Opening · Chapter 1
My fated mate, Alpha Alexander, banned me from attending the Iron Ridge Pack’s annual Hunt Festival. His excuse? "You don’t even have a wolf, Elena.
Going there would only ruin the mood for everyone." I didn’t argue. Instead, I quietly booked a plane ticket, planning to take a solo vacation to clear my mind.
But then, he took Isabella instead. Isabella is the daughter of the Ridgecrest Pack’s Alpha. Standing next to Alexander, she looked perfect—like she belonged there.
On the very first night of the festival, someone anonymously sent me photos of them together. So, I canceled my plane ticket and booked a yacht ticket instead.
By the time Alexander returned from the festival campground, I was already packing my things.
He stood in the doorway, looking surprisingly guilty for once. "Where are you going?" "Home." "Your home is right here—" "No, it isn't." I zipped my suitcase, walked right past him, and didn't look back.
He had no idea what "going home" actually meant. He had no idea that my last name is Smith.
And the Smith family of the Silver Creek Pack is the biggest creditor his Iron Ridge Pack has in the entire state of Washington. "Elena Smith, how long are you going to play these hardtoget games?" Alexander kicked my suitcase out of the way, his eyes flashing with irritation. "Canceling your flight and booking a yacht?
You think changing your travel plans is going to force me to beg for your forgiveness?" I stopped and looked at his arrogant, selfrighteous face. "I told you.
I'm going home." "Your home is right here!" "It’s not." I looked him dead in the eye. "Let go of me." He didn't expect that look in my eyes.
There was no begging, no desperate questioning, and no tears. There was only the cold, piercing indifference you’d show to a piece of trash.
For a second, he looked guilty, but his Alpha pride quickly covered it up.
He let out a cold laugh and snatched my identity token straight out of my purse. "You’re a wolfless orphan.
Besides my pack, what home could you possibly go back to?" I looked at my empty palm. I didn't scream.
I didn't try to fight him for it. "Give it back." "I’ll give it back when you learn how to behave." He carelessly tossed my token into the highest drawer of the foyer cabinet and locked it. "I took Bella to the Hunt Festival because her father agreed to a longterm alliance between Iron Ridge and Ridgecrest." "You’re a wolfless useless human.
Aside from holding me back, what can you actually do for me?" "I’m playing a part for the future of our pack. My feelings for you haven't changed.
Why do you have to throw a tantrum right now?" I looked at the man I had loved for seven years. Suddenly, he looked completely repulsive. Playing a part?
Is that why he brought another woman in front of his entire pack, letting her act like she was the future Luna? "Alexander, do you honestly think I have no selfrespect?
That you can just walk all over me whenever you want?" Alexander frowned, clearly thinking I was being unreasonable. "You don't have a wolf!
What would you even do at the Hunt Festival? Watch everyone else hunt while they laugh at me for having you?" Just then, the doorbell rang.
Isabella stood at the door, wearing a highend designer dress and a sweet, perfect smile. "Alexander, is Elena mad at me?" She walked in, naturally wrapping her arm around Alexander’s.
In that instant, it felt like an invisible needle pierced my chest.
My fated mate instinct screamed, and my dormant wolf growled low inside my mind, warning me: Another female is touching him. I forced down the rising wave of nausea and kept my composure. "I just thought the balcony view of this apartment was so beautiful, so I wanted to borrow it for my birthday party.
I didn't know it would make Elena run away from home," Isabella said. I stared at them coldly. This apartment was bought with my own money. Alexander’s name wasn't even on the deed.
Every piece of furniture, every plant, was handpicked and arranged by me. And now, without even asking, he was just giving my home to another woman for a party.
My wolf was quiet now. But I could feel her resentment. She had once truly believed he was our fated mate.
Now, she didn't even want to look at him. "She’s just petty and smallminded.
She doesn't know how the world works," Alexander said, patting Isabella’s hand gently. "It’s just an apartment. You’re the daughter of the Ridgecrest Alpha.
Use it however you want." He turned to me, his eyes instantly turning cold. "Elena Smith, Bella is doing you a favor by even wanting to use your place." "Be generous for once.
Don't make me look at you like you're some crazy, hysterical woman." I stared at their linked arms. "Fine. She can borrow the apartment." My voice was dead calm.
Alexander blinked, caught off guard by my sudden compliance. "Glad to see you finally have some common sense." "But if anything is broken, you pay the full price," I said, locking my eyes onto Isabella.
Isabella giggled, covering her mouth. "Oh, Elena, you're so funny. A place like this?
The cost of these things is pocket change to me." "Good." I turned to grab my spare bag, getting ready to leave. "What are you doing now?" Alexander stepped forward, blocking my path. "Since you're using my apartment for a party, I’d hate to be an eyesore.
