Opening · Chapter 1
I stood outside holding a doll.
The door was half open, and the conversation inside drifted clearly into my ears. “Mom, do I never have to go to the hospital again?” My daughter Sophie’s voice rang out. “Yes,” Claire said gently. “Now that the plot is over, it won’t go off course anymore.
Everything will get back on track, and you won’t be punished.” She was only this gentle when she was facing Sophie. “What about Uncle Blake?” Sophie asked anxiously. “It’s all Dad’s fault.
That’s why Uncle Blake can only sneak in to see me every time.” “If there were no Dad, we wouldn’t have to live like this, and Mom could stay with Uncle Blake forever.” “Since the plot is over, when are you and Dad getting divorced?” I squeezed the doll in my hand so hard that my fingers dug into my flesh.
It hurt. Then the room fell silent for a long moment. “We’ll get divorced.” The three words were firm and final. “Your birthday is in a few days.
We’ll talk openly then.” Claire’s voice sounded completely cold. It sent a chill straight through me.
Five years ago, to save my wife and daughter, who were both in a vegetative state, I made a deal with the system. I got randomly thrown into a tragic novel.
Every step I took had to follow the original plot exactly, with not the slightest deviation. Otherwise, I would be punished.
At best, my memory would deteriorate and I’d lose my mind. At worst, I would be separated from my wife and daughter in the real world forever.
Of course, if the plot went smoothly, I’d also get rewards that could help my wife and daughter wake up. I wasn’t what you’d call a great host.
I met Claire when I was twenty, and at twentyfive, my wife and I had Sophie. Just as I was about to finish the plot, the female lead, Claire, still ended up despising me.
My memory started to regress. When it got bad, I might not even remember what happened a second ago. Sophie was my biological daughter.
She would be hurt too, but nowhere near as badly as I was. Back then Sophie cried every day.
She thought something was wrong with her brain, and her classmates at school mocked her for having memory loss, so she stayed home from school on leave.
She became depressed and got sick constantly. I felt awful for her, so even though it was risky, I told Claire about the system. If she left me, her memory would get even worse.
She might even lose her mind. Only after the plot ended could we escape all of this. Claire had no choice but to stay with me.
Every now and then, if we had an argument, Sophie and I would both get sick. I owed Sophie a lot. But she never once said a bad word about me.
She took her medicine obediently and became very sensible. Our relationship gradually got better and better.
Finally, a few days ago, the system suddenly notified me that the plot had completely ended. I told Claire the news right away.
From now on, none of us would have to worry about the system’s existence anymore. We could live however we wanted and do whatever we wanted.
And I had received the final reward, which would let me choose whether to stay or leave this world. I didn’t want them to live here alone. And I couldn’t bear to leave Sophie.
So I discussed with the system whether I could stay with Sophie until she turned eighteen. I never expected their actions to slice me open like this.
Opening · Chapter 2
I tossed the gift in my hand straight into the trash.
Then I pushed the door open and walked in, looking at them quietly and calmly saying, “I agree to the divorce.” After that, I looked at Sophie, who was lying on the bed. “Sophie, I’m sorry.
I never knew you liked Uncle Blake, and I also never knew you... didn’t actually like me.” “It was me who dragged you into the plot and made you suffer with me.
I’m sorry.” Sophie blinked, a trace of anger on her face. “Why were you eavesdropping on what Mom and I were saying?
You’re really so annoying!” Even though I had already braced myself for this. When she said I was annoying right in front of me, my heart still twisted in pain.
Claire’s face showed no extra emotion. She simply followed up on Sophie’s words. “Fine. I’ll have my lawyer send you the divorce papers.
If there’s anything you want to add, you can tell me.” “I hope you can move fast. I owe Blake too much. I want to be with him properly.” Sophie glared at me. “Exactly.
Uncle Blake is clearly so good. I can’t wait for him to become my dad.” “It’s all your fault.
You insisted on driving him away back then!” “Mom and I can forgive him, so why can’t you?” Every word from Sophie made my heart ache.
A year ago, Blake had tried several times to hurt Sophie. Even though the plot didn’t force Blake to leave, I still made him go. What I thought was for her own good had worked.
But now it seemed they had been secretly in contact all along. The only one kept in the dark was me. [Warning! Warning!] [An abnormality has been detected at the end of the plot.
