Opening · Chapter 1
On our fifth anniversary, Julian knelt in front of a crowd to propose, but I hesitated. After a long pause, I decided to trust him one last time.
But as expected, right before the ring could slide onto my finger— Chloe appeared. Claiming to be Julian’s "rival," she snatched the ring and slid it onto her own finger.
It fit perfectly. "Julian, you stole my project. Consider this ring compensation.
Fair, right?" Julian chuckled, his voice carrying the spoiled indulgence I was so used to: "Chloe, don’t push it." He turned to me, ready to brush it off like he always did: "Sienna, she’s just making trouble again.
Let's do the proposal next time..." I looked at Julian, the last shred of my love for him evaporating.
I cut him off: "Julian, this is the only proposal you’ll ever get from me." "Are you giving this ring to me, or to her?" Julian’s smile froze.
He opened his mouth but couldn't make a choice. Instead, he tried to sweep it under the rug again. "Sienna, why are you making such a big deal out of this?
Chloe has hated me since we were kids. She always picks on me. You know that.
Next time, I’ll buy you an even bigger, more luxurious ring, okay?" "Next time?" I sneered, five years of bottledup frustration and anger finally boiling over. "Since day one of our relationship, your 'next time' has always been pushed to the future!" "In these five years, have you stopped Chloe even once?
Every gift you got me—bags, dresses, jewelry—she always managed to steal them. And you let her." "Today it's a proposal ring.
Tomorrow, are you going to let her put her name on our marriage certificate too?" I took a step forward, staring into his shifting eyes. "Julian, stop flirting with her under the guise of being 'rivals.' I’m not waiting for your 'next time' anymore." "I want an answer right now!" Julian was speechless.
He bit his lip, his eyes darting uncontrollably between Chloe and me. Our friends in the crowd also felt this went too far. They started calling Chloe out: "Chloe, there's a limit.
Don't ruin a proposal." "It's one thing to mess with Julian, but stealing a proposal ring? Give it back!" "Chloe, have some decency. They're getting engaged.
Why are you crashing this? It’s embarrassing." ... Hearing this, the smug grin on Chloe's face faded.
Her eyes welled with tears, and she looked at Julian with a victimized, stubborn gaze. Julian couldn't bear to see her like this and was about to speak up for her.
I stepped forward and held out my hand to Chloe. "The ring." Chloe froze. I snatched the ring back easily.
I tried to slide it onto my own finger—but it was incredibly loose, sliding past my knuckle with a massive gap.
Then, I pushed the ring back onto Chloe’s finger—it slid on perfectly, as if custommade for her. The crowd gasped quietly.
So, this proposal ring was never meant for me in the first place. I let out a bitter laugh, completely done with Julian. "No need to argue anymore, everyone.
Since it was never mine, there’s no such thing as Chloe 'returning' it to me." "Julian, we are completely over." With that, I walked straight out of the banquet hall without looking back.
Seeing how things turned out, several friends desperately nudged Julian, who was frozen in place. "What are you doing? Go after her!" Julian didn't move.
Being dumped in front of everyone bruised his ego. "Go after her? No way. I’ve spoiled her too much! Chloe and I have been bickering since we were kids, everyone knows that.
Sienna is just overreacting. Besides, we’ve been together for five years.
She can't let me go that easily." "Give her a couple of days to cool off, and she’ll crawl right back to me!"
Opening · Chapter 2
But Julian didn't get a text from me begging for reconciliation. Instead, he got a call from a mutual friend probing him: "Julian, did you and Sienna really break up?
I heard she’s been going on a lot of blind dates lately." "Blind dates?" Julian was stunned for a second, then laughed mockingly.
Swirling his drink, his tone was incredibly arrogant: "I knew it. She’s just too proud to come back directly, so she’s playing hard to get to give me a way out.
Otherwise, how would you even hear about this? Whatever, I’ll give her a break." Confident, he pulled out his phone and dialed my number.
He even cleared his throat, rehearsing his opening line.
But when the call connected, all he got was a cold, automated voice: [The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.] Julian frowned. In disbelief, he hung up and redialed.
This time, it rang once and went straight to voicemail. He tried again, only to hear a busy tone.
Refusing to believe it, he tried to send a text, only to see a glaring red exclamation mark.
His friend, watching his awkward breakdown, asked cautiously: "Julian, you okay?" Julian put his phone away, forcing a relaxed tone: "Yeah! Why wouldn't I be? She just blocked me.
Women always play these petty games. Give her a few days, and she’ll get over herself." The friend gave a polite laugh but said nothing.
The next day, I ran into Julian again at an upscale auction.
