Opening · Chapter 1
The day the approval for Lucas Corporation's IPO came through, everyone assumed the VP position was mine for the taking. After all, I wasn't just his fiancée.
I was the one who singlehandedly pulled him back from the brink of ruin. But at the celebration party, a reporter asked, "Mr.
Grey, who do you have in mind for the company's Vice President role?" Lucas's gaze swept right past me and landed on the gorgeous assistant beside him. "The company is on the rise.
We should give the younger generation a chance." "For the VP position, I've decided on Miss Rose." In an instant, gloating glances from the entire room converged on me.
I straightened my spine, said nothing, and walked out calmly. Lucas probably forgot that the company's entire success was because of me.
But from now on, I don't want the VP position, and I don't want him. "Serena, are you walking out just to spite me?" "Be back in ten minutes, or don't blame me for not even leaving you the Director position." Lucas's messages popped up one after another.
I just shut off my screen. So furious I could laugh. So in his mind, my five years of sacrifice were only worth a measly Director title.
Even Rose, who had only been with the company for three months, could outrank me by two levels. If that's the case, why should I go back and humiliate myself?
With my track record of being top in sales five years straight, I'm not worried about finding another place to go. "Take me home," I instructed my assistant. "Also, prepare my resignation letter.
I'm done with Grey Corporation." The car sped off fast. The cold wind whipped through the car, chilling the frustration in my heart into a vast, icy emptiness.
My phone kept vibrating, Lucas's messages relentless. "Serena! Where's your dignity? It's just a VP position. Is it really worth throwing a tantrum over?" "You'll be Mrs.
Grey in seven days anyway. The whole company will be yours. Why are you even bothered by this?" Yeah, our wedding was set for seven days later.
All our friends and family had been notified. Everyone was congratulating us on finally tying the knot after our sevenyear marathon of love.
But right now, the only thing replaying in my mind was the look Lucas gave Rose— Tender, lingering, and full of adoration. The exact same way he looked at me seven years ago.
Suddenly, I didn't want to get married anymore. "Am I the one being petty, or are you just playing favorites?" I grabbed my phone and texted back, "The wedding is off.
I don't want to marry a man whose heart belongs to someone else." "Also, don't bother keeping a position for me at the company.
I've decided to resign." The stream of messages from his end instantly stopped. I let out a sigh of relief. For five years, I asked for nothing in return.
I didn't even take a salary, working for Lucas for free. From now on, I could finally live for myself. Once home, I started packing.
I put my belongings into my suitcase, piece by piece. This was the home Lucas and I were supposed to share after our wedding.
I had envisioned a future with him in every corner of this place. Tears slid down my cheeks uncontrollably.
Beautiful memories from the past flashed before my eyes one after another. Until half an hour later, in the drawer of Lucas's study, I found a white lace thong, stained.
Instantly, the ache in my heart subsided. So, he and Rose had already crossed the line a long time ago. Their relationship had long since become physical.
And right here, in our home. I wiped away my tears just as my phone rang. "Hello, Miss Serena, this is Victor from Titan Group." "I heard you're leaving Grey Corporation.
I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining us?" "I'll offer you our best package—shares, positions, I won't be stingy." Victor, Lucas's sworn rival.
The man who had repeatedly used Titan Group to steal competitive bids from Grey Corporation.
I gripped my phone, hesitated for only a moment, and then nodded. "Okay, I accept." "But I still have some loose ends to tie up at Grey. I'll report to you in seven days, Mr.
Victor." Victor’s voice was knowing. "Miss Serena, I await your arrival." After hanging up, the knot in my chest loosened a little. I was never one to swallow my pride and take it.
Lucas betrayed me, so I was going to make him taste the same medicine. I just wondered, without its pillar of support, how much longer could Grey Corporation last?
Opening · Chapter 2
After that, I took my packed bags and went home.
As if sensing something was wrong, my grandma made me a bowl of my favorite pear soup and brought it to my room. "Serena, why did you suddenly move back home?" "Did you have a fight with Lucas?
Did he bully you?" My eyes reddened. "Grandma, if Lucas and I don't get married, will you be mad at me?" My parents passed away early, and my grandma raised me.
Her biggest wish was to see me settle down and start a family. So, she always valued my relationship with Lucas a lot. But after a moment, the expected scolding didn't come.
Instead, a gentle hand came up and softly wiped my tears away. "Silly child, why would I ever blame you?" "This morning, Lucas called me to tattle, saying you embarrassed him and were being jealous for no reason.
