Opening · Chapter 1
Before my business trip, I left my daughter an unlimited Black Card. I demanded she spend at least one million dollars a month to get her used to a luxurious lifestyle.
At first, I thought seeing her spend money would motivate me to make more. But as time went on, things felt off. Within three days, she bought hundreds of luxury items.
In five days, she purchased ten luxury villas. Yesterday, she even ordered a hundred adult toys. I secretly flew back to New York to find out what was going on.
But to my horror, the moment I stepped off the plane, I got a call saying my daughter had been hit by a car while scavenging for recyclables.
She was in the hospital, unable to even pay her medical bills. The nurse’s tone on the phone was dripping with disgust. "Mrs. Vance, I’ve never seen a mother as heartless as you.
If you don't get here right now, your daughter might not make it!" Panicking, I rushed to the hospital, only to find her lying on a cheap cot, emaciated and broken.
As my heart bled for her, my phone buzzed. It was a notification that my Black Card had just been used for a luxury spa package.
I immediately stopped my assistant from cancelling the card and let out a cold laugh. Oh, they love swiping my card? I’ll make sure they swipe it until they burn in hell.
I stepped off the plane clutching a carefully wrapped birthday gift, imagining the bright, happy smile on my daughter’s face.
But the moment I turned on my phone at JFK airport, a dozen missed calls flashed on the screen. Before I could even process it, my phone rang again.
I picked it up. "Is this the mother of Seraphina Sterling? This is Mercy Community Hospital." "She was hit by a car yesterday while dumpsterdiving on the highway.
We brought her in for emergency surgery." "We saved her life, but you need to clear her medical bills immediately." I stood frozen, as if struck by lightning. "That’s impossible!" I blurted out.
The nurse's voice instantly turned hostile. "Are you trying to skip out on the bill?
Get here and pay up, or we’ll have to throw your daughter out to fend for herself." With a sharp click, the line went dead. My heart pounded with dread.
I rushed out of the terminal and told my chauffeur to fly to the hospital. How could Seraphina be scavenging for trash?
Even if she ran out of cash, the housekeepers at the estate would have fed her. And with the Black Card I gave her, how could she be unable to pay a medical bill?
The moment I ran into the ward, my breath caught. Lying on a filthy cot was my skeletal daughter.
Her arm and right leg were wrapped in thick plaster casts, making her already frail body look painfully tiny. When she saw me, her lifeless eyes suddenly filled with tears.
I rushed to her side, pulling her into my arms and gently stroking her back. "Don't cry, my sweet girl. Mom is here.
You’re safe now." Her face was covered in dark bruises, and her exposed arms were mapped with old and new scars.
In just one year, my bubbly, beautiful princess had been reduced to this.
Seraphina sobbed against my shoulder, her tears soaking my coat. "Mom, the nurse said today is the deadline.
If we don't pay, they’re going to throw me out on the street." Her words pierced my heart like a dagger.
I stroked her matted hair and whispered, "Sera, didn't I leave you my Black Card? How could you run out of money?" Her fragile frame shuddered.
It took all of her courage to look at me and whisper: "Julian took my card. He gave it to Chloe.
He said... he said I didn't deserve to be a Sterling, and that I was too pathetic to ever be his girl." Julian Miller was the son of our housekeeper, Martha Miller.
Chloe was the girl who had been swapped with my daughter at birth. Those two had always been close.
Many in our social circle assumed Julian would eventually marry into our family, so they constantly licked his boots.
When we finally found Seraphina and brought her home, I wanted her to feel secure.
I immediately kicked Chloe out of our villa, giving her enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life. I thought I had been more than generous.
I never imagined that these two ungrateful snakes would dare abuse my daughter the moment my back was turned. I will make them regret ever being born.
Looking at my terrified, frail daughter, my soul burned with rage. "Mom is going to make them pay, sweetie. No one will ever hurt you again."
Opening · Chapter 2
Just as the words left my mouth, a fiercelooking nurse marched into the room and threw the bill onto the bed. She rolled her eyes. "Pay up.
Don't think you can play dumb and sneak out." I looked around the dark, cramped, foulsmelling ward, then at my daughter's stained bedsheets. I couldn't take it anymore.
I made a single phone call. Within minutes, the hospital's Chief Director rushed in, trailed by a dozen top medical specialists.
The rude nurse paled. "Your attitude towards patients makes you entirely unfit for this profession. You are fired," the Director announced coldly.
He then turned to me, bowing deeply in terror. "Mrs. Vance, please forgive our negligence. We had no idea your daughter was here.
We are deeply sorry." The nurse finally realized she had crossed the wrong billionaire. She tried to beg for her job, but security dragged her out.
I declined the Director's offer to upgrade her to a VIP suite. Instead, I made another call.