I was looking down at the catalog when a familiar voice sounded above me: "What, did you hear I invited Chloe as my date today, so you crashed the event?" I looked up.
Julian had walked over to my row, with Chloe clinging tightly to his arm. They sat down in the empty seats right next to me, looking provocative.
I gave them a brief glance, didn't even bother to reply, and went back to my catalog. My silence clearly angered Julian.
He sneered, mocking me: "Sienna, there's a limit to playing hard to get." "Stalking me all the way here... aren't you just trying to get my attention?" I didn't even spare him a glance, calmly waiting for the auction to start.
Seeing me completely unfazed, Julian’s face darkened. Just then, a stunning emerald necklace was brought onto the stage. It caught my eye.
I raised my paddle: "Two million." Julian’s eyes lit up, and he immediately raised his own paddle: "Three million." He leaned in. "You like it?
If I bid for it, will you stop this silent treatment?" Before Julian could finish, Chloe immediately started bidding against him. "Three.five million.
I love this piece too." She looked at me smugly. "It's an auction, high bidder wins.
You won't be mad, right, Sienna?" I didn't say a word and raised my paddle again: "Four million." But the price kept climbing as Chloe intentionally drove it up.
Julian thought it was the perfect time to strike.
He leaned over, his voice commanding: "Sienna, just agree to get back with me." "I’ll win this necklace from her right now and give it to you. Consider it my apology.
How's that for sincerity?" I turned my head, finally looking at Julian. I sneered: "Not interested." Julian’s expression froze, a mix of humiliation and anger washing over his face.
He threatened in a low voice: "Sienna, don't push your luck!" He turned back and raised his paddle: "Ten million!" I didn't bid again.
It didn't matter how much I bid; Chloe would always interfere before the hammer fell. I didn't even want the man anymore, let alone a necklace.
But just then, a commotion broke out near the stage.
The auctioneer received a note from a staff member, read it, and smiled with excitement. "Ladies and gentlemen, a VIP has just placed a blank check buyout on this 'Tears of the Forest'!" "According to the rules, this item goes directly to this VIP!" A blank check buyout!
The crowd erupted. The necklace was beautiful, but it wasn't worth a blank check buyout. Whoever did it had insane money. For a moment, the three of us were stunned.
Feeling bored, and having no interest in the remaining items, I got up to leave. But a waiter carrying a delicate velvet tray pushed through the crowd.
And stopped right in front of me. On the tray lay the very emerald necklace that had just been bought out.
The waiter bowed slightly: "Miss Sienna, our VIP guest requested that this be given to you."
Opening · Chapter 3
In an instant, the air around me seemed to freeze.
Faced with the envious stares of the crowd, I remained calm and politely declined: "I can't accept such a generous gift without reason.
Please thank the guest on my behalf." With that, I grabbed my bag and walked away. I had only taken two steps when a figure blocked my path.
Julian's face was livid, his eyes burning with rage. Before he could explode, Chloe’s instigating voice chimed in: "Oh, Julian, did someone just steal your girl?
Wow, I never thought I'd see the day you got humiliated like this." She looked between Julian and me with a fake smile: "Tsk, five years of dating meant absolutely nothing.
She’s moving on without a second thought. She doesn't love you at all." "Only you, Julian, would be dumb enough to chase her all the way here." Julian trembled with rage.
He turned and snapped at Chloe: "Shut up, Chloe! This is none of your business!" Seeing Julian this angry made Chloe even more thrilled. "How is it none of my business?
Watching you suffer is my favorite hobby.
But..." She shifted the target back to me, trying to completely shatter whatever was left between Julian and me: "I'm really curious, Sienna.
Did you reject Julian because you look down on him, or... did you find a better sugar daddy and throw Julian out like trash?" With that, Chloe leaned closer to Julian, pretending to comfort him: "Julian, face it.
You’re completely out of the game. She’s hooked a billionaire who can do a blank check buyout.
Why would she care about your net worth?" "Only I have been willing to stick by you all these years." As expected, Julian was entirely triggered by her mockery.
He glared at me with pure malice: "Sienna! Tell me! Is she speaking the truth?
Have you been playing me this entire time—" Looking at Julian's face, twisted with jealousy and rage, I laughed.
Five years of love, and this was how little he thought of me. "Julian," I said, meeting his bloodshot eyes. "Is that really the kind of woman you think I am?" To him, my refusal to explain was a confession.
Julian’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. He growled: "Fine... perfect!" "How dare you play me like a fool!" I didn't bother arguing. I turned and walked away.