I'll stay at a hotel." "Elena Smith, I'm warning you.
Don't push your luck." He lowered his voice, his tone dripping with condescending grace. "I canceled my business dinner tonight just to come home and be with you.
Don't spit on my generosity." I walked right past him and headed for the front door. "If you walk out of this door tonight, don't ever think about setting foot in the Iron Ridge Pack territory again!" "Suits me perfectly."
Opening · Chapter 2
"You really think I can’t live without you?" Alexander’s angry voice echoed behind me, his pride clearly wounded. I didn't look back. I opened the door.
Right then, a muddy stray dog burst in from the hallway, running straight toward Alexander. Mud splattered all over his expensive, customtailored suit trousers.
I stopped, waiting for him to explode. Alexander was a notorious neat freak.
In the past, even if I took three showers and wore fresh clothes after coming back from the outside, if he smelled a single scent he didn't like on me, he would scowl and tell me to stay away.
But now, looking at the mud on his pants, he only frowned for a split second. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, Alexander! I just rescued this puppy downstairs.
He's so hyper!" Isabella quickly knelt down, pulling out a tissue to wipe the mud. To my surprise, Alexander smiled. He didn't get mad at all.
Instead, he reached down and patted the dirty dog's head. "It’s fine, Bella. It’s sweet of you to care for animals.
It’s just a suit." He even took Isabella’s hand, holding the tissue, his eyes filled with warmth.
The ache in my chest flared up, sharp and agonizing, like someone was wringing my heart out. I could barely breathe. It turned out he never had a "neat freak" phase.
He just hated me. He was disgusted by me, and he looked down on me from the very beginning. Simply because I never told him my real identity, or about my wolf.
I felt a sudden urge to scream the truth in his face, but my wolf stopped me. “That’s dangerous, Elena. You know my existence must remain a secret.
Besides, if he treats you like this just because of your status, he was never worthy of being your mate.” She was right.
I knew she was right. "Elena, you don't mind if I keep the puppy here, do you?" Isabella looked up at me, acting innocent. "Do whatever you want." I pulled my suitcase toward the door, but Alexander grabbed my wrist in a vice grip. "Your little tantrum has gone far enough.
Stay and eat dinner." Without giving me a choice, he dragged me back into the dining room and shoved me into a chair.
The table was set with highend takeout seafood—all of Isabella's favorites. Alexander put on disposable gloves and expertly began peeling a shrimp.
I watched his smooth, practiced movements.
Over the years we were together, whenever I asked him to peel a single shrimp for me, he would throw his forks down in frustration. "Can’t you even do something that simple?" "Elena Smith, stop being so highmaintenance." Now, he was happily peeling a whole plate of shrimp for another woman. "Elena, why aren't you eating?" Isabella smiled, chewing on a shrimp. "Is the food not to your liking?" Alexander didn't even look up from peeling a crab. "She always looks like she's at a funeral.
Just ignore her." I put my forks down and stood up. "Are you done watching?" Alexander asked coldly, glancing at me. "If you're done, clean up the table."
Opening · Chapter 3
"Alexander gave me this moonstone necklace.
You don't mind, do you, Elena?" Isabella deliberately swept her long hair to the side, showing off a delicate moonstone necklace around her neck.
I had just thrown the food containers into the trash. When I turned around and saw the necklace, my blood ran cold, then boiled. That was my late mother's heirloom.
I kept it locked in the bedroom safe, too precious to even wear. "Take it off." I walked up to Isabella, my voice freezing the air. "Elena, why are you being so mean?" Isabella whimpered, shrinking behind Alexander. "Alexander said it was just gathering dust in the safe, and that it would look much prettier on me." Alexander shielded Isabella, glaring at me. "Elena Smith, that’s enough!
You're just jealous of Bella. You’re seriously going to fight over a cheap necklace?" "I'll buy you ten of them tomorrow.
Take your pick." Looking at his selfrighteous face, the last seven years felt like a sick joke. "Alexander, that is my mother's heirloom." "What right do you have to break into my safe?" Alexander's eyes flickered with a brief moment of guilt, but he quickly recovered his arrogant stance. "What's yours is mine.
Why are you drawing lines between us?" "Besides, Bella is accompanying me to the Hunt Festival’s bonfire gala tonight.
She needs a proper piece of jewelry." "A wolfless human like you wearing something like this is just a waste anyway." “How dare he!” my wolf roared in fury. “Elena, reject him!
Reject him now!” "I’m going to say this one last time. Take it off." I stepped forward, reaching out to unclamp the necklace.
Alexander shoved me back with enough force to send me crashing against the edge of the dining table. A sharp pain shot through my lower back.
But it was nothing compared to the agony in my chest. My fated mate had laid his hands on me to protect another woman.