Character settings are off!] [Host, please correct it as soon as possible!] The system’s voice spun around in my head. What was going on? Wasn’t the plot already over?
This time seemed different from every other time before.
Why did my chest hurt so much, like I couldn’t even breathe? “What’s going on?” I asked urgently, “Hasn’t the plot already finished?” [Sorry... an abnormality has been detected.
We’ve probably all been tricked.] I froze for a moment, then suddenly understood what the system meant by tricked. “If...” [Don’t worry.
Even if this repair fails, the reward for the last completed plot will still be issued to you.
This is a deviation between the system and the NPC.] The knot in my chest suddenly loosened. My thoughts came back to me, and Claire and Sophie were staring at me nervously.
They knew that every time I frowned and muttered to myself, I was talking to the system. “What happened? Didn’t the plot already end?
Why is the system still here?” Sophie looked even more nervous. “Is my illness not going to get better?” They clearly knew that if the plot hadn’t ended, the pain I was carrying was the greatest.
And yet not a single word of concern was meant for me. My heart went cold, and I forced a smile. “It’s fine.
It won’t affect your normal lives.” Because if I gave up on fixing this, I would lose my mind and be forcibly sent out of this world.
Only then did the worried expressions on Claire and Sophie’s faces ease a little. “That’s good. That’s good.” After that, Claire didn’t waste a single day.
She filed for divorce immediately. She couldn’t wait through the coolingoff period.
After getting the divorce certificate, I started packing my clothes, preparing to leave the home I had lived in for five years. Before I left, I still saw Sophie one last time.
I asked her whether she would be sad if I really went away.
Sophie was playing with the doll in her hands, not even looking up. “Why are you so naggy, like a woman?” “You have no ability, and you can’t even compare to Uncle Blake’s finger.
Why are you asking me these pointless questions and embarrassing yourself?” I froze in place, unable to believe those words had come from my own daughter’s mouth.
I had told them that if the plot went off track, I’d lose my mind, but I had never said that I would disappear.
Probably because disappearance wasn’t even something they could imagine. “Yeah. From now on, Dad won’t ask these pointless questions anymore.” “Never again...”
Opening · Chapter 3
I reached out and patted her head. “But this time, Dad really is leaving.
The kind of leaving where I never come back.” “You’re really enough!” Sophie suddenly grabbed the doll in her hand and threw it at me, her face full of disgust. “If you’re going to get lost, then leave sooner.
Better yet, never come back and ruin the life Uncle Blake, Mom, and I are supposed to have as a family of three!” The doll hit my forehead perfectly. I touched it.
It seemed to have split open a little, but I didn’t feel any pain at all.
I thought that maybe, as we were nearing the end, the system no longer needed to make my memory deteriorate.
But in doing so, it let me remember many things I didn’t want to remember. Like this scene right now. My heart hurt so much it felt like I couldn’t breathe.
I slowly stood up and said with a smile, “From now on, Blake will be with you. You’ll probably never think of me again.” I quietly closed the door.
Just after I left the neighborhood, a Range Rover stopped in front of me. The window rolled down slowly. I saw a sharply defined face. It was Blake.
The man Claire had never been willing to let suffer even the slightest grievance. Originally, as his substitute, I had come into this world to replace his place in Claire’s heart.
Clearly, I hadn’t done that.
Instead, I had made Claire even less willing to let him go. “Ryan, long time no see,” Blake said with a smile, the ring on his ring finger especially eyecatching. “Claire and I are planning to get married.
You have to come witness our happiness then!” I stared at the diamond ring in his hand. It was a matching set with the one in Claire’s hand.
The system had originally wanted her to put it on my finger, but Claire wasn’t willing. She thought someone like me didn’t deserve such a pure ring.
She went against the plot and personally put the ring on Blake’s hand. That same night, I was punished by the system.
Not only did my memory deteriorate, I also somehow fell and broke my leg. I spent a full three months recovering in the hospital.
My thoughts came back to me, and I looked at him with a smile, saying congratulations. Just as I was about to leave, my steps staggered a few times.
It felt like my body was getting more and more unreal. Probably because the plot had deviated too much.
I thought I probably wouldn’t last more than a few days before I left. “I heard from Sophie that you just threatened her with disappearing to force her to choose?” He smiled disdainfully. “Now that the plot’s over, you can’t keep trying to force her to stay by your side.” I froze for a moment.
