Opening · Chapter 1
Five years into our marriage, Marcus suddenly brought home his foster sister. "Chloe just went through a terrible breakup abroad," he said, gently wiping a tear from Chloe’s eye. "She has no family here.
She can stay with us and help take care of Leo." My fiveyearold son immediately ran over and hugged her legs. "I want Chloe!
She’s way prettier than Mommy!" Late that night, I stood outside the cracked door of the nursery, watching Marcus and Chloe tucking Leo in, one on each side of the bed.
My son’s whiny voice pierced my eardrums. "When are we going to kick that bad mommy out?" I looked down at the DNA test results that had just arrived on my phone and smiled.
I couldn't help but wonder—how spectacular would it be when these three realize they don't share a single drop of blood?
Five years after Marcus and I got married, his company finally went public. "Meeting Elena was the greatest blessing of my life," he said at the gala, wrapping his arm around my waist and kissing my forehead lovingly for the cameras.
The crowd erupted into applause. Everyone envied our pictureperfect romance. But three days later, he brought a woman home.
She wore a white sundress, her dark hair draping over her shoulders. Her eyes were red, making her look like a delicate lily drenched in rain.
She stood nervously next to Marcus, twisting the hem of her dress, and whispered timidly, "Hi, Elena." Marcus naturally pulled her close by the shoulder, his voice unbelievably tender. "Elena, this is Chloe.
She's my foster sister." I frowned. "Foster sister? How come I’ve never heard you mention her?" He sighed, his eyes filled with pity. "She’s been living abroad for years.
Some scumbag broke her heart and took her money, so she came back to heal. She has absolutely no one else here.
I thought she could stay with us." As he spoke, he gently brushed away a tear from Chloe's cheek and gave Leo a quick look.
Before I could say a word, my fiveyearold son dashed forward, wrapping his arms around Chloe's legs. He looked up, shouting excitedly, "Dad!
I want this pretty lady to play with me! She’s way prettier than Mommy!" Marcus smiled and patted Leo's head. "She's going to live with us from now on.
Are you happy?" "Yes!" Leo cheered, turning around to stick his tongue out at me. My heart sank. Chloe knelt down, gently caressing Leo’s cheek.
Her voice was sickly sweet. "You're so cute, Leo. I'll play with you every single day, okay?" Leo nodded eagerly, his eyes sparkling as if she were his real mother.
Marcus watched the scene with satisfaction. He turned to me and said, "Chloe is sweet and loves kids.
She can help watch Leo." "Sure," I heard myself reply, keeping my voice flat. "She can stay."
Opening · Chapter 2
On our wedding anniversary, I left work early to cook a nice dinner myself. When Marcus came home, I was plating the food.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.
His warm breath tickled my ear. "Thanks for cooking, honey." I tilted my head, leaning in to kiss him. "Ah—" A sharp sob suddenly cut us off.
Chloe stood at the kitchen entrance, her face pale. She clutched the fabric over her chest, tears streaming down her face. "II'm sorry...
I didn't mean to interrupt..." Marcus immediately let go of me, rushing over to support her. "What’s wrong?" She shook her head, her eyes bloodshot, looking utterly traumatized. "Seeing you two so close just... reminded me of my ex..." Before she could finish, she choked on her tears and went completely limp in Marcus's arms.
Marcus rubbed her back with concern, whispering sweet comforts. Then he turned to frown at me. "Elena, you know what she went through.
Can you be a little more considerate?" I stood frozen, my hands turning cold. This was absolutely ridiculous.
Leo appeared in the dining room out of nowhere, sticking his tongue out at me. "Gross! Mommy and Daddy are kissing! So disgusting!" I snapped my head toward him. "Leo!
Who taught you to talk like that?" Startled by my sharp tone, his lower lip quivered, and he burst into tears, throwing himself into Chloe's arms. "Chloe!
Mommy is being mean to me!" Chloe immediately knelt down to hug him. She looked up at me with accusing eyes. "Elena, he's just a child.
How can you yell at him like that?" Marcus frowned too. "Elena, is this because Leo isn't biologically yours..." He glanced at Leo, stopping himself. "Whatever.
Just watch your attitude. Don't be so harsh on him." I stared at the three of them.