I had been completely, utterly betrayed. "Elena Smith, don't walk all over my patience." Alexander looked down at me with pure disgust. "Bella is doing you a favor by wearing your trash." "If you keep acting like a lunatic, even I won't want you anymore." Isabella smirked from behind his shoulder, her eyes full of triumph. "It’s okay, Alexander.
Elena clearly cares about it too much. I'll just give it back." She pretended to unbuckle it. Alexander grabbed her hand. "Keep it on.
Let’s see who dares to touch you tonight." He glared at me. "Elena, I don't have time for your drama tonight. Stay here and think about what you did.
When you're ready to apologize, call me." With that, he took Isabella’s hand and walked out the door. The door slammed shut.
I gripped the edge of the table and slowly stood up, the pain in my back making my head incredibly clear. I didn't cry. I didn't break anything.
I walked into the bedroom and looked at the forced safe. Inside, besides the necklace, was a debt contract belonging to the Iron Ridge Pack. I didn't sleep a wink that night.
At dawn, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in seven years. "Benjamin, I need you to do something for me." Benjamin was the Beta of my father’s Silver Creek Pack, and my childhood friend.
Seven years ago, for the sake of "true love," I had fought with my family and left the pack. Benjamin had spent seven years looking for me.
He had waited for me the entire time. "My lady... you’re finally calling me.
Your father has missed you so much..." Benjamin’s voice, usually deep and stoic, was actually trembling. "We can catch up later," I interrupted him coldly. "Do something for me." "Cut off all funding to the Iron Ridge Pack.
Immediately." There was a second of silence on the other end, followed by a low, pleased chuckle from Benjamin. "As you wish, my lady." "I’ll fly over tomorrow with my team.
I promise Alexander will be on his knees before you within fortyeight hours." I hung up and looked at the mirror.
The girl who had spent seven years begging for scraps of love was gone. Alexander, you brought this on yourself. My wolf didn't speak, but I could feel her satisfaction.
She had been waiting for this call for a very long time.
Opening · Chapter 4
By the second evening of the Hunt Festival, the bonfire gala was in full swing. "Cross Elena Smith's name off the guest list tonight." Alexander stood at the entrance of the venue, giving cold instructions to Beta Derek.
I stood in the shadows not far away, hearing every word. "But Alpha Alexander, Miss Elena usually helps arrange the venue..." Beta Derek hesitated. "We don't need her tonight," Alexander snapped. "Bella is my date.
Having Elena here will only make things awkward." "Tell the guards if they see her, bar her from entering." I watched him turn and walk into the grand hall.
I didn't even have the energy to confront him anymore.
Barring me from my own pack’s event just so his mistress wouldn't feel awkward? "Tell Alpha Alexander," I said, stepping out of the shadows to look Beta Derek in the eye, pronouncing every word clearly. "He will pay a price he cannot afford for today's decision." Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heels, my stilettos clicking against the pavement, and left without looking back.
The large screens outside the venue began broadcasting the party inside.
Alexander held Isabella’s hand as they walked under the spotlight. "Everyone, I’d like to introduce Isabella Martinez, daughter of the Ridgecrest Pack Alpha." He looked at her with pure warmth. "She will be the future Luna of the Iron Ridge Pack." The crowd erupted in cheers and applause.
I stood in the cold wind, watching the screen, and severed the last remaining tie in my heart. I walked toward a black Bentley parked by the curb.
Benjamin opened the door and respectfully handed me a file. "My lady, the yacht is ready. We can leave anytime." "Let's go.
To the Seattle port." Meanwhile, halfway through the gala, Alexander suddenly felt an overwhelming wave of anxiety.
He instinctively looked toward the corner of the room, expecting to see a familiar figure, but found nothing. "Elena didn't show up?" He grabbed Beta Derek. "Alpha Alexander, you ordered the guards to block her, remember?
They said she left half an hour ago." "Where did she go?" "It seems... she went to the Seattle port." Alexander’s heart dropped. Elena was a wolfless human.
Where would she get the money to go to the Seattle port, let alone travel? Then he remembered my words from last night—canceling my flight and booking a yacht ticket.
The cold, final look in my eyes when I said "Suits me perfectly" flashed through his mind. Was she really leaving him?
He pushed Isabella aside, ignoring her protests, and ran out of the venue like a madman. My wolf spoke in my head: The boat is waiting.
He’ll see the Silver Creek flag soon. The ocean wind howled.
Alexander ran to the dock, panting heavily, desperately searching the crowd. "Elena!" At that moment, I was standing on the deck of a massive yacht bearing the Silver Creek Pack crest, looking down at him.
Alexander froze, his face filled with sheer disbelief. Standing next to me was an imposing, powerful middleaged man.
My father, Alpha Richard of the Silver Creek Pack. "Alpha Alexander, I believe your Iron Ridge Pack still owes my family a massive debt."
