Opening · Chapter 1
I saw my son on the street with a strange man, and he was calling that man "Daddy." But that man was my wife’s stepbrother.
It turned out my wife was completely brainwashed by her toxic family. She actually did something so unforgivable just for her stepbrother!
I demanded a divorce, only to uncover a truth that completely shattered my entire world. "Hey Ethan, isn't that your son?" It was lunchtime, and I was driving down Riverside Drive.
My coworker, Luke, who was sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly pointed out the window. A young boy was standing on the sidewalk.
He looked about seven or eight, wearing a backpack. He seemed to be waiting for someone. Leo? I recognized him instantly. It was my son, Leo. "Why is he out here?" I muttered.
There was Riverside Elementary about a hundred yards ahead, but Leo didn't go to school there. His school, Horizon Academy, was in the new district, over two miles away.
His mom must have brought him here. But this was incredibly irresponsible. How could she just leave a kid standing by the road alone? A wave of anger washed over me.
I pulled the car over, got out, and walked over to him. "Leo! Come here. Where is your mom?" The boy looked at me.
But his eyes were completely blank, filled with a deep, intense wariness. Instead of running toward me, he turned around and dashed toward a convenience store nearby. "Hey!
Why are you running from me? I'm your dad!" I didn't think much of it. Frowning, I quickened my pace and followed him toward the store.
Just as the boy reached the entrance, I grabbed his backpack. But before I could scold him, he suddenly burst into tears and screamed: "Daddy! Help!
A bad man is trying to kidnap me!" Daddy? Bad man? I froze. I’m standing right here! Who on earth are you calling "Daddy"? And since when did I become a kidnapper?
Was this kid playing some sick prank on his own father? But his crying was so loud, and his face was so pale with genuine terror.
This didn't look like a prank. "Oh my god..." "Someone help! Help! Kidnapper!
He's trying to take the kid in broad daylight!" As I stood there dazed, the surrounding pedestrians stopped in their tracks. Someone started shouting.
The stares directed at me turned hostile. Two young guys even rolled up their sleeves and blocked my path.
It was only then, looking closely, that I realized this boy was slightly taller than Leo. He looked about a year older.
The name on his backpack read "Riverside Elementary." And I had never seen the clothes and shoes he was wearing today. Did I get the wrong kid?
My hand instinctively let go of his backpack. My mind was in a complete mess, utterly confused.
Because putting all those differences aside... this boy's face was an exact replica of my son Leo's! I know some people look alike in this world, but to look this identical?
Even I, the father, almost couldn't tell them apart! Seeing me let go of the kid, the two young guys rushed forward. One grabbed my shoulder, and the other grabbed my collar.
Passersby were already pulling out their phones, preparing to call the police... "It’s a misunderstanding!
It's a total misunderstanding!" Seeing things get out of hand, Luke quickly got out of the car and ran over to explain.
I snapped out of my shock, quickly pulled out my phone, opened my gallery, and showed everyone photos of me and Leo. "Wow, they really do look alike." "Seriously, like ninety percent identical.
I would have made the same mistake." "Right? I was wondering who would be brave enough to kidnap a kid on a busy street like this." "Crazy world.
Twins from different families, huh?" The two young men glanced at the photos and immediately let me go. The crowd began to whisper and disperse.
The tense atmosphere cleared up instantly. I instinctively looked back at the boy. And what I saw next made my heart drop.
Opening · Chapter 2
In my line of sight. A man stepped out of the convenience store, just lighting a cigarette. He must have gone inside to buy them.
The crying boy ran straight into his arms, yelling, "Daddy!" The man originally looked furious.
But the moment he turned his head and locked eyes with me, his face went completely pale. He didn't yell at me.
Instead, with a look of sheer panic, he scooped the boy up and walked away as fast as he could. He practically started jogging until they vanished from my sight around the corner.
That hurried, escaping silhouette screamed guilt. I felt a nagging sense of familiarity. I had seen this man somewhere before.
Moreover, his reaction upon seeing me was incredibly bizarre. It was as if... he knew me, too. The crowd finally fully dispersed.
I got back into the car, feeling completely disconnected from my body. "Man, Ethan, I gotta say, that kid looks freakishly like your son." "At least ninety percent..." Luke kept murmuring in disbelief.