Marcus had his arm around Chloe, Chloe was holding my son, and Leo was clutching her collar like she was his only savior.
At that moment, I felt like the only stranger in this house. During dinner, I tried to smooth things over by putting some of Leo's favorite shrimp on his plate.
But he pushed his plate away in disgust. "I don't want your food!
I want Chloe to feed me!" Chloe offered a sweet smile, picking up her fork to feed him. "Good boy, let me feed you." Leo ate happily, giving me a smug, triumphant look.
I put down my fork and said calmly, "Leo, eat by yourself. You're five years old." "No!" he screamed, kicking the table. "I want Chloe to feed me!
Go away!" Marcus frowned. "Elena, can you stop ruining the mood? Chloe is just trying to help.
Why are you making a big deal out of it?" Chloe chimed in, her voice soft and fragile. "Elena, I’m just happy Leo likes me. If you think I'm overstepping...
I won't do it again." Her eyes welled up with tears again, as if she were the victim of some great injustice. Marcus immediately grabbed her hand protectively. "Don't listen to her.
Leo loves you. Spend as much time with him as you want." Leo took the opportunity to jump into Marcus's arms.
He looked up with innocent eyes and asked, "Dad, can we get a new mommy?
I want Chloe to be my mommy!" Chloe feigned panic. "Leo, don't say that..." But the corner of her mouth twitched into a subtle smirk. Marcus didn't even correct him.
He just ruffled Leo's hair and chuckled, "You little rascal." I slowly put down my bowl, watching the three of them look like a happy family.
My heart was a mess of bitterness. "Sure," I said softly. "Since Leo likes Chloe so much, why don't you..." I paused, my gaze sweeping over Chloe. "Why don't you all go to the amusement park tomorrow?
It's been a while since Leo went." Marcus looked at me in surprise, clearly not expecting me to be so generous. "Don't you have work tomorrow?
You're not coming?" I forced a smile. "I'll pass. You guys have fun." After all, I needed to free up some time to look into a few things...
After dinner, Leo threw a tantrum, demanding that Marcus and Chloe sleep with him. Marcus brushed it off. "It's no big deal. We're just tucking him in.
Nothing is going to happen." He walked over, reaching out to drape his arm over my shoulder. "Elena, don't you trust me?" I stepped aside to avoid his touch.
My eyes fell on the cracked guest room door—Chloe was leaning against the frame in a silk slip nightgown, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "It's not about trust," I said, my voice cold. "He's five.
He needs to learn to sleep alone." "Elena," Chloe chimed in, "I didn't finish the bedtime story I was telling him last time." She looked down and rubbed her eyes, playing the victim. "It's my fault.
I shouldn't have promised him. I didn't mean to make you upset..." Leo immediately rushed over to cling to her leg. "I want Chloe!
I don't want Mommy!" Marcus sighed, his tone filled with blame. "Look, you made him cry. It's just for one night. Why do you have to be so difficult?" In the end, I backed down.
Standing at the door of the master bedroom, I listened to the laughter echoing from the nursery. "I'll send the samples tomorrow.
Please get me the results as soon as possible." After sending the text, I lay in bed, wide awake all night.
Opening · Chapter 3
At three in the morning, I shut my laptop and rubbed my aching temples. The latest financial reports from Vance Group were full of holes.
If it weren't for my father’s potential investment, I wouldn't have wasted a single second on them. I ended up crashing on my office couch, sleeping fitfully.
The next morning, my phone lit up. Notifications from the parent group chat on Snapchat kept popping up. [@All Members: Today is the parentchild field day at 9:30 AM!
Please be on time!] Field day was today? Neither Leo nor Marcus had mentioned a word to me. By the time I rushed to the school, the playground was already buzzing with cheers.
From a distance, I saw Leo sitting on Marcus's shoulders, giggling, while Chloe held a water bottle and gently wiped the sweat from their brows.
All three of them wore matching blue athletic gear. They looked exactly like a happy little family.
I took a deep breath and walked over quickly. "Leo, Mommy's here." My son turned around, his smile instantly vanishing when he saw me. "Why are you so late?
Everyone else's mom got here forever ago!" Marcus frowned, his voice dripping with annoyance. "Elena, I know you're busy with work, but how could you skip your own son's field day?
