe, let me ask you one thing." I locked my eyes onto hers. "What exactly was I to you during these seven years?" I stuffed the phone back into her hand. "Forget it.
Don't answer. I don't want to hear it." I swung my legs out of bed. My knees felt weak, and I had to lean against the nightstand for support.
She jumped out of bed immediately, trying to pull me back. "Liam, please don't do this. Let's sit down and talk." "I have to go to work." "How can you go to work in this state?
I'll call in sick for you." "No need." I grabbed my bag and opened the front door. She called my name from behind, but I didn't look back.
The moment the elevator doors closed, I leaned against the cold metal wall and finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
Once I reached my office building, I sat on a concrete bench by the sidewalk for a long time. My phone buzzed repeatedly. It was Chloe calling, but I didn't answer.
Snapchat notifications flooded my lock screen one after another: Liam, where are you? Don't scare me. I'm so, so sorry. Please come back, let's talk. I swear I'll fix this. Liam, please. I put my phone on silent.
I scrolled through my chats and found my dad's message from last week. Liam, how are things going with Chloe? When can our families meet up? You're not getting any younger, son.
It's time to settle down. My reply back then had been: Dad, she's super busy with work right now.
We'll talk about it once this busy season is over. My dad had replied: Alright, alright. Take your time. I just worry about you living all by yourself out there. It's not easy.
It’s good to have someone caring by your side. Oh, yes. Chloe was incredibly caring.
The night I got completely wasted at a business dinner, she stayed up all night, bringing me Advil and a glass of water, gently wiping my face.
The breakfast diner I loved had a halfhour line every weekend, but she would go there every Saturday morning just to buy it for me.
I ended up taking a personal day and went back to my apartment. I sat on the sofa until the afternoon, staring into space.
Chloe's messages kept lighting up my phone, but I didn't even have the energy to read them. Around four in the afternoon, my phone rang. It wasn't Chloe.
It was a delivery guy. "Is this Mr. Miller? I have a package for you. Are you home?" "Yes." He handed me a mediumsized box. It was quite heavy. I looked at the return label.
It was from Amazon. I tore it open. Inside was a sleek, black sports watch—the latest model.
Just the other day at dinner, I had casually mentioned how cool this watch looked on a tech blog. She had glanced at me, saying nothing. She was always like that.
She would say nothing, but quietly make it happen. That was why I had never doubted her. How could someone who woke up early every Saturday to buy me breakfast lie to me?
How could someone who stayed up all night to take care of me when I was sick lie to me?
How could someone who remembered every single one of my preferences and never said no to me lie to me? And yet, she had lied to me for seven whole years.
After a long time, I picked up my phone and called the delivery guy back. "Hi, about the package you just delivered... I got the wrong item.
Can I return it?" "As long as the box is unopened, yes. You can just request a return on Amazon." "Okay, thank you." I sealed the box back up.
Just then, the front door clicked open. Chloe stood at the entrance, panting heavily, sweat dripping down her forehead. She must have run up.
Our apartment was a sixthfloor walkup, no elevator. When she saw me, she looked as if a massive weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
She leaned against the doorframe for a few seconds. "Liam." She walked in, her voice shaking. "You scared me to death." I didn't move.
She knelt in front of me, looking up at me with red, teary eyes. "I know I messed up, Liam. I shouldn't have lied to you. I shouldn't have hidden him from you.
But I swear, I don't love him. My parents forced me. They threatened to cut me off, I really had no choice..."
Opening · Chapter 3
"You had no choice?" "I mean it, Liam! You're the only one in my heart. He and I have zero feelings between us. It's just a marriage on paper.
Once things settle down with my parents, I will divorce him. Just give me some time, please?" I looked at her face, her eyes.
Seven years. "You’ve been married to him for three years," I said. Her face stiffened. "Three years, Chloe. Not three months, not three days. Three years.
During this time, you had countless opportunities to tell me the truth, but you chose not to." "Liam..." "Does he even know I exist?" She fell silent.
She reached out, trying to grab my hand. I pulled away. "Liam, please, just give me one more chance. I swear I'll handle it.
I'll go talk to him about the divorce tomorrow." "Chloe," I interrupted, "do you love him?" She froze. "When you posted those photos on Instagram, when you wrote those captions, what were you thinking?
When you dined with him, traveled with him, and celebrated birthdays with him, were you happy?
How did it feel when you called him 'hubby'?" Her lips parted, but she couldn't say a word. I stood up, grabbed a suitcase from the closet, and walked into the bedroom.
Chloe rushed in after me, blocking my path. "Liam, don't leave!" "I'm not leaving." She blinked, a glint of hope rising in her eyes. "Really?
Liam, I knew you still—" "You're the one who is leaving." Her expression completely froze.
I bypassed her and began pulling her clothes out of the closet, throwing them onto the bed one by one.
She stood by the door, her face turning paperwhite. "Liam, what are you doing?" "Seven years of clothes.
That's quite a lot." "Are you going to pack them, or should I do it for you?" "Liam!" She rushed over and grabbed my wrist. "Can you please calm down?
Can't we just talk about this?" I looked down at her hand. The hand that had made me breakfast, the hand that had held me and comforted me.
It had probably slipped a wedding ring onto another man's finger too. "Let go," I said. She didn't. "Liam, I know you're furious, but you can't just end this.
We've been together for seven years! Are you seriously throwing our relationship away just like that?" Seven years of relationship.
I looked at her face and suddenly wanted to laugh. "Chloe, do you have any idea how I lived through these seven years?" Her grip loosened slightly. "Every time my dad asked when we were getting married, I told him to wait, that you weren't ready.
Every time my friends asked why we never posted pictures of us together, I told them you just didn't like social media.
Every time I saw other people getting married, celebrating anniversaries, or posting cute photos on Instagram, I told myself it was fine.
I told myself you just valued privacy, and that your love for me in real life was enough." I couldn't hold it in anymore.
My eyes burned, and tears began to blur my vision. "I made excuses for you for seven years. And what did you do?" "You married someone else.
You posted hundreds of updates on Instagram, blocking me from every single one of them. You called him your husband. What about me? What was I to you?
Just some side guy?" "Liam, I swear I don't love him!" "Whether you love him or not has nothing to do with me anymore!" I barked, shaking her hand off my wrist. "Pack your things.
Get your stuff out of here before tonight." "Liam!" "Or I'll throw everything out on the street."
