Opening · Chapter 1

The day after I taught a basic sexed module to my eighth graders, all hell broke loose.

The second I set foot on campus, an aggressive mother I vaguely recognized grabbed me by the arm and dragged me up the steps toward the flagpole in front of the school.

She held me in a vice grip. Right in front of arriving buses, students, and staff, she clicked on a loud megaphone. "Look at this woman, everyone!

Look at what kind of trash is teaching our kids these days!" "She's corrupting our innocent children!

She stood in front of my fourteenyearold daughter and talked about disgusting, vulgar sex acts!

She's turning my girl into a shameless degenerate!" "She doesn't deserve a teaching license!

I am filing an official report right now, and I demand the school fire her immediately!" My head spun.

Since when did standard, curriculumapproved sex education count as preaching obscenity?

By the time other teachers and our dean separated us and ushered us into the front office, my ears were still ringing. Was she seriously talking about me?

When did teaching biological facts become spreading filth? When did I ever encourage kids to lose their minds and ruin their lives?

As a homeroom teacher for fourteenyearolds who were right in the middle of puberty, I had always believed that what I said and did mattered deeply.

At an age when curiosity about their bodies naturally peaked, safe and honest education wasn't just helpful—it was nonnegotiable.

Now this woman was slapping a hideous target onto my back, and I wasn't about to take it lying down.

Wanting to deescalate things professionally, the other teachers and I tried to calm her down so we could understand what actually happened.

Through her hysterical, passiveaggressive rambling, we finally pieced it together.

She had found out that her daughter had a "crush" on a boy in the class. "It has to be this teacher's fault!" she shrieked. "My daughter is an angel! She's quiet, she follows rules!

You must have put dirty thoughts in her head during class to make her chase after boys!

She never would have done this on her own!" To clear my name, I immediately pulled out the printed slides from yesterday's health presentation. "Mrs. Davis, please look.

This is the exact slide deck I used yesterday." "Every single topic I covered is printed right here." "I sent an outline to all the parents on whatsapp beforehand, and no one else raised a single concern." "Could there be a misunderstanding?" "I assure you, I would never preach anything inappropriate to my students." Instead of looking at the papers, she snatched all twentyodd pages and slammed them straight into my face.

The sharp paper edges sliced across my cheek, and the sheets fluttered across the floor. "Ugh! Who wants to read this garbage?

You think I'm as sick in the head as you are?" Just then, our dean led her daughter into the office. On the way over, he had already asked the poor girl what was going on.

Her name was Lily Davis. A quiet, topperforming girl who never caused any trouble. She and another boy in class had a mutual crush.

They walked along the same route home after school and sometimes texted each other about homework. There was nothing inappropriate.

The closest thing to a "scandal" was a text wishing each other "sweet dreams." The moment Mrs.

Davis saw her daughter, she charged forward with her arm raised, aiming a slap right at Lily's face. Thankfully, two male teachers lunged in and held her back just in time.

I looked at Lily. She usually kept to herself, so I hadn't given her extra attention beyond her stellar grades.

Right now, she had her head down, completely emotionless, with a faint red welt already visible on her cheek. Her fingers were clenching the hem of her hoodie in absolute silence.

Contrasting with her mother's screaming, my heart broke for her. "Mrs.

Davis, I apologize if our curriculum caused any misunderstanding," the dean said, trying to smooth things over. "But I can assure you Miss Vance had no ill intentions.

She would never mislead your child." I took a breath and backed him up. "If the delivery of the lesson caught you off guard, I apologize for the shock. But these kids are fourteen.

Understanding these topics is healthy and necessary." She wasn't buying it.

She snatched a fallen slide off the floor and pointed at the bold header. "'Consequences and Risks of Early Sexual Activity'! You dare say this isn't filthy?!"

Opening · Chapter 2

"You're teaching my daughter how to mess around with boys! You're telling her to ruin her life!" "She is fourteen! Why does she need to hear this now? Am I not her mother?

Can I not teach her myself?" "She'll figure it out on her own when she's grown!" "What kind of agenda are you pushing? You're obsessed with pleasing men, aren't you?

You want to drag my daughter into the gutter with you!" "I'm reporting you to the district superintendent! I'm suing you!

I'm calling the cops to drag you out of here in handcuffs!" By then, the vice principal had heard the commotion and rushed into the office.

Seeing the woman's feral aggression, he frowned deeply. "Fine. Let's let the police handle this." Two patrol officers arrived at the school within ten minutes.

Once they heard the general story, they suggested Lily go back to class so she wouldn't miss her lessons. Mrs.

Davis narrowed her eyes, agreed, but demanded she follow her daughter to the classroom to "check things out." The whole crowd ended up trailing behind Lily to the hallway.

It was currently math class. The boy in question, Leo Carter, happened to be the math aide. He was handing out graded tests to his classmates. The second the door opened, Mrs.

Davis darted inside, seized Leo by his shirt collar, and hauled him toward the whiteboard. She was so fast that none of us could react in time. "It's you! You little punk!

You're the one seducing my daughter!" "I know kids like you! Rotten to the core!" "Apologize to my daughter right now in front of everyone!

Then drop out of this school by tomorrow!" "Swear that you will never speak a single word to her again!" The entire classroom went dead silent.

Leo's face turned bright red with confusion and humiliation. The officers rushed forward to separate them. Yet Mrs. Davis kept lunging at the boy like a rabid animal.

That was when Lily, who hadn't said a single syllable all morning, completely snapped. She shoved past two teachers and ripped her mother's hands off Leo. "Mom! Stop it, please!

It was all my fault! It has nothing to do with Miss Vance or Leo!" "You already cut Miss Vance's face! What more do you want?!" "I'm the shameless one, okay? I'm the bad kid!

Just stop humiliating me at school!" Her words only poured gasoline on her mother's rage. "Oh, talking back to your mother now, are you? You're just like your ungrateful sister!

Total trash!" Mrs. Davis raised her palm high. Lily closed her eyes in despair, tilting her chin away, bracing for the inevitable strike. The hit never landed.

I stepped right between them and caught her wrist midair. "Mrs. Davis.

This is an educational institution, not your personal fighting ring." The officers were getting severe headaches from the chaos. They firmly escorted Mrs.

Davis and the rest of us into an empty conference room. Filthy insults kept pouring from the woman's mouth until the officers laid down the law with firm warnings.

The mediation was miserable. Eventually, the mother dropped her final demand: "Transfer my daughter to another class! Right now!

Otherwise, her brain will stay filled with this trash and her grades will tank!"