Thank god Chloe came, or Leo would have been devastated." Chloe chimed in right on cue, looking apologetic. "Don't be mad, Elena.
I shouldn't have stepped in, but I just couldn't bear to see Leo sad..." She stroked Leo's hair. "I didn't want the other kids to tease him for not having a mom there." Her soft, weak voice cut through me like a knife.
Suppressing my anger, I knelt down. "Mommy will do the next race with you, okay?" "No!" Leo took a sharp step back, hiding behind Chloe. "You run so slow! You'll make us lose!
I want Chloe!" He looked up at Marcus and declared proudly, "Dad and Chloe are all I need!" A few nearby parents shot us strange looks, whispering among themselves. "Why is that kid talking to his mother like that?" Chloe knelt down to embrace Leo, cooing over him. "Shh, it's okay, buddy.
I'll run with you." She looked up at me, a flash of triumph in her eyes, though her tone remained apologetic. "Elena, he's just a kid.
Don't take it personally." "It's fine." I stood up, digging my nails deep into my palms. "Have fun." I turned and walked away.
Behind me, I heard Leo joyfully calling Chloe "Mommy," Marcus gently praising her for being so good to Leo, and the surrounding parents whispering, "Wait, who is actually the mother?" Five years of marriage, five years of motherhood, scattered away in the chilly autumn breeze.
Opening · Chapter 4
That evening, when I came out of the shower, Marcus was actually sitting on the bedroom sofa waiting for me. He wasn't scrolling through his phone or reading documents.
He held a glass of warm milk, his voice incredibly soft. "Still mad? Kids say stupid things. Don't take it to heart." I took the glass, laughing bitterly in my head.
We had been married for five years, yet he couldn't remember that I was lactose intolerant.
But he remembered Chloe's pollen allergy perfectly—the very day she moved in, he threw away all my houseplants. "There's an auction tomorrow," he said, pulling me closer. "I'll take you.
I want to buy you a gift." I nodded submissively, then dumped the milk into a potted plant the second his back was turned.
In the middle of the night, the soft click of a door woke me. I instinctively reached out next to me. Marcus's side of the bed was empty.
I slipped out of bed quietly, walking barefoot down the dimly lit hallway toward Chloe's room. The door was slightly ajar.
From inside, I heard heavy breathing and hushed, intimate whispers. "Is she asleep?" Chloe's voice was dripping with honeyed sweetness. "Don't worry, I put a double dose of sleeping pills in her milk," Marcus murmured huskily. "I can finally touch you properly..." "Will that hurt her health?" Chloe asked hypocritically, followed by the rustling of clothes. "Who cares about her?" The mattress creaked under their weight. "You have no idea how hard it's been to hold back.
Let me hold you." Chloe giggled. "Marcus, who's better?
Me or Elena?" "She's like a stiff board compared to you," Marcus panted. "If it weren't for the Carter Enterprises project, I would have divorced her a long time ago." My heart was completely frozen.
I clutched the hem of my pajamas, my knuckles turning white.
Chloe whispered something with a laugh, but then her voice turned cold. "It kills me to hear Leo call her Mommy for five whole years... He's my baby." "Shh, baby.
Soon, Leo will be able to call you Mommy legally." "Three months max," Marcus coaxed. "As soon as we sign the Green Valley contract, I'll file for divorce." "And then, the three of us will finally..." His words were cut short by heavy gasps.
I stood in the dark corridor, trembling. I walked back to my room like a ghost. My phone vibrated in my pocket.
A new email notification flashed on the screen: [DNA Test Results: There is 0% biological relationship between Chloe Miller and Leo Vance.
There is 0% biological relationship between Marcus Vance and Leo Vance.] I stared at the report. Then, I burst out laughing.
Rain started to pour outside, tapping against the windowpane like a ticking clock.
I opened my Snapchat chat with my father and sent a message: "Dad, go ahead and start pulling out our investments." Then, I lay back down in bed, closing my eyes amidst the lingering scent of Marcus's cologne.
Tomorrow, at the auction, I'd make him buy me that sapphire necklace with his own hands—using the very last of Vance Group's liquid assets.