Then, he joked, "If I didn't know you were a straightup family man, I’d seriously suspect you had a secret family somewhere!" My heart skipped a beat.
A terrible, suffocating feeling settled in my chest. Luke had never met my wife, Lily. So he didn't know that Leo didn't actually look like me.
Leo’s eyes, nose, and face shape were the exact copy of Lily’s. Since he was a baby, our relatives had always praised Leo for inheriting his mother's beautiful features.
In other words... the boy I just ran into didn't just look like Leo. He looked exactly like Lily. I met Lily through a mutual friend.
We liked each other, and within a month, we had a whirlwind wedding. Out of respect, I never pried into her past relationship history.
Which meant, chronologically, my darkest suspicion was entirely possible. That boy looked about a year older than Leo.
Could she have... had a child with someone else before she met me? As my mind raced with wild, agonizing thoughts, a realization suddenly struck me like a lightning bolt.
I remembered who that man was. Ryan Jenkins. My wife's stepbrother! My wife’s name was Lily. They had different last names because they shared absolutely no blood relation.
Ten years ago, before I met Lily, her parents divorced. Her father, Robert, remarried the next year. Ryan was the son Robert's new wife, Helen, brought into the family.
So, Lily and her socalled "brother" had lived under the same roof for nearly a decade. Lily only told me all this after we got married.
In our eight years of marriage, her father's side of the family barely kept in touch with us. I had only met Ryan twice in my life—once being at our wedding.
If they were biological siblings, their kids looking alike would make sense. But they didn't share a single drop of blood. So why on earth did Ryan's son look exactly like my son?
How could I not suspect something? I was a complete mess for the rest of the afternoon. As soon as my shift ended, I drove straight home. My son was already home from school.
The moment I walked in, I saw him sitting at the coffee table in the living room, doing his homework. "Daddy!" Leo was always a sweet boy.
Seeing me, he dropped his pencil and ran to hug my waist. Looking at his innocent, familiar face, I couldn't help but picture the boy from this afternoon.
My wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner. I chatted with Leo for a bit, then walked toward the kitchen.
Leaning against the doorframe, I tried to sound casual. "Hey babe, the strangest thing happened to me today.
You won't believe it." "I was driving by Riverside Elementary at noon and saw a boy who looked exactly like Leo." "Seriously, I couldn't tell them apart.
I actually tried to grab him and almost got arrested as a kidnapper by the crowd..." Lily didn't pay much attention at first. But as I finished, her body stiffened.
The spatula slipped from her hand and clattered loudly onto the stove. My heart sank into a dark, cold abyss.
Opening · Chapter 3
"Whoa, careful. See? I didn't get arrested. What are you so nervous about?" Though my mind was screaming, I kept my voice completely calm.
I even forced a small chuckle to test her. "But seriously, that kid looks so much like Leo, which means he looks exactly like you.
If you took him out, people would definitely think you gave birth to him." "Don't make stupid jokes like that." A flash of pure panic crossed Lily’s eyes.
Her expression was incredibly strained. She clearly didn't want to talk about it. After a curt response, she practically shoved me out of the kitchen. "Go, go wash up.
Dinner's almost ready. Tell Leo to wash his hands." I stepped back into the living room. On the outside, I was perfectly calm. On the inside, a hurricane was ripping me apart.
It felt as if an invisible dagger had been plunged deep into my chest. Ryan’s reaction at noon was guilty enough. Now, Lily was acting the exact same way.
Even a fool would know something was deeply wrong here. No wonder her father’s family never visited us after we got married. They weren't being distant.
They were terrified of me finding out their sick secret! I had always given Lily my full respect and trust.
I never asked about her past, and I worked myself to the bone to provide for this family.
Only now did I realize that our "happy, peaceful marriage" was nothing but a joke I played on myself. Did she seriously have a child with her stepmother's son before she married me?
The thought made me physically sick. On one hand, their stepsibling relationship made this boundarycrossing affair feel incredibly taboo and disgusting.
On the other hand, the existence of that child meant I could never look at my marriage the same way again. During dinner, I kept my head down, eating in silence.
My unusual quietness quickly drew Lily's attention. "Ethan, what's wrong?" She put down her fork and looked at me suspiciously. "Are you feeling sick?" "No, I was just thinking about your dad." I seized the opportunity to dig deeper. "And your stepbrother, Ryan.