In less than ten minutes, an elite private medical team arrived, gently transferring Seraphina into a luxury medical transport.
My executive assistant, Amy, stood beside me in her sharp designer suit and stilettos.
She lowered her head and reported in a quiet, professional tone. "While you were away, Julian Miller started his own tech startup.
He’s been telling everyone in New York that he’s your future soninlaw to secure funding and contracts." "He claimed he would eventually inherit your empire, and used that lie to siphon off several major projects." "He declared that he only recognizes Chloe as his fiancée.
Chloe has seized all the trusts and properties you set up for Seraphina.
And... she kicked Seraphina out of the Sterling estate." With every word Amy spoke, my expression grew colder. I had supported Julian since he was a kid because he seemed smart.
I paid for his elite private schools. I gave him a little warmth, and he suddenly thought he owned the world.
As for Chloe, she had enjoyed eighteen years of luxury that belonged to my daughter. Instead of feeling a shred of guilt, she tried to destroy Seraphina. I clenched my fists.
It seemed they had forgotten who I was. No one messes with Victoria Vance’s daughter and lives to tell the tale! Just then, my phone buzzed with another notification.
My Black Card had been used to buy entry tickets to an exclusive underground auction tonight. "Mrs. Vance, should I cancel the card immediately?" Amy asked.
A cold smirk played on my lips. "No. Let them play. Cancel it at exactly 7:00 PM tonight." "Also, arrange for Seraphina and me to attend that auction." "Yes, Mrs. Vance.
I’ll handle it right away." Amy bowed. Oh, so they love my money?
I’m going to throw them a party they’ll never forget. "And find out where these bruises on Seraphina came from," I added, my heart aching as I thought of her scarred body.
My icy aura must have frightened Seraphina. She timidly tugged at my sleeve. "Mom... are you mad at me?" "I’m sorry. I won't talk bad about Chloe anymore.
She can have everything." "Please don't abandon me." Seeing her beg for my affection broke me. What kind of lies had those monsters fed my baby?
How could I ever abandon her? "I’m not mad at you, my angel. I’m mad at myself for not protecting you." "What belongs to you stays yours. No one can steal it.
And Mom will never, ever leave you." Her eyes lit up, shining brighter than stars.
But then her head drooped again. "But Julian said you would prefer Chloe because she’s more poised and educated.
He said if I don't behave, you’ll send me back to the orphanage." "He said he is the heir chosen by the family, and whoever he chooses gets to be the real Sterling heiress." I almost laughed out loud at his delusion.
Where did Julian Miller get this sheer audacity? He was Seraphina’s high school senior, handsome and seemingly polite. Girls her age often fell for that type.
When Seraphina first came back, she had no friends, so I allowed Julian to stay at the estate to help her adjust. I had invited a wolf right into my home.
I gently lifted Seraphina's chin, looking into her tearfilled eyes. "Seraphina Sterling, you are the one and only heir to the Sterling and Vance empires.
You will inherit everything." "You don't have a sister, and you don't need a man to help you run things.
You will be the sole CEO of this empire." "Do you understand me?" My daughter’s face finally relaxed, and she nodded vigorously. That's my girl.
Opening · Chapter 3
At 7:00 PM, I led Seraphina into the ultraluxurious underground auction house located nine floors beneath Manhattan's financial district.
Here, money could buy absolutely anything. "Welcome, VIP guests.
Right this way to the private thirdfloor suite," the hostess said, her eyes widening the moment I showed her my gold crest.
This crest wasn't something you could buy with mere money. It represented absolute wealth and power.
There were fewer than five people in the world who had access to the thirdfloor suites.
The billionaires sitting on the first floor were worth tens of millions, yet they were only fit to sit in the common gallery. "Eat up, sweetie." I placed a plate of exquisite macarons in front of Seraphina.
The private suite was stocked with expensive delicacies and vintage champagne worth tens of thousands. Through the oneway glass, I looked down at the first floor.
Sure enough, Chloe and Julian were sitting in the crowd. Chloe was surrounded by her classmates from Pinecrest Academy, looking like a smug queen.
Seeing her flawless, glowing skin and her brandnew haute couture dress, and then looking at my emaciated daughter, a wave of hot anger surged through me. The auction began.
Chloe announced it was her birthday and that she would bid on gifts for all her classmates. Every time she raised her paddle, I bid higher. "Who is in the thirdfloor suite?
Why do they keep outbidding me?
Don't they know who the Sterling family is?!" Chloe hissed, her face flushed with anger as a milliondollar diamond necklace she wanted was bid up to five million. "Don't worry, babe.
Money is just a number. Once the auction is over, I’ll find out who they are and teach them a lesson," Julian consoled her smoothly, pulling out my Black Card to reassure her.