I shut him right down." "My granddaughter is treasured by me.
If it weren't for your feelings, I would have never wanted to see you suffer for a man who doesn't deserve you." Her words hit me, and a wave of intense bitterness and sorrow washed over me.
Along with a flicker of unspeakable anger. Lucas actually had the nerve to call and complain to my grandma?
My grandma's health is already poor; she has a heart condition and can't handle stress. If anything had happened to her, I would never have forgiven him!
I took my grandma's phone, wanting to block all of Lucas's contact info. Just to set my mind at ease.
But then I saw he had updated his Instagram. "Even if you can't do anything, I like you." The picture attached was of two hands tightly clasped together.
The wedding ring on Lucas's ring finger was glaringly obvious. I recognized it. That was Rose's hand.
She wore long, bright pink acrylic nails that I had once politely warned her about. "Nails this long break easily. They're not very practical for a caretaker role.
You might want to consider a different style." But Rose immediately went to Lucas to complain. "Does Miss Serena just not like me?
She's even trying to dictate my nails." Because of that, Lucas had a huge fight with me that day. "You're just not feminine at all, so you find anything beautiful an eyesore." "Do you want everyone around me to turn into a manly woman like you before you're happy?" I was stunned.
Once, I was also a woman who loved dressing up and looking beautiful. I only became more and more worn out because I drove myself into the ground working for free for Lucas.
I remember when I was so stressed over a bid that my hair started falling out in clumps, Lucas was by my side, tearfully promising, "Serena, I will never fail you in this life." So, vows only count when you're still deeply in love.
My thoughts pulled back to the present, and I calmly deleted all of Lucas's contact information.
That night, I got a call from him using Rose's phone number. "Serena, just to spite me, you actually blocked me and emptied the entire house?" "I don't care where you are, you come back to see me in half an hour, or this wedding is completely off!" Rose, beside him, chimed in with fake sympathy. "Lucas, don't be mad.
I'm sure Miss Serena is just acting impulsively." She took the phone and spoke "magnanimously." "Look, Lucas hasn't even held a grudge about you walking out at the press conference today, and he even specially saved the Director position for you." "Just take a step back and let it go.
Otherwise, this is just going to make everyone look bad." She said it as if a Director position could make up for my five years of blood, sweat, and tears. "Cut the act, Rose.
Don't you feel sick?" I was at my limit. "When you first joined the company, you came to me saying your family was struggling, so I promoted you to a special assistant position to look out for you." "Is stealing my man your way of repaying me?" With that, I hung up, blocked the number, and deleted it, all in one smooth motion.
After that, I sent a text to my core team still at Grey. "I'm leaving here and going to Titan. Is anyone willing to come with me?" I had personally trained all of them.
They were already indignant on my behalf. Now, hearing my words, they all chimed in. "We'll go wherever you go, Miss Serena!" "Exactly! Grey Corporation was built up by Miss Serena.
To give the VP role to a newbie is a slap in the face to everyone who's poured their heart into this company!" I smirked coldly.
Lucas, oh Lucas, seven days from now, when you're staring at a hollowedout shell of a company, I wonder what kind of mood you'll be in?
Opening · Chapter 3
I thought that Lucas and I would enter a cold war from then on. I never expected that the very next day, he'd show up at my house. "Serena, are you done with your tantrum?
Hurry up and come back with me." Lucas's eyes were filled with impatience. "A project at the company has hit a snag.
Come back and deal with it, and I'll let everything that happened before slide." I laughed coldly.
In the seven years we were together, through every fight, big or small, I was always the one to back down.
Now, the first time Lucas ever swallowed his pride, it was because he wanted me to come back and keep being his unpaid labor. "In your dreams. We're done.
Why should I still listen to you?" I pulled out the resignation letter my assistant had prepared and threw it right at him. "From now on, whether Grey Corporation lives or dies, it's none of my business." Seeing the resignation letter, Lucas's condescending expression finally flickered.
It was only then he realized I truly wanted to leave. "Serena! I don't agree to this." A hint of panic crept into Lucas's voice. "What gives you the right to just leave like that?
What do you take the company for?" "Besides, Grey is about to go public. The future is bright. What good does it do you to leave and start over?" "You're 27 this year.
Spend another five years grinding, and you'll be a complete old hag. Who's going to want you then?" My heart went completely cold.
So, Lucas thought I was getting old and had no other options, which was why he disrespected me.