He's in his midthirties now, right? I realized we never got invited to a wedding or anything. Did he ever get married and have kids?" Lily froze, her grip on her glass tightening.
She tried to play it cool, picking up some food. "You know how controlling my stepmother, Helen, is." "My dad didn't keep in touch with us much because of her.
He just wanted some peace in his old age." "As for Ryan, he found someone the year we got married. They just never had a big wedding reception." "Anyway, let's not talk about him.
We aren't even bloodrelated.
He clearly doesn't want anything to do with us." "Once my dad passes away, we probably won't even consider him family anymore..." She sounded so indifferent.
But her actions betrayed her. She kept playing with her food, swirling it around her plate without taking a single bite. She was terrified. My heart grew colder.
I casually asked, "Oh, I see. Did Ryan have a boy or a girl?" "What?" Lily’s hand shook, almost dropping her fork.
She looked up at me with guilty, shifting eyes. "Why are you asking about that? What does it have to do with us? He... he had a daughter."
Opening · Chapter 4
A daughter? I let out a silent, bitter laugh. I lowered my head and kept eating, refusing to say another word.
If it had nothing to do with us, why did you just look me in the eye and lie to me? Lily, oh Lily. You really think I’m an idiot, don't you?
The warmth in my chest was completely gone, replaced by a freezing numbness. But I didn't confront her right there. After all, these were still just my deductions.
Aside from hearing that boy call Ryan "Daddy," I had no hard evidence. I decided to investigate quietly. I needed proof before I laid my cards on the table.
After dinner, I washed the dishes and went to take a shower. When I stepped out of the bathroom, I saw Lily standing on the balcony, making a phone call. Her back was turned to me.
One hand held the phone tight to her ear, while her other hand gestured wildly in the air. We had been married for eight years. I knew her body language.
She only gestured like that when she was furious and losing her mind. Moreover, the sliding glass door to the balcony was tightly shut.
Why would she lock herself out there just to make a call? Who was she hiding from? That night, I slept with my back turned completely away from her.
The next morning, I bumped into our downstairs neighbor, Harvey, in the elevator. "Hey, Ethan," Harvey said, patted my shoulder with a sympathetic look. "Look, as a married man, let me give you some advice.
You gotta compromise with women. No marriage is perfect. Just apologize and move on." Harvey was a good guy, just trying to be a peacemaker.
I played along, keeping my face neutral, and carefully probed for info. Harvey, having no filter, spilled everything. Apparently, he was smoking on his balcony last night.
Because our apartments were stacked, Lily’s frantic voice drifted right down to him from our balcony.
He heard her screaming things like, "The kid has to change schools immediately!" Harvey thought we were having a massive fight over Leo's schooling, which was why he was trying to counsel me.
I nodded politely, thanking him for the advice. But inside, my mind was violently spinning. Last night, I suspected Lily was calling her stepbrother. Now, it was confirmed.
The "kid" she was frantically trying to transfer to another school was Riverside Elementary's Lucas. Lily knew I was suspicious.
To prevent the truth from coming out, she was desperately forcing Ryan to move the boy. I couldn't wait any longer. I decided to take the initiative.
I called my office, took a personal day off, and drove straight to Riverside Elementary.
Since I had my government work ID, I easily made up an excuse to get past the school security.
After some quick inquiries at the administration office, I got the boy's registered name: Lucas Jenkins. Parents: Ryan Jenkins. Relationship: Father.
I found the classroom of the secondgrade teacher. I introduced myself as Lucas's uncle. I even asked the teacher to call Lucas out of the classroom for a minute.
Under the guise of a "family update," I took a quick photo of me and the boy on my phone. With the evidence in hand, I left the school.
Since I had the day off, I drove straight back home. "Why are you home?" I had only been sitting on the couch for a few minutes when Lily walked in with groceries.
Seeing me home on a weekday, she froze. Then, sensing the heavy, suffocating aura around me, her voice trembled. "What's wrong?
Don't you have work today?" "I just came back from Riverside Elementary." I unlocked my phone, opened the photo gallery, and turned the screen toward her. "Take a look.
Doesn't he look exactly like our Leo?" "I asked the school. His name is Lucas Jenkins. He's your stepbrother Ryan's son." "But last night, you told me he had a daughter...
Why did you lie to me?"