Julian’s threatening roar echoed behind me: "Sienna, you’ll pay for this!" Since that auction, Julian and Chloe’s dynamic changed completely.
They were no longer the "rivals" who bickered constantly. Instead, they started showing up everywhere together. Rumors of their romance flooded the social scene.
Some even made sure these rumors reached my ears: "Julian finally opened his eyes.
He wasted five years on the wrong girl, but his true love was right next to him all along." I just smiled and ignored it.
Until I had no choice but to attend the 90th anniversary gala of the Sterling family patriarch. After a few drinks, the host announced the entertainment segment.
To my surprise, Julian dragged Chloe onto the stage and snatched the microphone. He scanned the crowd, his eyes locking onto me with a look of longawaited vengeance.
Julian took a deep breath and began his performance. "First, I’d like to wish my greatgrandfather a very happy 90th birthday!
May he live a long and healthy life!" He started with the formalities, then abruptly changed his tone. "And on this wonderful day, in front of all our family and friends, I, Julian Sterling, want to settle some old business and share some incredible news!" The entire room focused on him.
Opening · Chapter 4
"Most of you probably heard that I used to be blind.
I mistook a piece of glass for a diamond and dragged out a pointless relationship for five whole years!" A wave of snickers rippled through the crowd.
I could feel countless eyes on me—some pitiful, some mocking, some gloating.
I kept my back straight, my nails digging into my palms, but maintained a neutral face. "Those five years were like a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.
I gave her my heart, and she stepped on it. I planned a future, and she cheated." Julian’s tone was dramatic, as if he were the ultimate victim.
Then, he raised his voice, looking at Chloe with deep affection: "Thankfully, karma is real!" "It was Chloe!
The girl I always thought was my 'rival' was actually the one standing by me, never leaving my side!
She woke me up and showed me what real love looks like!" Chloe lowered her head right on cue, her eyes glistening with tears as she put on a shy, touched act.
Julian wrapped his arm around her waist and continued: "Chloe, I was an idiot before. Today, in front of everyone, I’m asking you to marry me!
I want the woman who wasted five years of my life to see what real love actually is!" With that, Julian pulled out a velvet box and got down on one knee. The most hilarious part?
The ring. It was the exact same ring he had used to propose to me. He was literally throwing my dignity and my past feelings onto the floor and stomping on them.
Chloe nodded eagerly, and amid the cheers of the crowd, Julian stood up and kissed her passionately. The crowd clapped and cheered.
But Julian’s gaze drifted over Chloe’s shoulder, locking onto me like a venomous snake, full of triumph. He mouthed silently: I. Don't. Want. You.
Anymore. The applause faded, but the whispers didn't. Julian wasn't done humiliating me. He raised the mic and called me out directly: "Sienna, we have history.
Now that I’ve found my true love, aren't you going to say 'congratulations'?" Muffled laughter echoed around me as everyone waited to see me break down. I took a deep breath.
Instead of backing away, I took a step forward, meeting his arrogant gaze. "Congratulations?" My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the whispers clearly. "If anyone is getting congratulated tonight, it should be me." Julian’s smirk froze, a flicker of confusion crossing his eyes. "I was going to wait a couple of days to announce this through an official press release.
But since you're so eager to know, I might as well share the good news now." Under everyone's puzzled stares, I slowly raised my left hand.
I revealed my ring finger, which had been discreetly hidden.
An antique, breathtakingly powerful diamond ring sat securely on my finger. "I'm engaged." Julian’s smug expression shattered.
He burst into laughter: "Sienna, have you lost your mind?" "You put on a cheap ring and think you can lie your way out of this?" "If I remember correctly, you came here alone tonight.
Where is your fiancé? Is he too embarrassed to show his face? Or did you run out of money to hire an actor?" The crowd erupted into even louder laughter.
My voice went icecold: "Julian, look closer. Don't you find this ring familiar?" His eyes instinctively locked onto the ring.
Suddenly, realization hit him, and his pupils dilated in horror. "This is the Sterling family heirloom ring, passed down to the matriarch of the family." "And you called it cheap?" I met Julian's completely panicked eyes and said clearly: "I came alone tonight because my fiancé is currently hosting this gala in the Sterling estate." "Julian, the man I am marrying is your adoptive father—Dominic Sterling."

Editor note
Why it stands out
Julian’s proposal ring slid perfectly onto Chloe’s finger—not mine. Five years of stolen gifts, broken promises, and his pathetic “next time” excuses ended right there. I blocked him and started blind dates. He laughed, called it playing hard to get. Then I showed up at an auction with a billionaire old enough to be his father. Julian’s smug face? Priceless. Now I’m marrying the dad.