So he knew about the system too. Claire really didn’t hold anything back from him. But now, I didn’t care.
After all, nothing I was supposed to get would change, and I wasn’t going to fix the offtrack plot either. This world wasn’t going to exist for much longer anyway.
After moving out, I didn’t look for a house. Instead, I checked into a fivestar hotel.
For the last stretch of time, I wanted to treat myself a little better. [Host, the plot unfolds from your perspective.] I heard the system’s voice, but I didn’t pay it any mind.
I casually opened my phone. A news alert suddenly popped up on the screen. It was an interview with Blake and Claire. Both of them were smiling happily in the video.
Love is always full of guilt and debt. In this moment, that feeling suddenly became something you could see and touch.
Because she felt sorry for Blake, Claire was in such a hurry to give him a title. [Host, you must attend Blake and Claire’s wedding.] I was stunned for a second. “Why?
This is completely off the original plot. Don’t tell me you’re breaking down?” [The system has bug fixes. The host doesn’t need to worry about that.
You only need to worry about yourself now.] I was momentarily speechless. [Please witness their relationship as soon as possible.] After speaking, the system added, [Very soon, you’ll be able to leave this place.]
Opening · Chapter 4
I answered with a quiet mm. On the day of the wedding, I wore a neat suit and went to attend Claire’s wedding. The wedding was held in a grand cathedral.
It looked solemn and imposing, as if it represented the holiness of their relationship, untouchable by any stain.
On the way there, the system specifically told me to put on my mask, worried that I might be targeted and embarrassed in a place like this. [Host...] I smiled. “It’s fine, really.
I know you’re worried about me, but you know I’ll be going back eventually. If they do this, it’ll actually make it easier for me when I return.
I won’t have so much baggage.” Thinking of that, I picked up a napkin from the table and folded it into a little bunny. “Back when I was home, I used to fold little bunnies all the time to make my daughter happy, and then I’d put a little candy inside to cheer her up.” I picked up the little bunny.
But this time, there was no candy inside anymore. Then a soft voice suddenly sounded from behind me. “Dad, why are you here?” I turned around.
Sophie was wearing a fluffy dress studded with flowers. She looked like a flower fairy. She was also carrying a flower basket. Inside it was a pair of rings.
I reached out to hug her. But she dodged me. My hand, still hanging in the air, felt a little awkward.
After a few seconds, I pulled it back. “Don’t tell me you’re here to ruin the wedding!” Her eyes were full of caution.
With that one sentence, everyone around us turned to look at me. A sharp pain shot through my heart, but I still smiled and said, “How could that be?
Uncle Blake specially invited me to his wedding.” She stared at me with her big round eyes, as if trying to judge whether I was telling the truth.
Suddenly, her gaze fell on the little bunny in my hand. “Dad, what’s that in your hand?” She looked curious and reached out to take it.
I moved it farther into the table. “Just something I folded on a whim.” “Can you give it to me, Dad?
I want to play with it.” “No, this isn’t Sophie’s toy.” At that moment, the little bunny on the table was suddenly picked up by someone.
I followed the line of sight and found Claire had somehow walked over.
Her face was full of contempt. “Ryan, using that kind of trick to win over my daughter’s favor isn’t going to make her go with you.” I frowned and stood up, taking the little bunny from Claire’s hand. “No, this was folded for my daughter.” At that, Claire’s expression turned even uglier. “Ryan, I think your brain’s gone bad.
Other than Sophie, where do you have a daughter?” “The last time, you used disappearing to scare Sophie.
What story are you making up this time?” “Are you going to say that once you disappear, you’ll leave us and go live with someone else?” The mockery in Claire’s eyes only grew stronger as she spoke. “Let me tell you, Ryan, since you chose to leave, even if you die it won’t affect the lives of our family of three!” I stayed silent for a long time before sitting back down.
She took Blake’s hand and left without looking back. People around us started pointing at me and whispering.
I ignored them and seriously watched the grand wedding ceremony that belonged to them. Blake led Claire, who was wearing a wedding dress, into the venue.
Under everyone’s watchful eyes, they hugged and kissed. Suddenly, I felt a pounding pain in my head, a bit like a migraine, and then my limbs started to go weak.
I forced myself to stay calm and watched the scene of them in love. Near the end, Sophie skipped over and delivered the flower basket to the two of them. [Warning! Warning!
The plot has seriously deviated. Please stop it immediately!]
