Opening · Chapter 1
In the Campus Eats delivery group chat on Snapchat, I was the one with the fewest deliveries.Lily, on the other hand, had the highest delivery count and was the absolute darling of our department manager.I watched Lily brag in the chat, posting screenshots of how many orders she completed and how much cash she made today.I glanced at it and ignored it.But Lily wouldn’t let it go. She tagged me directly: "@Chloe, you're dead last again today. Campus Eats doesn't keep freeloaders around!"Looking at how desperately Lily wanted to kick me out of the delivery group,I grinned and dialed my dad's number. "Hey, old man. I want to report some serious conflict of interest. The manager of your dining hall delivery service is trading orders for sexual favors!"I had just finished my last delivery of the day.I opened Snapchat to see if there were any new orders in our Campus Eats group chat.Instead, I saw Lily posting a screenshot of her daily earnings."Guys! So sorry, but I got first place again today! 😜""@Carter, babe, are there any more orders? I want to make some extra cash today so I can buy you Starbucks tonight! ❤️"The "Carter" she was talking about was Carter偉, our campus delivery manager.Carter didn't disappoint his little favorite. He immediately assigned several highpaying delivery orders directly to her. This was completely against the rules. There were still a dozen other students waiting in the queue, but Carter had skipped all of them just to give the orders to Lily.Nobody dared to complain in the official group chat.Instead, everyone started trashtalking them in our private group chat."Those two are shameless. Lily must be his sugar baby. Why else does she get all the good orders?""You got it wrong. Lily isn't his sugar baby—she's probably his boss in bed!""I live in the same dorm as Lily. Last night, I heard her on FaceTime with Carter for over an hour!"The campus delivery system was supposed to be a mutually beneficial program.Students who didn't want to walk to the dining hall ordered food through the app.Carter was supposed to assign those orders fairly to the student delivery workers, who made a buck or two per delivery for some extra pocket money. If Lily were actually faster than everyone else, nobody would complain. But Carter's favoritism was so blatant that everyone knew there was something dirty going on.While I was chilling, scrolling through my phone with a "take it or leave it" attitude,Lily suddenly tagged me in the main chat."@Chloe, why are you last again? You're thirty orders behind me. Why are you so lazy every single day?""If Carter wasn't such a nice guy, he would have fired you ages ago!""How about this: as a punishment, you buy Carter and me Starbucks tonight!"What the hell?I opened the app and checked my deliveries.I had only done ten deliveries today, earning less than fifteen dollars. And she wanted me to buy them both sevendollar coffees? No freaking way.I fired back in the chat."Are you out of your mind? Lazy? Carter gave all the orders to you. What am I supposed to deliver, air?""If you want to suck up to Carter, leave me out of your pickme drama. It’s pathetic."Right then, Carter entered the chat.He tagged everyone: "@Everyone, stop delivering. All of you, get to the dining hall office right now. I won't tolerate such toxic language in my department!"
Opening · Chapter 2
I didn't care about Carter's passiveaggressive summons. I slowly walked to the convenience store, bought an iced water, and took my sweet time heading to the dining hall.
On my way, my dad texted me: "Hey, sweetie! How much did you make today? I'm visiting your campus dining hall in a few days.
You better treat your dad to a nice dinner!" I rolled my eyes. My dad was a total capitalist.
He literally owned the entire dining services company that contracted with the university, yet he made his own daughter work as a delivery girl for pocket change.
I texted back: "Food, food, food, that’s all you think about! Exploiting your own daughter—worst dad ever!" By the time I reached the delivery office, the tension inside was thick.
Seeing me walk in while still scrolling on my phone, Carter let out a cold snort. Lily immediately stood up and said sneeringly, "Oh, look who decided to show up.
Our resident princess, Chloe. Last in deliveries, and last to the meeting!" I wasn't about to let her slide.
Ignoring the warning looks from the other students, I replied, "Oh, absolutely. No one can compete with you, Lily.
You're number one in deliveries, and number one at kissing ass." Lily's face fell instantly. Before she could snap back, Carter lost his temper.
He slammed his fist on the desk, knocking his cup of looseleaf tea right onto the floor. "Chloe Vance! Have I been too nice to you?
Don't think I won't fire you just because you're a girl! All you do is bring drama and toxicity to this department!" Me? Toxic? What a joke.
He was still holding a grudge because I had rejected his "suggestion" to buy him a free steak dinner last week.
Seeing the smug look return to Lily's face, I pretended to look panicked and bent down to help clean up the spilled tea. "Oh, Carter, I'm so sorry! Please don't be mad.
And definitely don't ruin this expensive tea!" "Lily spent a fortune buying this highend blend just for you.
She's standing right here—it'd be a shame to waste her little tribute, right?" Boom. I exposed her little bribe right in front of everyone.
Carter's face turned beet red, his fists clenching. Lily panicked and quickly tried to explain, "Chloe, stop lying! Carter didn't ask me to buy him anything.
I just saw how hard he works assigning us orders, and I wanted to show my appreciation!" I nodded, making a mocking face. "Right, right.