At that moment, I felt a profound sense of doubt about my taste in men. "Don't worry about me. Get out." I spoke without any expression.
Unfortunately for Lucas, I'd have to disappoint him. By leaving him, I was only moving on to better options.
Seeing my resolve, Lucas stood up angrily. "Serena, why are you so stubborn? Do you have to go after a young girl like Rose?" "She saved my life.
That's why I gave her the VP position. Can't you just try to see it from my perspective?" I froze. "What do you mean?" "A while ago on a business trip, I drank a spiked drink.
If it weren't for Rose... using herself as the antidote, I wouldn't have made it back." Lucas's face was full of emotion. "When I woke up, she even offered to not hold me responsible, saying she just wanted me to be okay." "For such a debt of gratitude, giving her a VP position isn't too much, is it?" His words hung in the air, and the room fell into a deathly silence.
I raised my hand and slapped him across the face, hard. "Lucas, you're disgusting." "What 'using herself as an antidote'? Isn't that just cheating?
You even have Rose's underwear in your study at home, and you have the nerve to dress it up so nobly." Lucas's cheek instantly flushed a bright red and swelled up.
A flash of guilt darted through his eyes. "Let me explain, it's not what you think." "Serena, you're the only one in my heart, I swear. But who doesn't like young and pretty things?
It was just a momentary lapse." "But the person I want to marry has always been you." Just then, the door suddenly swung open.
My grandma had been standing outside, listening for who knows how long. She hobbled in on her cane and started hitting Lucas. "Get out!
As long as I'm alive, I will never allow you to go near my granddaughter." "She wasted seven years on you, and you still have the nerve to be so shameless?" Lucas could only flee in a sorry state.
My grandma's expression was terrible. She sat on the sofa, clutching her chest. "Serena, you've been wronged." "It's all Grandma's fault.
I should have seen Lucas for the bad man he is sooner." In the next second, my grandma's expression suddenly changed. She slipped off the sofa and fell heavily to the floor.
Opening · Chapter 4
I rushed over to help her up, tears streaming down my face in fear. "Grandma, please, you have to be okay!" When the ambulance arrived, I went with her to the emergency hospital.
But when I went to pay the surgery fees, I was told my card had insufficient funds. Lucas had frozen my bank card.
He called to threaten me. "Serena, how can you let our personal issues affect the company?" "Until the project's problems are resolved, I won't unfreeze your card.
Think it over." When we were together, to make it easier to manage the company's accounts, my bank cards were all linked under Lucas's name.
Now, it was a weapon he was using against me. I was trembling with rage. "My grandma is in the hospital! She needs surgery.
Unfreeze my card, now!" "If anything happens to her, I will never forgive you." Right then, I could clearly hear Rose's voice in the background. "Miss Serena, you're actually making up a story about your grandma being hospitalized just to get money?" "And besides, Lucas was already injured by your grandma.
How can you be so heartless?" Lucas, who had been slightly hesitant, instantly believed her. "Yeah, your grandma hit me with her cane.
My leg still hurts." "Serena, I didn't know you had no morals, lying to me about your grandma being sick." "I'm not giving you any money, unless you come back to the company right now and fix the project problem." I glanced in the direction of my grandma's hospital room.
Left with no other choice, I rushed back to the company as fast as I could. "I'll fix your problem.
You unfreeze my card." Lucas was smug. "Serena, you were so definite, but in the end, you can't live without me, can you?" "Fix the problem properly, then get on your knees and apologize.
The wedding is still on in five days." I ignored him. My feelings for him were long dead.
I tolerated it and told him to transfer some money first to the hospital so my grandma could have her surgery. "Otherwise, I will absolutely not help you with any project problems." Lucas was skeptical. "Serena, are you telling the truth?" He finally relented and sent Rose to pay the bill. "Serena, you'd better not be lying to me." "Or else, an apology won't be enough to settle this." But soon after, a call from the doctor came through, his voice panicked. "Miss Serena, something's happened!
Your grandma saw someone, and her condition suddenly worsened." "She... she's stopped breathing..." When I saw the photo the doctor sent, I froze on the spot.
Rose was standing right next to my grandma's hospital bed, a vicious expression still plastered on her face. My whole body was shaking.
I stormed into Lucas's office, grabbed him by the collar, and screamed, "What did you tell Rose to say?!" "My grandma... she's dead... You murderer!
I'll make you pay with your life!"