Seraphina looked at me nervously, seeing that I was bidding up prices but not actually buying anything. I smiled, thinking she wanted something.
I pulled out a small black velvet box like a magic trick. "The trash down there isn't worth our time.
This is the real birthday gift I prepared for you." "Open it." She opened it with trembling hands. Inside lay a breathtaking diamond necklace once worn by a British royal princess.
It was priceless. Everything in tonight’s auction combined couldn't buy a single diamond on it. "It’s too beautiful...
I don't deserve this," Seraphina whispered, afraid to even touch it.
I took the necklace out and clasped it around her neck. "Only you deserve this, my princess." She touched the diamonds, tears in her eyes, and hugged me tightly for the first time. "Thank you, Mom." Thank you for not giving up on me.
My heart softened, and I vowed that anyone who had ever hurt her would pay a thousandfold. After a while, I stepped out to take an urgent business call.
When I returned, I saw Seraphina downstairs, surrounded by a hostile crowd. "Seraphina, Chloe didn't even invite you.
How thickskinned do you have to be to crash her party?" "The heiress of the Sterling family invited us here to see the world, but that doesn't include a street rat like you!" "Look at the trash around her neck.
What fake plastic diamonds!" A shorthaired girl snarled, ripping the necklace off Seraphina’s neck.
The sharp tug left a bleeding scrape on my daughter's collarbone. "She’s still dreaming of being a rich girl!
How pathetic to pretend you're a Sterling, haha!" A jocktype boy laughed, and the rest of the group joined in, throwing insults like "bitch" and "imposter" at her.
In the chaos, someone kicked away Seraphina’s crutches. Several hands pushed her, and she collapsed hard onto the floor.
Seeing this, I instantly knew where all the bruises on my daughter's body had come from.
Opening · Chapter 4
Suppressing the urge to tear them apart right then and there, I walked down the stairs while taking photos with my phone. Normally, cameras were strictly banned here.
But for me, rules didn't apply. I dialed a number that made both the legal and underground worlds of New York tremble. "Missing me, honey?
Did Sera love her birthday surprise?" If anyone outside heard the ruthless head of the Sterling syndicate speak in such a soft, doting voice, they would have died of shock. "Look at the photos I just sent you." "Harrison Sterling!
Our biological daughter was beaten so badly she was hospitalized, and now they're abusing her right in front of me.
What are you going to do about it?" A heavy silence fell over the line. When he spoke again, his voice was pure ice. "I’m landing in ten minutes." I hung up.
I knew they were done for. Harrison wasn't like me; when he lost his temper, he burnt down entire dynasties. They would spend the rest of their lives regretting this day.
Around twenty students wearing Pinecrest Academy uniforms stood in a circle, sneering down at Seraphina, shoving her back down every time she tried to push herself up. "Give me back my necklace." "I came with my mom.
I wasn't tracking you!" Seraphina cried out, her face pressed against the floor. The shorthaired girl laughed mockingly, dangling the royal necklace in front of her. "Your mom?
The trashpicking beggar woman? She probably couldn't even crawl past the front gate unless she slept with some old security guard." "Shut up!
Don't you dare talk about my mother like that!" Seraphina fought back with sudden fury, ripping a chunk of her own hair free as she lunged forward to grab the necklace.
She fell back to the floor, panting, staring at the girl like a cornered, feral wolf. The girl flinched, taking a step back in fear. "Listen up, everyone.
Whoever hits her once gets ten thousand dollars.
When my mom gets back from Europe, I’ll make sure she helps your families’ businesses too!" Chloe stepped forward, wearing a pristine designer gown, with Julian wrapping his arm tightly around her waist.
At her words, the eyes of the classmates lit up. Clearly, this wasn't the first time they had been paid to abuse Seraphina. "You got it, Chloe! I’ve been practicing my swing.
I’ll make sure you're satisfied," the shorthaired girl sneered. She unclipped the thick metal chain strap from her designer purse.
It was made of solid, heavy iron links. "Julian, you don't feel bad for her, do you?" Chloe cooed, looking up at him with faux concern.
Julian didn't even blink. "Whatever makes you happy, babe. This is just her destiny." Seraphina, who had been struggling on the floor, went completely still.
The boy she had secretly loved for years had just dismissed her life like she was a stray dog. "Julian, you're the best," Chloe squealed.
The jock classmate immediately piped up, "Chloe is the daughter of the Sterling empire, and her mother is Victoria Vance. Julian is her perfect match.
They were born with gold spoons.
Seraphina isn't even worthy of polishing their shoes!" Chloe beamed, soaking in the adoration. "You only have yourself to blame for trying to seduce Julian and pretending to be a Sterling," the shorthaired girl laughed, raising the heavy iron chain to strike Seraphina. "Stop right there!"