Carter sits in his airconditioned office all day, drinking Starbucks that students buy him. Truly backbreaking labor.
He definitely needs some premium tea to digest all that brownnosing." A few delivery kids in the back couldn't help but snicker.
Looking at Carter and Lily’s furious, red faces, I actually wondered if I was being too mean. After all, they technically worked for my dad.
Opening · Chapter 3
Before I could selfreflect, Leah, another one of Carter's sycophants, stood up. She said, "Chloe, you're out of line! Carter is our manager. Who are you to disrespect him?
Apologize to him right now!" Normally, I have a sharp tongue and never back down. But I stayed quiet this time. Leah was our class president and tight with our college advisor.
If I made an enemy out of her, she could make my academic life miserable. Seeing my silence, Leah got even bolder.
She pointed at my outfit. "Carter has told us multiple times that female delivery girls should wear short shorts or skirts for a professional look.
You’re the only one who wears long jeans. Do you think his rules don't apply to you?" Lily chimed in, "Exactly! You're the only troublemaker here. Look at everyone else.
We all follow Carter's dress code." I looked around the room. Sure enough, all the other girls were wearing short shorts or mini skirts. I was the only one in fulllength jeans.
Before I could call out this incredibly creepy "dress code," Carter leaned back in his chair and banged on his desk. "Look, I'm a straightforward guy.
I treat you all like my own daughters. I don't play mind games. If I want to look at your legs, I'll straightup tell you to wear shorts.
If I want to check out your figures, I'll tell you to put your hands on your hips." "I really don't understand why you, Chloe, have so much hostility toward an honest, open guy like me." I was utterly dumbfounded.
How did he manage to spin blatant sexual harassment into being "honest and open"? Leah eagerly agreed. "Exactly! Carter is so genuine.
Unlike those creeps on campus who secretly stare at us, Carter is just upfront about it. It’s actually refreshing!" Lily nodded. "Right?
When Carter looks at our legs, it's totally wholesome and professional. When other guys do it, it makes me sick!" Wow. These two just turned a creep into a saint.
I clearly hadn't insulted them enough. The other delivery kids looked furious but kept gesturing at me to let it go. They needed this job to pay for tuition and groceries.
But I didn't care about this job. I didn't need the money. Still, I didn't want Carter taking his anger out on the others because of me.
So, I forced a fake smile. "You're so right, Carter. Forgive me, I'm just a dumb, naive college student. I'll do better.
Please forgive me this once!" Carter let out a smug grunt. "Hmm." Leah and Lily weren't satisfied. "A verbal apology? Carter just gave you a life lesson.
Shouldn't you buy him a Starbucks to show your gratitude?" Before I could reply, Carter waved his hand. "I wouldn't dare drink her coffee.
I'll stick to the tea Lily brewed for me." Lily practically skipped over to pour him a cup. Carter looked at me condescendingly. "I know your family isn't doing well, Chloe.
Your clothes are always so plain, and you clearly need this job. As long as you behave, I won't make things hard for you." "After all, my fatherly instincts...
I treat you all like my own daughters."
Opening · Chapter 4
I looked down at my clothes and felt completely speechless. Their condescension was hilarious. My "plain" clothes were actually highend designer pieces my dad bought me.
I just preferred neutral, unbranded styles, which apparently made me look broke to these idiots. But I didn't bother explaining.
As we waited in the office, Lily suddenly turned to Carter with a shy smile. "Carter, babe, are there any other young, successful guys like you in the department?
Can you set me up with a boyfriend?" If I didn't know she already had a boyfriend at another college, I might have actually believed her innocent act.
Carter sighed dramatically. "Well, that's tough. Guys as successful as me are hard to find." "Lily, you're a smart girl.
Looking for a sugar daddy at your age—no wonder you're the top deliverer!" Leah laughed. "I think Carter is perfect. You don't have a girlfriend, Carter.
Do you think Lily has a chance?" Lily playfully punched Carter's shoulder. "Stop it, you two! Carter, just give me an order so I can leave. You're teasing me!" I almost gagged.
Is this really happening? Just then, Hector, the dining hall general manager, ran in, drenched in sweat. "Listen up! The big boss, Mr.
Vance, is visiting the campus dining hall today for an inspection. Get ready!" Mr. Vance. My dad.
Sure enough, a few minutes later, I was sitting on a plastic stool in the dining hall crowd. My dad stood on the stage, speaking into a microphone, looking incredibly sharp.
His eyes scanned the crowd. He was looking for me. I immediately ducked my head, trying to hide.
If he spotted me, he'd brag to my mom all weekend about how I was "learning the family business from the ground up." I kept my head low. Lily noticed and hissed, "Sit up straight!
Have some selfrespect. Don't embarrass our department in front of Mr. Vance!" Carter heard her and frowned at me. "Chloe, do you have to be a rebel everywhere?
Are you trying to ruin my reputation in front of the big boss?" I had no choice. I sat up straight. Instantly, my dad's eyes locked onto me. He grinned and gave me a subtle nod.
Carter, who was sitting right in front of me, thought the nod was for him. He bowed frantically, a smile splitting his face. He looked ready to throw himself at my dad's feet.
